Shee, M.A., Secretary of the Institution, been well said that if you can only get men who are on the point of quarrelling to meet one another round a table, you can nearly always get them some way on the road to under- standing and, therefore, allowing for each other's point of view. And if conferences are valuable and remedial where the parties are opposed, how much more valuable aie they bound to be where those who participate are actuated by a common purpose, especially if that purpose be altruistic and directed to the service of mankind. In such a case each one who attends brings to the conference the result of his experience, a clear presentment of his difficulties, his aims and his hopes. They are sifted, compared and ex- amined in the light of the experience of others, and every one is enabled to dip his bucket in the common pool and carry away encouragement in his work, stimulation to further effort and the inspiration which springs from renewed contact with the central ideal which originally attracted each and all. The mere fact of coming together, and bringing the problems—and achieve- ments—into a common iamd, creates warmth and energy. Each separate battery of energy, working in isolation and under high pressure, will have become exhausted. Each battery is now brought into contact with the power house, the dynamo by which it is charged afresh and taken back to its local purposes with renewed power and range of action. Realising the truth of these experi- ences in every field of endeavour, which was confirmed by the great success of the first International Life-Boat Confer- ence, held in July, 1924, the Committee of Management decided to pursue the CONFERENCES ! We live in an age of Conferences. Never have there been so many. They range over the whole field of human activity, social, political, economic and scientific. At one moment we see the representative statesmen of the world assembled in conference at Eapallo or Geneva or Locarno to hammer out the golden bridge of peace between nations. Anon, and at periodical intervals, British statesmen and those of the Dominions, meet in the metropolis of the Empire to discuss the problems of imperial politics, home and foreign trade, defence, social legislation, emigration ; the whole im- mense sphere which modern develop- ments, especially the marvellous progress of transport and means of communica- tion, suggest and facilitate. Nor is the instrument of conference confined to international or imperial purposes. Let there be symptoms of unrest and difficulty in any great trade or industry, and sane minds on both sides at once turn to conference as the best hope of removing misunder- ' standing and solving difficulties. There is scarcely a science which has not utilized the same method, whether under that name or as an association or institute, in order to focus its problems, survey its position and encourage its votaries to enlarge still further the bounds of its particular province of human knowledge. In the light of the benefits resulting from the adoption of conferences one is appalled to think how many wars, how many strikes might have been avoided had people been able, had they been allowed time, to come together in the person of their chosen representatives to discuss their difficulties and to " arrive at an understanding." practice, initiated in the autumn of1923, of holding District Conferences ofHonarary Secretaries, in order to stimu-late discussion and co-operation amongthose who are doing such splendid workin raising the funds which are so neces-sary to the Institution's work. Thus aConference was held in the South-Eastern District on the 30th April (seeThe Lifeboat, September, 1926), andall the District Organizing Secretarieswere urged to hold similar Conferencesin their Districts at a suitable time.

In response to this instruction, DistrictConferences were organized by Mr.Edgar H. Johnson at Scarborough(9th-llth October), and Manchester(12th October}; and Captain the Hon.R. S. Mansfield organized a similarConference for Honorary Secretaries inGreater London on the 14th October.

The Scarborough Conference.

As I had the advantage of attendingthe Conferences at Scarborough andManchester, with Sir Godfrey Baring,Bt., the Chairman of the Committeeof Management, a few notes on myimpressions may be of interest.

With a view to saving HonorarySecretaries very long railway journeys,Mr. Johnson had divided his largearea into an eastern and a westernsection, the former including thecounties of Yorkshire, Northumberlandand Durham, and the latter the countiesof Cumberland, Westmoreland, Lan-cashire and Cheshire. All the Hon.Secretaries and Ladies' Guilds in thedistrict were notified of the forth-coming Conferences during the monthof August, and in September they weregiven complete details of the arrange-ments which had been made, thesearrangements including special week-end terms for the stay at Scarborough.

In response to Mr. Johnson's sugges-tion, the Mayor and Mayoress ofScarborough held a Reception in theTown Hall on Saturday, the 9thOctober, to meet the Chairman of theInstitution, and a very pleasant andinformal function took place, at whichthe delegates had the opportunity ofmeeting one another and discussingLife-boat affairs, and especially Station

j questions, with the Mayor and MayoressI of Scarborough and the honorary officials

of the Scarborough Branch.On Sunday afternoon, a sacred service

was held on the beach, in the Life-boat,1 which lay on her carriage. Those in

the Life-boat included the Chairmanof the Institution, the Rev P. R. Watts,

\ Vicar of St. Thomas's, assisted by' Mr. J. Brock (Missions to Seamen),

the Mayor and Mayoress of Scar-borough, the Chairman of the Branch(Captain Gibson), the Hon. Secretary

| (Mr. Morgan), several of the Local! Committee, and the Secretary of thej Institution.! Fortunately, the weather was fine,I though the effects of the tremendous

gale which had raged throughoutSaturday were still seen in the hugebreakers beyond the Harbour which

i thundered in on the Marine Parade,making the latter impassable, and

: smashing many of the iron lamp-postslike so many pencils.

The scene was very impressive. TheLife-boat, high on her carnage, a thingof beauty in her graceful lines, markedby the well-known blue and white, withthe bright vermillion of the wale. Athing of life and strength too, symboliz-ing the very spirit of the Service to whichshe is dedicated. This fine boat,surrounded by a great crowd, veryreverently acknowledging the signifi-cance of the scene and of the sacredservice in which they participated,formed the centre of a wide sweep ofbeach, curving out towards the nobleheadlands which framed the bay to thenorth and south, the former crowned

j by the great mass of ScarboroughCastle. One could not help feelingthat the whole great semi-circle, centredin the Boat, Crew and crowd, faced asif in defiance, based on the courage andtenacity of the Service, the thunderoussea that raged, but some hundred andfifty yards away, and sent its massedcavalry charging to the attack in suc-cessive squadrons of gleaming green,grey and silver, angry but impotent.

Immediately after the service, theLife-boat was launched, many of thehelpers going into the sea up to theirwaists, and a number of the delegates

were taken out in the Boat lor shorttrips, the Coxswain, however, keepingwell within the sheltered water. Hadthis not been clearly conveyed to allconcerned, it is probable that thepassengers would have been few indeed !Everyone was immensely impressedwith the ease with which the Boat waslaunched, and her speed and buoyancy.

In the evening the delegates wereinvited to attend a Concert given inthe Spa by the Honourable ArtilleryCompany Band, and Sir Godfrey Baringgave a stirring address on the Life-boat Service, which was received withgreat enthusiasm.

On Monday morning the Conferencewas held in the Council Chamber, bykind permission of the Mayor. SirGodfrey Baring presided, and repre-sentatives attended from Alnmouth andBoulmer, Beverley, Blackpool, Bradford,Brighouse, Bridlington, Bishop Auck-land, Cullercoats, Darlington, Dewsbury,Drifneld, Filey, Heckmondwike, Horn-sea, Hull, Mexborough, Ryton-on-Tyne,Rotherham, Runswick, Selby, Scar-borough, Seaham, Seaton Delaval,Tynemouth and Wnitby.

Following the Chairman's address andone by the Secretary of the Institution,the Conference discussed a very fulland comprehensive Agenda, whichcovered almost every point of interestand importance to workers for theInstitution, great stress being laid uponthe value of securing a good subscrip-tion list as the bed-rock basis of ourfinancial support, and as the surestmeans of securing permanent intereston the part of contributors to theInstitution's funds. It was very en-couraging to find how fully the valueof the Ladies' Life-boat Guild had beenrealised in the North of England, andhow rapidly the formation of theGuilds had progressed and was pro-gressing. Many valuable suggestionscame from members of the Guild.

It is worthy of note that everydelegate present had bofore him or hera list of all the novelties, mascots,badges, statuettes, paper weights, etc.,etc., available for sale by Stationand Financial Branches, and specimensof all these objects were admirably

displayed on a central table, whilethe Hall itself was well decorated withthe Institution's flags, emblems andbannerettes. The delegates also hadbefore them a complete set of theleaflets, forms of appeal, films, notesfor speakers, whist drive cards, etc., etc.This greatly facilitated the discussionof detail, and was, in some cases, actuallythe best means of bringing what maybe called the machinery of raising fundsto the notice of those who are sogenerously engaged in carrying it out.

Arrangements were made to refund,on the spot, the actual railway expensesof those who wished for such refund,and it is very gratifying to state thatthe whole amount thus incurred wasonly £10 16s. 3d.

The Manchester Conference.

On the 12th October, the LordMayor of Manchester received thedelegates before the Conference, whichwas held in the afternoon in the Mayor'sParlour, the Chair being taken, afterthe formal reception, by the Chairmanof the Institution, supported by theMayor of Salford, Sir William Milligan(Chairman of the Manchester andSalford Branch), and the Secretary ofthe Institution. The following Brancheswere represented :—Accrington, Ashtoii-in-Makerfield, Burnley, Bolton, Cul-cheth, Horwich, Heywood, Holling-worth, Hyde, Irlam, Kendal, Liverpool,Leigh, Little Hulton, Lymm, Manchester,Middlewich, Mottram, Maryport, New-ton-in-Makerfield, Nantwich, North-wich, Oldham, Preston, Padiham, Rams-bottom, St. Anue's-on-Sea, Stalybridge,Turton and Whitworth.

The Conference was on the samelines as that at Scarborough, the Hallbeing very tastefully decorated, andevery delegate being provided with thesame material as at the former place.Here also the Conference was veryfruitful in eliciting suggestions andstimulating emulation between differentBranches in the same area.

The arrangements for the refundof railway fares were the same as atScarborough, and the whole amountclaimed was £6 3s. 3d., a tribute to thefine spirit in which delegates throughout

the area approached the question ofattending these Conferences.

At the conclusion of the Conference,the delegates were entertained to teaby the Lady Mayoress.

In the evening a Civic Reception tookplace in the Town Hall, which wasprofusely decorated, an admirableprogramme of music being provided.The delegates were received by theMayor and Mayoress, supported by theChairman of the Institution and SirWilliam and Lady Milligan.

The London Conference.

On the 14th October a Conference ofthe Honorary Secretaries of the GreaterLondon Branches and the membersof the London Women's Committeewas held by kind permission of theMayor of Westminster in the City Hall,Westminster, under the Chairmanshipof Viscountess Bertie of Thame, Chair-man of the London Women's Com-mittee. The first notices of the pro-posed Conference were sent out in June,and the final arrangements were notifiedin September, when it was also an-nounced that there would be a visit tothe Institution's Storeyard at Poplarin the afternoon.

There were delegates from twenty-oneBranches, and altogether thirty, includ-ing the members of the London Women'sCommittee, were present. As themeeting was held at the same time asthe meeting of the General PurposesCommittee, the Chairman of the Institu-tion was only able to attend at thecommencement, when he gave a shortaddress welcoming the delegates andthanking them for their presence, whilehe emphasised the value which theCommittee of Management attachedto the Conference. He also laid greatstress on the importance of securinga large and growing list- of permanentsubscribers, pointing out that themajority of persons who bequeathedmoney to the Institution by Will wereold subscribers.

Many useful suggestions were madeby the delegates, one being thatHonorary Secretaries should collectsmall gifts and ask the members of theLadies' Life-boat Guild to sell them for

the Institution. In this we recogniseour old friend the Jumble Sale or the" White Elephant" Sale, and I wouldtake this opportunity of warmly com-mending this means of helping theInstitution to those Honorary Secretarieswho find it difficult to arrange for aLife-boat Day, a Bazaar, Fete or otherSpecial Effort. Nearly everyone hassome article " of bigotry or virtue,"as Mrs. Malaprop would say, whichthey would gladly forego if they feltthey were helping the Institution torealise its value. Any lady who wouldkindly take up the collection of suchobjects would, in a surprisingly shorttime, find herself in possession of aninteresting collection, a sort of herd of" white elephants," which were of noparticular use to their whilom owners, butmight very well attract a new collector.

The D.O.S. explained the aims andobjects of the London Women's Com-mittee, and told the delegates that thatCommittee were prepared to help theLondon Branches in every possible way.

My experience at Scarborough andManchester and the report of the LondonConference have confirmed me in theconviction that there is nothing bettercalculated to arouse the enthusiasticco-operation of our splendid HonorarySecretaries and members of the Ladies'Guild than these Conferences, whichbring together workers for the Life-boatcause from all parts of the country.Many of these are often isolated in theirgallant efforts to bring the claims of theLife-boat Service before their moreapathetic fellow citizens, and theykeenly welcome the opportunity tocompare notes, and the hints andsuggestions which are developed inthe course of a perfectly free discussionof ways and means such as theseConferences encourage.

It is certain that the Institution can-not neglect such a valuable means ofconsolidating its work and concentratingfrom time to time the energy, the enter-prise and the enthusiasm of its workers,so that this enthusiasm may, in turn,radiate in every direction and inspirean ever-widening interest in the greatnational Service entrusted to the Insti-tution.

Grimsby Trawler Owners and the Life-boat Service.By GEORGE F. SHEE, M.A., Secretary of the Institution;

FOR some time past it has been feltby the Institution that its Branch atGrimsby did not receive from thetrawler owners the support which it badreason to expect in view of the fact thatGrimsby is the chief centre of the BritishFishing Industry, in fact the largestfishing centre in the world, and thatthe Life-boats of the Institution aremore often called out to the help offishing boats than of any other type ofvessel. The extent of the services of theLife-boats to the trawlers and driftersof Grimsby can be judged from the fol-lowing figures. There have been 1,295launches of Life-boats or assemblies ofcrews for service during the past fiveyears (1st January, 1922, up to the endof September, 1926). Of these, 146were for trawlers and drifters, that isto say, over 11 per cent.

27-3 per cent, of all the launches andassemblies for Trawlers and Drifterswere due to Grimsby vessels.

30-5 per cent, of the launches andassemblies to British Trawlers andDrifters only were due to Grimsby

22-3 per cent, of all the lives rescuedfrom Trawlers and Drifters were fromGrimsby vessels.

31 -8 per cent, of the lives rescued fromBritish Trawlers and Drifters were fromGrimsby vessels.

3 per cent, of the total launches andassemblies of the whole Life-boat Ser-vice to all kinds of vessels were due toGrimsby vessels.

Unfortunately, the attempts of theInstitution to bring these facts hometo the trawler owners of Grimsbyhave been met by general chargesagainst the Institution of bad adminis-tration and extravagance. In view ofthis very unsatisfactory state of affairs,it was decided that a meeting should beheld at Grimsby. The suggestion camefrom Commander Boothby, D.S.O.,R.N.R., the Honorary Secretary of theGrimsby and Cleethorpes Branch, andthrough the good offices of the Mayor ofGrimsby, Councillor Ernest Harrison,

a meeting was called at the Town Hallon 8th October, for the express purposeof enabling critics of the Institution atGrimsby, and particularly the trawlerowners, to meet representatives of theCommittee of Management, so that thelatter could answer such criticism andobjections, and give the fullest informa-tion about the organisation, administra-tion and work of the Institution.

The Mayor asked a few representativeresidents to lunch to meet Sir GodfreyBaring, Bt., Chairman of the Committeeof Management, Captain the ViscountCurzon, C.B.E., V.D., R.N.V.R., M.P.,and Captain H. G. Evans, R.N.R.,members of the Committee, and Mr.George F. Shee, M.A., Secretary of theInstitution, those present including theDeputy Mayor, Alderman Frank Bar-rett, the M.P. for the Borough, Mr.Walter J. Womersley, the Port-Master,Captain J. Man, C M.G., R.N.R., Alder-man R. G. Hitching, and the Town Clerk.

It is greatly to be regretted thatnone of the trawler-owners attendedthe meeting. The Mayor decided,nevertheless, to hold it, and those pre-sent acted the part of advocatus diaboli,and put forward the main criticisms andobjections to the Institution's conductof affairs which were understood toexplain the complete failure of thetrawler owners of Grimsby to accord ittheir support. Press representativeswere present.

After the various criticisms andobjections had been stated, Sir GodfreyBaring described the nature and scopeof the Institution's work, and dealtwith the numbers and the duties of theofficials of the Institution whose salariesare given in the Annual Report andBalance Sheet.

The representatives of the Institution,the Mayor of Grimsby, and the Press, alsohad before them the summary alreadygiven, showing the very high percentageof services rendered to Grimsby trawlersamong all the trawlers and drifters towhose assistance Life-boats have beenlaunched in the past five years.

