June 27, 2012 TheAlmanacOnline.com The Almanac 21 By Jane Knoerle Almanac Lifestyles Editor A hub is defined as a center of activity, and that’s what proprietor Meh- met Erkus intends his newly branded Menlo Hub to be. The name was chosen in a contest that had 200 entries. Even Mr. Erkus was sur- prised by the enthusiastic response. Formerly known as the Oak City Bar & Grill, the Menlo Hub, located at 1029 El Camino Real in Menlo Park, sports a new look, a lively bar scene, live music three nights a week, and menus in the process of a makeover. The oak tree mural and pastel walls are gone, replaced by vivid blocks of blue and orange — colors Mr. Erkus says remind him of his native Tur- key. Walls are hung with large vibrant paintings by a local artist, and there are big screens for watching sports at the long bar. There’s even a small dance floor. A private dining room at the rear of the building has been remodeled. Booths opposite the bar have been replaced with communal tables, ideal for noshing with drinks. The Hub features “California cuisine with a Mediterranean flair,” according to its website. The menu is being updated to include new dining choices, as well as an expanded menu of bar food. The Hub is now serving din- ner, and plans to resume serv- ing lunch soon. An “early bird” dinner will be served from 4 to 6 p.m. With its makeover, The Hub hopes to attract a clientele look- ing for a more informal dining experience, with live music in a town not exactly known for its night life. For information or reserva- tions, call 321-6882. A Now it’s Menlo Hub New name, look for former Oak City Bar & Grill By Dave Boyce Almanac Staff Writer S ignificant increases in reve- nues and spending are every- where in the Portola Valley town budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1, but there are plausible explanations for them all. The budget shows projected revenues to the general fund of $4,588,589 and expenses of $4,584,201. The figures repre- sent 19 percent increases over the previous year and include a surplus of $4,388. The Town Council reviewed the budget on June 20 and will meet again on Wednesday, June 27, to hold a public hearing and vote on the budget. Projected changes for 2012-13 include: An $85,000 line item for the Blues & Barbecue festival: $50,000 in revenues dedicated to the purchase of open space, and $35,000 to put on the festival. A $20,000 contribution by Stanford University to main- tain the Dwight Crowder Trail, which the university recently rerouted in connection with the stipulations in its operating permit. This funding passes through for trail maintenance, including a pilot program to study invasive weed removal. Contributions toward the $588,000 renovation of Ford (baseball) Field, including $232,000 in state grants, up to $100,000 from the Little League, a $100,000 matching grant from the Sand Hill Foun- dation, public generosity, and possibly $80,000 from the sale of 100,000 shares of stock given to the town in 2007. Revenues would pay for expenses, if the project goes ahead. Some $137,000 from the state to repay a loan to the state of property tax revenues from Portola Valley (and all other cit- ies, towns and special districts) to replenish education funding in 2009, provided that the loans be repaid with interest within three years. A $65,000 increase in rev- enues generated by higher fees for Town Hall services such as building permits. The council expressed general satisfaction to Town Manager Nick Pegueros for the budget, though Councilwoman Ann Wengert asked whether the Finance Committee had com- mented on a projected 17 percent increase in costs for employee health insurance premiums and a 9 percent increase in state retire- ment contributions. “These are catastrophically large when you look at them as an annual change,” Ms. Wengert said. The Finance Committee meets in late July and town staff should have recommendations for the council in August, Mr. Pegueros replied, adding: “I think there are some win/wins for the town and the employees.” Other notable expenses pro- jected for the coming fiscal year include: A budget of $4,200 for the new Bicycle, Pedestrian & Traf- fic Safety Committee. A capital equipment budget of $67,500, which includes $29,000 for a new tractor to replace the current 32-year-old tractor, $30,000 for a portable emergency radio transmitter, and $8,500 for a microphone system for council and commis- sion meetings in the Historic Schoolhouse. former Menlo Park resident, will be touring Europe as the lead guitarist for Grammy-winning soul, R&B and jazz singer Erykah Badu. Mr. Lettieri, who gradu-ated from M-A in 2001, started playing guitar as a child. He

participated in the M-A Jazz Band as a senior, under Frank Moura, before leaving Califor-nia to attend Texas Christian University. He has embarked on a three-week tour with Ms. Badu, singer-songwriter, producer, activist and actress. He will play with her across Europe, serving as the lead guitarist. The tour began in Sofia, Bul-garia, and ends in Novi Sad,

Serbia, on July 14, according to Badu’s website. They will play Montreux (Switzerland) Jazz Festival, and venues in Lon-don, Brussels, Vienne (France), Munich, Milan, Nice, Perugia and Istanbul. Derith CoonanCommunity volunteer

Derith Coo-nan Middleton of Woodside died March 22 at the age of 88. Ms. Coonan grew up San Francisco. In her early teens, she and her sister, Janet, were enrolled at a school near Gene-va, Switzerland. Very few people spoke English and the classes were taught in German, a lan-guage that neither spoke. It was a testament to their strong wills that they both overcame these challenges at such a young age, say family members. In 1945 she married Terrace Coonan, a friend since child-hood. The couple moved to San Mateo, then to Woodside, raising their four children. The Coonans traveled extensively in Europe until his death in 1985. In 1993 Ms. Coonan married Arthur Middleton, whom she had also known since child-

hood. They explored the world together with many trips and their two families melded with frequent visits to their home in Woodside. Ms. Coonan had a lifelong love of gardening, painting, and flower arranging. She was active in the Junior League, Coyote Point Museum, and Filoli. She was a member of the Town and Country Club in San Francisco and the Menlo Country Club. She is survived by her children, Bruce Coonan, Kevin Kennedy Coonan, Sarah Coonan Hart, and Terence Michael Coonan; sister Janet Wentworth; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Sally BeltonFifth generation Californian

