Art is beyond what one may render on paper, but it is how one expresses

their ideas to society. It is a way that one can deliver their soul to the rest of

people through skill and abillity, its like a potion for stress, or a cure for those

who are depressed. Art is taking hard strides through devotion or like breath-

ing in oxygen from beneath the ocean. Art is that second half of reality in

which humanity can actually own and caress, it is forever life.

How much money do wespend on shoes each year? The

    average American spends over

$500.00 on shoes each year. What

do we do with our shoes? Well, we

sometimes wear them a few times

out of the year, then they throw them

in the back of their closets or in the

garbage. There are always those 2-3

pairs that we may alternate between

    throughout the week, but honestly

will a person wear all 32 pairs:more pairs than days in a month.

Really, people do not notice another

persons shoes unless they bring at-

tention to them. So why do people

spend a lot of money on shoes that

they may not even get around to

wearing. Well it is "their" money,

but it does go down the drain, right?

Shoes down the drain = money

    down the drain. Money down

the drain = one more poor child

    or adult without support. During

the summer of 2009, in Down-

    town Chicago, some friends and

I went to the beach and a few

    stores on Michigan Ave. While

    walking, we came in contact

with a poor man who was ask-

ing for money and food. Since

he was walking with a cane,

    immediately, I noticed that he

did not have on any shoes. He

had cut out pieces of cardboard

    with rubber bands around them

on the bottom of his feet. I felt

terrible for the fact that I had on

ipops and not one of the 9

pairs of shoes that I had at home

in my closet because I would

    have walked barefoot for one

day just to have the satisfaction

that this older guy who looked

like he was in his 50's had a pair

of shoes. Having 9-32 pairs of

shoes does not mean anything of

value if you can not wear them

all at the same time, and those

dusty shoes that are in the back

of our closets that we do not even

    wear anymore can denitely ben-

et someone like that older guy

who did not even own one pair.

Shoes in a sink is just another

way of saying, money down the

    drain. We constantly throw away

money by not donating the things

we do not use anymore. At least

    donating these things, such as

shoes, to a shelter would ben-

et the poor, and our money will

be going towards a good cause.

When creating this illustration there are many complexities. Since there are so many layers,I have to be careful in creating each layer and grouping them so that I can access them easily. In

the photograph of the shoes in the sink, there is so much shadow, lines, shapes, shades of gray, and

layers to deal with. When beginning this picture, I started out with the sink. At the faucet, I used

shades of white and gray to create a shadows and lighting. I wanted to express the shininess of

the image by adding in white shapes to create glare. For the water, I used many layers of gray in

several different shades and transparencies. For the sink I used a white layer and then several gray

layers to add shadow to it by adding transparency to them as well. To make certain shades and

images fade, I feathered the images to blend into its background. As we move alone to the shoes, Icreated each shoe similar in style but different in color and shape of course, because they were all

placed differently in the sink. To create the shoes, I locked the rest of the layers in the picture and

then I grouped all of the lines and shapes together which created the shoes. I elevated those images

above the sink layer and the background layer. This created dept in the picture. For the some of the

other shadows and styles, I used the gradient tool to change transition and object from light to dark,

giving it a 3D appearance. As I continue the process, the image begins to look sleek and polished.

    STYLEBy:Malcolm M. Lee

The name of my art isEchossion. Echossion is

a style of art, which consists

    of repeated brushstrokes,

    and choppy lines that cre-

    ates a sketchy impression

    of an object. One element

that is common throughoutthe Echossion style is re-

    ection. Reection plays

    an important role because it

    captures the shape and out-

    line of the image, creating

    an abstraction of emotion

    and personality. The idea

    of reection intensies

    the outlines of the image.

    Another element that is

greatly used is shadow.Shadow allows for the im-

age to create a repetition of

    its own shape while adding

    weight and allowing the

image to appear as a solid

    in a space. The reection

    of shadows may take on

    different shapes or appear-

    ances from the object itself.

    Through transparency and

opacity, both play an im-portant role in the reaction

    creation of the image. The

    transition between trans-

    parency and opacity gives

the image dept of eld and

    volume. One can distin-

    guish between the high

    and lows within the im-

    age. Also, a common fea-

ture is the use of gradient.

    This aids the reection

    of the objects by giving

    the background space

    a shiny 3D-ish effect.

The image that I ndmost appealing is the

    downward slanted rose,

    which I title it Difssion

    Rose. While viewing an

    articial rose, in this im-

    age, I used several forms

of the brush tool in Adobe

    Illustrator; charcoal, ink,

    and watercolor. For draw-

    ing uency, I also used

a mouse pen and mouse pad to create the image.

    First, I chose the charcoal

    brush to establish the im-

    pression of the object that

    I was recreating. I out-

    lined the details that stood

out the most to me like a

    few rose pedals, a stem

and leaves. I used the ink

    brush to create another

layer of the rose in greenand also red. I lled in the

pedals of the rose with a

    watercolor brush using

    two shades of gray (both

    dark and light). By layer-

    ing these traces, it gave

the image a sketchy look. I

    then copied the image and

    pasted it while altering the

    transparency and shifting

    the image layer backward.

    For the background, I

    chose to create a gradi-

    ent giving the object a

shiny foundation and cre-ating a space for it. I used

a ruby red, dark red and

    white to create the gradi-

    ent. The white streak gives

    the gradient its shiny glare.

    When I look at Difs-

sion Rose, I know that it

    represents the Echossion

    style because it follows all

of the rules with this form

of art. It has shadow, reec-tion, choppy brush strokes,

    the impression of the im-

    age, repeated and layered

    lines, opacity, and transpar-

ency. It also has a sense of

    color contrast with colors

    ranging from light to dark.