Lord Curzon laid particular stress onthe important and national characterof the \rork done by the Institution, andthe claims which such work had uponthe shipping community in general andtrawler owners in particular, though he iadmitted that those connected with theshipping industry had had a bad time ;in recent years. He made an earnest ,appeal to the trawler owners to drop jtheir attitude of hostility and criticism !and to support the Institution gene- jrously. I

Captain Evans dealt with the question jof salaries, and emphasised the character iof the work done by the chief officers •and the organising secretaries, who, he •thought, were by no means overpaid for ithe very difficult and arduous task Iimposed upon them. j

The Secretary dealt particularly withthe criticism that the Institution allowedthe crews to claim salvage, which was ;often exorbitant and unreasonable. Hepointed out the great difficulties of thisproblem, which was still occupying the :earnest attention of the Committee of jManagement, and emphasised the fact :that the Institution took no share what- |ever in salvage, except in connexion withthe services of the Padstow Steam Tug.

The proceedings closed with cordial jvotes of thanks to the members of the jCommittee of Management and to the jMayor respectively. The Mayor stated ithat he, the Member for the Borough, :

and other representative citizens wouldaddress a letter to the Press, expressingtheir complete satisfaction with thestatement made by the Chairman and ;the other members of the Committee ofManagement, and calling upon Grimsbyto do its part in providing the resources !so urgently needed to maintain the Life-boat Service at the highest standard of ,efficiency. •

The Mayor's opinion was repeated in '

a letter to the Grimsby newspapers,dated October 25th.

After setting out the facts with tegaidto the meeting which I have alreadygiven, the letter concluded with thefollowing emphatic expression of thesignatories' opinion:—

" We, the undersigned, desire to placeupon record that we are entirelysatisfied that the Royal National Life-boat Institution is run upon sound busi-ness lines and that the allegations madeagainst it are quite unfounded, and weappeal to the public of Grimsby to givethe Institution adequate support.

" As regards salaries, one of the state-ments made was that extravagantsalaries are paid. We are convincedthat none of the officials of the Institu-tion are overpaid.

" In conclusion, Mr. Editor, we are de-sired to say that if any one wishes tohave a Balance-sheet and Report, onewill be sent to him by return of post onapplication to either the Secretary, Mr.Shee, 22, Charing Cross Road, London,W.C. 2, or to the local Hon. Secretary,Commander H. B. Inaugural Ceremonies of Motor Life-boats.Southwold and Dunwich ; Yarmouth, Isle of Wight; Great Yarmouth and Gorlcston ;

Montrose.

DURING the past summer the InauguralCeremonies of five Motor Life-boats havetaken place. The first of these, theinauguration of the Prudential at Ram-gate, was described in the last issue soThe Lifeboat. Of the other four, twowere on the coast of Norfolk and Suffolk,at Southwold and Dunwich and at GreatYarmouth and Gorleston ; the third wasat the new Station, opened two yearsago,at Yarmouth, in the Isle of Wight. Thefourth was in Forfarshire, at Montrose.At Yarmouth the Prince of Wales namedthe new Life-boat, and at Montrose theDuchess of York.

The two Stations on the Norfolk andSuffolk coast have remained faithful tothe famous type of Life-boat—speciallydesigned for work among the shallowwaters and sandbanks on that coast—which bears the name Norfolk andSuffolk. Both the new Boats are 46 feet6 inches long by 12 feet 9 inches wide.The Southwold and Dunwich Boat has adraught of 3 feet 5f inches, and the GreatYarmouth and Gorleston Boat, of 3 feet2| inches. Each is driven by a 76 h.p.engine, and carries a crew of 13.

The new Life-boats at Yarmouth, Isleof Wight, and Montrose are both of thenew Watson Cabin type, of which twelvehave been built in the last threeyears, the first going to Tenby, in Pem-brokeshire, in 1923. The Montrose Boatis the first of this type to go to a ScottishStation, but at the same time anotherWatson Cabin Boat was completed forLonghope in the Orkneys, the two Boatsmaking the voyage to their Stationstogether at the beginning of September.An account of this voyage appears onanother page. These Boats are 45 feetlong by 12 feet 6 inches wide, with adraught of 4 feet. Each is driven by a76 h.p. engine, has room in her cabinfor between 20 and 30 people, and carriesa crew of 8.

Southwold and Dunwich

The Institution took over this Stationin 1852, and in 1866 established a second

Station there. This second Station wasclosed in 1920. Altogether sevendifferent Life-boats have served at thetwo Stations. They have been out onservice 92 times, and have rescued fromshipwreck 169 lives. The new MotorLife-boat has been built out of a legacyreceived from the late Miss M. A. T.Scott of Wanstead, Essex.

The Inaugural Ceremony took placeon 11th July. Sir T. Courtenay-Warner,C.B., Lord-Lieutenant of Suffolk, pre-sided, and among those present were Mr.Collingwood Hope, K.C., High Sheriff ofSouthwold, who delivered the openingaddress, the Bishop of St. Edmundsburyand Ipswich (the Et. Rev. Walter G.Whittingham, D.D.), who dedicated theBoat, Dr. P. J. S. Nicoll, J.P., one of theexecutors of the late Miss Scott, who

! presented the Boat to the Institution,I Commander G. D. Fanshawe, R.N.,I M.P., a member of the Committee of Man-

agement, who received her on behalf ofthe Institution, the Mayor of Southwold(Alderman F. Jenkins, J.P.), the Mayorand Mayoress of Chelmsford, Mr. ErnestR. Cooper, late Honorary Secretary ofthe Branch, Major Bernard D. Hayton,the present Honorary Secretary, MajorC. B. Satterthwaite, O.B.E., R.E.,Deputy-Secretary of the Institution,Captain E. S. Carver, R.D., R.N.R.,District Inspector of Life-boats, andthe Coxswains from the neighbouring

I Stations. The hymns were played by| the Southwold Town Band.! Mr. Collingwood Hope gave a short; history of the Southwold Station, and: mentioned the honours which it had• won, including decorations from the! President of the French Republic and| the Queen of Holland.

Dr. Nicoll, in presenting the Life-boatto the Institution, said that Miss Scotthad devoted the whole of her life tocharity, not only by gifts but by personalservice. She had always been particu-larly interested in the care of those whowent to sea, andhad been associated withthe late Miss Agnes Weston, founder of

the Agnes Weston Sailors' Rests invarious ports, in her great work for sailors.He felt sure that the dedication of thisLife-boat bearing her name would be thefulfilment of her life's desire.

Commander Fanshawe expressed theInstitution's gratitude to Miss Scott, andsaid that if only it were realized thatsea-traffic was the life blood of thenation, more would follow her generousexample in helping to maintain the Life-boat Service.

Commander Fanshawe than handedthe Life-boat to the Branch on behalf ofwhich she was received by Mr. ErnestCooper, who said how sorry he was thatillness prevented Mr. Eustace Grubbe,the Chairman of the Branch, from takingpart in the ceremony.

The Bishop conducted the DedicationService, andthankednot only Miss Scott,but all who by their care and thought,skill, courage and gifts, had helped theInstitution for over a hundred years tocarry on a work than which nothing moretruly fulfilled the spirit of Christianity.

After Captain Carver had givenparticulars of the Boat Mrs. Geerenamed her Mary Scott, and the Boat lefther moorings, and made a trip round theharbour. The ceremony concluded witha vote of thanks to all who had takenpart, proposed by the Mayor andseconded by Major Satterthwaite.

In replying, Sir T. Courtenay-Warnerspoke of the proud record of Suffolk inlife-saving. From the earliest days ofLife-boat work the county had taken anactive and responsible share in it. Longbefore the ROYAL NATIONAL LIFE-BOATINSTITUTION itself was founded theSuffolk Humane Society and the SuffolkShipwreck Association did what waspossible to rescue life from shipwreck onthe coast. There, in 1807, the firstsailing Life-boat was launched, all theearlier Life-boats, which had been builtin the north of England, being propelledby oars only. In the past there hadbeen eighteen Life-boat Stations on thecoast of Suffolk, but with larger Life-boats and motor-power this number wasnot required, and the coast was now fullyprotected with six Stations, three ofthem being provided with Motor Life-boats. No county had a finer record

than Suffolk, for her Life-boats hadrescued no fewer than 2,768 lives.

Yarmouth, Isle of Wight

This is the youngest Station in theBritish Isles, and when it was decidedto place a Motor Life-boat at the westend of the Island, Yarmouth waschosen in place of Totland Bay, wherethe Institution had maintained a stationsince 1885, owing to the difficulty oflaunching a Motor Life-boat at thelatter place.

The Life-boat has been providedby the amalgamation of four legaciesreceived from Mrs. Marion P. Smart ofTunbridge Wells, Mr. Richard Black-burn of Nottingham, Mrs. HenriettaD. Price of South Kensington, andMrs. Constance Armstrong ofBoscombe.The names of the four donors areinscribed in full on the inside of theBoat, and the name chosen for it,B.A.S.P., is made up of their initials.

The Inaugural Ceremony was fixedfor the afternoon of 22nd July, so asto form part of the tour of the Isle ofWight which the Prince of Wales madeon that day, and the town was speciallydecorated for the ceremony. Amongthose who took part in it were SirGodfrey Baring, Bt., Chairman of theCommittee of Management of theInstitution, the Hon. George Colville,Deputy-Chairman, Major-General theRight Hon. J. E. B. Seely, C.B.,C.M.G., D.S.O., a member of theCommittee of Management and Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, who accom-panied the Prince through the wholetour of the Island, Major H. Mansford,O.B.E., Chairman of the YarmouthBranch, the Archdeacon of the Island(the Venerable Dr. L. G. Tugwell),and Commander R. L. Hamer, R.N.,District Inspector of Life-boats. TheYarmouth Motor Life-boat was mooredto the pier-head, with the Motor Life-boat from Bembridge and the Pullingand Sailing Life-boat from Brooke,—the two other Life-boat Stationsin the Isle of Wight—standing by.The yachts in the harbour, the boatsof the Sailing Club, the premises of theSolent Yacht Club and other buildingswere all dressed with flags.

The Life-boat was formally presentedto the Station by Sir Godfrey Baring,who explained how the name to begiven her had been formed out of theinitials of the four testators, and spokeof the Institution's gratitude to them.

Major Mansford, in accepting theBoat on behalf of the Branch, said thatalthough she had not as yet been formallylaunched, she had already provedher worth and the worth of her crew,for she had been out on seven services,and had rescued 13 lives.

The Prince then said : " It is a greathappiness to me to have the honour ofnaming this Life-boat the B.A.S.P. andto wish her and her gallant crew everysuccess in saving life on the shores ofthis Island."

This was followed by the dedica-tion of the Life-boat, the ceremonybeing performed by the Archdeaconof the Island, accompanied by theVicar of Yarmouth (the Rev, StanleyWoodin), who dedicated her with thefollowing prayer: " Grant, 0 Lord,to all who man this Life-boat, courage,endurance and skill. Give them calmmind in danger, be with them in stressand storm, and let Thine arm be strongto save. Unto Thy mercy and protec-tion, 0 God, we commend all who sailthe seas. Shield them in the hour ofperil and bring them unto the havenwhere they would be. Until the seagives up its dead, grant 0 Lord, tothose whose grave is in the deep, restand sleep in Thee, Our Redeemer andour God." This was followed by theLord's Prayer and Benediction.

The Prince then broke a bottle ofchampagne over the bows of theLife-boat, and the Hon. George Colvillethanked him, not only for the honourwhich he had done the YarmouthStation by naming its Life-boat, butfor the personal interest which, asPresident, he took in all the Institution'swork.

The Prince then went aboard theLife-boat, and after inspecting her wasrowed ashore by four of the crew.

Great Yarmouth and Gorleston.

A Life-boat Station was establishedat Great Yarmouth in 1857, and in the

following year it was decided to keeptwo Life-boats there. The second Life-boat was withdrawn in 1883, and theStation itself was closed in 1919,when it was decided to place a MotorLife-boat at Gorleston. During sixty-two years the Yarmouth Life-boatsrescued 471 lives.

At Gorleston the Institution has main-tained a Life-boat since 1866. Therewere at one time four Life-boatshere, but since 1908 there have been two,and when the Motor Life-boat was sentto the Station in 1923, both the Pullingand Sailing Life-boats were withdrawn.The Life-boats of Gorleston have amagnificent record. They have rescued916 lives, and the Coxswains and Crewsof Gorleston have been decorated by theInstitution with sixteen Bronze Medals,six Silver Medals and one Gold Medal.

With the closing of the YarmouthStation, and the placing of a MotorLife-boat at Gorleston, it was felt thatthe whole of Yarmouth would take aninterest in the new Life-boat, which,though stationed at Gorleston, would bedoing the work which had before beenshared by the two Stations. It istherefore hoped, with the consent ofthe two local Committees, to amalgamatethe Branches.

A Motor Life-boat was first sent toGorleston in 1921, but later transferredto Lowestoft, and the Boat now 'stationed at Gorleston was built in 1923 ifor Cromer, and transferred to Gorleston :next year. She has been built out oflegacies from Miss Julia Adeliza Meiklam,of Gladswood, Berwickshire, and Mrs.Charlotte May, of South Africa, and tothese two legacies have been added a igenerous gift from Mrs. Mary E. jMoysey, of Guildford, Surrey. 1

was named by Lady Meyer, wife ofSir Frank Meyer, Bt., M.P. for GreatYarmouth. Among those present werethe Mayoress, the Deputy Mayor, theVicars of Yarmouth and Gorleston, andMr. A. D. Snell and Mr. A. C. Cooper,

In his opening speech Lord Somer-leyton spoke of the magnificent recordof the Life-boats on the thirty milesof coast from Caister to Southwold.They had rescued between 4,000 and5,000 lives out of the 60,500 lives jrescued round all the coasts of GreatBritain and Ireland since the Institutionwas foundred in 1824.

Captain B. S. Carver, E.D., E.N.E.,the Distict Inspector of Life-boats,gave particulars of the new Boat, andpointed out that with another MotorLife-boat eight miles to the south atLowestoft, another 30 miles to the northat Cromer, and five Pulling and SailingLife-boats in between, the coast was wellguarded.

The Rev. Aubrey Aitken, M.A., Vicarof Yarmouth, presented the Boat to theInstitution on behalf of the three donors,and recalled the fact that it was a Yar-mouth man, James Beeching, whosemodel was awarded the prize of100 guineas offered by the Institutionfor the best model of a Life-boat,seventy-five years ago, and that fromthis model he built the first Self-EightingLife-boat He also pointed out that the \upkeep of the new Boat would be about ;£650 a year, and appealed to the people ;of Yarmouth and Gorleston to show .their pride in her by contributing as :much as they could towards her main- Itenance. !

Lord Albemarle, in accepting the |Boat on behalf of the Institution, jexpressed its gratitude to the threeladies to whose generosity the Life- Iboat Service owed her, and spoke of jthe voluntary principle on which the !

Institution was founded, controlled, asit was, by a committee of business andprofessional men who gave their servicesfor love of the cause.

He then formally presented the Life-boat to the Mayor, who received her onbehalf of Yarmouth and Gorleston, andthanked both the donors and the Institu-tion. He recalled some of the disastersfrom shipwreck on their coast in the daysbefore there was an organized Life-boatService, when as many as twenty-twovessels were wrecked at one time off theirharbour's mouth, and 150 lives were lostin one gale.

Mr. A. H. Cartwright received theLife-boat from the Mayor, and saidthat it was the duty of the people ofthe district to do all they could to makethe Station self-supporting.

The Vicar of Gorleston, the Eev. E.Talbot, M.A., then dedicated the Life-boat, in the midst of a torrent of rain,and Lady Meyer named her John &Mary Meiklam of Gladswood.

The vote of thanks was proposed bythe Mayor and seconded by Mr. A. H.Cartwright, and at the conclusion of theceremony the Life-boat gave a demon-stration of life-saving work. On herreturn she rescued a bather who wasbeing carried out to sea.

In the evening, at a public ceremonyin the Wellington Gardens, Sir FrankMeyer, Bt., M.P., presented CoxswainWilliam Fleming, who already holds theInstitution's Gold Medal, with theBronze Medal awarded him for theservice to the ketch Henrietta, of Goole,wrecked in Yarmouth Eoads on 22ndDecember, 1925.

On the same day a Life-boat Day washeld in Great Yarmouth, organized andcarried out by the newly-formed Ladies'Life-boat Guild, which now numbersseventy members, of whom seventeenjoined on the day itself. The value of theGuild was shown by the fact that, in spiteof the bad weather, the appeal realized£225, while last year the sum was £96.

