THE AMAZING LIFE OF JESUS CHRISTJesus Christ is not merely an outstanding person who lived and died many years

ago. According to the Scriptures, He is God the Creator, who lived on earth as a manso that He might give His life-blood to rescue sinful mankind from the power of sinand Satan and death. He is alive today and gives eternal life to all who come to Him.

Accepting or rejecting Jesus Christ is a matter of life or death. "He who has theSon has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life (I John5:12). "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name underheaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).

JESUS EXISTED BEFORE HIS BIRTH 1In the beginning was the Word,

and the Word was with God, and theWord was God. He was in the begin-ning with God. All things were madethrough Him, and without Himnothing was made that was made.And the Word became flesh anddwelt among us, and we beheld Hisglory. —John 1:1-3, 14a

For by Him all things were created. . . . All things were created throughHim and for Him. And He is beforeall things . . . . —Colossians 1:16-17

God, who at various times and indifferent ways spoke in time past to

the fathers by the prophets, has inthese last days spoken to us by HisSon, whom He has appointed heir ofall things, through whom also Hemade the worlds. —Hebrews 1:1-2

Jesus said to them, “Most assured-ly, I say to you, before Abraham was,I AM.” —John 8:58

2 PROPHETS FORETOLD JESUS’ LIFE“Therefore the Lord Himself will

give you a sign: Behold, the virginshall conceive and bear a Son, andshall call His name Immanuel.”

—Isaiah 7:14

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,though you are little among thethousands of Judah, yet out of youshall come forth to Me the One to beruler in Israel, whose goings forthhave been from of old, from ever-lasting.” —Micah 5:2

For unto us a Child is born, untous a Son is given; and the govern-

ment will be upon His shoulder. AndHis name will be called Wonderful,Counselor, Mighty God, EverlastingFather, Prince of Peace. Of the in-crease of His government and peacethere will be no end. —Isaiah 9:6-7a

He is despised and rejected bymen, a Man of sorrows and ac-quainted with grief. Surely He hasborne our griefs and carried our sor-rows; yet we esteemed Him stricken,smitten by God, and afflicted. ButHe was wounded for our transgres-sions, He was bruised for our iniqui-ties. —Isaiah 53:3a, 4-5a

JESUS LEFT HEAVEN TO BECOME A MAN 3Christ Jesus, . . . being in the form

of God, did not consider it robberyto be equal with God, but madeHimself of no reputation, taking theform of a servant, and coming in thelikeness of men. And being found inappearance as a man, He humbledHimself and became obedient to thepoint of death, even the death of thecross. —Philippians 2:5b-8

Jesus said to them, “. . . I proceed-ed forth and came from God . . . . ”

Inasmuch then as the childrenhave partaken of flesh and blood, HeHimself likewise shared in the same,that through death He might destroyhim who had the power of death,that is, the devil, and release thosewho through fear of death were alltheir lifetime subject to bondage.

4 JESUS’ PURPOSE FOR COMING TO EARTH“For even the Son of Man did not

come to be served, but to serve, andto give His life a ransom for many.”

“For God did not send His Soninto the world to condemn the world,but that the world through Himmight be saved.” —John 3:17

Jesus answered, “. . . For thiscause I was born, and for this cause Ihave come into the world, that Ishould bear witness to the truth.

Everyone who is of the truth hearsMy voice.” —John 18:37b

Christ Jesus came into the worldto save sinners. . . .

JESUS WAS SUPERNATURALLY CONCEIVED 5The angel Gabriel was sent by

God to a city of Galilee named Naza-reth, to a virgin betrothed to a manwhose name was Joseph, of thehouse of David. The virgin’s namewas Mary. . . . Then the angel said toher, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for youhave found favor with God. And be-hold, you will conceive in your womband bring forth a Son, and shall callHis name JESUS. He will be great,and will be called the Son of theHighest; . . . and of His kingdomthere will be no end.” Then Marysaid to the angel, “How can this be,since I do not know a man?” And the

angel answered and said to her, “TheHoly Spirit will come upon you, andthe power of the Highest will over-shadow you; therefore, also, thatHoly One who is to be born will becalled the Son of God. . . . For withGod nothing will be impossible.”

