The bus, which departs from the Hotel at 08.30, will take us to the Melk Abbey or Stift Melk which is an Austrian Benedictine abbey, and one of the world's most famous monastic sites. It is located above the town of Melk on a rocky outcrop overlooking the river Danube in Lower Austria, adjoining the Wachau valley. The abbey was founded in 1089 when Leopold II, Margrave of Austria gave one of his castles to Benedictine monks from Lambach Abbey. A monastic school, the Stiftsgymnasium Melk, was founded in the 12th century, and the

m o n a s t i c l i b r a r y s o o n b e c a m e renowned for its extensive manuscript c o l l e c t i o n . T h e m o n a s t e r y ' s scriptorium was also a major site for the production of manuscripts. In the 15th century the abbey became the centre of the Melk Reform movement which reinvigorated the monastic life of Austria and Southern Germany. After lunch the bus will take a different route through small villages back to the Hotel where you will arrive at approximately 16.30.

The Ceramic Update in Esthetic DentistryDr. Markus B. Blatz, DMD, PhDDr. Markus B. Blatz is Professor of Restorative Dentistry and Chairman of the Department of Preventive and Restorative Sciences at University of Pennsylvania School Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He also is the founder of the UPenn SDM CAD/CAM Ceramic Centre. Dr. Blatz graduated from Albert-Ludwigs University in Freiburg, Germany, and was awarded an additional Doctorate Degree, a Postgraduate Certificate in Prosthodontics. He is also a Board-certified Diplomat in the German Society for Prosthodontics and Biomaterial's and a member of multiple other professional organisations, including the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, the American College of Prosthodontics, and O.K.U. Honor Dental Society. Dr. Blatz serves on the editorial boards of numerous recognised scientific dental journals and is former Associate Editor of Quintessence International and Quintessence of Dental Technology. He is the recipient of multiple teaching and research awards and has published and lectured extensively on dental esthetics, restorative materials, and implant dentistry. Lecture SynopsisExciting advancements in esthetic restorative dentistry, adhesion, implantology, all-ceramic materials, and CAD/CAM technology provide the restorative dentist with an array of wonderful tools to meet the challenges of this era of dentistry. Ceramic materials have become integral parts of esthetically driven restorative treatment concepts that include procedures ranging from conservative veneers to full-mouth rehabilitations. High-strength ceramic materials (i.e. zirconium-oxide ceramic) and CAD/CAM technologies are progressively applied for tooth- and implant-supported restorations.The physical properties of modern ceramic materials are significantly different from traditionally applied metal-alloys and, therefore, contrary to common claims, require significantly different handling and design. Advancements in adhesive dentistry have further expanded the range of clinical indications of modern ceramic materials and less invasive treatment protocols.Crucial aspects for successful integration of these technologies and materials are case selection, treatment planning, laboratory and clinical handling (preparation, cementation and resin bonding) that recognize their indications and limitations based on the current scientific evidence. This program will provide an update on dental esthetics, ceramics, adhesion, and CAD/CAM technology and discusses guidelines for long-term success with tooth- and implant-supported ceramic restorations.

Prognostic factors and predictability of Root Canal Treatment - an update of the evidence.Professor Kishor Gulabivala BDS, MSc, FDS RCS, PhD, FHEA.Professor Kishor Gulabivala is head of the Department of Restorative Dentistry and the Unit of Endodontology at UCL Eastman Dental Institute. He is a UK General Dental Council registered specialist in Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics and Endodontics. He holds the position of Consultant in Restorative Dentistry, as well as being the Training Programme Director for Restorative Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Hospital. He is also editor/co-author of Endodontics, Colour Atlas, 2004 (3rd Ed, Elsevier Science), the Textbook and Colour Atlas of Endodontics 1995 (2nd Ed, Mosby-Wolfe) and a contributor to Clinical Dental Medicine 2020 & the Self-Assessment manual on Endodontics 1995 (Mosby-Wolfe).

Lecture SynopsisA plethora of root canal preparation instruments and techniques now enable the specialist endodontist and even general dental practitioner to produce radiographically excellent results. True to the history of root canal treatment procedure development, the biological considerations have lagged behind in the practitioner consciousness. The developments in mechanical preparation of root canal systems has left notions of debridement some paces behind, with the result that rapid mechanical root canal preparation may leave root canal systems poorly debrided. At the opposite end of the spectrum, the aggressive use of rotary instruments may inflict undue stresses on teeth and coupled with aggressive chemical debridement and hot obturation, could potentially shorten survival times. The growing confidence of practitioners in preparing canals and filling them to radiographic gold standards, coupled with commercial pressures to maintain a viable practice may have driven such accomplished artisans to argue for the single visit approach. Yet, such skills in accomplished hands and minds may not be so easily transferred to every practicing endodontist or generalist. Precise description of a biologically optimal root canal treatment procedure remains a challenge.The purpose of this presentation is to reflect and take stock of the biological, clinical, technical, mechanical and chemical evidence to synthesise a coherent view of the known prognostic factors and advance a predictable protocol for periapical health and tooth survival.