Montrose

Montrose has a long history in Life-boat work. A Life-boat was first sta-tioned there in 1807, built by Henry

first by a private committee, and in 1818was handed over to the Town Councilwhich administered the affairs of Mont-rose Harbour. Some twenty years laterthe management of the Life-boat Station

stationed a second Life-boat at Montrose.There have been two Montrose Life-boats ever since, and the record of theStation, since the Institution took itover, is 437 lives rescued from shipwreck

and nineteen boats and vessels savedfrom destruction.

The No. 1 Life-boat has now been re-placed by the new Motor Life-boat, andthe No. 2 Life-boat, which is a light Pull-ing Life-boat of the Self-righting type,will remain at the Station. A MotorCaterpillar Tractor has been provided tolaunch the No. 2 Life-boat, while theexisting No. 1 Boathouse has been en-larged, a trolley-way built over theexisting Slipway, and the Slipway pro-longed for the accommodation andlaunching of the Motor Life-boat.

The Boat has been built out of alegacy from the late Miss Ann Russell,of Manchester, and another Motor Life-boat is to be provided out of the samelegacy.

The Inaugural Ceremony took placeon 1st September in the presence of somenine or ten thousand people, and thenaming of the Life-boat was performedby H.R.H. the Duchess of York, whocomes of the House of Glamis in thecounty of Forfar, which has four Life-boats, the other two being at BroughtyFerry (Dundee), and Arbroath.

The Duchess was accompanied by theDuke and by her father, the Earl ofStrathmore. Captain John Stansfeld,President of the Branch, who is ninety-two years of age, presided, and the Life-boat was received on behalf of theBranch by Provost W. Douglas John-ston, O.B.E., Chairman of the BranchCommittee, who had personally madeall the arrangements for the ceremony,while the Honorary Secretary of theStation, Mr. J. C. Clark, organized aLife-boat Day which was held on thesame day. The Institution was repre-sented by the Hon. George Colville,Deputy-Chairman of the Committee ofManagement, Mr. George F. Shee, M.A.,Secretary, Captain Howard F. J. Rowley,C.B.E., R.N., Chief Inspector of Life-boats, and Commander E. D. Drury,

Among those who were present wereMrs. Douglas Johnston, the Provost'swife, the Dowager Countess of Airlie,President of the Forfarshire Branch ofthe Red Cross Society, the Lord Provostof Aberdeen, the Provosts of Forfar,Brechin and Arbroath, members of theForfar County Council, Admiral Drum-mond of Eskhill, the Chairmen andHonorary Secretaries of the Life-boatStations between St. Andrews andBuckie, and Voluntary Aid Detach-ments, under the command of MajorColin G. Neish, County Controller forForfarshire, Red Cross Nurses, GirlGuides and Brownies, Boy Scouts, ex-Service men, and 1,200 school children.

The streets of the town, the harbourand the shipping were all decorated, andthe day was observed as a public holiday.A special enclosure had been providedfor 700 guests, and by the help of loudspeakers the thousands gathered allround the dock were able to follow andjoin in the ceremony.

THE DEPUTY CHAIRMAN'S SPEECH.After the opening hymn, led by the

Montrose Town Band and the FerrydenChoir, Ijje reading of the lesson by CanonRankin, and the prayer by the Rev.Roderick Mclver, Mr. Colville, on behalfof the donor and of the Institution,presented the Motor Life-boat to Mon-trose. In doing so he said : "In thefirst place it is my privilege and pleasureto express to Their Royal Highnessesthe dutiful thanks of the Committee ofManagement of the Institution for thehonour they are doing us by beingpresent to-day. The Crown and RoyalFamily have always given their mostgenerous aid to the work of this Insti-tution, and it is with feelings of themost respectful gratitude that we wel-come the appearance of Her RoyalHighness the Duchess of York for thefirst time at a Life-boat meeting.—(Cheers.)

the John Russdl, is one of two to beprovided oat of a legacy left by the lateMiss Ann Bussell, of Manchester. Shehas cost about £8,500 to build, and willcost about £650 a year to maintain. Inaddition we have had to extend theexisting Life-boat House and Slipway,and add the necessary machinery forhauling up the Boat, and these altera-tions have cost about £6,000.

" The figures I have given will at oncehelp you to realize the very heavyannual expenditure to winch this Insti-tution is committed in providing andmaintaining a fleet of 217 boats, ofwhich 60 are Motor Life-boats, many ofthis design, and to which Motor Life-boats are being added roughly at therate of one every two months.—(Cheers.)

" You may think £8,500 is a large sumto pay for such a boat as the one beforeus. I wish you could see a modern Life-boat being built, the efficiency and theworkmanship, and the intricacy of theengines which it is necessary to provide.

" With the arrival of our newest andmost modern boat in Montrose yourhighly esteemed Provost, who is Chair-man of the Institution's Branch here, andthe President of the Branch, CaptainJohn Stansfeld, are straining everynerve to raise funds for the Institution.Will those of you who are here presentto-day help them in their effort not onlyby a donation—may I say a generousune ?—but better still by the promiseaf an annual subscription—again may[ say a generous one 1—and not onlythat but by interesting yourselves in theInstitution and getting other people tolo the same." Since the Institution has controlled

ife-saving in Montrose its Boats havelaved 437 lives—(cheers), the majority10 doubt being your townsmen andnay be your relatives. It is with theullest confidence in the powers of this5oat and of the men of Ferryden whoiave formed the crew that, as the repre-entative of the Committee of Manage-ment and on behalf of the donor and thenstitution, I now offer the Life-boat tohe Provost as the Chairman of the!ranch. God,speed her on her errandf mercy."—(Loud cheers.)Provost W.-Douglas Johnston said:

" On behalf of the Montrose Branch Igratefully accept custody of the MotorLife-boat John Rmsell, assuring you thatthe Local Committee will continue togive every attention to the care of theStation. But the work of the Com-mittee would be of no avail without thesupport we receive from the Life-boat-men.—(Cheers.) For generations thefishermen of Ferryden have given usencouraging service, and we have everyconfidence that the coming generationswill follow in the footsteps of theirforbears."—(Loud cheers.)

The Rev. John S. Robertson thenconducted the service of dedication, andCaptain Rowley gave the followingparticulars of the Life-boat:—

A DESCRIPTION OF THE BOAT.

" The Life-boat to be named to-day isof the Watson type, originally designedby the naval architects, Messrs. G. L.Watson & Co., of Glasgow, well knownto all, especially in Scotland. The typehas been gradually improved until the

gresent head of the firm, Mr. J. R.arnett, has brought it to perfection in

the Life-boat lying here."She is built mainly of Honduras

mahogany, has a length of 45 feet6 inches, a width of 12 feet 6 inches, anda draught of 3 feet 9J inches. She issubdivided into 84 water-tight compart-ments so that she is unsinkable, nomatter how badly holed her hull may be.Her total bulk is 57 tons. That is tosay that if she were forced right underthe water she would displace 57 tons.Her actual weight is 19 tons, so that shehas a buoyancy of 38 tons. This isusually called the reserve of buoyancy.What this means is that, reckoning15 men to a ton, it would take the weightof 570 men on board to force the Boatright under the water. She can carryas many people as weather conditionswould allow up to 150. With thatnumber on board, her deck, which nowhas a free-board of 9 inches, would besubmerged, but she would still haveample stability to work.

" She carries a Line-throwing Gun witha range of 80 yards, and a Searchlight.She is lighted with electricity, and has acapstan driven off the main engine.

This engine is the Institution's speciallydesigned six-cylinder engine, developing76 h.p. at 800 revolutions a minute. Itis amphibious. It can continue to workwhen submerged. In fact, the firstLife-boat of this type was tested byfilling the nine main compartments, in-cluding the engine-room, with water andthen, with the engine submerged, butrunning, and 19 men on one gunwale theLife-boat was still lively and stable.

" She has a radius of action—at herfull speed of 8'2 knots—of 60 miles.At the lower speed of 7 knots it wouldbe about 100 miles.

" I can safely say that Montrose is nowone of the most perfectly equippedstations on our coasts, and with her ableCrew may be depended on to continueher splendid record of Life-boat work."—(Loud cheers.)

The Duchess of York then released abottle of Australian wine, which brokeover the bow of the Life-boat. At thesame time she said, " I name this Boatthe John Rwsell." She then went onboard the Boat, which made a tour ofthe dock, amid loud cheers.

On her return the Duchess waspresented with a bouquet by the six-year-old grand-daughter of CoxswainWilliam Stephen, and the Duke pre-sented to Patrol Leader James P. Law,of the Porfarshire Boy Scouts, a SilverMedal awarded to him by the ChiefScout, Sir Robert Baden-Powell, forsaving another boy from drowning.

Captain Stansfeld, in moving the voteof thanks, said that it had been a greatprivilege to the Branch to have thehonour of Their Royal Highnesses'company, and congratulated all thosewho had made such perfect arrangementsfor the ceremony.—(Cheers.)

In seconding the vote Mr. George P.Shee, the Secretary of the Institution,said : "I am sure I shall be interpretingthe wishes of Her Royal Highness if Ifirst of all express to the President of theBranch our pleasure in seeing him here.—(Cheers.) Captain Stansfeld has beenPresident for between 40 and 45 years, andduring all that time has taken the deepestinterest in the welfare of the Branch.

" Her Royal Highness is a daughter ofthe County of Porfar, and to-day she

has come to link herself with the sea andwith that service which is the finestflower of our dominion of the sea. Bydoing so she will strengthen the affectionwhich all the people, not only of Porfar-shire and of Scotland, but of GreatBritain feel for her. — {Cheers.)

" In that part of Britain, south of theTweed, which Scotland annexed longago, there is a beautiful county whichhas earned the title of the ' DelectableDuchy.' There is another county ofEngland, whose history is linked withthe red Rose of Lancaster. But it hasremained for Forfarshire to give toEngland and to Britain the DelectableDuchess, the white Rose of York. — (Londcheers.) I offer you, Madam, the humbleand cordial thanks of all present here to-day, and of those hundreds of thousandswho throughout the British Isles honourand cherish the Life- boat Service, andI ask all present to e spress their thanksby giving three cheers for Her RoyaJHighness the Duchess of York." Thecheers were loud and prolonged, rushingin a growing volume of sound round thesides of the dock basin.

A FIREWORK DISPLAY.After the ceremony Provost Johnson

entertained the principal guests. Inthe evening he gave a supper to membersof the Montrose Committee, the Crewand their wives and the widows offormer Life-boatmen, at which Mr.Colville, Mr. Shee, Captain Rowley andCommander Drury all made shortspeeches. During the evening therewas a firework display which was alsogiven by the Provost. Portraits of theDuke and Duchess of Fork and a pictureof the new Life-boat were shown infireworks, and the Town Band playedduring the display.

The Life-boat Day, held on the sameday, raised by collecting boxes, the saleof postcards and programmes, over £90.Captain Stansfeld and Provost Johnsonalso made^an appeal by letter to allpeople of Montrose, at home and abroad,to contribute to the cost of the altera-tions at the Station. The appeal wasissued a week before the ceremony, andby the end of the month over £400 hadalready been^contributed.

A Voyage of Two Motor Life-boats.By Captain Howard F. J. Rowley, C.B.E., R.N., Chief Inspector of Life-boats.

AT the beginning of September the twoMotor Life-boats for Montrose andLonghope went to their Stations fromthe Building Yard at Cowes. Com-mander B. D. Drury, O.B.E., K.D.,R.N.R., the Northern District Inspector,•was in command, both Boats beingmanned by crews from their Stations,and Mr. William Small, DistrictAssistant Inspector of Machinery for theNorthern District, was in charge of theengines. I went with the Boats as faras Montrose.

A little over seventeen years ago,in April, 1909, as Northern DistrictInspector, I took three Life-boats fromLondon Docks to the north of Scotland.One was a Pulling and Sailing Life-boat for Thurso (Caithness), and theother two were Motor Life-boats forStromness and Stronsay, in the Orkneys.On that voyage also the engines werein charge of Mr. Small. He and I werethe only two on board the Montrose andLonghope Life-boats who had also beenon that earlier voyage.

A comparison between the twovoyages is interesting because, thoughthere were already a few Motor Life-boats on the coast in 1909, they wereconverted Pulling and Sailing Life-boats. The Stromness and StronsayLife-boats were the first to be speciallybuilt for motor-power. The StromnessBoat, which is still at that Station witha long record of fine service behind her,is a self-righting Life-boat, 42 feet long,with a 30-h.p. motor. The StronsayBoat, which went later to Peterhead,and is now at Broughty Ferry, is of theWatson type, 43 feet long, with a 40-h.p.engine. Like all our Motor Life-boats,until the last three years, they wereopen boats—splendid Life-boats, butwith few comforts for a journey ofseveral hundred miles. The Montroseand Longhope Life-boats, on the otherhand, are of the new Watson Cabintype, of which the first was built threeyears ago. They are decked and have acabin. They are 45 feet long, and theyhave 76-h.p. engines.

On that journey, seventeen years ago,the Stromness Boat led with the Stron-say Boat in tow, the Stronsay Boat inturn towing the Thurso Pulling andSailing Boat. The Stromness Boatcovered 768 miles, and the StronsayBoat 808. The journey took justseventeen days, and we put in on theway at Harwich, Gorleston, Grimsby,Scarborough, Hartlepool, Tynemouth—where, owing to trouble with one ofthe .engines, we spent three days—Blyth, Dundee, Aberdeen, Fraserburgh,Wick and Thurso. In the Moray Krth,and again in the Pentland Firth, wemet very heavy weather, with a N.W.wind and snow squalls, and after leavingThurso on the last stage the StronsayBoat had to return owing to enginetrouble, completing her journey of 808miles the next day. The actual timetaken for the 768 miles to Stromnesswas 122 hours, giving an average speedof 6-3 knots. Our longest run "was 111miles, from Blyth to Dundee, which tookeighteen and a half hours, an averageof just six knots ; and our average dailyrun for the thirteen days at sea, fromLondon to Stromness, was fifty-ninemiles.

That was a record of which, in thoseearly days, we had every reason to beproud. The advance which has beenmade in the intervening years is shownby comparing those figures with thetimes and distances in the journey ofthe Montrose and Longhope Life-boatslast September.

We left Cowes at 6.30 on the eveningof 1st September, and reached Montrose,a distance of 510 miles, at 8.30 on. themorning of 6th September. Thus thejourney took four and a half days, theonly ports of call being Ramsgate,Yarmouth, Scarborough and Sunder-land. The greater part of the journeywas done by night. We were actuallyat sea for three nights and two days,sixty-three hours in all, and the averagespeed was just over eight knots. Ourshortest run between port and portwas the fifty-five miles from Scar-

; borough to Sunderland, our longest, 135j miles from Yarmouth to Scarborough,

which took sixteen and a quarter hours,and was done at an average speed of

Scarborough, a distance of 208 miles,was done in twenty-five and a quarterhours, broken only by a call of two anda half hours at Yarmouth.

She was actually travelling four nightsand three days, eighty-five hours in all,and did 663 miles at an average speedof seven and a half knots.

Again, as in 1909, rough weather wasmet in the Moray Firth and PentlandFirth, where the Life-boat had to easedown, owing to the very heavy seas.Before that, however, the weather hadbeen very fine, and the Boats were ableto carry canvas for the latter part ofthe trip. This not only had a verysteadying effect, but contributed to thehigh average speed maintained.

There is one point in the comparisonwhich I should like especially to empha-size. The average speed in 1909 was6-3 knots, and in 1926 it was just overeight knots. With the much morepowerful engines now in use it may

« perhaps seem odd that the increase in\ speed was not greater. But a greater

speed is not wanted. If a Motor Life-boat were driven at a high speed inheavy weather no crew could live in

| her. What we have obtained by morepowerful engines is far more impor-

: tant than speed—a great reserve ofpower. Not only does it enable speed

j to be steadily maintained, even in very; adverse weather conditions, but it is of

immense value at what is the mostcritical stage of a Life-boat seivice,the manoeuvring in the neighbour-hood of the wreck, often in circum-stances of the greatest danger, amongrocks or wreckage, when the smallestmistake or failure might mean theloss of the Life-boat herself and herCrew.

Development of the Barnett Twin-Screw Motor Life-boat.Boats for Plymouth and Aberdeen.

