BECOMING A BLESSED CHURCH Purpose, Presence, & Power

Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. – Matthew 5:10

Grace to you, and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We return in the bible to a part in which Jesus adamantly reminds his disciples about something he told them earlier in his ministry: that persecution would come with the decision to follow him. "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake" means that God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, and the the Kingdom of Heaven will be theirs. Righteousness is living positively, bearing the passion of love, mercy, peace, and justice for Jesus's sake. Righteousness is taught and practiced in order to earn the ultimate reward. Jesus bade his followers to be glad in hardship and to leap for joy when persecution came. We know that Peter was unwilling to bear such righteousness when he denied knowing his Master on the night of Jesus's arrest. There are some personal speculations that we unworthily invite by our intolerance. It is clear that Jesus expected his followers to be harassed, hounded, and discriminated against even while doing the right thing. Christians learn from the bible that God’s servants must remain true even at the risk of their lives. Paul wrote, in his letter to the Philippians , It is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be put to shame in any way, but that my speaking with all boldness, Christ will be exalted now as always in my body, whether by life or by death. buy scrip !!

Litter Pickup ContractThe Sebastopol United Methodist Church has picked up litter along Highway 12 for the past five years on a regular basis as an example of service to the community. The crew that has been faithful for these years are still interested in helping out once and a while, but they are not ready to take on another five year commitment.

CalTrans supervises this beautification program throughout the state. They are responsible for assigning worksites, providing all equipment and supplies necessary for a successful clean up. They require that there is a responsible signatory for the contract and they also provide online training for each participant. All the church needs to supply is the people who are willing to go out and pick up debris left along the road by motorists.

If you are interested in being that responsible person to sign the contract, contact people who are interested in helping and then reporting your results by phone to the local CalTrans office, please contact the church office.

where have all my scrip buyers gone?

With the activities of Summer winding down, it’s time to think about what shopping needs to be done for Fall... If you are planning any large purchases, such as at Lowe’s or Home Depot, we can order the SCRIP and our church will get the benefit! I’m also trying to clear out some gift cards that have been in my stash for a long time – does anyone have use for $25 cards for J.C.Penney or Land’s End? Call Pat Schoch with questions: 707-823-3889.

An event with Iris Dunkle & Clarice Stasz

"WHO IS CHARMIAN LONDON?"

Saturday, October 6 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm The Sitting Room, a Community Library

2025 Curtis Drive, Penngrove

This fall, the Jack London State Historic Park opens a new permanent exhibit at

the House of Happy Walls, exploring the life of Charmian Kittredge London (Mrs. Jack London).

Iris Jamahl Dunkle has a biography of Mrs. London in preparation; Clarice Stasz, PhD, has previously explored Charmian's writings in two books. Both authors were major contributors

to a recent issue of the journal Women's Studies which was devoted entirely to her life and works,

and both are advisors to the Park. Please join this discussion of Mrs. London's significance in

women's history and literature. Iris will also read original poems inspired by Charmian's life and

speak about the forthcoming biography.

Consignment FundraisingAre you looking for ways to help raise funds to enable our church to complete much-needed maintenance? Do you need to let go of some of your treasures to make room at home? Consider this: SebUMC is consigning “nicer” items left over from our Rummage Sale at two local shops – The Treasure House in Santa Rosa, and Second Wind Boutique in Cotati – some of our items have sold in less than a month!

The Treasure House is a non-profit store which supports programs helping abused women. Consignment items may be brought in on Mondays between 10:00 am and 2:30 pm, on a sign-in basis (please call them first). You can add your items to our church account (#716), or start your own account. When an item sells, 60% of the sales price goes to the consignor. The Treasure House does not accept clothes, collector’s plates, mass-produced items, anything damaged or dirty, items less than $10 in value, glassware less than 4 to a set, or any low-end jewelry. The consignment term is 90 days, after which unsold items can be picked up or donated.

The Second Wind Boutique is a private business located in Cotati. Six items at a time are accepted during business hours; please call before going. Our church account is #72 (or you can open your own account). Good-quality clean clothing, jewelry, decorative items, and dishes are accepted; consignor receives 50% of the price.

If you have any questions or prefer to bring your donations to church, please contact
