INTRODUCTION

T h i s c o m p i l a t i o n i n c l u d e s most o f t h e g e o l o g i c a l l i t e r a t u r e on t h e Alaska P e n i n s u l a and a d j a c e n t a r e a s i n s o u t h w e s t e r n Alaska ( f i g . 1) p u b l i s h e d p r i o r t o J a n u a r y 1, 1972. As shown by f i g u r e 2 , t h e l a n d a r e a encompasses t h e A l e u t i a n Range, Unimak I s l a n d , Shumagin I s l a n d , and Bris t o 1 Bay lowlands a l o n g w i t h a d j a c e n t p o r t i o n s o f t h e I<uskokwim Mountains and Alaska Range. Repor t s d e a l i n g w i t h B r i s t o l Bay, t h e con- t i n e n t a l s h e l f b o r d e r i n g t h e p e n i n s u l a on t h e s o u t h , and S h e l i k o f S t r a i t a r e a l s o i n c l u d e d .

The b o u n d a r i e s o f t h i s a r e a a r e drawn t o i n c l u d e two p o t e n t i a l o i l - p roduc ing a r e a s , a p o r t i o n of t h e B r i s t o l Bay b a s i n and t h e Alaska P e n i n s u l a s u b p r o v i n c e . The Alaska P e n i n s u l a s u b p r o v i n c e i s t h e s o u t h w e s t e x t e n s i o n of t h e r e l a t i v e l y l i n e a r Cook I n l e t - A l a s k a P e n i n s u l a p r o v i n c e ; t h e s u b p r o v i n c e e x t e n d s through t h e a r e a of S h e l i k o f S t r a i t t o t h e t i p of t h e Alaska P e n i n s u l a ( f i g . 3) . I t i n c l u d e s modera t e ly deformed mar ine c l a s t i c rocks o f Mesozoic age and p redomina te ly nonmarine s t r a t a o f T e r t i a r y a g e . The B r i s t o l Bay b a s i n i s marked by t h e a r e a l d i s t r i b u t i o n of Qua te rna ry d e p o s i t s abou t t h e head of B r i s t o l Bay and a l o n g t h e n o r t h - w e s t f l a n k of t h e A l e u t i a n Range, The b a s i n i s l i m i t e d t o t h e n o r t h w e s t by t h e seaward e x t e n s i o n of t h e h i g h l y deformed, l o c a l l y i n t r u d e d , and metamorphosed rocks exposed i n t h e Kuskokwim Mounta ins . The b a s i n e x t e n d s southwestward t o t h e b a s e o f t h e c o n t i n e n t a l s h e l f . T e r t i a r y and Mesozoic s e d i m e n t a r y rocks make up t h e b a s i n . The T e r t i a r y s e c t i o n c o n s i s t s of nonmarine t o mar ine c l a s t i c r o c k s . Marine c l a s t i c rocks make up t h e Mesozoic s e c t i o n .

Dur ing c o m p i l a t i o n of t h e s e r e f e r e n c e s , s p e c i a l . e f f o r t was made t o i n c l u d e l i t e r a t u r e p e r t a i n i n g t o p e t r o l e u m geology. A l l a v a i l a b l e p e t r o - leum t r a d e j o u r n a l s were checked f o r a r t i c l e s p e r t a i n i n g t o t h e Alaska P e n i n s u l a and a d j a c e n t a r e a s . S p e c i a l e f f o r t was a l s o made t o i n c l u d e t h e c l o s e l y a s s o c i a t e d f i e l d s of s t r a t i g r a p h y , p a l e o n t o l o g y , s t r u c t u r a l geo logy , and g e o p h y s i c s . L i t e r a t u r e on mining o p e r a t i o n s and m i n e r a l d e p o s i t s i s w e l l r e p r e s e n t e d , a l t h o u g h no a t t e m p t h a s b e e n made t o r e s e a r c h i n d i v i d u a l p r o f e s s i o n a l and t r a d e j o u r n a l s d e a l i n g p r i n c i p a l l y w i t h mining o p e r a t i o n s .
