• New machines were being invented.
• First sewing machine was invented in 1846.
• This allowed dozens of shirts to be made in the time it took to make one by hand.

• John Deere invented a light weight steel plow, which a horse could pull faster than the old iron plow.

• Cyrus McCormick invented the mechanical reaper in 1847.
• It could mow five times as much wheat and other grains as hand tools could.
• Many farm hands lost jobs and went to work for factories in northern cities.

• Dots, dashes, and spaces were turned into words.