6 THE BIRTH OF JESUS. . . A decree went out from Caesar

Augustus that all the world shouldbe registered. . . . So all went to beregistered, everyone to his own city.And Joseph also went [to Bethlehem]to be registered with Mary, hisbetrothed wife, who was with child.. . . And she brought forth her first-born Son, and wrapped Him inswaddling cloths, and laid Him in amanger, because there was no roomfor them in the inn.

Now there were in the same coun-try shepherds living out in the fields,keeping watch over their flock bynight. And behold, an angel of the

Lord stood before them, and the glo-ry of the Lord shone around them,and they were greatly afraid. Thenthe angel said to them, “Do not beafraid, for behold, I bring you goodtidings of great joy which will be toall people. For there is born to youthis day in the city of David a Savior,who is Christ the Lord. . . . You willfind a Babe wrapped in swaddlingcloths, lying in a manger.” And sud-denly there was with the angel amultitude of the heavenly host prais-ing God and saying: “Glory to Godin the highest, and on earth peace,good will toward men!”—Luke 2:1-14

JESUS AS AN INFANT 7And when eight days were com-

pleted for the circumcision of theChild, His name was called JESUS,the name given by the angel beforeHe was conceived in the womb.

And behold, there was a man inJerusalem whose name was Simeon,and this man was just and devout,waiting for the Consolation of Israel,and the Holy Spirit was upon him.And it had been revealed to him bythe Holy Spirit that he would not seedeath before he had seen the Lord’sChrist. So he came by the Spirit into

the temple. And when the parentsbrought in the Child Jesus, to do forHim according to the custom of thelaw, he took Him up in his arms andblessed God and said: “Lord, nowYou are letting Your servant departin peace, according to Your word;for my eyes have seen Your salvationwhich You have prepared before theface of all peoples, a light to bringrevelation to the Gentiles, and theglory of Your people Israel.” And Jo-seph and His mother marveled atthose things which were spoken ofHim. Then Simeon blessed them . . . .

8 JESUS IS WORSHIPEDNow after Jesus was born in Beth-

lehem of Judea in the days of Herodthe king, behold, wise men from theEast came to Jerusalem, saying,“Where is He who has been bornKing of the Jews? For we have seenHis star in the East and have come toworship Him.”

When Herod the king heard thesethings, he was troubled, and all Jeru-salem with him. And when he hadgathered all the chief priests andscribes of the people together, he in-quired of them where the Christ wasto be born. So they said to him, “InBethlehem of Judea, for thus it is

written by the prophet . . . . ”When they heard the king, they

departed; and behold, the star whichthey had seen in the East went be-fore them, till it came and stood overwhere the young Child was. Whenthey saw the star, they rejoiced withexceedingly great joy.

And when they had come into thehouse, they saw the young Childwith Mary His mother, and fell downand worshiped Him. And when theyhad opened their treasures, they pre-sented gifts to Him: gold, frankin-cense, and myrrh.

SATAN HATED JESUS BEFORE HIS BIRTH 9And another sign appeared in

heaven: behold, a great, fiery reddragon [Satan] having seven headsand ten horns, and seven diadems onhis heads. His tail drew a third of thestars of heaven and threw them tothe earth. And the dragon stood be-fore the woman who was ready togive birth, to devour her Child assoon as it was born. And she bore amale Child who was to rule all na-tions with a rod of iron.

—Revelation 12:3-5a

An angel of the Lord appeared toJoseph in a dream, saying, “Arise,

take the young Child and His moth-er, flee to Egypt, and stay there untilI bring you word; for Herod willseek the young Child to destroyHim.”

When he arose, he took the youngChild and His mother by night anddeparted for Egypt, and was thereuntil the death of Herod.

Then Herod, when he saw that hewas deceived by the wise men, wasexceedingly angry; and he sent forthand put to death all the malechildren who were in Bethlehem andin all its districts, from two years oldand under. —Matthew 2:13b-15a, 16a

10 THE BOYHOOD OF JESUSAnd the Child grew and became

strong in spirit, filled with wisdom;and the grace of God was upon Him.His parents went to Jerusalem everyyear at the Feast of the Passover.And when He was twelve years old,they went up to Jerusalem. . . . Asthey returned, the Boy Jesus lin-gered behind in Jerusalem. . . . Sup-posing Him to have been in the com-pany, they went a day’s journey, andsought Him among their relativesand acquaintances. So when they didnot find Him, they returned to Jeru-salem, seeking Him. . . . After threedays they found Him in the temple,

sitting in the midst of the teachers,both listening to them and askingthem questions. And all who heardHim were astonished at His under-standing and answers. So when theysaw Him, they were amazed; andHis mother said to Him, “Son, whyhave You done this to us? Look,Your father and I have sought Youanxiously.” And He said to them,“Why is it that you sought Me? Didyou not know that I must be aboutMy Father’s business?”

