Greater than the sum of its partsGo big or go home. Living large. On the shoulders of giants. As these idioms suggest, grandeur plays a prominent role in the human psyche. Soaring architecture, vast oceans, and the unending night sky keep us fascinated for hours, weeks, and months at a time. Mountain ranges, forests, and gorges leave us speechless, yet inspired. I’m as fascinated by all these things as anyone else is but, like most beaders, I also have a penchant for those things at the other end of the scale. In fact, when I took up beading, my mother was not surprised. “It makes sense,” she reflected. “You’ve always liked small things.” And I do! I love to get lost in the intricate textures and details of a beaded collar, admire the forethought that goes into creating a beaded sculpture, or analyze how tiny seed beads come together to form something that is “greater than the sum of its parts.” I imagine that you are similarly inclined, seeing as you are reading this, and am heartened knowing there are so many others for whom an appreciation of this vast world involves marveling at the minutia within it. 8 mm Candy bead

4 mm Es-O Mini bead

80 seed bead

100 seed bead, color A

100 seed bead, bead B

110 seed bead

February 2018 4

BRACELET BANDS1) First unit: On 1 yd. (.9 m) of thread, pick up an Es-O Mini bead and three 110 seed beads. Leaving a 9-in. (23 cm) tail, sew through the open hole of the Es-O Mini (figure 1, a–b). Pick up three 110s, and sew through the other hole of the Es-O Mini (b–c) and the first three 110s picked up (c–d).2) Pick up an 110, an 80 seed bead, and an 110, skip the Es-O Mini, and sew through the next three 110s (figure 2, a–b). Repeat this stitch once (b–c), and sew through the nearest hole of the Es-O Mini, the adjacent three 110s, the other hole of the Es-O Mini, and the next two 110s (c–d).3) Create a connector in right-angle weave: Pick up a color A 100 seed bead, an 110, and an A, and sew through the 110 your thread exited at the start of this step. Sew through the next A and 110 (d–e).4) Second unit: Pick up an 110, an Es-O Mini, and three 110s, and sew through the open hole of the same Es-O Mini (figure 3, a–b). Pick up an 110, and sew through the next two 110s, the Es-O Mini, and the following three 110s (b–c).5) Pick up an 110, an 80, and an 110, and sew through the adjacent three 110s (c–d). Pick up an 110, an 80, and an 110, and sew through the following two 110s (d–e).6) Repeat step 3 to add another connector.7) Repeat steps 4–6 12 times. Repeat steps 4–5 once more to create the last (15th) unit for a 6½-in. (16.5 cm) bracelet (figure 4). For a longer or shorter bracelet, make sure to end with an

odd number of units in order to maintain the design. 8) Repeat steps 1–7 to create a second bracelet band. End the working thread and tail.

CANDY BEAD COMPONENTSCircular brick stitch is used to frame the two-hole Candy beads. Due to its second hole, you will have to create four loops versus the standard two. Each two-hole Candy bead has a rounded face and a flat base. The edges where the two holes are close together will be referred to as the top and bottom of the beads.1) On 18 in. (46 cm) of thread, pick up an 8 mm Candy bead, and sew through the same hole again, leaving an 8-in. (20 cm) tail (figure 5,

a–b). This creates a thread bridge around the side that will be used for framing the Candy bead in brick stitch. Sew down through the open hole of the Candy bead to create a top thread bridge (b–c). Sew through the same hole again to create a side thread bridge on the other side (c–d). Sew up through the other hole to create the bottom thread bridge (d–e).2) Pick up two 110s, and sew under the thread bridge at the top of the Candy bead. Sew back through the second 110 picked up, and tighten

(figure 6).3) Work 12 more circular brick stitches around the Candy bead to complete the round, picking up one 110 at a time (figure 7, a–b). There should be 14 110s framing the Candy bead. After completing the 14th stitch, sew down through the first 110, out towards the back,

Cleopatra was the inspiration for this bracelet. The palette represents the bold personality of this infamous Egyptian queen, and the design is my interpretation of what she might wear.

under the thread bridge below the first 110, and up through the first 110 (b–c). Set this component aside. Do not trim the threads.4) Repeat steps 1–3 to frame seven Candy beads. If you adjusted the length of your bracelet bands, subtract one from the number of units in each band and divide that number by two to determine how many Candy beads you will need.

