The Amphiteatre of Cagliari is the most important public building of the Roman remains

in Sardinia.

The amphitheatre games took place in a wide levelled elliptical area, the “ARENA”.

The arena was probably built in the last decade of the I century AD

It is divided in 3 tiers as the social classes in the

Roman empire.

The arena has several corridors and other service areas connected to it.

The main entrance, used only by the high social classes, was the one we now use to get

into the botanical garden.

In the amphitheatre there is also a jail for the prisoners sentenced to death.

In the amphitheatre there are some remains of an altar, carved in the rock.

Another little altar is placed in a room which

was a funeral room.
