The arduous saga of Sri S.P. Sampathy from Obscurity

October 22nd, 1927 witnessed the birth of a stalwart, Sri S.P. Sampathy, Founder of the Siva Sivani Group of Educational Institutions. He was drawn towards imparting education by a twist of fate in 1961, when he started a school at Sanathnagar in a rented building. With a 25 paise coin in his pocket and grit writ large on his face, our illustrious Founder braved all odds to establish and leave behind an empire with assets worth several crores of rupees (though fragmented in the last days of his life) and more importantly several thousand pupils across the globe, contributing their mite towards the peace, progress and prosperity of the human society at large. In the words of Sri S.P.Sampathy himself “Being the Founder of this group and having a major role to play in its growth, my personality and mindset have become one with that of the institution.”

Sri S.P. Sampathy never believed in preaching without practicing. He had often said that to surmount the innumerable obstacles in his/her path, every person, from any walk of life must be determined, courageous and hard working to be successful. It is this very same conviction of his, which led him to start a school at Banjara Hills, a remote part of Hyderabad in 1979 and now the most sought after place.

In search of quality infrastructure for his beloved students, the schools were shifted from one rented building to other bigger and spacious ones over the years. Yet it did not satisfy the Chief of Siva Sivani. More than anything else, the fact that proper playgrounds, which play a pivotal role in the all round development of the child, were unavailable in any of the rented buildings. In order to provide this vital ingredient, the organisation acquired land on the outskirts of the twin cities in 1983 and later in 1989 at Kompally which now houses the Siva Sivani Institute of Management.

Siva Sivani Institute of Management was started in 1992 with approval from the All India Council for Technical Education, Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India. The Institute was initially housed in a building with traditional classrooms, which was not thought of as prudent by the progressive thinking Sri S.P.Sampathy, in the wake of the developments in leaps and bounds in the world of education and particularly in Management Education and Information Technology.

An idea of a paperless classroom was conceived in the late 1990’s as a result of long and unending discussions over a couple of months but providence struck an unexpected

blow by way of greed and disgruntlement coupled with evil designs by certain members of the group and the implementation of the dream project of Sri S.P. Sampathy was forced to take a backseat. However, the zeal, enthusiasm and determination of this doyen in education enabled the conversion of the dream into a reality when the most advanced, truly paperless classrooms, comparable to the best in the world were inaugurated on the 22nd of October, 2002. Constant improvements have been made over the years and are still being made to keep the technology if not ahead of, at least abreast with the ever changing times. Over a period of more than five decades, Sri S.P. Sampathy and his organisation have contributed their mite towards making the Country and the World a better place to live in. There is no district in Andhra Pradesh, no state in India and no Country in the World where the alumni of Siva Sivani has not made their presence felt. There is no profession or sector from teaching to law, engineering to medicine, life sciences to social sciences, defense to business, Government to Private where the indelible stamp of Siva Sivani has not left its mark. During his life time, Sri S.P.Sampathy held a number of Honorary posts including the President of the Andhra Pradesh Private Schools Association, Convener ISC and ICSE Examinations of Hyderabad, Advisory Member on boards of various Educational Institutions to mention a few.

He was the recipient of the ‘Best Vidyapeeth Award’ presented by Her Excellency, The Governor of Andhra Pradesh, the ‘Arch of Excellence Award’, the ‘Teacher of Teachers Award’ amongst innumerable other appreciations and accolades.

Sri S.P. Sampathy believed that teamwork is the backbone of the colossal success that he achieved and discipline is its most important ingredient. He would say that all other virtues in a being or an organisation for that matter, would inevitably and invariably follow discipline. The saga of this noble soul came to an abrupt end on the 11th of February, 2005. The legacy left behind by Sri S.P.Sampathy in striving for the cause of education is unparalleled and a daunting task for his successors in office. It is probably one in millions of people who strive all their lives for a noble cause, build an organisation worth millions of times the initial capital invested, brave all odds and leave the material world with not an inch of land to call their own. We at Siva Sivani rededicate ourselves to work towards the realisation of the dreams of our great Founder.

A high-tech experience

The Academic block houses classrooms specially designed and built to facilitate interchange of data and instruction material among class rooms to guide multi disciplinary approach to the teaching-learning methodology.

The Campus

The PGDM courses are offered under a trimester model. This allows students to undergo more courses, have increased opportunities to learn from various teaching methods and also to perform well with intensive study. The PGDM programmes operate through a combination of seminars, presentations, case studies, tutorials, lectures, term papers and project work. Some are designed to assist in topping up a professional qualification, while others are reflective in approach, allowing greater emphasis to industrial exposure through industrial visits. A two months intensive industry internship program at a corporate house is taken up by every student of PGDM Programs. In addition to Industry Internship, every student is required to undergo an academic project in his/ her respective specialization.

Apart from academics, students are trained in Soft Skills, Book Reviews, Club Activities, Article Reviews, Company Review etc., which are tailor-made to ensure the overall development of the students.

PGDM – BIFAAS (Banking, Insurance, Finance and Allied Services)

It is the first of its kind introduced in the country. This program covers sectors like Banking, Insurance and also focuses on Finance and Financial Services. It encompasses all the facets of finance and its applications.

PGDM - HR (Human Resources)

The objective of the program is to produce HR specialists. This course is a mix of both academics and practical inputs in Human Resources. This course is designed in such a way that a student who is pursuing HR course should be able to compete with any of the top HR professionals. The student can opt for one minor specialization and one sectional specialization with HR being their major.

