Free configuration The standard shall support differentphilosophies and allow a free allocation offunctions e.g. it must work equally well forcentralized (RTU like) or decentralized (IEDbase) systems.
Interoperability The ability for IEDs from one or severalmanufacturer to exchange information and usethe information for the their own functions.
Long term stability The standard shall be future proof, i.e.it must be able to follow the progress incommunication technology as well asevolving system requirements.

GOOSE message
REF615
REF615
IED B (outgoing feeder) detects a fault, issues an opening command to its breakerand starts the breakerfailure protection
The breaker of the outgoing feeder fails to
open and after a set time delay the breaker-failure protection in IED B sends a BFP tripcommand to IED A as a GOOSE message
After receiving the GOOSE message IED Aissues an opening command to theincoming feeder breaker and the fault is
cleared
OK, I hear you!Ill openmy Breaker
My Breaker isnot opening!Activate Breakerfailure scheme
