Public health is defined as the science of bettering the health of people and their surrounding communities. This can range from small neighbourhoods to entire countries. The main elements of public health are communication, surveillance, epidemics, disease prevention, analysis, risk, research and health promotion. Professionals in public health strive to research disease and injury prevention, detect and prevent infectious diseases, and promote healthy lifestyles.

Academic PathwayIn Malaysia, Public Health programmes are usually offered at postgraduate level. Individuals can enrol in the many Masters in Public Health programmes available today. A full-time Masters in Public Health programme takes a minimum of one year to complete. Part-time programmes can be completed in two to six years depending on the individual. This programme aims to expand the knowledge of public health and impart skills that will allow individuals to contribute in academic institutions, health services, medical facilities and research.

Generally, Masters in Public Health students will learn about a variety of topics such as emergency medicine, disaster management, community health, anthropology, and sociology of health and illness. Some of the subjects to expect in the programme are Introduction to Public Health, Introduction to Biostatistics, Principles of Epidemiology, Family Health, Occupational and Environmental Health and Healthcare Management. Students will also learn about Research Methodology, International Health Legislation, Sustainable Development and Urban Health, Disaster Response and Management, Health Security, Climate Change and Health, Risk Assessment and Management, Healthcare Financing and Universal Health Coverage.

Public health is a good area to pursue for individuals already working in medical professions such as doctors, nurses, paramedics, bio-technologists, biomedical personnel, hygienists, environmental engineers, safety and health officers as well as other allied health professionals. Jobs have been lost, companies have closed, people are working from home and the overall global economy suffered. Online learning has become the norm as students and educators rushed to adapt to a new way of teaching and learning. Although schools are slowly reopening and classes are resuming, students and graduates today face a future of volatility and uncertainty. What are some of the useful skills for students to help them navigate this difficult time?

AdaptabilityAdaptability is defined as the ability to adjust to new conditions and environments. Students today may have to rethink their higher education and career pathways. For example, studying abroad may not seem like a feasible option as many international borders remain closed. In addition, students have to be able to adapt to the new way of learning remotely

and digitally. The job market today has also become more competitive as many companies are more selective with the people they hire. Fresh graduates need to be comfortable in ever-evolving workplaces and be open to learning new skills. They also have to keep up with the latest industry news and be ready to face unforeseen challenges.

Tech-SavvinessThe Internet has been a lifesaver for many industries in the Covid-19 era. A number of companies have found ways to sustain their businesses digitally by exploring e-commerce, virtual events and webinars, among others. Emotional Intelligence Emotionally intelligent people have the ability to understand, manage and express their emotions in a healthy and positive way. Also known as emotional quotient (EQ), individuals with high EQ are increasingly sought after by employers today. This is because these people can communicate effectively and empathise with others to find solutions and solve conflicts.

As change can bring about a lot of stress, having employees with high EQ is comforting during these challenging and uncertain times. It is common nowadays to read news about people losing jobs, getting pay cuts and going on unpaid leave. Therefore, the ability to remain calm, rational and practical during difficult times is a coveted trait by employers.

Critical thinkingIndividuals who can think critically are able to evaluate and analyse information to make well thought out decisions. They are able to

detach themselves from personal opinions and emotions when making decisions and drawing conclusions. In organisations, critical thinkers are needed to make informed choices about how to complete tasks, communicate information and relate with co-workers. Critical thinking is an important skill to hone in both the workplace and life in general. In the past few months, our screens have been bombarded with fake news, unverified information and misrepresentations of data that may have caused anxiety, fear and worry. Adaptability, tech-savviness, emotional intelligence and critical thinking are some useful skills that all students should develop. Aeronautical engineering concerns the science around the study, design, and manufacturing of flight-capable machines and operating aircrafts that are Earth-bound. It is a branch of engineering that is grouped under the primary field of aerospace engineering. Furthermore, it has many overlapping elements with astronautical engineering, which covers space-related matters such as space crafts and rocket propulsion.

What Do Aeronautical Engineers Do?

Generally, aeronautical engineers are responsible for designing, constructing, analysing and testing commercial or military aircrafts, missiles, and fighter planes. They also work on the production of aerospace equipment and satellites. In addition, aeronautical engineers research and create new technologies in commercial aviation and defence systems. There is a need for expertise in international relations especially in today’s globalised world to interpret complex interactions, promote understanding and craft policies and business solutions.

Academic PathwayAn International Relations undergraduate programme generally takes three years to complete. The programme aims to create job-ready graduates who are critical thinkers who have a global perspective. Examples of subjects taught in the first year are Modern Political Ideas, Philosophy, Life & Existence, Sustainable Lifestyles & Communities; and War, Peace & Cooperation. Students will then learn about Money, Trade & Development;
