12 March 2017 SAINT ALOYSIUS PARISH PAGE 3

From the Pastor’s Desk… On the first reading of this first Sunday of Lent we see how God blesses Abraham for having been faithful to His commandments. God has asked Abraham his only son in sacrifice. For a loving father a son is at the center of his heart, representing the result of his love. Therefore his is a most precious “possession”, worthy of care, protection and love. When God asks Abraham the best of his house it certainly implies a sacrifice. What is Abraham’s response? Putting aside his feelings, his sorrows and personal agendas, he gives God the “best of the house” as an offering. The result is God’s recompense for his generosity and fidelity. Saint Paul in the second reading reminds us that God equally didn’t keep his own son. For the salvation of humanity, God gave away simply his best possession; Jesus Christ our Lord. It wasn’t enough for Him to send another king, another prophet, another saint… From the bounty of his heart he shares a portion of his own heart for our justification. And this gift, this sacrifice, this universal oblation continued giving fruits. In the gospel we see the transfiguration of the Son of Man. Jesus as an act of love removed the veil of what was separating heaven from earth, humanity form divinity, and mortality from immortality… Allowing us to see a glimpse of his own divinity and a head start of all that which awaits for us. The sacrifice of God our Father brings Jesus to a cross and from there to a sepulcher, from which he gloriously resurrects giving us abundant life, life eternal. The question that we ought to make to ourselves is what am I willing to sacrifice to God for my salvation? What is God asking me to present to Him as oblation to attain eternal life? How much is worth for me the Heavenly Kingdom? Discover it, identify it and present it to the Father. What do you have to lose? Nothing. What may you win? To be able to surround yourself in the light of transfiguration and to be part of the eternal glory in our Lord Jesus Christ!

Fr.

The Lord's Peace be with you!

One of the most difficult words to define is the word “Faith”. The Catholic Church defines Faith as “…the theological virtue by which we believe in God and believe in all that he has said and revealed to us, and that Holy Church proposes for our belief, because he is truth itself” (CCC #1814). One of the more classical definitions of Faith can also be found in Sacred Scripture: “…the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). Another word often used to understand Faith is “Trust.” Faith as a concept doesn’t make sense to people who are immersed in a secular mindset, since they rely solely on “empirical” knowledge, that which can be measured scientifically. Teaching children the meaning of faith is therefore no easy task in a materialistic society that places highest importance on minimalism, hedonism and individualism. Our children need to be reminded that they are special because they are created in the image and likeness of the One and True God. This responsibility falls upon us the adults in their lives. It is of great importance that, in partnership with one another we bring them to the true and beautiful understanding of Faith.

May God richly bless you!

Jose M. Morales Coordinator of Religious Education

LOSS Mass: Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide Mass

On Saturday, March 18 at 11 a.m., St. Gertrude Catholic Church will host a Mass in partnership with the Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic Charities Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide (LOSS) Ministry. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the US, claiming the lives of more than 44,000 Americans each year*. The effect of suicide reaches beyond family and friends, often leaving individuals with questions and nowhere to turn. LOSS offers hope and healing for those who mourn a loss to suicide. They provide counseling for individuals and families, a network of survivors, and education about the grieving process. This LOSS Mass is a unique opportunity for the community to come together and pray for those mourning a loss, for those who have lost their life, and for a greater understanding of respect life. Father Charles Rubey will preside at the Mass and speak about the LOSS ministry. To learn more about Catholic Charities LOSS ministry, please visit http://www.catholiccharities.net/GetHelp/OurServices/Counseling/Loss.aspx.
