II. Burrell J. Holmsley, second son of John R. and Mary James Holmesley, was born in KentuckY •. Mar. 6. 1807. He married Lucinda Wagnon. a French lady, in Janullry, 1832 and settled near Cane Hill, Ark. Eight of their nine children were born there. Burrell became quite prosperous and was the owner of horses. mules, cattle. sheep, hogs and thirty slaves. In 1850 he sold this property and moved to Texas, driving the livestock. Some days they made only three miles. They settled in Gatesville. in 1851, and in early 1854, with F. M. Collier and John Mercer families, decided to move on to Comanche territory .. Burrell J. bought lumber in the barracks at Fort Gates and hauled it to Comanche where he built his home, barns and slave quarters on what was later named Holmsley's Creek. Soon other settlers came in, and the County was organized in 1856.. (!lee F. M. Coller diary below.) Lucinda Wagnon was born in 1812 and died in 1866 in Comanche. Burrell J. died in Comanche in 1891. Both are buried in Albin Cemetery.
1. Julia Ann Holmsley. daughter of Burrell J. and Lucinda Holmsley, was born in Cane Hill. Ark. in 1832. died in 1886. She married Frances Marion Collier in 1853 in Gatesville, Texas. F. ¥- Collier was born in Tennessee, Nov. 7, 1825 and migrated to Texas in 1853. He commanded Company D Frontier Service. He was the first clerk on Comanche Co .• Texas. He died in the late 1880's and if! buried in Meridian, Texas. ~ follOWing is an excerpt from his diary:
. From the Diary of Frances Marion Collier
The year 1854 was a remarkably good crop year all over Texas. It rained continually all Spring and Summer. and all are aware that there is no poor land in Northwest Texas· if it is kept wet. All grains planted and tended came uP. matured and produced an abundant yield, and such a coat of mesquite grass was never seen as was seen by the old settlers of 1854 of Comanche. Brown and other counties. Every mast bearing tree was loaded with acorns. The branches and springs were running flush all the year. This unusual wet spring and summer was followed by an open warm fall and winter. No freezing weather until after Christmas. and not much then, all of which was very fortunate to these early settlers who were there with their families a~d stock, and trying to form new settlepments. 150 miles from nowhere.
We find them on the 20th day of December. 1854. that is Frank M. Collier and his wife Julia A. Collier, Uncle Jesse Mercer and his wife Alice Mercer, were the only whites there were in this settlement. Mercer had 15 or 20 negroes and Collier and wife one. a negro girl named Patsy. Mrs. Mercer was Uncle Jesse's 2nd wife and was about his junior 30 years and she was very fond oft something to wear and going somewhere to wear it and was bitterly opposed to going on the frontier. During our slow and tedious trip from George Town to our Camp on Mercer Creek. a few days over four months. Mr. and Mrs. Mercer had quarrelled for Breakfast. Dinner and Supper, and if there was anything between meals it was quarreling.
After reaching our destination and stopping in camp for two days, it was so bad that Uncle Jesse's forbearance ceased to be a virtue, and from a prolonged wal' of words, a separation was agreed to and a general division of traps and calamities, suchas children, negroes, wagons, goods, horses, quickly followed. This temporary separation, for a short time balked over calculations and apparently left the writer with no other alternative but to return to the settlement, but Uncle Jesse and Alice both unbosomed themselves to myself and Julia, as there was no one else to talk to but negroes, and fortunately our efforts to bring about a recoll'\!liliation was availing and the matter ended with no final separation. And Alice quit for a short time her scolding, and Uncle Jesse-and myself finally selected a tract of -land on Mercer Creek, six miles from the present town of Comanche, naming the Creek after Uncle Jesse Mercer, and improved the farm now owned by Doctor Montgomery.
Upon this tract ofland in 1855, I built the first cabin ever erected in Comanche County, Texas. In which cabin on the 30 day of May, 1855, was born ThomasA. Collier, our oldest
- child, being the first white child born in Comanche County, Texas. In a few days, Burrell J. Holmsley., my father-in-law, moved in from Williamson County and settled on Ms tract of land two miles north of us on what was afterwards called Holmsleys Creek. In the latter part of l"ebruary, he yoked up and started a team of oxen to breaking prairie land which was the first furrow ploughed in the County. The plow was held by Thomas J. Holmsley, and the team was driven by James Taylor.
In the early part of February, 1855, Asa Reed from Octabula County, .Miss. arrived in the settlement and located two miles further down on Holmsley Creek. About the 12th of March old Doctor Tuggle arrived and settled on Mercer Creek near Uncle Jesse Mercer and improved himself a farm about the middle of April 1855. John A. McGuire, Henry Martin Sr. and Charles Isom, originally from Georgia but now from Bell County, Texas, settled on land. McGuire settled on the land now one mile below Comanche town on Indian Creek; Henry Martin, Sr. four miles further down on Indian Creek; Charley Isom two miles below on Indian Creek. These eight families, Mercer, Collier, Holmsley, Tuggle, Reed, McGuire, Martin, and Isom, were the first settlers in the territory now embraced by ilie County of Comanche, Texas. In the early part of May, M. O.and Lee Cooker came around us and put up their shanty and began to improve in good old Georgia style their homes on Indian Creek.
Pretty soon old Uncle Charley Campbell found himself among us from Louisiana, with him was a small family-- only himself and Peggie, as he called his wife, with 14 or 15 living children, mostly girls. And on the 13th day of September, 1855 in his home was born another child and her name was Kate. _ She was the first girl' child ~orn in Comanche County, Texas.
- She grew up to womanhood in Comanche County and was first the wife of Dr. Albridge, who aCCidentally shot and killed himself, and she is now the wife of John D. Anderson of Bosque County, Texas. The writer, Frank M. Collier, moved from Comanche County to Bosque Co.
In 1-867 the first death in Comanche County was one of Charley Isom'slittle girls and was caused by eating mistletoe berries that grew in abundance on the mesquite trees. The ..second Q.eathwas the result of a personal difficulty bl)tween one of Uncle Asa Reed's sons a.hQ. John Frobman from Anderson County, Texas. Frobmanwas buried under a live oak tree
:near where the killing was done.