The Timing of Implant PlacementDr. Barry D. Wagenberg, DMDDr. Wagenberg received his dental degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1971. He received a certificate in Periodontics from Columbia University in 1974 and served as a Major in the United States Air Force for two years. Dr. Wagenberg has authored one textbook, contributed a chapter in a textbook and authored thirty-two articles. He has served as program chairman for the American Academy of Periodontics and chairman of the Mucogingival and Augmentation Section of the World Workshop of Periodontics. Dr. Wagenberg is a Diplomat of the American Board of Periodontics and served 6 years as a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Academy of Periodontology. He is Director of Dental Education and Periodontics at Newark Beth Israel Medical Centre and an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at New York University School of Dentistry. Dr. Wagenberg is a fellow of the International and American College of Dentists, the American Academy of Oral Medicine, the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, the American Academy of Osseointegration and the American Academy of Periodontology. He has been in full time private practice in New Jersey since 1976.Lecture SynopsisA study of 1925 immediate implants placed at the time of extraction will be discussed. The success rates by area and effect of modifiers such as gender, smoking, medications and diseases will be presented. Preliminary results of a long term radiographic follow up will be discussed. A follow-up study with an evaluation period from 4-22 years of maintenance of bone after loading will be reported on 1187 implants from the original study. Immediate tooth replacement and immediate loading have the same requirements as immediate implant placement. There are however added steps and coordinated therapy necessary to make them successful. These will be presented by way of documented cases.Learning Objectives

1. The clinician will be able to determine when immediate placement into extraction sites is feasible.

2. Contraindications to immediate placement, tooth replacement and loading3. The clinician will be able to develop a protocol for successful placement of implants

Lars Sennerby is Professor in the Department of Oral & M a x i l l o f a c i a l S u r g e r y U n i v e r s i t y o f Gothenburg,Sweden. He graduated from the University of Gothenburg with a DDS degree in 1986. He was trained in oral surgery at the Brånemark Clinic in Gothenburg, where he worked part-time from 1989 to 2001. He defended his thesis for a PhD-degree in 1991, was appointed Associate professor in 1993 and became full professor at the Department of Biomaterial's, University of Gothenburg in 2000. Dr Sennerby is presently part-time professor at the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Gothenburg and performs implant surgery in private practice. He is co-Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research.

Lecture Synopsis

The severely resorbed edentulous posterior maxilla constitutes a challenge for the restorative team. The classic approach to this problem is to surgically enter the sinus through the lateral bone wall and to place autogenous bone grafts, bone substitutes or a mixture of the two in conjunction with or prior to implant placement. Research from our group has shown that the mere elevation of the sinus membrane and simultaneous placement of implants as tent poles for the membrane results in predictable and lasting bone formation in the maxillary sinus. The presentation will present the development of the technique, experimental results and clinical experiences with the technique over a ten-year period of time.

Professor Neil Meredith, BDS, MSc, FDS RCS, PhD, PhD

Neil Meredith qualified as a Bachelor in Dental Surgery at Guy’s hospital in 1983 and following a series of hospital appointments and a spell in practice enrolled on the MSc in Conservative Dentistry at the Eastman in London. Neil spent a number of years at the Eastman teaching and undertaking research, completing his PhD in 1992. As part of his research interest Neil co-invented the use of Resonance Frequency Analysis in the measurement of implant stability and outcome. A technique that has now become a widely recognised standard for the assessment of implant success and commercialised as a university spinout company, Osstell. Following a fellowship at the Brånemark clinic in Gothenburg, he completed his second PhD in this field. Neil has held academic appointments at the University of Bristol and Leeds and currently holds he Chair in Prosthodontics at the University of Queensland. Neil was also the cofounder of Neoss, the dental implant company and has been its CEO for over ten years.

Lecture Synopsis

It would appear that the world of prosthodontics has changed forever. Technology and new materials are being introduced at an alarming rate. Clinicians and technicians are being bombarded with claims, features and benefits for technological solutions which would suggest that the dentistry we have been practicing for the last thirty years is little more than prehistoric. The aim of this presentation is to draw a line in the sand and define those principles and parameters which define best clinical practice. We will then look at how ‘technology’ can stand scrutiny in this way.

