A Message from the Editor

Summer is nearly upon us—Hooray! In honor of the forthcoming Dallas heatwave, we would like to commorate this issue of Th e Angelus to the upcoming INCARNATION heatwave!

You’ll see, in the middle portion of this issue, our special Summer Guide that will give all of the details for parish events throughout the summer—think of it as a giant save-the-date! We’ve included information on Children & Family, Middle School, High School/College and Mis-sions & Outreach ministries. Th ere is also an Adult Summertime Classes guide on page 21—take note of the special 10-week series happening in Memorial Chapel.

We’ve so many reasons to be thankful for what’s happening at Incarnation—not the least of which is our willingness to help others in need. We now have a unique opportunity. To help those victims aff ected by the recent DFW tornados, we have set up a special online, secure giving page with a goal of raising $1000, which will go to those in need.*

$300,000,000 in insurance claims have already been submitted—please make a donation and help our DFW neighbors recover from this tragedy— Donations are tax-deductible and 100% of donations received will go to the relief eff ort! Deadline to give: Midnight, June 10th!

Katrina. Joplin. Tuscaloosa. Th is time it was DFW.All donations will be combined with the proceeds fr om the Gregory Alan Isakov benefi t concert.

*Church of the Incarnation is an offi cial Red Cross “Ready When Th e Time Comes” secondary response team that assisted in Joplin, Tuscaloosa, Katrina, and abroad.

God’s blessing on us all as we continue to grow in our faith and love for one another,

Incarnation School of Th eology presentsGreat Anglican Th inkerswith Dr. Cheryl White | June 18-22

Th is course will examine the lives and impact of signifi cant historical fi gures who have contributed to the development of Anglican thought. Th e course begins with the early foundations of the English Reformation and places particular emphasis on those in-dividuals associated with identifi able intellectual movements of the sixteenth through nineteenth centuries. We will explore the writings and teachings of Anglicans as diverse as Th omas Cranmer, Hugh Latimer, Richard Hooker, John Wesley, and John Henry New-man, among others.

Dr. Cheryl White is an Assistant Professor of European and Christian Church History at LSU-Shreveport, and holds the endowed Hubert Humphreys Professorship. She also serves as Canon Th eologian for the Episco-pal Diocese of Western Louisiana.

Church of the Incarnation’s very successful sixth annual Day of Service on Cesar Chavez’ birthday exemplifi ed his motto “Si se puede,” meaning “yes it

can be done!” A huge thank you to everyone who worked so hard at Cesar Chavez Learning Center on March 31st, 2012.  Because of everyone’s eff orts, we were able to paint, decorate, and furnish 5 rooms; landscape the front of the school and two playgrounds; build 3 picnic tables and 6 benches; as-semble over 1000 teacher appreciation gift s and community outreach partner gift s; assemble a new school mascot mosaic for display in one of the school’s hallways; decorate and hang several bulletin boards for display in the school’s hallways; paint the school’s gym, hallways, and both interior and exte-rior doors; feed almost 300 volunteers lunch; install soccer goals and tetherballs for the students; and make other various handyman improvements throughout the school. Th anks especially to the Day’s project captains, whose countless hours of thought and eff ort really made the day run smoothly: Joe and Kimberly Chumlea, Tom Hooper, Pam Coghlan, Angela Watkins, Gary Brown, Mark Morgan-fi eld, Allen Dickason, Peter Overland, Jim and Jean Barrow, Joe and Kathy Daume, Dianne LaRoe, Megan Rain, Sam

Kincaid, Gay Oxford, Ellen Welch, Stephen Mackintosh, Lynn Bissett, Liz Lang-Miers, Jim Rain, Caitlin Rain, Andrea Winters, and Kam Bakewell.  It was a day of hard work and amazing fellowship for our Church. It is on days like these, with ministries like these, when the Lord’s work within our Parish is more evident than ever. Th anks be to God! Jeff JacobieDavid Aughinbaugh2012 Day of Service Champions

Nice weather for a February day; nice day for blessing the new home of an old friend.

Friends of all sorts and all ages cluster around Lorene Walker as the prayers commence. Th rough the fresh, clean house, the Rev. Judy Frizzell makes her way—living room, bedroom, kitchen, guest room, bathroom. She sprinkles holy water, noting each place’s func-tion and setting, praying that peace and love and contentment might abide there. Love, you could say, has a good head start at Lorene’s home.