IN October, 1924, the Institution laiddown two more Motor Life-boats of theBarnett Twin-Screw type for Plymouthand Aberdeen. The first reached herStation on July 1st, and the 2nd onOctober 30th. The first of this type,it will be remembered, was completedin the summer of 1923, and made a tourround the British Isles before going toher Station, at New Brighton, on theMersey. Another Life-boat of thisspecial type—intended only for Stationswhere long distances may have to betravelled, and where the Life-boatcan lie afloat — was laid down inNovember, 1925, for Stromness, in theOrkneys.

Like the New Brighton Boat, thePlymouth and Aberdeen Boats are 60feet by 15 feet, with a draught of 4 feet5J inches, and are driven by two 76 h.p.engines, which give them a speed of 9£knots, and a great reserve of power,enabling them to maintain their maxi-mum speed under severe conditionsof weather. Their tonnage has beenslightly increased—44 tons as comparedwith 40; and as a result of experiencewith the New Brighton Boat several

modifications have been made. Boththe engine-rooms and the two cabinshave been enlarged, the latter havingroom for between fifty and sixty people.The petrol capacity has been increasedby 100 gallons, with the result thatthese two Boats will have a radius ofaction, at a cruising speed of 8 knots, ofno less than 250 miles, a hundred milesmore than the radius of action of theNew Brighton Boat.

The most noticeable outward changeis that the exhausts of the engines,instead of being taken out at the side, asin the case of the New Brighton Boat,are carried up two funnels amidships,giving these Boats the appearance ofsteamships rather than motor-boats.This change has been made because ithas been found, with the exhausts at theside, that occasionally, when the enginesare stopped, water gets back into themthrough the exhausts. This could havebeen prevented by taking the exhaustsout at the stern, but this would havemeant a great deal of piping runningthrough the hold, and it was thereforedecided to carry them straight up fromthe engine-room through the deck.

Each of these new Boats is provided,like the New Brighton Boat, with aLine-throwing Gun, a Searchlight, aLife-saving Net stretched amidships, apowerful electric capstan, and a fire-extinguishing plant which is worked

from the deck and can eject a jet ofPyrene fluid to all vital parts of the Boat.The Stromness Boat, though of the sametype, will be smaller (51 feet by 13 feet6 inches), and will be driven by two60 h.p. engines.

Galway Medals.Presented by President Cosgrave.

THE awards made by the Institutionfor the gallant efforts to discover thesurvivors of the Welsh trawlerCardigan Castle, which struck the rocksand sank in Clifden Bay, Connemara,on the west coast of Ireland, on 14thFebruary last, were presented by Mr.William T. Cosgrave, President of theExecutive Council of the Irish FreeState, at the Town Hall, Galway, on12th July. The services were fullydescribed in the last issue of The Life-boat, the awards being—

To Lieut.-Commander P. E. VAUX,D.S.C., R.N., District-Inspector of Life-boats for Ireland, the Bronze Medal.

To Sergeant F. J. TOBIN, of theCivic Guard, the Institution's Thanksinscribed on Vellum.

To Superintendent S. McQuiLLAN, ofthe Coast Life-saving Service, a Pair ofBinoculars.

The Silver Medal awarded to Mr.T. L. CLOUSDALE, fireman on thetrawler Tenby Castle, which waswrecked at the same time, was pre-sented to him at Swansea on July 15th.

The chair at the ceremony at Galwaywas taken by Mr. E. K. Jackson, Presi-dent of the Chamber of Commerce,supported by Mr. J. 0. Kelly-Lynch,Honorary Treasurer of the GalwayBranch of the Institution, and Vice-Chairman of the Galway Chamber ofCommerce, Mr. H. McDonogh, Chair-man of the Galway Urban Council, Mr.J. S. Young, O.B.E., Vice-Chairman ofthe Galway Urban Council, and Mr.Michael McNeill, Chairman of theFinance Committee of the GalwayCounty Council. The Institution was tohave been represented by Mr. George :

F. Shee, M.A., its Secretary. Hecrossed from England the night before,but the boat was late in arriving atDublin,, and the train to Galway hadalready left. He went at once to theMinistry of Industry and Commerce, andthrough their good offices was even-tually enabled to proceed to the head-quarters of the Irish Free State AirForce, and was allowed to borrow oneof its machines, a Bristol fighter biplane,with a 250 h.p. engine, being taken toGalway in the record time of 100minutes. Unfortunately, owing to thedelay in getting the necessary permissionfrom the Ministry of Defence, he wasstill too late to take part in the cere-mony, but was able to meet PresidentCosgrave and convey to him personallythe thanks of the Committee of Manage-ment for coming to Galway expresslyto present the Institution's awards.The Irish Press hailed Mr. Shee's impro-vised journey by air on Life-boat Serviceas the first step towards the establish-ment of a regular civilian flying servicein Ireland.

Mr. Jackson, in his opening speech,said that there was no higher qualityin human nature than the readinessto risk one's own life for the sake ofothers, whose only claim and appealwere that they were fellow-creaturesin distress. He spoke, too, of theintention of the Institution to place aMotor Life-boat at Aran, off the coastof Galway, and said that it should bethe pride of the town and county ofGalway to raise a sufficient sum annuallyfor the upkeep of the new Station.

President Cosgrave read the accountof the wrecks of the Tenby Castle andCardigan Castle, as it appears in theSeptember issue of The Lifeboat. He

then said: " We are assembled hereto-day, at this public meeting of thecitizens of Galway, the capital ofConnacht, to record our appreciation ofgallant conduct, brave, meritoriousservices in most difficult circumstances,rendered in the hope of relieving suffer-ing humanity on the Western seaboard,where relentless warfare with sea andstorm is carried on. We pay tributealso to the gallant volunteers whomanned the slender curragh which tookSergeant Tobin and Lieut-CommanderVaux to High Island."

In handing Lieut.-Commander Vauxthe Bronze Medal, President Cosgravesaid : "In the name of the people ofGalway, and of the entire country, Ithank you for your great services."In presenting the Vellum of Thanks toSergeant Tobin, he said: " This is arecognition from the Life-boat Institu-tion for brave and meritorious dutyon a very difficult occasion; and inpresenting the Binoculars to Superin-tendent McQuillan, he said: " It affordsme great pleasure to tender you thispresentation of the Life-boat Institutionin recognition of your meritorious anddaring efforts to save life."

Mr. Kelly-Lynch proposed a vote ofthanks to President Cosgrave, who, hesaid, had come at great inconvenienceto give the hall-mark of his recognitionto the work being done in Galway topromote the interests of the Institu-tion—which was to promote the interestsof humanity itself—along their coast.By helping the Institution in its goodwork they were helping the generalwelfare of their country, for it was a

work which was entirely non-politicaland non-sectarian and which everybody,if he were a Christian, must supportto the best of his means. Mr. Kelly-Lynch then gave the particulars of theMotor Life-boat for Aran which he hadreceived from the Institution—thatshe would cost about £10,000 to build,and about £500 annually to maintain—and emphasized Mr. Jackson's appeal toGalway to contribute the £500 annually.Whether the money was contributedor not, the Institution would maintainthe Life-boat at Aran, but it shouldbe a matter of pride to Galway toundertake to pay for her maintenance.A good start had already been made, foron the last May fair they had held a Life-boat Day which realized £74. In thatsum sixteen shillings in every poundwere in silver, that high proportionof silver being, so the Institution hadtold him, a record.

Mr. T. S. Young seconded the vote ofthanks, and Lieut.-Commander Vaux, inthe name of the Institution, thankedPresident Cosgrave for making thepresentations.

The presentation of the Silver Medalto Mr. T. L. Clousdale was made by theMayor of Swansea (Councillor DavidGriffiths, J.P.), at the Guildhall, Swan-sea, on the occasion of the annualmeeting of the Branch. The DistrictOrganizing Secretary told the story ofhow he had saved the lives of the wholecrew by diving after the ship's boatwhich had been carried away, and theMayor paid a tribute to his courage andcongratulated him in the name ofSwansea.

Bronze Medal for Newbiggin, Northumberland.AT 4.30 in the afternoon of April 28tha steamer's whistle was heard at New-biggin, blowing from a position north ofChurch Point. There was a dense fog.A moderate breeze was blowing fromE.S.E., but the sea was very heavy.

The Life-boat was launched and wentout under oars towards the sound of thewhistle. She found a steam-trawler,George R. Purdy, of North Shields, onthe rocks, which extend out for half a

mile from the shore. A very heavy surfwas breaking over them. The Life-boatfirst tried to reach the trawler byanchoring to seaward of her and veeringdown, but twice she was struck byheavy seas which completely filled herand threatened to wash the crew out ofher. The Coxswain then weighedanchor, went half a mile northwards,and, with the help of the drogue, took theLife-boat through a narrow passage in

the rocks, so as to get between the wreckand the shore. Heavy seas were con-stantly breaking over her, but she suc-ceeded without mishap in getting

i through the rocks and then along a very| narrow channel until she was on the leeI side of the trawler. A lifebuoy and line' were floated down to the vessel, and byI means of them the Life-boat was hauledI alongside and took off the crew. With! great difficulty the Life-boat was gotI clear of the rocks again.

Altogether the service took two hours,i but the actual rescue was carried out; in about half an hour. Not only was

the surf very heavy, but the tide wasfalling, which added considerably tothe danger of the service. It was onlythe excellent seamanship of the Cox-swain and his perfect knowledge of therocks and currents which made possiblethe rescue of the nine men and saved theLife-boat herself from being wrecked.

In recognition of the skill and gal-lantry shown, the Institution awardedits Bronze Medal to the Coxswain,William Robinson, and made additionalmonetary awards to the Crew andhelpers.

Four Bronze Medals for Shore-boat Services.Newhaven (Sussex), South Shields (Northumberland).

THE Institution has awarded BronzeMedals for gallantry in saving life tofour men, all four of whom ran greatrisk of losing their lives.

On the afternoon of 21st July a smallyacht, Fidelity, was caught in a strong8. W. gale off Newhaven, when on her wayto Newhaven from Cowes. Three personswere on board, her owner (Mr. F. E.Cleverton), his wife, and a deck-hand(Mr. Williams). The yacht was dis-masted, and was driven towards theshore near the East Pier, where there isalways a very heavy sea in the shoalwaters in S.W. gales.

The Newhaven Motor Life-boat waslaunched, and found that the yacht wasalready in the broken water close to theshore. There was no time to anchor andveer down or for any manoeuvring, andthe Coxswain took the direct butdangerous course of going straightthrough the heavy sea, which waspractically abeam. He got the Life-boatalongside, calling to those on board theyacht to be ready to jump, but they wereso exhausted or unnerved that theymade no attempt to do it. A successionof heavy seas then struck the yacht andshe was carried still further towards theshore, where, in spite of every effort, the

! Life-boat could not get near enough to' I help her.

Meanwhile, a motor cyclist who waspassing, Mr. C. J. Skinner of Newhaven,saw the yacht's danger, and ran into a

neighbouring inn to get a rope. Withthis round his waist he plunged into thebreakers, and both Mrs. Cleverton, who :was half-unconscious, and Mr. Williams ,were got ashore alive. Mr. Cleverton,who had made a gallant effort to save : .his wife, then jumped overboard, but in ! 'spite of the efforts of the people on :shore, he was drowned. On two pre-vious occasions he had had narrowescapes from being drowned whileyachting. In addition to the BronzeMedal awarded to Mr. Skinner—who rana great risk from the heavy seas, whichwas only slightly diminished by the rope jround his waist—the Institution has 'made additional monetary awards to the jCoxswain and his Crew in recognition of jthe boldness and decision which was jshown.

South Shields.The second service took place a few !

days later at South Shields. On the jmorning of 25th July, two men, Mr. Croftand Mr. Scott, went out in a small f oy boatto fish. They were caught in a squalland their boat became unmanageable.They tried to enter the harbour, but thewind and heavy sea swept them away,and they were carried towards the TrowRocks. They succeeded in anchoring,but the cable parted, and their boatdrove ashore, being continually sweptby the breakers.

They had been seen from the shore,

and a messenger went to ask the CoastGuard to launch their boat, but theirdanger became so great that two youngmen who were watching, Mr. GeoffreyJagger and Mr. Arnold Millar, decidedto launch a surf-boat. They were toldthat such a boat could not live in the

i sea which was running, but they insisted| on putting out, and when they wereI within hailing distance, shouted to Crofti and Scott to try and follow them. This! they managed to do for about 30 yards,| but then the foy boat was swamped,1 Croft being thrown into the sea, while

Scott managed to cling to the boat andi was washed ashore. At the same

moment the rescuing boat was capsized,and both Jagger and Millar were flunginto the sea. Jagger immediately swamtowards Croft, and Millar made for hisown boat, which was bottom up, reachedit, and soon afterwards found that hewas touching bottom. He then sawthat Jagger was unable to manage byhimself, and that CJroft, who could notswim, was going under to every wave.He made for Croft and managed tohold him up until Jagger was able tojoin him, when they succeeded togetherin getting Croft, who was now un-conscious, into shallow water. Twoobher men waded out to their help,and one of them rendered first-aid toCroft. The Institution, besides awarding

Bronze Medals to Mr. Jagger and Mr.Millar, sent a Letter of Thanks and amonetary award to this man, Mr. B.McReady, a miner.

The third service was also at SouthShields. At dusk on 9th August last, asmall pleasure steamer wished to landsome people at Coble Landing, and asmall boat went out in answer to herhails. She had room for two or threepeople, but seven attempted to get intoher. She capsized, and they were allthrown into the water. Fortunatelythey were able to get hold either of theboat itself or of oars—all but one man,Andrew Skinner, who sank more thanonce and was carried away by the tide,which was running at about two knots.

An Ordinary Seaman of the TyneDivision R.N.V.R., Michael Campbell,saw what had happened from the shore,and at once dived in, stopping only tothrow off his coat. He swam out thirtyyards, seized Skinner, who was in gravedanger of drowning, and in spite ofSkinner's struggles, which threatened todrag him under too, kept him afloatuntil a boat arrived and rescued them.

The Institution gave Campbell amonetary award in addition to theBronze Medal, and also rewarded themen who manned the boat and rescuedfive of the other passengers in additionto Skinner and Campbell.

Two Long Distance Services.Stromness, Orkneys; Wick, Caithness-shire.

ON the night of June 13th the Motor |Life-boat at Stromness was called out tothe help of a large steamer, the HastingsCounty, of Bergen, on her way fromHamburg to Montreal with a generalcargo, which the Coast Guard had re-ported to have gone ashore at Auskerry.When the Life-boat was launched at11.30 there was a thick fog, with amoderate wind from S.E., changingafterwards to N.E., and a moderatesea. The fog cleared later on, but thewind got up and the sea became fairly \heavy. The wreck was reached at fivein the morning, and the Life-boat took •off 31 of her crew of 40, the Captain, iSecond Mate and seven men remaining ion board. They were taken off later by ,

a tug. The 31 rescued men were takento Kirkwall, and were landed there atabout nine in the morning. The Life-boat also towed two of the ship's boatswhich had the men's clothing on board.Two hours later she left Kirkwall again,and reached Stromness at 4.30 in theafternoon. She had been out for seven-teen hours and had travelled abouteighty-five miles. This is another to beadded to a number of very fine long-distance services which the StromnessMotor Life-boat has carried out.

Wick.ON the afternoon of 29th August newswas received at Wick of a vessel, foundlater to be the steamer Munin, of Bergen,

Norway, which had gone ashore on theeast side of North Ronaldshay, thenorthernmost island of the Orkneys,seventy-one miles away. The Strom-ness Motor Life-boat not being availableas she was undergoing her annualsurvey, the Wick Motor Life-boat waslaunched at 4.30 P.M. A strong S.S.E.breeze was blowing, the sea was roughand there was fog. At midnight theLife-boat arrived off Start Point in San-day Island, and, owing to the extremedarkness, the Coxswain decided that hemust have someone on board with localknowledge. He, therefore, put back toStronsay, and there learnt that the

vessel had refloated and had reachedKirkwall safely. The Life-boat, afterrefuelling, returned to Wick, arriving atfour in the afternoon of the followingday. She had been out for just undertwenty-four hours and had covered 113miles. This almost equals the serviceof the Stromness Life-boat, which, on22nd September, 1922, rescued nine menfrom the trawler The Cornel, of Aberdeen.On that occasion she was out for four-teen hours and travelled 114 miles. Inrecognition of the long and arduousnature of the service the Institutiongave the Wick Coxswain and Crew addi-tional monetary awards.