    The direction of the im-

    age being a slanted rose

    animates the picture in a

way. There is a sense ofmovement and busyness.

Anyone can be success-ful in life regardless of the

    problems and issues in which

    they may encounter. Suc-

cess is when a goal is fullled.

    The likeliness of ones success

does not depend on the prob-

lems or the other people in

which they may encounter, but itdepends on the way in which

    a person deals with these

    problems or people: This, I

    believe. Success comes to

me through a set of goals and

guidelines. In order for me to

meet the goals in which I set

for myself, I know that I must

    establish guidelines and

follow it thoroughly. I do this

    through self-control, self-mo-

    tivation and independence.

    With those three values anyone

    can be successful.In the sum-

mer of 2008, I set aside goals

    for guidelines based on how

    much I wanted those things.

Starting with my rst priority of

course, I went and found a

job. It was at an arts and craft

store. Then, I moved on to

    bigger things; buying a car,

    getting a new phone, buying

    my clothes, and purchasing

    school material. It was through

    self-motivation in which I did

all of those things. Idepended o

    myself and made an effort.Som

may ask, Who would want t

work and get all of these thing

on theirown? I will answer A

    independent and successful per

son because we all know tha

    our family and friends doe

    not make us successful, w

can only gain success on ou

    own. Yes, sometimes prob

    lems would occur but self

    motivation allowed for me t

    continue on.I used self-contro

to manage the way in which

    would spend my money an

how often I would show u

to work. I knew the possibl

    Striving For the Best

  • 8/9/2019 The Art Extremist

    39/64

    consequences and the effort it

took to keep my job. With all

    of these values associated with

    one and another, I became

    independent. This experience

gave me the potential to aim

for higher goals, and to know

    that anyone can be success-

    ful through whatever goals they

choose. Currently, I am motivat-ed in other ways. I have set goals

    for becoming a cardiologist and

    medical illustrator in the future.

    Recently, Ive made guidelines. I

know that I have to obtain good

grades in all of my classes, and do

really well in my major of biology

pre-medicine, and my minor of art.

One of my goals for next sum-

mer is to take a medical assis-

    tance program at a community

college so that I can work in doc-

    tor ofces and hospitals. With

this I can gain medical experi-

ence for med school. A later goal

for me is to get into med school

    at Loyola University in Chi-

cago. I know that by obtaininggood grades, recommendations,

and experience, it is possible for

me to do. In life, everyone have

    inuences and obstacles that

they may come by, but when we

use the positive inuences to our

    benet, and discard the negative

ones, we become in charge of

our lives. When we get around

    those obstacles that come up,

    sometimes unexpectedly, we be-

come stronger for the next one.

I believe that no one have the

    power to alter someone elses

    success. A person can inuence

us, but it up to whether we ac-

cept that inuence or not: that

is what makes us independent. We have control over our future.

When we make a mistake, we

    have to blame ourselves because

it allow for us to avoid making

that mistake again. Our goals are

what we aim for and our guide-

lines are the values that go by to

get to our goals: they help us.

Any sudden movement of my heart.

And I know, I know Ill have to watch them pass away

    Just get through this day

Give up your way, you could be anything,

Give up my way, and lose myself, not today

Thats too much guilt to pay

    Sickened in the sun

You dare tell me you love me

Honey you know, you know Id never hurt you that way

Youre just so pretty in your pain

Give up my way, and I could be anything

    Ill make my own way

Without your senseless hate... hate... hate... hate.

    So run, run, run

And hate me, if it feels good.

I cant hear your screams anymore

    You lied to me

    Peace In Mind

    By: Jerrica Laws

  • 8/9/2019 The Art Extremist

    61/64

Peace In MindIm at the peace core in my mind.

    Im at peace.

I would rather be a best friend with this peace at heart than at home wondering where my king is.

Id rather by by myself where the sound of my whisper echoes where i am, than to be crying because you havent called meyet.

    Im at peace,

    Im at peace,

    Im at peace.

I would rather be by by myself than to become like moses and strike the rock, and not be able to go into the land of

Cannaan where you are going due to disobedience to the voice of God.

    Here i am questioning,

sowing and reaping tears just because you didnt come in last night.

Why become a sadened picasos painting because you dont treat me like the queen i am?

why become like a woman of Timnah and betray you by marrying a philistine.

I dont look to you as others do... which is another samson.

I bow to you and i crown you with the precious jewels of my body,

and yet you do me as you did those at your premarital party... you leave me with a riddle... as to why you say such hurtfulthings to me.

    Im at peace .

Im at peace in my mind.

Im not tosssing and turning due to the storm that comes near my boat because you dont treat me like the yellow ruby I am.

    Im not Jesus,

    Im not God,

    Im not perfect,

    but still,

you should treat and crown me with respect.

Why should I cry in my own misery when you dont wash my feet, and you dont take care of me? I wash yours.

Why am I here and yor name isnt written on my hand?

Why treat you like a King and you dont even know your name in my eyes.

You dont know the work or the worth of the labor my hands.

You should be able to see those things

but you dont see due to foolishness,

    ignorance,

    and pride for yourself.

A woman like me cant be with a man wrapped up in his own and not her.

Im not drawing tears from your well if the water already belongs to me and not him,

for his well is dry with void and the righteousness that lies in his eyes for what hes doing.

Waiting for you is a river of clocks and clocks and clocks that sont me back the hands of time.

But i sit by that river waiting for you but get no river in return....

Im at peace in my mind.

    In my mind,

I treat me like the queen i am,

and I crown me with respect I have planted years ago for me.

Im at peace, and misery has no say or part in it