ASSEMBLY1) With the working thread exiting out the top of an 110 on a Candy bead component, pick up an A, and sew through the bottom 80 of the second unit of a bracelet band (figure 8, a–b). Pick up an A, and sew down through the next 110 surrounding the Candy bead (b–c). Sew back up through the 110 your thread exited at the start of this step, and retrace the thread path (c–d). (Make sure the rounded face of the Candy bead is facing up.) Do not end the threads.2) Repeat step 1 six times with the other Candy bead components, attaching them to every other unit (even units) of the top bracelet band.3) With the tail of the first Candy bead compo-nent, exit the bottom of the 110 opposite the top connection. (There should be five unattached 110s on each side of the Candy bead.) Work as in step 1 to attach the bottom of the Candy bead to the corresponding unit on the other bracelet band (e–f).4) Attach the remaining Candy bead compo-nents to the bottom bracelet band.5) With the working thread of the first Candy bead component, sew through the beadwork so the thread exits the second 110 away from the previous connection (figure 9, a–b).

tip If you need to change direction when sewing through the brick-stitched 110s around the Candy beads, just sew under a thread bridge to catch the thread, and reverse direction.Pick up five 110s, and sew through the adjacent 80 on the next unit of the bracelet band (b–c). Pick up five 110s, and sew through the second 110 below the attachment to the next Candy bead (c–d). Sew through the next two 110s as shown (d–e), pick up five 110s, and sew through the corresponding 80 on the bottom bracelet band (e–f). Pick up five 110s, and sew through the second 110 above the bottom attachment of the adjacent Candy bead (f–g). End this thread.6) Repeat step 5 to add webbing between the remaining Candy bead units. 7) To attach the last Candy bead unit, sew through the beadwork to exit the second 110 below the top connection (h–i). Pick up five 110s, sew through the 80 on the last unit of the top bracelet band (i–j), and end this thread. Use the tail to attach this Candy bead to the bottom band in the same way (j–k), and end the tail.

OUTER EDGING1) On 7 ft. (2.1 m) of thread, center two 110s and two 100 As. (The tail will be used to complete the second half of the bracelet band.) Sew through all four beads again to create a two-by-two square, and then sew through the two 110s again

(figure 10, a–b). Wrap the tail onto a thread bobbin or piece of cardboard to keep it out of the way for now.2) Pick up an 110 and an A, and sew down through the previous A and up through the adjacent 110 and the new 110 (b–c). Repeat this stitch to create a strip with a total of 20 110s and As. This will become part of the “loop” end of the bracelet (c–d).

FIGURE 8 FIGURE 9

FIGURE 10

3) To make a corner, pick up an 110 and three As, and sew down through the previous A and up through the adjacent 110 and new 110 (d–e).4) Working as in step 2, work five more stitches with an 110 and an A (e–f).5) To connect the edging strip to the bracelet, sew through the 80 at the top end unit. Pick up an 110, and sew through the previous A and 110, and continue through the same 80 (f–g). Work four more stitches using an 110 and an A.6) Work as in step 5 to the end of the bracelet.7) After you have exited the 80 of the last unit, work five more stitches with an 110 and an A, make a corner as in step 3, and work eight more stitches with an 110 and an A.8) Attach a needle to the tail, and work steps 3–7 to complete the other outer edging band.