When Lorene Walker, age 78, worked for Church of the Incarnation and its fast-growing family – in the kitchen, the nursery, the offi ces and worship spaces, the wherever-places that help fi ll a big, busy parish – she was the all-

purpose Mom. No mom ever had so many kids: other people’s, of course; not that the fi ne points of genetics mattered much on either side when a young ‘un wanted a soft drink, a pat on the head, or maybe – Lorene’s pat-ented specialty—a warm, welcoming smile. Vickie Hood, then the director of Christian education, remembers: “Lorene was like my mother. We were family. She was just always there—a real presence. Th e parish was her home away from home.” Martha Allday, whose two sons grew up at Incarnation, remembers: “A lot of people would have considered housekeeping—that was Lorene’s offi cial department—drudgery. Not Lorene. She had a cheerful word for everybody, especially those of us whose children were young and could get a little out of hand sometimes. She had unconditional love for those little ones, and so she oft en gave us mothers the energy we needed to get through one more day of chasing.” Lorene remembers: “Th e whole time I was there, they treated me like I was just one of them. Th eir children seemed like they were mine.” Came new times, new members, new children. Came, eventually, retire-ment. Lorene left the family nest, as did, over time, relatives who had worked alongside her at the church for

a combined 100 years of family service. Lorene’s own time with the Incarna-tion family had spanned 30 years and friendships too numerous to count. With retirement came certain un-looked-for drawbacks. Into one of those, one day, Don January stepped —literally—the retired Incarnation sexton, dropping by to check on Lorene, who was recovering from a stroke, put his foot through a hole in the porch. Th ere was worse: a roof full of plastic-covered holes; mold everywhere; no insulation; non-func-tioning appliances.

Don shared his concerns for Lorene with friend and Incarnation communi-cant Steve Rodgers, who, like every-body else in the old days, had known and loved Lorene—”she was genuine in

THE ANGELUS | MAY-JUNE 2012 7

Did you know that dyslexia aff ects 1 in 5 children?  Th is statistic may be even higher for children that don’t have exposure to books or reading opportuni-

ties at home.  Right now only 40% of the 350 children who attend our neighborhood school, J.W. Ray Elementary (on Lemmon and Caddo) are reading at grade level. Th is is a real crises right on our doorstep.

Reading comprehension is the basis for all learning from the 3rd grade on. Without adequate reading skills the future of these children is jeopardized. We have all heard about the problem of high school graduates barely able to read.

Th is is a problem we can help solve.

We are fortunate to participate in a partnership with Th e Shelton School and J.W. Ray Elementary to provide tutor-ing for these at-risk children. Shelton is the largest school/research center for learning diff erences in the world. We use the training method designed there and successfully imple-mented in institutions everywhere for the last 15 years. It can transform underachievers into successful and indepen-dent thinkers.

Although Incarnation will actively recruit from within, we welcome any volunteer, so please reach out to non-parishio-ners. Tutors are needed to serve daily at J.W. Ray from 8:45 a.m. – 12:00 noon for a three week summer session begin-ning June 11 and ending July 3rd. Volunteer training will

be taught at Shelton by Joyce Pickering, one of the original curriculum developers, on June 4th and 5th from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. If you are willing to serve in this ministry but are out of town for the training, we will fi nd a substitute training session for you.

Tutor candidates must be 17 years old and possess adequate verbal and auditory skills to teach scripted plans and to demonstrate proper enunciation of individual letter sounds.  Most of all, tutors must have a willing heart to make a dif-ference. Summer Extreme Reading Buddies will have the opportunity to continue with the student in the fall once a week for an hour to simply read together.

If you are interested in learning more about this op-portunity or would like to sign-up now, please contact Christy Herrscher at [email protected] or call 214-217-5632.

Children & FamilyChildren & FamilyGodly Play

Join us this Fall—we are looking for more volunteers to assist with Godly Play! In 2000, a powerful new approach to spiritual guidance for young children became a fabric of Church of the Incarnation. It’s name? Godly Play.

Developed at Christ Church Cathedral, Houston, by the Rev’d Jerome Berryman, Godly Play is a Montessori-related method of teaching children the Bible, the Sacraments, prayer and the Church year. Godly Play not only helps children to “speak the language” of our Biblical faith tradition, but also to know God and to experience God’s presence in their lives. Godly Play doesn’t just transfer information from teacher to student. It is a discovery method of learning the Bible and the Sacraments, which enables children to meet God through play and language. Using a unique storytelling style and beautifully-craft ed and thoughtful story materials, stories are told, not read. It engages the whole child - hands, heart, mind, senses and intuition - the best way for children to internalize what they learn. Th e purpose of Godly Play is to introduce and nurture the active relationship between God and a child that will be a source of strength and sustenance throughout his or her life. It captures the sense of wonder and openness that we all treasure in young children and focuses that wonder on the Mystery we call God as revealed through Holy Scripture, Christ’s body the Church and the activity of the Holy Spirit throughout God’s creation.