A Gallant Ramsgate Cook.ON 29th September, 1925, the trawlerRig, of Ramsgate, was wrecked offTolpedn, Cornwall, in a thick fog, whenreturning from a fishing voyage atSwansea. She had nine men on board.Seven of the nine were rescued from theshore by the Life-Saving apparatus, andthe trawler was salved by the PenleeMotor Life-boat. Before this happenedan attempt had been made to launch theship's dinghy, but her keel had caught onthe rail. The trawler was lying at anangle of about 45 degrees, and when sixof the men made a united effort to getthe dinghy clear, she took a sudden run,and all six were flung into the sea.Two of them, one of whom was theskipper, were never seen again. The matesucceeded in swimming back to thetrawler, and the other three men, clingingto thekeelof theupturneddinghy, driftedrapidly away.

One of the three men who were stillon board was Mr. E. J. Ebbett, thecook. He threw off his clothes, made alight line fast round his body, and

jumped overboard. According to thestatement of the owners of the trawlerhe swam between 120 and 130 yardsbefore he reached the dinghy with hisline. It was made fast, and he and thethree other men were safelj hauled backto the trawler, although the dinghyturned over three times on the way.When they were got aboard again theywere too exhausted even to speak. Atthe time little or nothing was said of thisgallant action, and it was not until eightmonths later that the full particularswere brought to the notice of the Institu-tion.

Mr. Ebbett has been awarded theThanks of the Institution inscribed onVellum and a monetary reward. Thepresentation was made by the Hon.Esmond Harmsworth, M.P. for Thanet,and a member of the Committee ofManagement of the Institution, at theRamsgate Town Hall on 16th July.The Mayor, who presided, said thatEbbett's name would be inscribed on thetown's Roll of Honour.

Rescue of Bathers in Distress.TWICE during th? past summer Life-boats have saved the lives of batherswho had got into difficulties. On eachoccasion the Life-boat was out onother duties and went to the rescue inthe nick of time.

On the afternoon of 20th July theMotor Life-boat at Barry Dock wasdoing machinery trials with half a crewon board. Shouts were heard from tliecliffs, a man was seen floating in thebroken water at the foot of them, and

almost at the same moment anotherman was seen to jump into the sea tohis help. The Life-boat was broughtround, and ran towards the shore. Twoother men, both fully dressed, were thenseen to jump into the sea. The Life-boat was taken in to within about tenfeet of the cliffs, at some risk to herself,for not only was the wind strong and thesea rough, but there was only five or sixfeet of water, and broken rocks all round. ;

The four men were seen, two on each '•side of the bow. The bather who hadgot into difficulties had been swept onto some rocks, with the result, as wasdiscovered later, that several of his ribswere broken, and he was floating facedownwards. The man who had jumpedin to the rescue first was much exhausted,and he also appeared to have beeninjured on the rocks. The other two,fully dressed, were just able to keepafloat, and no more. They too werebeing carried towards the rocks,

aboard. First aid was given by theBowman, but it was half an hour beforethe two men were brought round.

Meanwhile, on the other side of theLife-boat, one of the two men washolding up the other, who had becomeunconscious. A rope was got to him,but in seizing it he lost his hold of theunconscious man, who was drownedBut for the presence of the Life-boatthe other three men would undoubtedlyhave lost their lives also.

The other rescue took place at theInaugural Ceremony of the Great Yar-mouth and Gorleston Motor Life-boaton llth August. After the ceremonythe Life-boat went down the river andout to sea, where she gave a display oflife-saving. As she was on her way back,one of the Crew saw a swimmer makingsigns. He seemed to be in difficulties,and the Life-boat put about. When hewas pulled on board, he was too ex-hausted to speak, but it was found laterthat, having swum far out, he had beencaught in a strong ebb, had becomecompletely exhausted struggling againstit, and was being carried out to sea.But for the opportune arrival of theLife-boat he would almost certainlyhave been drowned.

Charity Ending at Home.A Service by the Bomber Motor Life-boat.

"From the calamity of shipwreck, no one can say that he may at all times remain free,and whilst he is now providing only for the safety of others, a day may come which will

render the cause his own."—Sir William Hillary.

LAST year a lady living near Doncasterorganized an appeal which raised £8.This year she arranged to make a similarappeal in September. At the end of ,August she wrote that she would " doher utmost to make it a success," for herown father had just been rescued by aLife-boat. He was returning to theHumber, from Bridlington regatta, on14th August on board the racing yachtPiccolo. A strong breeze was blowing,and a sudden heavy squall carried awaythe yacht's mast and sails. She washelpless and in danger of drifting on to

the Binks Sandbank. The HumberMotor Life-boat was launched, and theyacht and the four people on board weretowed into Grimsby.

The Institution has also received acheque for £5 from her father, who wrote :" I cannot thank your great Institutionsufficiently, and my only regret is thatI am not in a position to give more. Ifyou will send me a collecting box I wiDkeep it in a prominent place, and hopeto be able to still further help such agreat cause."

Belgian Motor Life-boats.IN The Lifeboat for November, 1925,we published an article on the Life-boat Service of Belgium. At that timethere were on the thirty-five miles of theBelgian coast ten Life-saving Posts, eachprovided with a Pulling Life-boat andRocket Apparatus, but a Commissionwas then sitting to consider methods ofimproving the organization of the Ser-vice, and the question of adoptingmotor power.

In August, 1925, delegates from thisCommission had visited Margate inorder to study the Motor Life-boat ofthe Watson Cabin type which, the yearbefore, had been sent to that Station.The article recorded that they were" astonished at the rapidity with whichthe Life-boat was launched, the smooth

and consistent running of the engine,and the perfection of the wholeinstallation."

Following on this visit the Institutionlast spring supplied the Belgian MarineAdministration, which controls the Life-

(boat Service, with complete plans of theWatson Cabin type of Life-boat, follow-ing in this its invariable practice ofputting its experiences and inventionsat the service of other countries. Fromthese plans the Belgian Marine Adminis-tration has had two Motor Life-boatsbuilt by a German firm. Two picturesof them appear on page 332, from whicht will be seen that, with slight modi-

fications, they are tie same as theWatson Cabin Life-boats on our owncoasts.

Reserve Fleets of Life-boats.IN order to be ready for any emergencyon the coast the Institution keeps at itsStoreyard at Poplar, on the Thames, aEeserve Fleet of Life-boats. One of theseBoats can be sent at a moment's noticeto any place on the coast where theStation Life-boat has been damaged.All the Boats in the Reserve Fleet havealready seen service on the coast, andhave been withdrawn either because ofthe closing of a Station, or to make wayfor Motor Life-boats.

Owing to the fact that the ReserveFleet was increasing beyond the- accom-modation of the Storeyard, it has been

decided to keep at Poplar a FirstReserve Fleet of ten Life-boats, and toform a Second Reserve Fleet at Coweswith the remainder, bringing up Boatsfrom Cowes to Poplar as they are re-quired to take the place of Boats sentfrom Poplar to the coast. The SecondReserve Fleet will, to begin with, numbernine, and at the beginning of June eightof these nine Boats were sent down toSouthampton by road, and then towed tothe dockyard at Cowes. The ninth wentstraight from her Station. Altogetherthese nine Boats have a record of 145years' service, and have rescued 701 lives.

Old Life-boats.Some Examples of their Conversion into Yachtj.

eve ything is done to make theLife-boats of the Institution as perfectas possible in material and workman-ship, and since they are -withdrawnfrom their Stations as soon as theybegin to fall below the very highstandard of seaworthiness which theInstitution considers it necessary tomaintain, it will be readily understoodthat, even when they are sold out of theService, they are still fit for many yearsof work of a less exacting sort. Life-boats, when they cease to be Life-boats,do, in fact, play many parts, and somego to very distant places.

In The Lifeboat for February, 1922,some particulars were given of a Life-boat which had been converted into amotor-launch on the Kowie River, inSouth Africa. Another, and a famousLife-boat, has recently gone to Africa,the Steam Life-boat The Queen. Shewas the third of the six Steam Life-boats which have been built for the jInstitution, was completed in 1897, andfor 26 years was stationed at NewBrighton, where she went out 81 times onservice, and rescued 196 lives. In 1923she was replaced by a Motor Life-boatand sold out of the Service. Her pur-chaser intended, at first, to use her forpleasure cruises on her own river, theMersey, but he sold her to the Elder-Dempster Line, which has had variousalterations made in her; and at thebeginning of June she sailed on board theliner Egori for the Gold Coast, where sheis to be used as a tender for landingpassengers through the surf at Sekondi.

Round our own coasts there are num-bers of Life-boats, now converted intoyachts, and we publish here pictures ofthree of them. They show how attrac-tive a Life-boat looks when converted.All three were Pulling and Sailing Life-boats.

The first of them is the Life-boatwhich was stationed at Polkerris, inCornwall, from 1904 to 1922. She wasof the Watson type, 35 feet by 9 feetwide. She now has a cabin 11 feet 6inches long with 5 feet 6 inches head-

room. She has been fitted with hollowspars and carries roller jib, high-peakedmainsail, and Bermuda mizen. She hastwo centre keels, with tackles workingover the cabin-top, and has shownexcellent sailing qualities. Her owner,who converted her. attributes thisto the fact that she was of theWatson type. She has two engines,each of 6 h.p., and two propellers.These have proved the least satisfactorypart of the conversion. The photo-graph shows an 8 feet dinghy, at theafter-end, which stows on the coamingof the well, with the bow on the cabintop. This Life-boat is now the GreyFox, and is at Lyme Regis.

A Graceful Yacht.

The photograph of the late PortErrol (Aberdeenshire) Life-boat, showswhat a very graceful yacht can bemade of a Life-boat, Like the PolkerrisLife-boat, she was of the Watson type,the John Fortune, which was at PortErrol from 1904 to 1914, and then in theReserve Fleet, until she was sold outof the service in 1923. Another recentconversion is the Elizabeth Leicester,a Life-boat of the self-righting type,which, after 21 years at Whitehaven,Cumberland, was sold out of the Servicein 1924, is now the yacht White Lady,and can be seen on the Thames.

Two Life-boats which have beenconverted this year are the JohnGroome, which was at Killongh (Co.Down, Ireland) from 1901 to 1914, andthen at Point of Air, in Flintshire,until sold out of the Service in 1923.and the James Cullen, which, from 1904to 1926, was at Bull Bay, in Anglesey.The John Groome was of the Liverpooltype, 35 feet by 10 feet, and has beenconverted into a motor yacht, theconversion being carried out by Messrs.W. & J. Leslie, of Poplar, who do agreat deal of work for the Institution.The boat's hull has been gutted, theair-cases being removed, and a cabinhas been built up, giving 5 ieet 8 incheshead-room, this cabin being divided

into saloon, forecastle and galley, withsleeping accommodation for four people.Under the name of Cloud she is now atPortree, in Skye.

The James Cullen was of the Watsontype, and was sold out of the Servicewhen the Bull Bay station was closedlast June. She was converted into amotor-boat at once, but she has not

forgotten her earlier calling. On 26thAugust she was launched to the helpof the motor schooner Reciprocity, ofLiverpool, which was on fire off DulasIsland, Anglesey. The crew of theReciprocity had taken to their boat,and the James Cullen picked them \ipbefore her old colleague of the Service, theMoelfre Life-boat, arrived on the scene.

Life-boat Families.*The Aindows of Formby, Lancashire.

ONE of the most remarkable familyrecords in the history of the Life-boatService is that of the Aindows of Formby,in Lancashire, who for nearly 60 yearsprovided the greater part of the Crewof the Life-boat at Formby, a veryisolated place on the coast betweenLiverpool and Southport. This Station,together with the Stations at Point ofAir, Hilbre Island and Hoylake,was taken over by the Institutionin 1894, from the Mersey Docks andHarbour Board.

The first of the family to be con-nected with this Station was HenryAindow, who became a member of theCrew in 1836. In 1862 the Life-boatwas capsized in a terrible gale, and allbut three of the Crew were drowned.One of the three was Henry Aindow,who next day was found, almost dead,lying under the Life-boat, which hadbeen washed ashore.

A new Crew was formed, HenryAindow being appointed Coxswain. He

: had under him in the boat six of hissons and two grandsons—nine Aindowsin all. He served as Coxswain until1885. In that year he retired, after 49years' service, and was presented bythe Liverpool Shipwreck and HumaneSociety with a Certificate, a purse ofmoney, and a Silver Medal.

Henry Aindow was succeeded as Cox-swain by his son John, then aged45, who had under him in the Crew,four brothers, of whom one was SecondCoxswain, five sons, and thre« nephews—

thirteen Aindows in all. AnotherAindow, who was no relation, was alsoa member of the Crew during his termof service. When the Institution took ;over the Station in 1894, John Aindowcontinued to act as Coxswain, his son '•John became Second Coxswain, and theCrew also included two of his brothers,four other sons and two nephews—tenof the family in all. There was also twoother Aindows in the Crew who were not :relations.

John Aiudow served as Coxswain,until 1910, when he retired, havingthen been Coxswain for 25 years.His son, the Second Coxswain, JohnAindow, junior, succeeded him, and wasCoxswain until 1919, when the Stationwas closed. He, too, had a Crew com-posed for the greater part of his own ;family. His Second Coxswain was hisbrother Charles, and three other brothersand two cousins were in the Crew—eightAindows in all. During this period ofnine years, five other Aindows alsoserved in the Life-boat, who were notrelations.

Thus, from 1836 to 1919, a period of83 years, there was always a memberof the Aindow family in the FormbyLife-boat; for 57 years an Aindow wasCoxswain, three generations holdingthe post in succession, and duringthose 57 years the greater part of theCrew was composed of members of thefamily, altogether fifteen of them serv-ing in the Life-boat. For length of ,service and numbers, this is, we think,a family record which can hardly be !equalled anywhere round our coasts. ;

The Fishwives of Cullercoats.Over £500 Collected in Five Years.

THIS August, for the fifth year running,the fishwives of Cullercoats made acollection for the Institution on theoccasion of the road exercise and launchof the Life-boat in Whitley Bay. Onceagain, as they have already done eachyear, they heat their previous record.

False Alarms.(N The Lifeboat for November, 1925, twocases were mentioned of Life-boats goingout owing to lights on land being mis-taken for lights at sea. In one case theSelsey Life-boat cruised about for threehours and could find no vessel, the onlyexplanation appearing to be that thesupposed flares were the headlights of amotor-car close to the seashore. In theother case a bonfire on land was reportedto the Life-boat Station at Skegness asa vessel on fire at sea.

Another curious false alarm occurredat Kilmore, Co. Wexford, on 25th Febru-ary last. The Life-boat was launched inrain and fog, with a rough sea, to whatappeared to be a boat in distress in thesurf. In the fog the Life-boat went pastthe place without seeing anything, buta moan was heard, and she went backto find, not a boat, but a large whistlingbuoy, with a tall topmark, which hadgone aground.

A similar case occurred on 22nd Marchlast in the Isle of Man. On the eveningof that day what appeared to be a vesselon fire, about seven or eight miles away,was reported to the Douglas Station.The signal was fired to summon theCrew, and the launch was made withexceptional promptness, the Motor Life-boat being in the water four minuteslater. A gale was blowing, with a roughsea, but the Life-boat went in search ofthe vessel, fifteen or sixteen milesseaward, without finding any trace ofher. She had been launched about 9.30in the evening, and it was not untilfive hours later that she returned.

Meanwhile the Coast Guard had noti-fied the Pulling and Sailing Life-boat atPeel. She was launched at 10.30 P.M.and also cruised about for several hours,not reaching her Station again until4.30 the following morning. She alsocould find no trace of the burningvessel, and it was discovered later thatthe flames seen were not a vessel, butburning gorse in County Down, Ireland,nearly fifty miles away.

Two other cases, both very similar,occurred during May. In one case amast with a flag on it, placed on a sand-

bank by a surveying vessel, was mis-taken for a small vessel gone ashore, andreported to the Life-boat Station as suchby a Light Vessel. In the other a yachtwhich had been lying at anchor wasthought to have sunk, her mast showingjust above water, but it was iound thatthe supposed mast was a spar attachedto a cable and anchor which had beenslipped by the yacht when she sailedduring the night.

It may be of interest to recall also someof the.cases of false alarms which haveoccurred in the past. A man had goneout wild-fowl shooting off Anglesey ; hisshots were thought to be signals of dis-tress and the Life-boat was launched.

A Wedding Bonfire.

On several occasions guns fired bybattleships at practice have beenthought to be distress signals and Life-boats have been launched, but it is nowthe duty of the Coast Guard to givewarning in advance of such firing.

There have been several cases of bon-fires on the beach being mistaken foryessels on fire at sea. On one suchoccasion the bonfire had been lit tocelebrate a wedding.