CLASP1) Toggle bar: On 1 yd. (.9 m) of thread, attach a stop bead, leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail. Pick up 20 110s. These beads will shift to form rows 1 and 2 as the next row is added. Using 110s, work a total of 10 rows of flat even-count peyote stitch. Zip up the edges to form a tube that will become the toggle bar.2) To embellish the ends of the toggle bar, the thread should be exiting an end bead. Pick up an Es-O Mini and three color B 100 seed beads. Sew through the open hole of the Es-O Mini and an end 110 opposite the one your thread was exit-ing. Sew up through the next 110 and retrace the thread path through the beads added in this step.3) Repeat step 2 on the other end of the toggle bar. End the working thread and tail.4) Toggle bar attachment strip: On 18 in. (46 cm) of thread and leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail, pick up four 110s. Pick up one 110, and sew through the last bead of the previous row and the first bead of the current row in the same direction. Continue working in square stitch to create a strip that is 25 rows long by four beads wide. End the tail.5) Place the bar attachment strip within the open end of the bracelet. With the working thread of the bar attachment strip exiting the top of the first row, sew up through the fourth and fifth 110s of the last/top five webbing beads, and sew through the nearest 80 (figure 11, a–b). Sew back down through the fifth and fourth 110s of the webbing, and through the end four beads of the square stitch strip (b–c). Sew down through the fourth and fifth 110s of the bottom webbing, and continue through the nearest 80 (c–d).

Sew up through the fifth and fourth 110s of the webbing (d–e). For added strength, retrace thread path through this entire connection, and end the working thread.6) With the tail from the top edging strip , sew through the fifth row of the square stitch strip, and continue through the end two 110s of the bottom edging strip. Sew back through the adja-cent two As, the sixth row of the square stitch strip, and the end two As of the top strip (f–g). Retrace thread path, and end the tail.7) With the tail from the bottom outer edging band strip, sew through the beadwork to exit the end of the bar attachment strip. Wrap the strip around the center of the toggle bar, and follow-ing the square stitch thread path, sew the end to the 11th row of the strip. To keep the bar from slipping out, sew through the bar and the strip a few times until secure. End the thread.

FINISHING TOUCHES1) With the tail of the top bracelet band at the closed (loop) end, sew through the beadwork to exit the center 110 of the end unit (figure 12,

point a). Pick up three 110s, and sew through the corner 110 (sixth 110 to the left of the end top 80), back through the three 110s just picked up, and down through the starting 110 (a–b). 2) Pick up two 110s, skip the next three 110s of the edging, and sew down through the next four 110s (b–c). 3) Pick up five 110s, and sew through the end bottom 80 of the top bracelet band (c–d).4) Pick up five 110s, and sew through the second 110 away from the connection between

the adjacent Candy bead and the top bracelet band (d–e). Sew through the next two 110s as shown (e–f).5) Pick up five 110s, and sew through the top 80 and the following three 110s of the last unit of the bottom bracelet band (f–g).6) Pick up three 110s, sew through the corner 110 in the edging, and sew back through the three 110s just picked up and the 110 your thread exited at the start of this step (g–h). 7) Pick up two 110s, skip the next three 110s in the edging, and sew up through the next four 110s (h–i).8) Pick up five 110s, and sew through the 80 of the last unit of the bottom bracelet band (i–j). End the thread. B&B

3) When the band is complete, add the edging: Add a new thread to the beadwork, and exit an end bead on one edge. Pick up three 150 seed beads, and sew down through the next edge bead and up through the following one. Repeat this stitch along the length of the band. When you reach the end, sew through to the other edge and repeat the embellishment.

4) Create the clasp: At one end of the band, sew through the beadwork to exit the down- bead nearest the center of the end row, with the needle pointing toward the adjacent down-bead. Pick up an A, and sew through the adjacent up-bead in the end row (figure, a–b). Pick up an A, and sew back through the A added in the previ-ous stitch (b–c). Repeat this last stitch five times to create a two-bead wide strip (c–d). Pick up 12 As and the clasp button, and sew through the end up-bead in the strip (d–e). Retrace the thread path a few times to secure the button, and end the thread.5) Attach a 12-in. (30 cm) thread at the other end of the band, and exit the set of three end up-beads at the center of the band, with your needle pointing toward the closest edge. Pick up 28 As, and make a loop by sewing through the center three down-beads and the following three center up-beads at the end of the band. 6) Sew through the first bead picked up in step 5, and then work 13 peyote stitches around the loop you made in step 5. Retrace the thread path through the button loop, and end the thread. B&B

The two-hole cabochon beads have two different sides. The top is rounded, and the back is flat.

