Nurse anesthetists have been providing anesthesia care to patients in the United States for nearly

wounded soldiers during the Civil War.
CRNAs were the !rst nursing specialty and nonphysician group to be granted the right to reimbursement
patients and insurance companies, thus controlling the escalation of healthcare costs.
CRNAs are highly cost-e"ective, quality anesthesia providers on the basis of educational costs, cost of
physician anesthesiologists to provide sedation, general, and regional anesthesia (as well as other diagnostic and therapeutic procedures) serving as the key to cost savings in the provision of anesthesia related services.
- A current license as a registered nurse.
- Graduation with a master’s degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia educational program.
CRNAs practice in every setting in which anesthesia is delivered: traditional hospital surgical suites and obstetrical delivery rooms; critical access hospitals; ambulatory surgical centers; the o#ces of dentists,
quality of care provided by CRNAs and their physician counterparts.

Alabama’s CRNAs
In Alabama, CRNAs are authorized to practice “under the direction of a physician licensed to practice medicine, or a dentist who is immediately available.” There is no requirement for CRNAs to be medically directed by a physician anesthesiologist.