Another wedding also led to theassembly of a Life-boat Crew. In thiscase it was fireworks, not a bonfire. Fire-works, in fact, have caused a number offalse alarms. On one occasion theywere being fired to celebrate the NewYear, and on another, in 1900, the reliefof Ladysmith. It has happened morethan once that pleasure steamers havecelebrated their last trip of the season byfiring rockets and have been thoughtto be in distress, and three Life-boatswere once launched in response to rocketswhich it was later supposed must havebeen fired by the French Fleet onmanoeuvres.

Thus it will be seen that during thefour months there were forty-one ser-vices, in which over sixty boats andvessels were involved. In no case wasthe owner, so far as can be traced, acontributor to the Institution, althoughin two cases they collected money for it;and in only two cases were donationsgiven afterwards in gratitude for theservice.

A donation of £5 has been receivedfrom Lieutenant B. Wood in gratitude

for a service to his yacht Doris on the18th July. She was at anchor offMoelfre during a strong gale with aheavy sea, and as there seemed a risk ofher being swamped the Coxswain of theLife-boat at Moelfre and four other menwent out in an ordinary boat, andlanded the Doris's crew. They wererewarded by the Institution, but as itwas a shore-boat, and not a Life-boatservice, it is not included in the abovelist.

Gifts from Crews.ON 12th July, 1926, the RhoscolynLife-boat launched to and stood by theS.B. Kvrkwynd, of Glasgow, which hadstranded, during a thick fog, two milesto the east of Rhoscolyn. The Life-boat

returned arid, later, made a second tripto the steamer, and helped to refloat her.Out of the salvage received for thissecond service the Grew has given £12to the Anglesey Branch.

She first became associated with theService in the days of the Life-boatSaturday Fund, and when the organiza-tion of the Fund was taken over by theInstitution in 1910 she and a number ofother ladies who had been working forit became members of the BranchCommittee. In 1912 a separate Ladies'Committee was formed, and Mrs. Astley

It is to the taskof organizing theAnnual Life-boatDay to which Mrs.Astley R o b e r t shas given her chiefattention, and thesteadily increasingfigures are elo-quent of the suc-cess of her work.In 1910, the lastyear of the Life-boat S a t u r d a yFund, that Fundcollected nearly£73, w h i l e therevenue of theBranch itself was£87, received froma n n u a l subscri-bers. In 1911 the

Life-boat Day, organized by Mrs. AstleyRoberts and the other ladies who hadjust joined the Committee, raised nearly£71, and the total revenue of the Branchwas £196. From then onwards therevenue of the Branch rapidly increased,and the appeal has been carried steadilyfurther afield in the country round East-bourne. By 1915 the revenue had beenmore than doubled, and the collection,organized by the Ladies' Committee, wasmore than three times as large as it hadbeen three years before. Three yearslater, in 1918, it reached the magnificent

total of £601. Thus, at the end of onlysix years, Life-boat Day alone collectedin Eastbourne a sum three times as muchas the whole Branch revenue in 1912.1918, the year of victory, was an excep- \tional year elsewhere as well as in jEastbourne. The following year therewas everywhere a decline. But since !1919 Eastbourne Life-boat Day hasalways raised more than £500, and thisyear it has beaten the record of 1918 byraising £609.

Altogether in the fifteen years sincethe Eastbourne Ladies' Committee was ,formed, with Mrs. Astley Roberts asits President, the Life-boat Day hasraised nearly £6,500.

Although the chief increase has comein the work of the Ladies' Life-boatGuild, the general revenue of the Branch <has also grown in a notable way. Lastyear the Collecting Boxes alone, at theBoathouse -and elsewhere, contributed£200, and for the first time the totalrevenue of the Branch exceeded £1,000.Only twelve other towns raised over£1,000, but, with the exception of Oxford, |they were all very much larger than !Eastbourne.

Mrs. Astley Roberts has not beencontent with making Life-boat Day such Ia conspicuous success. Since 1924 shehas found a new outlet for her energyand another way of helping the Institu-tion by organizing Life-boat Balls.They, too, have proved so successfulthat "Life-boat Ball" will probably

become as well established an annualevent in Eastbourne as Life-boat Day.This year, in fact, there have been twoBalls, and at the second Mrs. AstleyRoberts arranged a special dance inwhich the dancers represented all thenations which have Life-boats.

Mrs. Astley Roberts herself wouldnot wish any record of her success to theLife-boat Cause to be published unlesssome reference were made to those whofor many years have worked with her—to the late Honorary Secretary of theBranch, Mr. A. E. Infield, to the presentHonorary Secretary, Mr. AlexanderRobertson, who, since his appointmentthree years ago, has devoted himselfwith the greatest energy and success tothe work of the Station, and particularlyto the task of attracting Eastbourne'smany visitors to the Life-boat House,and above all to Mr. Mark Hookham,who has been a member of the BranchCommittee since 1908, and for manyyears acted as Honorary Secretary of theLife-boat Day, receiving in 1923, as asmall mark of the Institution's grati-tude, its Record of Thanks and GoldPendant.

Mrs. Astley Roberts herself receivedthe Gold Brooch in 1917. In 1924 shewas elected an Honorary Life-Governorof the Institution, and when the Inau-gural Ceremony of the Eastbourne MotorLife-boat was held in 1922 it was feltthat to no one else did the honour ofnaming the Boat more fitly belong.

The Blackpool Life-boat Band.THIS is the story of the Blackpool Life-boat Band, which is very proud of beingthe only Life-boat Band in the world.

Blackpool was a very different placeforty-two years ago from the popularseaside resort of to-day, and the mem-bers of the Life-boat Crew, finding thatthe winter evenings dragged heavily,

approached the Coxswain — '; Bob "Bickerstaffe—and suggested that theyshould form a brass band. The sugges-tion was not without its humorous side,for not one man knew a single note ofmusic or possessed an instrument of anykind, neither had they the necessarymoney to purchase them, and theCoxswain's reply was that " To getmusic out of a fisherman would be harderthan getting blood out of a stone." ButBob Bickerstaffe's heart was not ofstone. He sought out his cousins Johnand Tom Bickerstaffe, a subscriptionlist was started, and before long the

disaster befell the fishing industry at theneighbouring port of Fleetwood. Sevenfishing boats went down, and thirty-threechildren lost their fathers in one stormynight. The Life-boat Band acted atonce. It paraded Blackpool's streetsand collected money with such successthat a tour of the Lancashire towns wasorganised. It played morning, noon,and night outside the mills and work-shops, in the market places, and where-ever crowds assembled, until sufficientmoney was raised to meet all claimsupon the fund which had meantime beenopened. taken during the Boer War, but duringthe Great War of 1914-1918 there wasno band. Almost every member of itvolunteered and was accepted for warservice. At different times the Life-boatBand has visited Manchester, Birming-ham, Newcastle - on - Tyne, Sheffield,Leicester, Nottingham, and other places,each member giving his services in thecause of some deserving object.

There are still six of the original mem-bers playing in the band, which has nowbecome one of Blackpool's proud insti-tutions, and every year it is to be foundleading the Mayoral procession to Churchon " Mayor's Sunday," and playing atthe annual Armistice Day service at thefoot of Blackpool's war memorial onPrincess Parade.

The photograph of the Band, whichappears with this article, was takenrecently, when Alderman Sir JohnBickerstafie, J.P., presented new uni-forms to the men in honour of theknighthood which he had just received.Born at Blackpool seventy-eight yearsago, he spent his youth in the boatsowned by his father, and on the sands, ;which no man has since done more to •popularise. He was one of the firstvolunteers of Blackpool's original Life- \boat—the Robert William—and has jbeen out to four rescues. The first wasin 1864, the year in which the Stationwas established, when he was sixteenyears of age. On that occasion the crew [

: of the French brig St. Michael wasbrought ashore in a high sea, and two

1 members of the Blackpool Life-boatCrew, who were placed on board, safelytook the vessel into Fleetwood. Thefollowing year he was one of the Crew

j that was out on service for twenty-| eight hours when the barque Lexington,: of Nassau, ran on a sandbank.

Another memorable night was in 1892,! when the Siren was being hopelesslybuffeted about by the waves which werebreaking with tremendous force over

i the promenade. It was impossible toI launch the Life-boat, and all that thej Crew could do was to stand by. Thei Siren was washed towards the shore and! struck the stanchions of the North Pierj with great force. Sir John was among; the rescuers who carried the ship-wrecked crew into safety whilst the pier

I rocked and cracked, and, just as the lastman was saved, collapsed into the waves,

Altogether the Blackpool Life-boatshave been out on service thirty-eighttimes and have rescued 130 lives.

R. M. Ballantyne's "The Life-boat."IT is thirty-two years since R. M.Ballantyne died, and last year was thecentenary of his birth. He was writingfor nearly forty years, his first bookbeing published in 1856, and in thattime he produced eighty volumes. Ofthe first generation of boys who readand were thrilled by his books, very fewcan be left, and they are old men. Asecond generation read him with no lessavidity, and they are now middle-aged.The present generation has other gods,and probably does not even know thenames of " Coral Island " and " TheGorilla Hunters," " The World of Ice "and " Fighting the Flames."

But we have just discovered that he

is still read; and not only is he read,but he can still move the heart ofyouth. His book about the Life-boatService was published in 1864, with apreface thanking the Institution forthe help which it had given him. Beforehe wrote it he went down to Ramsgate,and (here made the acquaintance ofIsaac Jarman, who was Coxswain from1860 to 1870. That was over sixtyyears ago, but we received a shorttime ago a donation from a girl witha letter in which she says, " I read abook called ' The Life-boat,' by R. M.Ballantyne, and I want to help to makemore life-boats, so I am enclosing threeshillings."

Obituary.Sir William Cony, Bt.; Dr. J. Iredale, Honorary Secretary, Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire;

Mr. William Adams, late Coxswain, North Deal.Sir William Corry, Bt.

BY the death on 9th June last, in his68th year, of Sir William Corry, Bt.,one of the Directors of the Cunard Lineand the Dominion and CommonwealthLine, the Institution lost a friend whofor many years had given it the helpand advice of a very wide experienceof shipping. Sir William Corry was amember of the Committee of Manage-ment for nearly 30 years, from 1896 to1924. In 1912, when the Institutionwas beginning its efforts to induceshipowners and shipping companies togive a larger measure of support to theLife-boat Service, Sir William Corry tookup the idea of trying to get owners tocontribute a modest sum (£1) per shipper annum, and he at once gave theexample by obtaining from the Common-wealth and Dominion Line, of which hewas a Director, a regular contribution onthis basis. The Institution also largelyowed to him a donation of £1,000 re-ceived in 1922, towards its appeal for£600,000 for the building of Motor Life-boats from the Cunard Steamship Com-pany, of which Sir William Corry wasalso a Director, and its allied lines.Although the example of contributing£1 per ship has not, as yet, been generallyfollowed, a considerable number ofcompanies have since adopted this prin-ciple, which had, indeed, long beforebeen exemplified by Sir John (now Lord)Maclay, the head of the Glasgow Com-pany of Maclay and Mclntyre.

When, in 1922, the Institution madea special appeal to all the big shippingand trawling companies to give it muchmore generous support, it was accom-panied by a personal request from SirWilliam Corry and another prominentshipowner, Sir August Cayzer, who wasalso a member of the Committee ofManagement, that the appeal should beconsidered at the earliest opportunity.In this and other ways, Sir WilliamCorry gave the Institution his veryready help. His business was on thesea ; one of his recreations was yacht-ing ; and as a member of the Committee

not only of the Institution, but of theRoyal Merchant Seamen's Orphanage,King George's Fund for Sailors and thetraining ship Worcester, he gave muchof his time and help to the great charitiesof the sea.

Dr. J. Iredale.

By the death of Dr. J. Iredale, ofMablethorpe, Lincolnshire, on 8th Sep-tember last, the Institution has lost oneof its oldest Honorary Secretaries. Dr.Iredale became the Honorary Secretaryof the Station at Mablethorpe in 1891,and when it was closed twenty-nine yearslater, he continued to act as HonorarySecretary of a Financial Branch atMablethorpe. When he died he hadserved the Institution for thirty-fiveyears. In 1902 he was presented witha pair of Binoculars as a small mark ofthe Institution's gratitude for the helpwhich he had given it. Dr. Iredale'sdaughter, who has organized the Life-boat Days at Mablethorpe, has verykindly consented to continue his workas Honorary Secretary.

William AdamsWilliam Adams, Coxswain of the North

Deal Life-boat, died on 23rd October last,in his seventy-sixth year. Probably noLife-boat Coxswain was better known tothe public, and few have had a more dis-tinguished career. Born on 5th April,1851, he joined the Crew of the NorthDeal Life-boat as a young man. He wasappointed Coxswain on 1st July, 1907,at the age of fifty-six, and retired at theend of 1920 at the age of sixty-nine.During his thirteen and a half years asCoxswain the Life-boat was launched122 times, rescued 321 lives, and savedfourteen vessels.

Three times William Adams won theSilver Medal of the Institution forgallantry. The first occasion was on the4th February, 1916, when the steamtrawler De la Pole sank on the GoodwinSands. A tremendous sea was runningand breaking right over her, but theLife-boat was able to get alongside, and

eleven men were rescued. The secondoccasion was also in 1916, on 20thNovember, when the Italian steameiVal Salice ran on the Goodwins. TheLife-boat reached her about midnight.A tremendous gale was blowing, withblinding rainstorms; it was intenselydark: and the seas at times lifted theLife-boat almost as high as the steamer'smastheads ; but the whole crew of thirtywas rescued.

The third service for which CoxswainAdams was decorated was to the Toogo,a thiee-masted schooner of Esthonia, on1st November, 1919. With two extramen on board it took the Life-boat threehours to reach the Sands, against a wholegale. Just before the Life-boat reachedher the Toogo struck and sank ; but twoof her crew of eight were rescued fromamong the wreckage. The Life-boat wascontinually washed by heavy seas, andone of them, which broke right into theBoat, knocked down and injured Wil-

Four times William Adams wasspecially thanked or decorated byforeign Governments. The GermanGovernment thanked him and his Crew

' for their services to the s.s. Marie' Leonhardt in January, 1912, when the; North Deal Life-boat stood by, while the! actual rescue was carried out by theRamsgate Boat. The President of theUnited States presented him with a GoldWatch and Chain and each of the Crewwith a Gold Medal for the rescue inJanuary, 1919, of twenty-nine of the

! crew of the s.s. Piave. The ItalianGovernment presented him with aSilver Medal and each of the Crew with

I a Bronze Medal for the service to the ValI Salice, and the Esthonian Government| presented him and each member of theI Crew with the Silver Medal of theEsthonian Bed Cross for the service tothe Toogo.

Voted £4 to two men for rescuing theonly occupant of the open sailing boat Cvrleu;of Moelfre, which was capsized during asquall while out in a strong S.W. breeze andrough sea, on the 28th May, 1926. Xhesalvors who were on shore noticed that theboat seemed to be a long time coming roundMoelfre Island, and thinking that somethingmight be wrong, put off to investigate. Theyfound the occupant clinging to his capsizedboat, and picking him up took him ashore.Later several men endeavoured to salve theboat, but they got into difficulties and wererescued by the Moelfre Life-boat.

Voted £5 12s. 6rf. to nine men who putoff from Margate on the 16th May, in themotor boat Thantt Queen, and in a moderateN.N.E. gale with a very heavy sea, rescued,at considerable risk to themselves, a man anda woman from the cockle boat L.O. 239, ofSouthend-on-Sea, which had stranded onthe Margate Sands. The Margate MotorLife-boat first put out to the help of the boat,but was unable to reach her owing to theshallow water, and as there was no sign ofanyone on board she went to the TongueLightship to make enquiries. In the mean-time the wreck refloated on the rising tideand was driving across the sands whtn aman was seen to be on board. The motorboat Thanet Queen then put out and rescuedthe two people on board. The boat becamea total wreck.

Voted £2 to four men for putting off in amotor boat to the help of the steamer JollyCharles, of London, which stranded at New-haven, on the 10th June, and also granted3s. for petrol consumed. The Life-boat waslaid up for overhaul at the time, and themotor boat remained by the vessel until sherefloated and reached harbour.

Directed that a Letter of Thanks be sentto Coxswain ROBERT CROSS, who, assisted byfour other members of the permanent crew ofthe Humber Life-boat Station, rescued twoboys on the 30th May. Granted also 12*.to four men who helped to launch the boat.The boys had put off from Cleethorpes, butbeing inexperienced, were unable to managethe boat in the strong W.S.W. oreeze whichwas blowing and were carried out to sea.When they were picked up it was found thatboth the rudder and the oars of their boatwere broken, and that she had shipped aconsiderable quantity of water.