1) On 1 yd. (.9 m) of thread, pick up four 80 seed beads. Leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail, sew through the beads again, and tie them into a ring with a square knot (figure 1, a–b). Pick up an 80, and sew through the next 80 (b–c). Repeat this stitch three times (c–d), and sew through the first 80 added in this round (d–e).2) Pick up an O-bead, a two-hole cabochon (with the top face up), and an O-bead. 8 x 5 mmDiamonDuo bead

80 seed bead, color A

80 seed bead, color B

110 seed bead

February 2018 15

The two-hole DiamonDuo beads have two dis-tinct sides: the top is faceted, and the back is flat. The figures show which hole to sew through, and in which direction, for each stitch.

tip Check all two-hole beads to be sure that both holes are unplugged.

BASE1) On a comfortable length of thread, pick up a color A 80 seed bead, a color B 80 seed bead, an A, and a B, leaving a 12-in. (30 cm) tail. Sew through the first three beads again to form a tight ring (figure 1, a–b). Retrace the thread path through the ring to exit the second A (not shown in the figure for clarity). This is one right-angle weave (RAW) stitch.2) Pick up a DiamonDuo bead, an A, and a B, and sew through the A your thread exited

in the previous stitch. Continue through the DiamonDuo and the new A (b–c). Retrace the thread path, exiting the same A (not shown in the figure for clarity).3) Pick up a B, an A, and a B, and sew through the A your thread exited in the previous stitch. Continue through the first B and A added in this step (c–d). Retrace the thread path, exiting the same A (not shown in the figure for clarity). 4) Ending and adding thread as needed, repeat steps 2–3 to reach the desired length, and make sure to end the bracelet with a stitch containing 80s only. A 7½-in. (19.1 cm) bracelet will need 41 RAW stitches.5) Work a second row of RAW, using only Bs for each stitch (figure 2).6) Work a third row to mirror the first row: work a stitch with an A, a B, and an A (figure 3,

a–b). Then alternate a stitch using an A and a

DiamonDuo (b–c) with a stitch using a B and an A (c–d) to the end of the row. Sew through the beadwork until your thread is exiting the last B of the third row and is pointing towards the adjacent DiamonDuo (figure 4, point a).

EMBELLISHMENT1) Pick up two 110 seed beads, a DiamonDuo, and two 110s, and sew through the B your thread exited at the beginning of this step (figure 4,

a–b). This DiamondDuo should be oriented with the faceted side up when it is positioned over the center of the band.

note The tension you use when adding the embellishment can make a big difference in this project. The tighter your tension as you embellish, the more the bracelet will ruffle.

2) Pick up three 110s, and sew through the open hole of the next DiamonDuo in row 3 (b–c). Pick up three 110s, and sew through the next B in row 3 (c–d).3) Repeat steps 1–2 for the length of the bracelet, ending with step 1.4) Sew through the beadwork to exit the end B on the other edge, with your needle pointing toward the adjacent DiamondDuo (figure 5). (The end DiamonDuo in the center row is not shown in figure 5 so the thread path can be shown more clearly.)5) Pick up two 110s, and sew through the open hole of the adjacent center-row DiamonDuo (figure 6, a–b). Pick up two 110s, and sew through the B your thread exited at the start of this step (b–c). 6) Pick up three 110s, and sew through the open hole of the next DiamonDuo on this edge (c–d).

Pick up three 110s, and sew through the next B on this edge (d–e).7) Repeat steps 5–6 for the remaining length.

CLASP1) Match up the loops of the 2-strand tube clasp to the two As at one end of the bracelet. Sew through the beadwork until your thread is exiting one of the end As. Pick up an 110, a loop of the clasp, and an 110, and sew through the end B (figure 7, a–b). Pick up an 110, the other loop of the clasp, and an 110, and sew through the other end A (b–c). Retrace the thread path through the clasp connection a couple of times, and end the thread.2) Using the tail, repeat step 1 on the other end of the bracelet.

SINGLE-STRAND CLASP OPTION 1) Sew through the beadwork until your thread is exiting an A at one end of the bracelet. Pick up four Bs, and sew through half of the clasp

(figure 8, a–b). Sew back through the last B picked up, pick up three Bs, and sew through the next end A (b–c). Retrace the thread path several times, and end the thread.2) Repeat step 1 on the other end of the bracelet with the tail. B&B
