Your weekly paper with news, views & interviews. since 90/91. 21st season.

The winter season is ending. I meet trucks loaded with cars when I

return to Arjeplog from my trips. The sun is getting warmer. The snow and ice on the roads defrost and freeze again. This is the best time, but may be difficult for walking and driving as one day it can be dry without any snow, the next day snowy and the day after icy. There are some activities that still have to be finished before the testing season is over. Then it becomes quiet. We take a deep breath, smile at each other and begin preparing for the summer season.

Swedes take their summer holidays sometime between mid-June and

late August. If you had an early holiday last year you may have to take a late one this year. I like to wait for my holiday and take it later in the summer so I have something to look forward to. When the water in the lakes is warm and you can spend a long time swimming.

In my job, however, you are never really off duty, but the truth is that

in the summer, much less happens. It’s not so often that you have to step in and sort out a situation. You can cool down.

This year there are a few things that the Kommun will be doing.

First of all we are going to build a new district heating plant as the old one is about to fall apart. It is a big invest-ment for us, but absolutely necessary.

A nother thing we will do this year is expand the kindergarden,

where the youngest children are taken care of while their parents are at work. An unusual number of children were born in Arjeplog the last few years and the existing kindergarden is too small. In Sweden stay-at-home-parents are not usual. When a child is born, the parents get a kind of salary from the state for a little over a year, and most parents enjoy this benefit. A

few months of that time is specifically marked for the mother or the father, and in this way, both are able to spend time with their young children. After this time, most children go to the kindergarden.

A third thing we will be working on this year, is how to cooperate

with our neighbours. We are a small municipality with limited resources and we must use them wisely. We know that certain things are much cheaper if we do them together with others. We are going to try to determine the structure of the future cooperation with our neighbouring municipalities: Arvidsjaur, Sorsele and Malå.

Do not be surprised when you come back next season and

Arjeplog - and not just your work place - looks a bit different. We are developing. And this is exactly how it should be.

This & That• Michael Wörner has been the site manager of BOSCH in Vaitoudden since they opened in 2003. He has seen to it that everything works the way it should. Now he is taking out early retirement and his first plan is to fix his NSU Max MC 1958 model. Wörner har also worked at other BOSCH winter proving grounds in the world. He was with Billy Fjellström (see last week’s issue) in China and South America and said that in the beginning they were clearing the test tracks using regular brooms, just like the old times here.

Michael Wörner is leaving Arjeplog and Vaitoudden next week to enjoy an early retire-ment. Here he is proposing a toast with his wife Birgitte.

• There will be a programme about Arjeplog on German NDR TV “Ostseereport” with Udo Biss on April 1 at 18.00.

• Some dogs in the village of Mellanström have killed a valu-able Alpaca, that belongs to a family in the village. In the past these dogs have killed chicken and rabbits and the villagers are very upset that the owner of the dogs is unable to manage his animals.

• Two local men in their 30’s are accused of brutally killing a wolverine. According to the district attorney the men had chased the wolverine for several kilometers by snow-mobile before they caught up with it. They ran over the animal several times and hid the maimed body in a small lake. The court case has attracted large interest from the media.

• Wednesday 28 March at 18.30 vernissage at the Silver Museum for local artists showing various art techniques.

• It was Christian Weber who broke his arm in a truck acci-dent recently (Issue nr 10). According to SOS-alarm he told them that he was at Ice-Makers when in fact he was at Knorr-Bremse at Cartest, delaying their arrival. Weber who has been in Arjeplog many years knew very well where he was when the accident occurred. A source close to the rescue service in Arjeplog says that it is not the first time that SOS-alarm gets the address incorrectly and that no one is surprised. From a mail that Christian Weber sent to us:“At once after the accident I called 112 and said that I need help at the Knorr-Bremse land track. I thought the rescue team knows where this is. I neither said ICEMAKERS nor CARTEST. Later a colleague called 112 again and then everything went very well.

Thanks to everyone who helped at the rescue action! And thanks to all the doctors and nurses of the hospitals in Arje-plog and Luleå and to God who sent lots of guardian angles.

I think it is very important that the people of the rescue teams have exact plans where they can find the test tracks, even if there are several names in use for the tracks.”