And Jesus increased in wisdomand stature, and in favor with Godand men. —Luke 2:40-49,52

JESUS IS INTRODUCED TO THE PUBLIC 11There was a man sent from God,

whose name was John. He said: “Iam ‘The voice of one crying in thewilderness: “Make straight the wayof the Lord,” ‘as the prophet Isaiahsaid.”

The next day John saw Jesus com-ing toward him, and said, “Behold!The Lamb of God who takes awaythe sin of the world!” And John borewitness, saying, “I saw the Spirit de-scending from heaven like a dove,and He remained upon Him. I didnot know Him, but He who sent meto baptize with water said to me,‘Upon whom you see the Spirit de-

scending, and remaining on Him,this is He who baptizes with the HolySpirit.’ And I have seen and testifiedthat this is the Son of God.”

—John 1:6, 23, 29, 32-34

Then Jesus, when He had beenbaptized, came up immediately fromthe water; and behold, the heavenswere opened to Him, and He saw theSpirit of God descending like a doveand alighting upon Him. And sud-denly a voice came from heaven,saying, “This is My beloved Son, inwhom I am well pleased.”

12 JESUS OVERCOMES TEMPTATIONNow when the tempter came to

Him, he said, “If You are the Son ofGod, command that these stones be-come bread.” But He. . . said, “It iswritten, ‘Man shall not live by breadalone, but by every word that pro-ceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”

Then the devil. . . set Him on thepinnacle of the temple, and said toHim, “If You are the Son of God,throw Yourself down. For it is writ-ten: ‘He shall give His angels chargeconcerning you,’ and, ‘In their handsthey shall bear you up, lest you dashyour foot against a stone.’ ”

Jesus said to him, “It is written

again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lordyour God.” Again, the devil tookHim up on an exceedingly highmountain, and showed Him all thekingdoms of the world and theirglory. And he said to Him, “All thesethings I will give You if You will falldown and worship me.” Then Jesussaid to him, “Away with you, Satan!For it is written, ‘You shall worshipthe Lord your God, and Him onlyyou shall serve.’ ” —Matthew 4:3-10

For in that He Himself has suf-fered, being tempted, He is able toaid those who are tempted.

—Hebrews 2:18

JESUS CALLS HIS DISCIPLES 13And as He walked by the Sea of

Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrewhis brother casting a net into the sea;for they were fishermen. Then Jesussaid to them, “Come after Me, and Iwill make you become fishers ofmen.” And immediately they lefttheir nets and followed Him. WhenHe had gone a little farther. . . , Hesaw James the son of Zebedee, andJohn his brother, who also were inthe boat mending their nets. And im-mediately He called them, and theyleft their father Zebedee in the boatwith the hired servants, and wentafter Him. —Mark 1:16-20

The following day Jesus wanted togo to Galilee, and He found Philipand said to him, “Follow Me.”

And as He passed by, He saw Levithe son of Alphaeus sitting at the taxoffice, and said to him, “Follow Me.”And he arose and followed Him.

He . . . continued all night inprayer to God. And when it was day,He called His disciples to Him; andfrom them He chose twelve whomHe also named apostles.

14 JESUS PREACHES GOOD NEWSThen Jesus returned in the power

of the Spirit to Galilee, and news ofHim went out through all the sur-rounding region. And He taught intheir synagogues, being glorified byall. So He came to Nazareth, whereHe had been brought up. And as Hiscustom was, He went into the syna-gogue on the Sabbath day, and stoodup to read. And He was handed thebook of the prophet Isaiah. Andwhen He had opened the book, Hefound the place where it was written:“The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,because He has anointed Me topreach the gospel to the poor. He has

sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,to preach deliverance to the captivesand recovery of sight to the blind, toset at liberty those who are op-pressed, to preach the acceptableyear of the LORD.” Then He closedthe book, and gave it back to the at-tendant and sat down. And the eyesof all who were in the synagoguewere fixed on Him. And He began tosay to them, “Today this Scripture isfulfilled in your hearing.”

