The Angmering School Weekly News This is our weekly newsletter for parents, students and friends of the school. We want to give you news about what is happening in school, exciting things, future events and things we would like to see happen.
Issue Date: Week 30 Friday 8 May 2015
Broadcast legend and President Emeritus of the Lady Taverners, Judith Chalmers OBE, joined by
representatives of luxury cruise line Seabourn officially handed over a new 16-seat wheelchair
accessible minibus to staff and students of the Lavinia Norfolk Centre at the Angmering School.
Mr David Brixey, Headteacher said: "We are very grateful to the Lady Taverners and to Seabourn for
their support of this new minibus. We have an extensive sport and extracurricular programme for our
students with disabilities and the adapted transport is crucial to its success. For example, this week our
Boccia team have won the National Championships in Sheffield. We are also grateful for our local
support and to the students of our school who have helped with fundraising.”
LEGENDARY BROADCASTER PRESENTS
NEW MINBUS
Louis Saunders, Y8 student at the
Angmering School said: “I feel Angmering
wouldn’t have this many sportsmen/sports
women without these buses because you
can only get better with experience and if
you can’t travel to your event, you can’t
compete or assess yourself or your
opponents. It’s not all about the medals, it’s
also about giving young people the
opportunity to learn the key skills that sport
teaches, like confidence, manners and being
gracious in victory and defeat.”
The minibus has been made possible thanks to the fundraising efforts of Seabourn’s UK team, who
have enjoyed a long and close association with Judith Chalmers. The television presenter and travel
guru, perhaps best known for her role as presenter of ITV’s ‘Wish you Were Here…?’ travel
programme, has been an integral part of Seabourn’s fundraising efforts.
Fundraising is one of Seabourn’s core values, and the company has been raising funds for a number
of years to provide a Lady Taverners minibus for a school or community project.
Lynn Narraway, Seabourn’s Managing Director, UK & Ireland and herself a Lady Taverner, said: “As
a cruise line visiting hundreds of destinations every year, we know that travel experiences are vital to
everyone’s personal development and growth. We are so thrilled to have raised enough funds for a
minibus and we hope that this facility will offer some fantastic travel opportunities for the students at
the Angmering School.”
The Lady Taverners is part of the Lord’s Taverners, the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability
sports charity whose objective is to give disadvantaged and disabled young people a sporting chance.
The charity has put over 1,050 minibuses on the road since 1976, enabling over 20,000 young people
with disabilities to enjoy new places and experiences every year.
Paul Robin, chief executive of the Lord’s Taverners, said: “The Lord's Taverners believe that sport
and recreation are essential for all young people, regardless of ability or background. This minibus will
help the Lavinia students to get out and enjoy new places and experiences in West Sussex and
beyond. We are proud to support the staff, parents and young people of the Lavinia Norfolk Centre
and thank Seabourn for their continued support.”
When author Sally Nicholls came to visit Year 8, she held students spellbound with a reading from her creepy novel Close your pretty eyes about notorious Victorian mass murderer Amelia Dyer who haunts the book’s young heroine Olivia. Continuing the dark theme, Sally then led the students in a game called “Would Angmering survive the Black Death?” based on her gory historical novel All fall down.
After awarding Accelerated Reader badges to students, including a
Platinum award to Eleanor Escott who has read a magnificent total of three million words, students eagerly queued up to meet Sally and buy her books, including her prizewinning first novel, the poignant Ways to live forever and her latest title, An island of our own, which is about a young family working together to solve a mystery.
For around thirty students, a highlight of Sally’s visit was the opportunity to work on their
own compositions under Sally’s guidance, as she talked them through the process of
crafting a story from the very beginning. Launching our annual creative writing
competition, which is open to all students in Year 8, Sally announced this year’s theme
of ‘Secrets’. Contributions
are limited to 500 words, but
can be part of a longer
piece of work. The closing
date for submissions is
Monday 1st June, but
entrants are encouraged to
hand their stories to the
Librarians at any time
before that date. The winner
of the competition will see
their name engraved on the
William Nicholson shield,
which was first awarded in
2008.

