IT HAS BEENA PLEASUREDear Fraters,

Last month I told thestory of my patient

who had fallen on hardtimes and wanted me toextract healthy teeth sothat he could sell the gold

bridge. I asked for your opinions and ideas; sadlyonly one reply was sent—the frater suggested thatthe gold bridge could have been removed and atemp placed to allow the patient to sell the gold butkeep his teeth. I wish there could have been agreater exchange of ideas.

It has been a pleasure being your editor this year. Iwish everyone a wonderful summer and nothingbut the best for the future.

Letters to the Editor are welcome and appreciated

As my presidency draws to a close it ismy hope that I have in some small way

impacted on the future of our fraternity. Ifany of you get a chance, read the article byRabbi Korobkin in this month’s The JewishJournal (April 20-June 5) on page 33entitled “Give Until It Hurts.” It discussesthe ancient dilemma about philanthropy and should we only giveexclusively to Jewish charities? If you recall, I had raised that issue in mylast president’s message. It is a good read!

Another area that I hope I helped make a difference in has to do withchanges taking place right now. The younger guard is poised to take overthe helm of Alpha Omega just like many of our members did in the past.First and foremost, Alpha Omega must remain a Jewish organization, notan ethnic Jewish organization but a Jewish organization. Also, if ourdemographics begin to change and our ranks begin to grow, we may startto see additional non-Jewish members. Needless to say, it becomes moreimportant than ever to show our new members what Judaism is really allabout.

I look forward to a great CE program this (next academic) year inspiredby our newer members and the continuation of our “Young SocialGroup.” Just remember, the organization is only what we can collectivelymake it and we need to see each other as equal’s not individual groupsenslaved by language, culture or borders. My tenure as president wasmarked by several tragic events both nationally and internationally. We had ferocious storms in the Midwest, a tsunami in Japan and, if thatwasn’t enough, the passing of three beloved fraters. The good news wasour successful meetings and an attempt to place the fraternity on theright track.

So, let’s move forward together and at least make this year’s restructuringa triumphant victory. Thank you for the honor of allowing me to serve asyour president and the chance to use my bully pulpit to hopefully steerthe fraternity in the right direction.

A special thanks to Eddie, Amir, Ron, and especially Gene, for alltheir help.

Fraternally,

Alan Kaye

WE ARE PROUD !THREE ALPHA OMEGANS INDUCTED INTO USC DENTAL HALL OF FAME

Belatedly, I am pleased to report that the Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC had honored this pastNovember three Alpha Omegan faculty members into their prestigious Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony and reception was held in the Town and Gown event hall on the University ParkCampus. Drs. Richard (Rick) Kahn (L.A. Chapter- USC-1964) and Lawrence (Larry) Warner (SFVChapter- USC-1958), along with Kinuyu Levin, wife of our deceased L.A. Chapter frater, Bernard(Bernie) Levin (U of Illinois -1947, USC-1964) were present at the ceremony.

The beloved educators joined the ranks of three other Alpha Omegans, who have their names inscribed onbronze plaques located in the reception lobby of the dental center. They are: Drs. Dudley Glick (USC-1953), Charles Goldstein (UCSF-1944), and Charles Pincus (USC-1926).

The School of Dentistry Hall of Fame was established in 1975 to recognize School graduates and stafffaculty educators who have made extraordinary and remarkable contributions to the art and science ofdentistry through scholarly research, teaching, professional leadership and/or development of treatmenttechniques that advance dental science.

WE ARE VERY PROUD!

Fraternally,

Gene Manusov