! seen about 8 P.M. two or three miles fromI shore, being driven out to sea. As night

was coming on Mr. Chaplin hastily consultedthe police, and it was decided that Mr.Rowland's motor boar Sunbeam was bestsuited to go to the rescue. Mr. Rowlandwas found, and accompanied by his son-in-law,Mr. Rowntree, and Mr. Chaplin, immediatelyput off. After searching for about one and ahalf hours, they found the boat very nearlywaterlogged, with its occupants in an exhaustedstate. They took the boat in tow andreached shore again at 11.45 P.M. Had it notbeen for the promptness of all concerned in therescue, the lives of the occupants of the boatwould undoubtedly have been lost.

The Active wasseen to be in difficulties, with a disabledengine, about two and a half miles to theE.N.E. She had no sails, and as there wasa moderate S.W. breeze with a moderate sea,she was in danger of driving on to a lee shore.The salvors put off in a motor-boat and takingthe disabled boat in tow brought her safelyto harbour. No great risk was incurred, butthis timely help undoubtedly saved theActive from driving ashore. A sum of 6s. wasgranted to cover the cost of petrol used.

Voted £1 17s. 6d. to the Life-boat Coxswainat Poolbeg, and four other men, for rescuing,on the 26th June, two boys who were seen tobe adrift in a small boat and appeared to bein danger of being carried out to sea. Alsoallowed 5s. for the use of the boat.

The yachtcame to anchor in Moelfre Bay during athunderstorm with a strong N.E. gale, and themen on board signalled for help as they thoughtshe might be swamped. The salvors took outthe Life-boat's boarding boat and broughtthe men ashore. The yacht rode out thestorm, and was able to leave next day.

Presented an Aneroid Barometer to Com-mander H. LrNKLATBB, of the yacht Theodora,and a pair of Binoculars to Mr. W. B. MONCAS,Pier Superintendent, Rosslare, together withthe sum of £2 each to two members of theTheodora's crew, three pier employees, andfive of the crew of the Great Western Railwaysteamer St. Patrick, in recognition of theirservices in manning a boat and going to thehelp of the fishing boat Avonmore, of CapeClear, on 2nd September. In a strong N.E.wind and rough sea the Awmmore struck theSplough Rock. She was seen by CommanderLinklater, who called for volunteers and wentout to the help of the Avonmore. He suc-ceeded in taking off her crew, seven in number,but then found very great difficulty in gettingback to Rosslare Harbour owing to the wind,tide, and rough sea. In the meantime informa-tion had reached Wexford and the Motor Life-boat put out. She found Commander Link-later's boat struggling to get back, took onboard both the rescuers and rescued—nineteenin all—and brought them and the boat backto Rosslare Pier.

Voted £2 and addressed a Letter of Thanksto Mr. T. CXJDDBSGTON for rescuing two boys, atLittlehampton, on the night of llth July.The boys' boat was run down by a motor boatand they were thrown into the water. Mr.Cuddington, Master of the yacht Daydream,heard their cries and immediately launchedhis dinghy. When he rescued the boys, oneof them was unconscious, and he applied firstaid—learnt whilst a member of the ShorehamLife-boat crew—before taking him to hospital.

Voted £1 IOs. to four men for rescuing fiveboys at Wicklow, on 28th July. During astrong W.N.W. breeze with a choppy sea theboys were seen to be drifting out to sea, andthe salvors manned a boat and brought (hemin. No risk was incurred, but the action ofthe men obviated the launch of the Life-boat.

Voted £1 17s. 6d. to five men for rescuingthe five men of the motor fishing-boat LordKoberts, of Bedcar, which was in distress offCoatham, on 20th August. Also allowed 2s.for petrol used. The boat was seen to beflying a distress signal, and in response themotor boat Mayflower put off and rescued thecrew before the arrival of the TeesmouthMotor Life-boat, which was farther from thescene. A strong westerly wind was blowing,but only slight risk was incurred by the salvors,for whom a small collection was made by eye-witnesses.

Voted £5 for division amongst eleven menwho launched and manned a boat—the lateBull Bay Life-boat converted into a motorboa£—and rescued the three hands of themotor vessel Reciprocity, of Liverpool, whichcaught fire off Bull Bay while bound fromHolyhead to Fleetwood on 26th August. Alsogranted £1 to cover the damage sustained bythe rescuing boat. Only slight risk wasincurred by the salvors, as the weather wasfine, but the Reciprocity had to be abandoned.

Voted 10*. to the Second Coxswain of theNew Brighton Life-boat and another life-boat-man, who, together with the Motor Mechanic,put off in the Life-boat's motor boarding-boaton 5th September, when some children werereported to be in a dangerous position on asand bank. On reaching the scene they foundthat the children had already been rescued.

Voted £2 for division amongst four men whorescued the two occupants of a motor boat offDouglas, on 30th August. Also granted Ifts,to cover the use of the salvors' boat and thefuel used. The motor boat Qeisha, was dis-abled by engine trouble in a nasty sea, -with a,strong south-easterly breeze. When informa-tion of the boat's need was received the Cox-swain of the Life-boat, together with threeother men, put off in a motor boat and pickedup the Geisha, which was in danger of beingdashed on to the rocks. No risk was incurred,but the prompt action saved the lives of theendangered men.

Voted £1 to Mr. WILLIAM JONES for rescuingthree persons and saving an open sailing boatat Tenby, on 12th September. While he wasat sea with a pleasure party he saw that theother boat was in distress and in danger ofbeing blown out to sea. He at once went toher help, took her in tow and brought her into

and found on reaching her that she had losther rudder and was driving ashore. In spiteof the strong S.W. wind and heavy sea thedisabled boat was towed into safety.

Voted £9 10s. to sixteen men for rescuing thethree occupants of the coble Minerva, offScarborough, on 25th July. Also granted£1 2«. 6d. to cover stores used. Two cobleswhich had been loading gravel at Cayton Bay,to the south of Scarborough, and were on theirway to Scarborough, were in some danger offoundering owing to the heavy sea and strongwind. Both boats were picked up by the

motor boat Pelican, but she found that shecould not make headway with both in tow andshe returned to Cayton Bay where she left oneof them. The other, the Minerva, she thenstarted to tow to Scarborough. The Minerva,however, broke adrift, and was then picked upby the motor boat Morning Star, which, withthe help of the Pelican, took her in tow. Theseoperations were being watched by the Life-boat Coxswain at Scarborough, who, decidingthat further help was needed, put out witheight other men in a larger, decked motor boat.This boat took the Minerva over from theMorning Star and the Pelican, and broughther into harbour.

Sublime Impertinence."OUR District Organizing Secretary in Ithe North of England has sent us the |following story as an example of " the ivalue of the sovereign and the power of ;suggestion." It is an excellent examplealso of the gift, invaluable to all whowork for a great charity, of asking atjust the right moment and in just theright way.

He was at a lunch where one of theguests boasted of having a real sovereign,which he produced to show that what hesaid was true. Our Organising Secre- 'tary saw his opportunity and took it.He said that it was surely a matter ofregret that, in spite of all the appeals tothe contrary, this sovereign should have 'been hoarded so long. He suggested jthat the hoarder could beat purge his

offence by handing it to the Life-boatService. He suggested further that itwould be a fitting penalty if he alsoimposed on himself a fine of a shilling tobe given to the same cause.

This courageous suggestion, aptlycombining an appeal for a good causewith an appeal to the feeling of goodcitizenship, was immediately accepted.The owner of the sovereign not onlyhanded it over accompanied by a shilling,but promised yet further gifts, for h\;said: '" Your sublime impertinence shallbe rewarded. You may count me as anannual subscriber of a guinea."

We do not know which to admiremost for neatly rising to the occasion,our new subscriber or our DistrictOrganizing Secretary.

Presentation at Westminster Hospital.IN April, 1926, the Institution awardedits Gold Brooch to Miss H. Denham,who for many years has been in theIncurable Ward at Westminster Hospital;and during the past seven years hascollected there for the Life-boat Servicenearly £30. Miss Denham has also beenmade a member of the Ladies' Life-boatGuild.

News from the Branches.Annual Meetings: Station Branches.

BLACKPOOL (LANCASHIRE).—On 1stJuly, Councillor T. P. Fletcher, J.P.,Deputy-Mayor, presiding. The reportfor the year ending 30th September,1925, showed that £371 had been col-lected, as compared with £621 in 1924,the Centenary Year. The AnnualReport also pointed out that the Life-boat Day had raised only £307, as com-pared with £500 in 1924. At one timethe Life-boat Day had been the onlyappeal of this sort, but now not onlythe hospital, but every other organiza-tion made a similar appeal, and it wasbecoming increasingly difficult to getcollectors.

Annual Meetings: Financial Branches.SHEFFIELD, YORKSHIRE.—On 17th

May, the Lord Mayor, Alderman J.Johnson, presiding. The Lord Mayorcontradicted a rumour which had beencirculated to the efiect that the cost ofthe administration of the Institutionwas abnormally large, and said that hewould like it to be known that it wasunder 5 per cent, of the income. TheAnnual Report for the year ending30th September, 1925, showed that £613had been collected, as compared with£556 in 1924. The Chairman of theBranch, Mr. T. Skelton Cch, remindedthe meeting that the project for pre-senting the Institution with a Life-boatto be named after Sheffield had not beenabandoned, and that it was hoped tobring it forward again when traderevived. The Bishop of Sheffield sug-gested that the clergy might refer tothe work of the Institution, even whenit was impossible for them to allowcollections to be taken in their churches.Mr. J. Blossom pointed out that theLife-boat Service cost the country l^d.per head of the population, but thatSheffield contributed only about \d. ahead. If it would make its contributionnot more than \d. a, head, then its totalcontribution would be over £2,000,instead of about £600.

PERTH, PERTHSHIRE.—On 27th May,the Rev. P. R. Landreth, Chairman of '

the Committee, presiding, supported bythe Right Hon. Lord Salvesen and theLord Provost. The report for the yearending 30th September, 1925, showedthat £379 had been collected, as com-pared with £424 in the previous year.After the meeting the Chairman pre-sented Mr. William Strachan, theHonorary Secretary and Treasurer,with the barometer awarded to him bythe Institution in recognition of hisservices during the past ten years.

GLASGOW, LANARKSHIRE.—On 1stJune, Sir William Raeburn, Chairmanof the Clyde Trust, and an ex-Presidentof the Chamber of Shipping of theUnited Kingdom, presiding. The reportfor the year ending 30th September,1925, showed that £2,659 had beencollected, as compared with £2,747 inthe previous year. A further sum of£1,635 had been sent to the Institutionfrom legacies. Life-boat Day continuedto make a substantial contribution, butthe amount received from Clyde-ownedsteamers showed a falling off, as com-pared with the previous year. It wasthe aim of the Committee to see everyClyde-owned vessel, in whatever partof the world she might be, making anannual contribution from officers andcrew. In moving the adoption of thereport the Chairman said he had alwaysthought that Glasgow did not doenough for the Institution, and he hopedthat its contribution would be increased.In particular, the amounts collected onboard ships were very inadequate, and,so far as his own ships were concerned,he promised that better things wouldbe done next year.

GLOUCESTER, GLOUCESTERSHIRE.—On 1st June, Mrs. Richard Daviespresiding. The report for the year end-ing 30th September, 1925, showed that£130 had been collected, as comparedwith £209 in the previous year. Mrs.Davies made an appeal for helpers onthe Life-boat Day in September.

ROTHEEHAM, YORKSHIRE.—On 17thJune, the Mayor, Alderman R. Dewar,presiding, supported by the Mayoress.The report for the year ending 30thSeptember, 1925, showed that £211 hadbsen collected, as compared with £147in the previous year. The Mayor saidthat although Rotherham was an inlandtown the Institution had a claim on itssupport. He hoped that its contribu-tions would be maintained, and whenthe industrial troubles were over wouldbe increased.

MORECAMBE, LANCASHIRE.—On 21stJuly, Captain C. Blakey, the HonoraryTreasurer, presiding, supported by theMayor and Mayoress, Presidents of theBranch. The Mayor, in seconding avote of thanks to the workers, said thathe had had the impression that theadministrative expenses of the Institu-tion were far greater than they shouldbe, but he was now convinced that thiswas not the case, and he wished toconfess that he had been wrong. Hehoped that the people of Morecambeand its visitors would give the Branchevery possible help, and authorized theissue of an appeal in his own name.

Special Meetings.

ST. ALBANS, HERTS.—A meeting washeld in the gardens of St. Peter's House,St. Albans, through the kindness of theMayor and Mayoress (Mr. and Mrs. E.W. Hitchcock) oa 27th May. TheMayor presided, supported by theCountess of Verulam, President of theSt. Albans Ladies' Life-boat Guild,Rear-Admiral T. P. H. Beamish, C.B.,R.N., M.P., a member of the Committee

of Management of the Institution, andMr. George F. Shee, M.A., Secretary ofthe Institution. An address on thework of the Service was given byAdmiral Beamish, and Mr. Shee paid atribute to the work done by the St.Albans Branch and its Honorary Secre-taries, Miss Silvester and Miss Toulmin.He appealed to the ladies of St. Albansto join the Ladies' Life-boat Guild.

FABEHAM, HANTS.—The meeting ofthe Fareham Brotherhood on 27th Junewas addressed by Captain Basil Hall,R.N., late District Inspector of Life-boats, in place of Sir Godfrey Baring,Bt., Chairman of the Committee ofManagement, who was prevented at thelast moment from attending. Mr. R. H.Glover, the organizer of the Life-boatDay in Fareham, handed Captain Halla cheque for the proceeds of the Day,and said that the amount collected byFareham was equal to Id. per head ofthe population.

TRURO, CORNWALL.—A special meet-ing was held on 13th July for the pur-pose of reorganizing this Branch. TheMayor (Mr. W. R. T. Stratford) pre-sided, and said that he thought noneshould understand better the need ofmaintaining the Life-boat Service thanthe people of the West Country, and thatthe many wrecks round their coastsgave the Institution a great claim ontheir support. He pointed out that thework of the Institution was done at avery small expense for management,and appealed to the meeting to makeTruro Life-boat Day a record. Anaddress was given by the DistrictOrganizing Secretary, and the questionof appointing a committee was discussed.

BANGOR, Co. DOWN.—A special meet-ing was held on 3rd September, withMr. S. Fagan, J.P. (Chairman, of theUrban District Council) in the chair,to hear an address from* Captain theHon. E. B. S. Bingham, V.C., O.B.E.,R.N., who won the Victoria Cross atthe Battle of Jutland. Captain Bing-ham made a special appeal for Ireland'ssupport of the Service to be increased,so as to equal the cost of the mainten-ance of the Irish Life-boats. He saidhe was sure that no Irishman would like

to feel that other parts of the BritishIsles had to contribute money for thesupport of the Irish Life-boat Stations.Bangor had contributed regularly formany years past, but its average of £60a year was not sufficient, in view of thelarger expenditure incurred by replacingPulling and Sailing Life-boats withpowerful Motor Life-boats. CaptainBingham went on to say: "I knowwhat it is to be thrown into an angrysea, and can sympathize with thepassengers and crews of vessels fightingstorms or wrecked in fog or disabled bymountainous seas. The officers and menof His Majesty's Navy (knowing some-thing of rough seas) show their practicalsympathy with this great work of theInstitution by regularly making a col-lection every year, to which, I ampleased to think, every man is deligbtedto contribute." Lady Clanmorris alsospoke, and made a special appeal to theladies of Bangor to give their help incarrying out Life-boat Day.

NEWBIGGIN, NORTHUMBERLAND.—On22nd September a special meetingwas held, at wbicb Captain E. S. Carver.R.D., R.N.R., Inspector of Life-boats,presented the Bronze Medal and framedVellum of Thanks awarded to CoxswainWilliam Robinson for the service to thesteam trawler George B. Purdy on 28thApril, described elsewhere in this issue.Canon Rhodes, of Newbiggin, presided.Mr. Hindmarcb, the Honorary Secre-tary of the Station, described the service,and said that since the NewbigginStation was established in 1851 its Life-boats had rescued 450 lives. They hadbeen out on service 186 times, and ofthese launches 130 have been to theirown fishing boats. After CaptainCarver had made the presentation,Coxswain Robinson was called upon fora speech. He said he had never made aspeech before in his 'ife, and that heand his crew only did tnat day what theyhad always done and always would do.