Dr. Chee is a Fellow of the American College or Prosthodontists, Fellow of the American College of Dentists and a member of the American Academy of

It is sometimes difficult to obtain ideal esthetic outcomes when restoring missing anterior teeth with dental implants. This presentation will attempt to define the

parameters that are within the clinicians ability to impact the outcome and those which are not. A discussion of missing single teeth compared to missing multiple

anterior teeth will also be presented.

Dr. Eric Whaites, MSc, BDS, FDSRCS(Edin), FDSRCS(Eng), FRCR, DDRRCRDr. Whaites has been Head of the Department of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiological Imaging at King’s College London Dental Institute (based at Guy’s Hospital) since 1988. Former President of the British Society of Dental and MaxilloFacial Radiology BSDMFR) and the European Academy of Dental and MaxilloFacial Radiology (EADMFR). He is a Member of the Dental Radiology Examination Board of The Royal College of Radiologists and a National and International lecturer.

Dr. Whaites is the author of several publications including the textbooks Essentials of Dental Radiography and Radiology – now in its 4th Edition - and Radiography and Radiology for Dental Care Professionals 2nd Edition, both published by Elsevier.

Dr. Whaites is also Honorary Clinical Adviser to the Dental Defence Union in the UK.

Lecture Synopsis

The aim of this lecture to provide members of the Society with an interactive update course in dental radiological interpretation of radiolucent lesions at the apices of teeth and the construction of radiological differential diagnoses as well as a brief insight into some medico-legal radiological dilemmas.

1. Be familiar with the various factors that can affect radiological interpretation.

2. Be able to construct a radiological differential diagnosis of radiolucent (black) lesions in the tooth bearing portion of the jaws.

Wear of the natural dentition by dental materialsDr. Terence E. Donovan D.D.S.Dr. Terry Donovan received his D.D.S. from the University of Alberta in 1967, and practiced full time in Regina, Saskatchewan for 13 years. He received his Certificate in Advanced Prosthodontics from the University of Southern California in 1981. He was Professor and Director of the Advanced Education in Prosthodontics Program at USC from 1988 - 2006. He has been Associate Dean for General Practice and Executive Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of Southern California, as well as the Chairman of the Department of Restorative Dentistry from 1984 – 1991, and 1994-2001. He is currently Professor and Section Head of Biomaterial's in the Department of Operative Dentistry at the University of North Carolina, School of Dentistry at Chapel Hill. Dr. Donovan has published extensively, and has lectured world wide on the topics of restorative dentistry and materials science. He is past Chairman of the American Dental Association's Council on Dental Materials, Instruments, and Equipment.

Lecture SynopsisWear of the natural dentition by dental materials is a concern for the dental clinician. It is clear that some ceramic materials have the potential to abrade the natural dentition, yet all-ceramic crowns are being marketed aggressively by many laboratories and manufacturers. This presentation will discuss the quality of the evidence base regarding wear of enamel by restorative materials, and analyze what evidence is available. Specific suggestions will be made for use or different materials in 13.00 - specific clinical situations.

How Clinical Photography Will Change Your Aesthetic Prosthetic Concepts In The Long Time Perspective

Dr. Sverker Toreskog DDS, MSD, Odont.Dr. H.C.Dr. Toreskog received his D.D.S. in Stockholm in 1960 and M.S.D. Indiana University School of Dentistry 1964. He was made an Honorary Doctor by his “home town” Dental School in Göteborg in 2000 and Visiting Professor at Alas University, Lima, Peru in 2009. As a consequence of his Master Studies in the US he brought Metal Ceramics to Scandinavia in 1964 which “was aesthetics” in 1960 – 1985. Documenting all his cases photographically showed him, however, that gingival recession was frequent and his previous aesthetic metal/ceramic cases turned into cervical aesthetic disasters when the subgingival dark root surfaces were exposed. The veneer concept became the solution for him and his team in 1985 when it became possible to obtain invisible cervical margins with minimally invasive bonded porcelain techniques.

In 1991 he started to work interdisciplinary with Professor Björn Zachrisson as “his orthodontist” and the combination of Professor Björn Zachrisson’s sound, intelligent and very aesthetic orthodontic treatments followed by the super thin bonded porcelain technique that Dr. Toreskog and his team had acquired lead to very positive interdisciplinary restorative solutions. His International lecturing (since 1965) about his concept and the long time follow ups of these cases takes 1/3 of his active office time and the remaining 2/3 is devoted to clinical treatments.

Lecture Synopsis

Naturally, your final prosthetic restoration must be aesthetically OK or the patient would not accept it. However, as time goes by it will change and you will come to a point where you yourself wonder “did I really do this 10 years ago?” By constantly documenting your cases photographically, you will learn which techniques are good or bad in the long time perspective and you will start changing your clinical concepts accordingly. This lecture is all about the changes I have made in my prosthetic procedures during the last 45 years as a clinician, all based upon what I see in my clinical photos.