Over the last 12 years, Incarnation has made great eff ort to create and maintain an engaging environment for meaningful spiritual formation for our youngest. Godly Play at Incarnation is a true gift we give the children of our parish to learn and claim their faith and to know the kind of connection to the Living Lord of Creation we all yearn for. We hope you will want to learn more about Godly Play and be involved! Please contact Incarnation’s Administrator of Children and Family

Ministries, Sheri Crandall at [email protected]. One can also check out the Godly Play website:

www.godlyplay.org

how can you get involved?- Enroll your children.- Sign up to teach (teams of 4 people are needed for 6 classrooms each year)- Sign up as a “Friend of Godly Play” (supporting the administrative side of the program) To those devoting their heart and their time to Godly Play throughout the years - THANK YOU!

“I love teaching Godly Play because I don’t have to pretend I know all the answers. Th e Bible stories speak to the children, and they make their own discoveries without my interpretation. It’s fun to sit in a circle of children and see their enthusiasm for the stories, and to genuinely wonder about the meaning with the children. Godly Play is a wonderful gift to children-a gift of stories, time and a carefully prepared space where we can work in community to know God and to experience his love for us.” - Anne Spradley, Godly Play Trainer

Each spring Church of the Incarnation has their annual Day of Service. It has become a tradition providing the congregation

with the opportunity to grow closer to the Lord, while serving others and making new friends. Th ere is something to be said about giving of yourself while working side by side with another person—it is a joy that cannot be described by words. Day of Service is for us…our students, for you and for me—it changes and enlightens. We are the ones who need this experience. We are the ones who need our minds and hearts transformed. -Pam Coghlan, Middle School Minister

If you had been walking down the halls or been outside near the playground you would have heard laughter, and seen students working hard, talking up a storm, and smiling so hard it would have made your jaws ache.

Th ank You! Day of Service 2012“Th e end of all education should surely be service to others.” — César Chávez

Th ank You! Day of Service 2012

Middle School Ministry was assigned the tasks of painting bulletin boards and painting the walls with magnet paint so that the elementary school would have a variety of places to display their art work and papers.

her love for the church and the people in it,” he would recall. Steve refl ected. No friend—certainly no “mom”—deserved to live this way. It was payback time. How better to organize things than through the Dick Granger Neighborhood Ministry – the natural home for such an enterprise? Prior to his death in 2007, Dick Buck-ingham Granger Incarnation lay leader and all-but-fulltime Christian servant on account of his devotion to church mission and care of the needy, was re-vered throughout the diocese. Com-municants Stuart Bush, Bill Cheek, and Rodgers himself had organized the Granger ministry to continue and further his works. Reaching out to a family member in a tumbledown house was the kind of enterprise for which Dick seemed to live. Th e Granger ministry, 50 servants strong in the fall of 2010 , when the Lorene project commenced, readily found help and support for its objec-tives. Much money was obviously going to be needed. A fund-raising letter went out to many of Lorene’s Incarnation friends. “We had about a 50% return on the request, on account of people’s love for Lorene,” Rodgers recalls. No less valuable was the deal Steve worked out with the owners of

Lorene’s property to cut her high-inter-est mortgage in half, to $7,000, which sum the solicitations duly paid off .

Dallas Citizens Council president, and Incarnation communicant, Donna Halstead came at the challenge from a complementary, and vastly productive, angle. She helped work out Lorene’s inclusion in a federal housing program managed by the City of Dallas, provid-ing for renovation or reconstruction of a small number of qualifying homes. Th e city’s participation ensured the job would not just get done but would be done with a certain thoroughness and quality.

Following offi cial approval, in late 2011, the work went quickly. Th e day of the blessing – bright and dry for late February – found a team of Incar-nation teens using donated tools to dig fl ower beds, insert donated plants, till the long slope to the street, so as to give the property a fl air and style equal to that of the neat, freshly painted home at the top of the hill.

Amid newly acquired furniture (pur-chased through a second solicitation of Lorene’s friends) sat Lorene herself, unsteady from continuing eff ects of the stroke; hugging, laughing, joking; recalling old times and no-longer-young kids.

Said Steve Rodgers from the threshold, as the service of blessing began: “It’s our turn to repay the favors.”

In a wheelchair positioned to show her the entire scene sat Lorene, surrounded by friends and family. Smiling. “You were always smiling,” Incarnationite Laura Norman Corley remarked to her at one point.

“As long you smile,” replied the eternal mom known as Lorene, “you won’t never cry.”