So all bore witness to Him, andmarveled at the gracious wordswhich proceeded out of His mouth.

JESUS CLEANSES THE TEMPLE 15So they came to Jerusalem. And

Jesus went into the temple and be-gan to drive out those who boughtand sold in the temple, and over-turned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who

sold doves. Then He taught, sayingto them, “Is it not written, ‘Myhouse shall be called a house ofprayer for all nations’? But you havemade it a ‘den of thieves.’ ”

JESUS TEACHES ABOUT SIN“Even so you also outwardly ap-

pear righteous to men, but insideyou are full of hypocrisy and lawless-ness.” —Matthew 23:28

“But those things which proceedout of the mouth come from theheart, and they defile a man. For outof the heart proceed evil thoughts,

murders, adulteries, fornications,thefts, false witness, blasphemies.”

—Matthew 15:18-19Jesus answered them, “Most as-

suredly, I say to you, whoever com-mits sin is a slave of sin. Therefore ifthe Son makes you free, you shall befree indeed.” —John 8:34, 36

16 JESUS OFFERS NEW LIFEJesus . . . said to him, “Most assur-

edly, I say to you, unless one is bornagain, he cannot see the kingdom ofGod. Do not marvel that I said toyou, ‘You must be born again.’ ForGod so loved the world that He gaveHis only begotten Son, that whoeverbelieves in Him should not perishbut have everlasting life.”

“I have come that they may havelife, and that they may have it moreabundantly.” —John 10:10b

“And this is eternal life, that theymay know You, the only true God,

and Jesus Christ whom You havesent.” —John 17:3

“For as the Father raises the deadand gives life to them, even so theSon gives life to whom He will. Mostassuredly, I say to you, he who hearsMy word and believes in Him whosent Me has everlasting life, andshall not come into judgment, buthas passed from death into life.”

JESUS OFFERS LIVING WATER 17So He came to a city of Samaria

which is called Sychar. . . . Jesustherefore, being wearied from Hisjourney, sat thus by the well. . . . Awoman of Samaria came to drawwater. Jesus said to her, “Give Me adrink.” . . . Then the woman of Sa-maria said to Him, “How is it thatYou, being a Jew, ask a drink fromme, a Samaritan woman?” For Jewshave no dealings with Samaritans.Jesus answered and said to her, “Ifyou knew the gift of God, and who itis who says to you, ‘Give Me adrink,’ you would have asked Him,and He would have given you living

water. . . . Whoever drinks of thiswater will thirst again, but whoeverdrinks of the water that I shall givehim will never thirst. But the waterthat I shall give him will become inhim a fountain of water springing upinto everlasting life.”

anyone thirsts, let him come to Meand drink. He who believes in Me, asthe Scripture has said, out of hisheart will flow rivers of living wa-ter.” But this He spoke concerningthe Spirit, whom those believing inHim would receive. —John 7:37b-39a

18 JESUS TEACHES THROUGH PARABLES“Therefore whoever hears these

sayings of Mine, and does them, Iwill liken him to a wise man whobuilt his house on the rock: and therain descended, the floods came, andthe winds blew and beat on thathouse; and it did not fall, for it wasfounded on the rock. Now everyonewho hears these sayings of Mine, anddoes not do them, will be like a fool-ish man who built his house on thesand: and the rain descended, thefloods came, and the winds blew andbeat on that house; and it fell. Andgreat was its fall.”

“What man of you, having a hun-dred sheep, if he loses one of them,does not leave the ninety-nine in thewilderness, and go after the onewhich is lost until he finds it? Andwhen he has found it, he lays it onhis shoulders, rejoicing. JESUS TEACHES HOW TO BE BLESSED 19And seeing the multitudes, He

went up on a mountain . . . . Then Heopened His mouth and taught them,saying: “Blessed are the poor in spir-it, for theirs is the kingdom of heav-en. Blessed are those who mourn, forthey shall be comforted. Blessed arethe meek, for they shall inherit theearth. Blessed are those who hungerand thirst for righteousness, for theyshall be filled. Blessed are the merci-ful, for they shall obtain mercy.Blessed are the pure in heart, forthey shall see God. Blessed are thepeacemakers, for they shall be calledsons of God. Blessed are those who

are persecuted for righteousness’sake, for theirs is the kingdom ofheaven. Blessed are you when theyrevile and persecute you, and say allkinds of evil against you falsely forMy sake. Rejoice and be exceedinglyglad, for great is your reward inheaven.” —Matthew 5:1-12a

“Blessed are those who hear theword of God and keep it!”