Institution may modify / revise the specializations, courses, contents etc. as per the requirement from time to time.

Our Pedagogy Trimester ModelPGDM – Marketing

This is a unique course, designed exclusively for the students who are passionate about marketing and retailing. In this course a student learns around 39 papers, which automatically helps him in getting expertise to become a marketing professional.

The Marketing program focuses on the challenges any management faces in developing and implementing a successful marketing program. The importance of marketing arises from its role as the boundary function between the organisation and the marketplace.

The first three terms carry general management subjects and then intensity will be on specialization papers. The student can opt for one minor specialization and one sectional specialization with marketing being their major. The institute may specify eligibility criteria in respect of the electives. The focus of the subjects is contemporariness and changing market practices.

PGDM – Triple Specialization

At SSIM we offer PGDM with triple specialization. Every student has to choose two functional specializations, one as major and the other minor out of Finance, Marketing, HR, Systems, Operations Management & Logistics & Supply Chain Management.

Additionally every student has to choose one Sectorial Specialisation (A two paper course) from Retailing, Banking, Insurance, Event Management, Advanced HR Management, Capital Markets, Infrastructure Management, Taxation, Manufacturing Management, Business Analytics. Etc. The entire course has IT focus with necessary skills in IT Management.

The Evaluation

All the subjects are carefully designed and spread across 6 terms so as to avoid repetition and streamline the syllabi. As the system is a trimester model, examinations are conducted thrice a year. 50% of the total marks are allocated for continuous evaluation, which include class participation, term papers, assignments, case analysis, role plays, quizzes, etc. The other 50% of marks are allocated for the end-term examinations.

A comprehensive viva-voce examination is held at the end of every term where the panel members are practioners from the Industry. Students are also administered two comprehensive objective tests to test their knowledge on fundamental concepts.

Training and Consultancy at SSIM

Siva Sivani has a full-fledged Training and Consultancy division which undertakes assignments in training & consultancy on various vital and contemporary issues related to management for organisations in different sectors, both in India and abroad. It has a client base of 55 corporate business houses located in 13 states of the Country. It successfully completed consultancy assignments for both public and private sector companies. The Institute has the expertise in designing and delivering Customised Management Development Programs to various industries.

Research Activity

Siva Sivani has made research as one of its core activities and is gaining reputation for excellence in research contribution. Faculty at Siva Sivani are encouraged to strengthen their research base. The institute also subscribes to various research databases, software packages and provides computer facilities in addition to a treasure house of books and journals to support research.

This department undertakes sponsored research and consultancy activities sponsored by the corporate bodies in the areas of General Management, Strategy, Marketing, Finance and HR, Operations.

The culmination of Research initiatives during the academic year resulted in 25 publications in National and International Journals related to Business Management.

The department also published a bi-annual journal of management “Sugyaan”, which is in its 9th year circulation.

Placements

There is a specialised Placement Department headed by General Manager - Corporate Relations & Placement and Professional Trainers in addition to members of the faculty administrators and alumni who form the core placement committee. It undertakes the placement trainings, Softskill development, Liasoning with Recruiters, Organising Campus Placements, etc. SSIM has MoU with HDFC and ICICI Securities for a Joint Certification programme. Selected students of HDFC Certification Programme are placed in HDFC after the training. SSIM is an Accredited Campus Associate for Deloitte. SSIM has also tiedup with TMI Network for Placements and Industry Internships in addition to tie ups with the Wipro, and Monster India.com for final placements.

Admissions

Admission into SSIM is based on Management Aptitude Tests (CAT/XAT/MAT/ATMA/ICET), Group Discussion, Personal Interview, Academic Performance and Work Experience. Admission process will be held in important centers across the country.

Extra Curricular Activities

Siva Sivani strongly believes in motivating the students to become leaders by giving them ample opportunities to explore what they have within them. In order to provide such opportunities Siva Sivani has designed various Extra Curricular Activities to enable the students to understand the importance of coordination, teamwork, group dynamics, oneness etc. To give a structure to these, SSIM has named these activities uniquely starting the first letter of every activity with an ’S’ as in ‘Siva Sivani’. SPANDANA – A spontaneous Response (Freshers’ Party)

The institute strongly believes in inter personal relations and teamwork in order to give a feeling of oneness to the freshers. The seniors conduct ‘Spandana’ to fondly and formally welcome their Juniors into the family of Siva Sivani. Various competitions are held and a panel of judges select and award the titles - Mr. and Miss SPANDANA.

SAMMELAN - An Intra-collegiate Meet

An intra collegiate meet of students to bring out their innate talent is scheduled once in every trimester. Various cultural activities, management games etc. form a part of the event. The best all rounder is awarded a cash prize of Rs. 1,50,000/-.

SAMANVAY - The Essence of Co-ordination

An Inter collegiate Management Students’ Meet is organised by the students of Siva Sivani. The 2-day mega event brings together the students of various business schools across the country. They participate in various management related competitive events. This is an opportunity for the students of Siva Sivani to organise and exhibit their leadership qualities in managing such a big event. Many business houses sponsor the competitions organised in Samanvay. This clearly manifests the Industry-Institute-Interaction of Siva Sivani Institute of Management. The college which

His Ph.D is in the field of consumer behavior. Dr. M. Anil Ramesh has over 30 years of work experience both in India and in foreign countries. His stints in the industry include HCL, RES Limited, Oman Solar Systems LLC Oman. He has worked in reputed institutions like CBIT, Hyderabad, Bahirdar University, Ethiopia and UPES, Dehradun.