TRALEE, Co. KERRY.—A special meet-ing, summoned by Miss Eleanor Mc-Cowen, was held on 22nd September forthe purpose of extending the work ofthe Guild. The McGillycuddy of TheReeks presided, and pointed out that

there were a number of dangerouspoints round their coast. The Institu-tion had done splendid work in protect-ing life, and it was now for the people tohelp by their subscriptions. An addresson the work of the Life-boat Servicewas given by the District OrganizingSecretary.

New Branches and Guilds.

LURGAN, Co. CAVAN.—Mr. HerbertC. Malcolm, U.D.C., presided at ameeting which was held on 4th May forthe purpose of forming a Branch. Mr.Malcolm pointed out that the cost ofmaintaining the Life-boats on the Irishcoast, irrespective of the capital outlay,was far greater than the amount atpresent contributed by Ireland. TheInstitution was endeavouring to makeup the deficit by forming new Branches,and he was sure that the people ofLurgan, although it was an inland town,would realise their duty to help theService. A Committee was formed, andCommander Fforde, R.N. (ret.), waselected Honorary Secretary.

LISBURN, Co. ANTRIM.—A meetingwas held on 5th May for the purpose offorming a Branch, at which SenatorH. M. Barbour presided. He said thatany little sacrifice which they couldmake was as nothing compared to thegreat sacrifice made by the men whoman the Life-boats, and he was proud tothink that their Irish sailors had as finea record as those of Great Britain. Thecontributions to the Service in Irelandwere little more than half the cost ofmaintaining the Boats on the Irishcoast, and he hoped that this wouldsoon be remedied. The Very Rev. R. W.Hamilton proposed, and the very Rev.Canon O'Boyle, A.P., V.F., seconded, aresolution heartily approving the objectsof THE ROYAL NATIONAL LIFE-BOATINSTITUTION, and pledging the meetingto support the Lisburn Branch. SenatorBarbour was elected President, CaptainCooke, Honorary Treasurer, and Mrs.Adrian Robinson, Honorary Secretary.

KENDAL, WESTMORLAND.—A meet-ing was held on 15th June for thepurpose of forming a Ladies' Life-boatGuild to work with the Kendal Branch.

WATEEFOBD, Co. WATERFORD.—Ameeting was held on 15th June for thepurpose of forming a Waterford Branch,the Mayor (Alderman R. Keane) pre-siding. An address on the work of theLife-boat Service was given by theDistrict Organizing Secretary, and theMayor then said that it was for thepeople of Waterford to do everythingin their power to make the work of theWaterford Branch a real success. ACommittee was appointed, with theMayor as President, Mr. W. H. Carrollas Honorary Treasurer, and Mr. B. J.Farrell as Honorary Secretary. It wasalso decided that the Harbour Commis-sioners, the Chamber of Commerce, theI.T.G.W.U., the Amalgamated IrishTrade Unions and the Sailors' andFiremen's Union be asked to nominatea representative each to serve on theCommittee. It was also decided toask the Right Rev. Dr. Miller, of theChurch of Ireland, Bishop of Cashel,and the Most Rev. Dr. Hackett,Roman Catholic Bishop of Waterfordand Lismore, to give the Branch theirsupport.

CARNFOBTH, LANCASHIRE.—A meet-ing was held on 16th June, at which theChairman of the Urban District Councilpresided, for the purpose of forming aLadies' Life-boat Guild to take over thework of the former Branch. Mrs.Linnell was elected President, Mr. H. W.Baker, Honorary Treasurer, and Mrs.R. R. Stephens, Honorary Secretary, thePresident and Honorary Secretary beingelected to serve on the General Councilof the Guild. It was also decided tohold a Life-boat Day on 3rd July.

GREAT YARMOUTH, NORFOLK. — Ameeting was held on 22nd June for thepurpose of forming a Ladies' Life-boatGuild. The Mayor presided, supportedby Mr. A. H. Cartwright, Chairman of

the Gorleston Branch, and Mr. C. A.Cooper and Mr. A. D. Snell, theHonorary Secretaries at Great Yar-mouth and Gorleston. An address onthe work of the Guild was given by theDistrict Organizing Secretary, and theMayor proposed that a Guild should beformed. The proposal was unanimouslyadopted, all the ladies present enrollingthemselves as members. The Mayoresswas elected President, Mrs. E. Leach,Chairman, and Mrs. T. W. Swinnell andMrs. C. A. Cooper, Joint HonorarySecretaries. The newly-formed Guildcarried out a Life-boat Day on llthAugust, the day of the Naming Cere-mony of the new Motor Life-boat, and,as reported elsewhere, raised £225, inspite of bad weather, as compared with£96 last year.

SOWERBY BRIDGE, YOBKS.—A meet-ing was held on 2nd July, at whichCouncillor J. W. Whiteley, J.P., pre-sided. A proposal was unanimouslycarried in favour of forming a Guild,and all the ladies present were enrolledas members, Councillor Whiteley beingelected President, Mr. P. Cowling,Treasurer, and Miss S. Whiteley, Secre-tary.

HUDDERSFIELD, YORKSHIRE. — A| meeting was held on 9th July, at thei invitation of the Mayor and Mayoress,, Alderman and Mrs. Law Taylor, for thepurpose of forming a Guild to work withthe Huddersfield Branch. After the

DBIFFJELD, YOKKS.—A meeting washeld on 28th July, by invitation of Mrs.T. A. Good, to hear an address on thework of the Ladies' Life-boat Guild bythe District Organizing Secretary. Itwas unanimously decided to form alocal Guild. Mrs. Good was electedPresident, Mrs. Linsley, Vice-President,Mrs. W. Jordan, Honorary Treasurer,and Mrs. W. Blakeston and Mrs. E.Clements, Joint Honorary Secretaries.Guild Badges were distributed, and itwas decided to arrange social gatheringswith a view to raising funds.

COLNE, LANCASHIRE. — On 31stAugust a meeting was held, at theinvitation of the Mayor and Mayoress(Councillor and Mrs. Hird), for thepurpose of forming a Guild to work withthe Branch. The Mayor presided, sup-ported by Mr. E. W. Folley, Hono-rary Secretary, and Mr. G. L. Ayre,Honorary Treasurer, of the Branch. Hesaid that in these difficult times it wasimportant to concentrate on thosethings that really mattered, amongwhich were the great humanitarian ser-vices, such as the Life-boat Institution.After an address had been given on thework of the Guild by the DistrictOrganizing Secretary, it was unani-mously decided to form a Guild, and theladies present were elected to the Com-mittee, with the Mayoress as President,and Miss Robinson and Miss Earnshawas Honorary Secretaries.

BOLTON, LANCASHIRE.—A meetingwas held on 16th September, at whichthe Mayor, Councillor P. Knott, J.P.,presided, for the purpose of forming aLadies' Life-boat Guild to fork withthe Branch. An address on the Guild

was given by the District OrganizingSecretary, and the Mayoress moved aresolution forming the Guild. She saidthat she understood that £500 was thesum which Bolton might be expected tocontribute, but that last year it collectedonly £180. She believed that Boltonwomen would materially increase thisamount. The Mayoress was electedPresident, and Mrs, John Haslam,Honorary Secretary. Mr. H. Ormsort-Dixon, Honorary Secretary of theBranch, pointed out that in manyplaces Guilds were raising large sums—over £1,600 in Liverpool last year,nearly £800 in Manchester, and over£400 at Southport.

Life-boat Services.

HASTINGS, SUSSEX.—The Rogationceremony of Blessing the Sea was heldon 12th May. After a short preliminaryservice in the Fishermen's Church, aprocession of the clergy, choir andcongregation walked to the beach, therejoining a procession from All Saints'Church, and the service was conductedfrom the Life-boat, an address beinggiven by the Rev. Everard Digby, ofSt. Agatha's, Finsbury. A collectionwas taken on behalf of the Life-boatService.

WOBTHING, SUSSEX.—The TriennialLife-boat Sunday was held at Worthingon 13th June, Life-boat sermons beingpreached and a Life-boat collection beingmade at the different churches. . TheCrew of the Worthing Life-boat, accom-panied by the Chairman, Colonel A. F.Randolph, C.M.G., the Honorary Secre-tary, Mr. J. R. Aldridge, and membersof the Committee, attended the morningservice at Christ Church, where theVicar, the Rev. H. G. Edmonds,preached on the work of the Servicefrom the text " So He biingeththem unto their desired haven." Thelessons were read by Colonel Randolph,and were specially chosen for theService, being the account of Jonah'sflight to Tarshish, and St. Paul'sshipwreck at Melita.

POET EEIN, ISLE OF MAN.—An open-air Life-boat service was held on 27thJane, at which an address was delivered

by the Rt, Rev. the Lord Bishop of jSodor and Man, supported by clergy-men of different denominations. Thosewho took part in the service and in theprocession which preceded it includedthe Life-boat Crew and helpers, theTown Commissioners, Girl Guides, andthe Sunday Schools.

PEEL, ISLE OF MAN.—Life-boat Sun-',day was held on 18th July, the service \taking place in the Parish Church iinstead of the Castle Grounds, as theweather was bad. The procession,headed by the Church Band, includedthe Peel Life-boat Crew, Boy Scouts,Girl Guides, representatives of theNonconformist Churches, and membersof the Salvation Army. The lesson wasread by a woman officer of the SalvationArmy, and the Vicar of St. Clare's,Ramsey, preached. After the serviceMr. Edgar Johnson, District OrganizingSecretary, delivered an address in thechurchyard in memory of the Institu-tion's founder, Sir William Hillary, ofDouglas, Isle of Man, and presented toMr. George Sayle, Honorary Secretaryof the Peel Station, the Binocularsawarded him by the Institution inrecognition of his services for over tenyears.

WALTON - ON - THE - NAZE, ESSEX.—The Annual Life-boat Procession andService took place on Sunday, 1stAugust. The procession, headed by theThorpe Brass Band, included the Life-boat Crew, the Coast Guard, the FireBrigade, Boy Scouts, the Boys' Brigade,members of the British Legion, theBrotherhood, the Royal and AncientOrder of Buffaloes, and the AncientOrder of Foresters. Among thosepresent were several members of theCouncil, including the Chairman, Mr.C. F. J. Barker. The service was con-ducted from the Life-boat by the Rev.Arthur Lamb (Congregationalist), sup-ported by the Rev. J. Hayes (Church ofEngland), Mr. W. H. Weller (Presidentof the Brotherhood), and the Rev. G.Southgate (Baptist). A collection wasmade for the Life-boat Service.

CLACTON - ON - SEA, ESSEX.—Life-boat Sunday was held on 15th August.The procession through the town was

headed by the Boarding Boat withmembers of the Crew on board, andincluded the Band of the Clacton Boys'Brigade, members of the Fire Brigade,and the Friendly Societies. The serviceitself was conducted by the Rev. W.Timms, President of the Clacton andDistrict Evangelical Free ChurchCouncil, and the address was given bythe Rev. A. H. Morris, Vicar of GreatClacton. The singing was led by thechoir of St. James's Church, accompaniedby the band of the 1st Clacton BoyScouts. Among those present were theOfficers and Committee of the Branch.

ILFRACOMBE, N. DEVON.—A specialopen-air service was conducted from theLife-boat on 15th August by the Vicar,the Rev. I. Sinter. The Life-boat wasdressed with flags, and the Crew werepresent. The Rev. E. W. Perry readthe prayers, and the Vicar preached toa very large congregation standinground the Boat and in the windows ofthe neighbouring houses. The collectionfor the Life-boat Service amounted toabout £35.

HOYLAKE, LANCASHIRE.—Life-boatSunday was held on 12th September,the Life-boat Crew heading the proces-sion to St. Hildeburgh, which includedthe Coast Guard and members of theLife-boat Committee. The Rev. EricSouthwell conducted the service, andthe sermon was preached by a formerVicar of Hoylake, the Ven. ArchdeaconPaige Cox.

Balls, Fates and Bazaars.

5 SALISBURY, WILTSHIRE.—A Life-boatFete was held in the grounds of theBishop's Palace on Whit-Monday, 24thMay. The Fete was opened by theDuchess of Hamilton, who was accom-panied by the Duke. Brig. -General J. E.Vanrenen, one of the Joint HonorarySecretaries, presided, supported byMajor-General Sir Henry Everett,Colonel Sir Sydney Crookshank, LadyGodley and Major Rawlence, D.S.O.(Joint Honorary Secretary). GeneralVanrenen, in introducing the Duchess,said that the Salisbury and DistrictBranch contributed mo're than anyother Financial Branch of the same size

in the whole kingdom. The Duchess ofHamilton, in opening the Fete, saidthat the spirit of self-sacrifice of theLife-boat Service was the spirit whichalone could save the nation. Therewere many stalls and competitions.Displays were given by a contingent ofcadets from H.M.S. Excellent, at Ports-mouth, including a demonstration ofrescue from shipwreck by means of abreeches buoy ; and music was providedby the band of the 1st Battalion Princeof Wales' Volunteers (South Lancashire)and by the Salisbury British LegionBand, conducted by Mr. E. W. Coleman.The F£te concluded with a dance.Among those who helped were BoyScouts, Girl Guides, and members ofToe H, the Post-War Brotherhood andthe British Legion. Over 7,000 peoplewere present, and the proceeds of theF£te amounted to £530.

BRIGHTON, SUSSEX.—On 28th Maythe Sussex Motor Yacht Club and theWindlesham Club entertained theBrighton Life-boat Crew. There was amusical programme, and each memberof the Crew received a gift.

NEWBURGH, ABEBDEENSHIRE.—Thesum of £30 was raised by a Fancy DressCarnival organized by Miss Ritchie andMr, James Innes, Bowman of the Life-boat, which was held in June.

LICHFIELD, STAFFORDSHIRE. — AGarden Party was held in the groundsof the Bishop's Palace on 23rd June.Mrs. Kemptnorne, President of theBranch, presided, and the Garden Partywas opened by Captain Basil Hall, R,.N.,late District Inspector of Life-boats,accompanied by the District OrganizingSecretary. Tie arrangements weremade by Mrs. Ashpole, Honorary Secre-tary of the Branch, and the Women'sInstitute, and the programme includedfolk dancing, a whist drive and a dance.

LYMM AND HEATLEY, LANCASHIRE.—A Life-boat Fete organized by theLadies' Life-boat Guild was held on24th July, in the grounds of Oughtring-ton Hall, and proved a success, in spiteof heavy and continuous rain. TheFete was opened by Sir William Milligan,Chairman of the Manchester Branchand a Vice-President of the Institution.

Mr. Alfred Watkin presided. In intro-ducing Sir William Milligan, Mi. Watkuisaid that the ocean-going vessels whichthey saw passing along the Ship Canal,battered by storms, should bring hometo them in a very real sense the necessityfor a Life-boat Service. Sir WilliamMilligan spoke of the great develop-ments now being made in the Service,and of the latest types of MotorLife-boat.

JOHNSHAVEN, KlNCARDINESHIRE.—•On 25th July a Fancy Dress Parade washeld. After the procession had marchedthrough the streets collecting, theprizes were distributed, and the Life-boat was launched for its quarterlyexercise. The day concluded with adance.

EPPING, ESSEX.—A Garden Partywas held on 28th July in the grounds ofColonel and Mrs. Wall, which werespecially decorated. The SilvertoneBand played, and an address was givenby the District Organizing Secretary forGreater London.

WALTON - ON - THE - NAZE, ESSEX. —The Life-boat Saturday F&te was heldon 14th August, organized, as usual, byMr. J. F. Graham, the Honorary Secre-tary of the Branch. In the morningthere was a procession through thetown of decorated cars, for whichprizes were given. In the afternoon alarge crowd gathered to see the watersports. The Fete raised over £220.

KEIGHLEY, YORKSHIRE.—A GardenMeeting and American Sale was arrangedby the Ladies' Life-boat Guild. It washeld in the grounds of the Mayor andMayoress (Alderman and Mrs. ArthurSmith), and the Mayor presided. Mrs.Percy Clough was elected Chairman ofthe Guild, and Miss M. A. Clough aVice-President.

ST. DAVIDS, PEMBROKESHIRE.—TheAnnual Fete and Carnival was held on27th August, arranged by Mr. JosephSoar and Miss Perkins. It was openedby Mrs. Owen, wife of the Bishop of St.Davids, who said how difficult it wasfor the crowds of visitors who cameyear after year to the Pembrokeshirecoast in the summer to realize howchanged that coast was in the winter