20 JESUS TEACHES ABOUT PRAYERMen always ought to pray and not

“Two men went up to the templeto pray, one a Pharisee and the othera tax collector. The Pharisee stoodand prayed thus with himself, ‘God,I thank You that I am not like othermen—extortioners, unjust, adulter-ers, or even as this tax collector. Ifast twice a week; I give tithes of allthat I possess.’ And the tax collector,standing afar off, would not so muchas raise his eyes to heaven, but beathis breast, saying, ‘God be mercifulto me a sinner!’ I tell you, this man

went down to his house justifiedrather than the other; for everyonewho exalts himself will be abased,and he who humbles himself will beexalted.” —Luke 18:10-14

“If two of you agree on earth con-cerning anything that they ask, itwill be done for them by My Fatherin heaven. For where two or threeare gathered together in My name, Iam there in the midst of them.”

“And all things, whatever youask in prayer, believing, you willreceive.” —Matthew 21:22

JESUS TEACHES ABOUT BEING A DISCIPLE 21Then Jesus said to His disciples,

“If anyone desires to come after Me,let him deny himself, and take up hiscross, and follow Me. For whoeverdesires to save his life will lose it, andwhoever loses his life for My sakewill find it. For what is a man profit-ed if he gains the whole world, andloses his own soul?”

“So likewise, whoever of you doesnot forsake all that he has cannot beMy disciple.” —Luke 14:33

“If you love Me, keep My com-mandments.” —John 14:15

“This is My commandment, thatyou love one another as I have lovedyou.” —John 15:12

22 JESUS TEACHES ABOUT HEAVEN AND HELL“Not everyone who says to Me,

‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the king-dom of heaven, but he who does thewill of My Father in heaven.”

come as little children, you will by nomeans enter the kingdom of heav-en.” —Matthew 18:3b

“Enter by the narrow gate; forwide is the gate and broad is the waythat leads to destruction, and thereare many who go in by it. Becausenarrow is the gate and difficult is theway which leads to life, and there arefew who find it.” —Matthew 7:13-14

“So it will be at the end of the age.The angels will come forth, separatethe wicked from among the just, andcast them into the furnace of fire.There will be wailing and gnashingof teeth.” —Matthew 13:49-50

“Let not your heart be troubled;you believe in God, believe also inMe. In My Father’s house are manymansions; if it were not so, I wouldhave told you. I go to prepare aplace for you. And if I go and pre-pare a place for you, I will comeagain and receive you to Myself; thatwhere I am, there you may be also.”

JESUS TELLS US WHO HE IS 23“I am the living bread which came

down from heaven, If anyone eats ofthis bread, he will live forever; andthe bread that I shall give is Myflesh, which I shall give for the life ofthe world.” —John 6:51

“I am the door. If anyone entersby Me, he will be saved, and will goin and out and find pasture. I am thegood shepherd. The good shepherdgives His life for the sheep.”

“I am the way, the truth, and thelife. No one comes to the Father ex-cept through Me.” —John 14:6b

“I am the light of the world. Hewho follows Me shall not walk indarkness, but have the light of life.”

24 JESUS HAS POWER OVER DISEASEAnd behold, a leper came and

worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, ifYou are willing, You can make meclean.” Then Jesus put out His handand touched him, saying, “I am will-ing; be cleansed.” And immediatelyhis leprosy was cleansed.

who had a spirit of infirmity eigh-teen years, and was bent over andcould in no way raise herself up. Butwhen Jesus saw her, He called her toHim and said to her, “Woman, youare loosed from your infirmity.” AndHe laid His hands on her, and imme-

Then great multitudes came toHim, having with them those whowere lame, blind, mute, maimed,and many others; and they laid themdown at Jesus’ feet, and He healedthem. —Matthew 15:30

In spite of the multitude’s enthusiastic re-ception as He entered Jerusalem, Jesus

knew that His people would reject Himas King. He wept to think what wouldhappen to Jerusalem because theywould not receive the only One whocould bring them peace.

Now as He drew near, He saw thecity and wept over it, saying, “If youhad known, even you, especially inthis your day, the things that makefor your peace! But now they arehidden from your eyes.