Sally Shepard Belton, a resi-dent of Menlo Park for the past 12 years, died of cancer April 16 with her family by her side. She was 81. Ms. Belton was born in Alameda and graduated from UC Berkeley,

where she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. She remained loyal to her Cal affiliation throughout her life, enjoying Big Game tailgates and lifelong friends, say family members. After her marriage to Herbert A. Belton, she lived in Mill Val-ley, where she dedicated herself to raising four children. The family later moved to Atherton. In 1981, the Beltons retired to Sun Valley, Idaho, where she enjoyed working at the local shops, particularly a children’s store, Duck Soup. A resident of Menlo Park since 2000, Ms. Belton will be remem-bered for her strength of spirit, sharp wit, impeccable taste and sense of style, say family mem-bers. She enjoyed entertaining, traveling, and playing bridge throughout her life. She is survived by her children Janet Belton, Stacey B. Ruther-ford, Mark Belton, and Logan Belton; brother Doug Shepard; and five grandchildren. Her life will be celebrated July 13 in Sun Valley. Donations may be made to VITAS Hospice Charitable Fund, 670 McCarthy Blvd., Suite 220, Milpitas, CA 95035 www.vitascharityfund.org.

“If I want a Best Seller, I advertise in the Almanac and the Weekly.” – Lyn Jason Cobb

As a Realtor serving Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Atherton, Portola Valley and Woodside, I do my utmost to provide extraordinary service to my clients. The Almanac and the Palo Alto Weekly is always where I advertise fi rst because I like the home delivery, editorial focus, and it is a great value. I have always had great results promoting open homes in the Palo Alto Weekly and The Almanac, and I also run in special publications like Spring and Fall Real Estate, Neighborhoods and Info Menlo because of the great coverage and online presence. I am also a big believer in the Palo Alto Weekly’s Open Home Guide, which is by far the most accurate and comprehensive. I’ve had many buyers bring in the guide to my ‘Open Homes’ to see what I have listed.”

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF: PHOEBE A. OLCOTT, aka PHOEBE ALLEN OLCOTT Case No.: 122405 To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of PHOEBE A. OLCOTT, aka PHOEBE ALLEN OLCOTT. A Petition for Probate has been filed by: CORNELIUS OLCOTT, IV in the Superior Court of California, County of SAN MATEO. The Petition for Probate requests that: CORNELIUS OLCOTT, IV be appointed as personal representative to adminis-ter the estate of the decedent. The petition requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. The petition requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the person-al representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to inter-ested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an inter-ested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held on July 10, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. in Dept.: 28, of the Superior Court of California, County of San Mateo, located at 400 County Center, First Floor, Redwood City, CA 94063. If you object to the granting of the peti-tion, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. If you are a creditor or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within four months from the date of first issuance of letters as provided in Probate Code section 9100. The time for filing claims will not expire before four months from the hearing date noticed above. You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Attorney for Petitioner: /s/ Judith V. WAGSTAFFECase No.: 122452 To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of WILLIAM D. WAGSTAFFE. A Petition for Probate has been filed by: MARJORIE WAGSTAFFE in the Superior Court of California, County of SAN MATEO. The Petition for Probate requests that: MARJORIE WAGSTAFFE be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. A HEARING on the petition will be held on August 1, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. in Dept.: 28 of the Superior Court of California, County of San Mateo, locat-ed at 400 County Center, Redwood City, CA 94063. Attorney for Petitioner:/s/ David L. Notice is hereby given that RECONTRUST COMPANY, N.A., as duly appointed trustee pursuant to the Deed of Trust executed by MICHAEL D MCCRACKEN, AND MARJERY MCCRACKEN, HUSBAND AND WIFE AS COMMUNITY PROPERTY, dated 06/16/2006 and recorded 6/27/2006, as Instrument No. 2006-095462, in Book , Page , of Official Records in the office of the County Recorder of San Mateo County, State of California, will sell on 07/23/2012 at 12:30PM, At the Marshall Street entrance to the Hall of Justice, 400 County Center, Redwood City, San Mateo County, CA at public auction, to the highest bidder for cash or check as described below, payable in full at time of sale, all right, title, and interest conveyed to and now held by it under said Deed of Trust, in the property situated in said County and State and as more fully described in the above referenced Deed of Trust. The street address and other common designation, if any, of the real property described above is purported to be: 114 HILDEBRAND ROAD, LA HONDA, CA, 94020. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrect-ness of the street address and other common designation, if any, shown herein. The total amount of the unpaid balance with interest thereon of the obli-gation secured by the property to be sold plus reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is $1,807,320.23. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept cashier’s checks drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, savings association, or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state. is attached to the Notice of Trustee's Sale duly recorded with the appropriate County Recorder's Office. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are consid-ering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automati-cally entitle you to free and clear owner-ship of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insur-ance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-800-281-8219 or visit this Internet Web site www.recontrustco.com, using the file number assigned to this case 12-0001054. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not imme-diately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