Year 8 - are you entering the William Nicholson Shield Competition?
On Monday 20th April 2015, Matt
Francis 12BC attended the Brighton and Hove Albion players dinner, along with two team mates Seb Finch and Lewis Hammans. Unknown to Matt he won the Community Achievement Award. This award recognises the AITC participant that has demonstrated outstanding commitment and dedication over the past year whilst also becoming an inspirational role model for others. Matt has played Powerchair Football for 6 years for Brighton and for the last 18 months has been part of the England squad, training at St Georges Park, and narrowly missing out in the 8 man squad in July 2014 for the European Championships in Ireland (although he went to support). England came runners up to France.
Albion in the Community Achievement Award Winner 2015
I play powerchair football for Brighton. We have put a bid together for Aviva's community fund worth £25,000. To be awarded the funds we need people to vote for our project, this is what I am asking from you. Voting does not cost anything just a few minutes of your time and will have a significant impact on many disabled people all around Sussex. To vote please follow the link: https://community-fund.aviva.co.uk/voting/project/view/2637/
Thank you. Matt Francis
Currently Matt is training hard and raising money for a new bespoke chair to play in the World Cup in 2016, to be held in Houston (TBC).
Well done Matt!
Carla Chant 11SH spent
most of her Easter
holiday working with and
helping children in Sri
Lanka. This was Carla’s
second trip in four years
to these schools and she
has worked very hard to
raise over a £1000 both
times to get herself there.
Well done to Carla Chant for her Charity Work
Well done Carla! The school is very proud of you.
Well done to Arran Collis 12SJ who has been offered a placement by the Nuffield Foundation. Nuffield Research Placements provide opportunities for a limited number of UK students to work alongside professional scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians to get a taste of what life is really like as a researcher. This is a huge achievement as Arran is one of only two Angmering Sixth Form students to ever be awarded a place on this exciting project. Congratulations Arran! http://www.nuffieldfoundation.org/nuffield-research-placements

Well done to the Year 9 rounders team who have beaten Sion, Chatsmore and Durrington so far in the league, with some outstanding rounders scored by Charlotte Stacey and Issy Holmes, along with awe-some catches by Ellyse Jones, Casey Harris and Catherine Topham.
Gold Stars of the week is a reward system where teachers nominate students for working consistently at Gold standard which is above and beyond expectations. Students then have the opportunity to meet with the Headship team to discuss their achievements and work.
The students are rewarded with 25 credits and a well done letter to take home to share their success with parents/guardians. We feel this is an excellent reward system for the students to share their success with the Headship team.
Congratulations to
this week’s Gold Star
of the Week: Harriet O’Keefe (9SC).

epigram
noun
A pithy saying or remark expressing an idea in a clever and amusing way. "A Wildean epigram" A short poem, especially a satirical one, with a witty or ingenious ending.
Ancient Greeks and Romans used the word epigramma (from Greek epigraphein, meaning "to write on") to refer to a concise, witty, and often satirical verse. The Roman poet Martial (who published eleven books of these epigrammata, or epigrams, between the years 86 and 98 C.E.) was a master of the form: "You puff the poets of other days, / the living you deplore. / Spare me the accolade: your praise / Is not worth dying for." English speak-ers adopted the "verse" sense of the word when we first used epigram for a concise poem dealing pointedly and often satirically with a single thought or event in the 15th century. In the late 18th century, we began us-ing epigram for concise, witty sayings, even if they didn't rhyme. Etymology Late Middle English: from French épigramme, or Latin epigramma, from Greek, from epi‘upon, in addition’ + gramma Foreign translations French: épigramme
German: Epigramm Spanish: epigrama Italian: epigramma
Last weeks solution:
Can you solve this week’s problem ?
An examination paper is made by taking 5 large sheets of paper, folding the pile in half and stapling it. The pages are then numbered in order from 1 to 20. What is the sum of the three page numbers that are on the same sheet of paper as page number 5?
There is a geographical restriction: all entrants should live or work within the parish boundaries of Angmering. Entrants, or their immediate relatives, must not
be a member or employee of the parish council.

Did you know that Ofsted have a website, “Parent View” which gives parents the chance to tell them what you think about your child’s school. It will ask you for your opinion on 12 aspects of your child’s school, from the quality of teaching, to dealing with bullying and poor behaviour. Ofsted will use the information you provide when making decisions about which schools to inspect, and when. We would really appreciate you taking the time to look at this website and complete the survey. http://parentview.ofsted.gov.uk/
