Application procedure for the AFS-Scholarship Karlshochschule International University

This document is giving you an overview on everything you need to know for your application and on everything you need to hand in order to complete the application. The deadline for applying to the scholarship is February 28th, 2019. For complete information on application and admission, please visit https://karlshochschule.de/en/bachelor/admission/application-admission-process/

You can easily apply online: https://application.karlshochschule.de/en/

Once Karlshochschule has received your application documents, it will be examined internally and you will be invited to participate in a Skype colloquium (admission interview) if your application meets the requirements.

After the colloquium, the Admissions Committee will decide whether to offer you a place to study and whether you’ll receive the scholarship. Note that applicants who do not receive the scholarship may still be granted general admission as students at Karlshochschule! You will be informed about the results as soon as possible. If you are awarded a scholarship, you’ll have 7 days to accept it.

In case of questions, please contact Karlshochschule International University: [email protected] +49 721 48095-329 www.karlshochschule.de/en

Your application documents consist of:

1. General letter of motivation The letter of motivation offers you the opportunity to explain why you have decided to apply for the program, why you think you will complete the program successfully and what you think your perfect role will be after graduation. The letter of motivation should be typed and cover one or two pages.

2. Letter of motivation for scholarship In your letter of motivation for the scholarship, you are asked to explain why you think you would be a good match as an AFS scholar. Please refer to your experiences when participating in AFS programs, your intercultural competence, your civil engagement, or anything else you think is worthwhile to men-tion.

2. Curriculum vitae in tabular form Your curriculum vitae should present a brief overview of your life to date.

3. Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (HZB) Anyone wanting to study at a university in Germany needs a so-called "Hochschulzugangsberecht-igung" (HZB), or higher education entrance qualification. This lets applicants show that their educa-tional background or professional qualification allows them to study in Germany, i.e. they have the necessary higher education entrance qualification to register for a course. An international higher edu-cation entrance qualification lets you study at a German university, provided that the international cer-tificate of education is recognized as higher education entrance qualification in Germany.

Here you can find out which educational certificates obtained outside of Germany make you eligible for admission to higher education in Germany

If you are from China, Vietnam or Mongolia, please submit a certificate from the Academic Evaluation Center (APS) of your home country with your application.

4. Language requirements Your English / German proficiency (depending on the language of instruction you choose) should cor-respond to a level of C1 or above according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

5. Letter of recommendation You need a letter of recommendation issued by the AFS office in your home country. It needs to be on AFS letterhead with stamp / seal of the organization and has to provide name and title of the person signing it. Other letters of recommendation (e.g. by schools or universities) may be provided in addi-tion.

6. Additional certificates (e. g. internships, extra-curricular activities) Additional certificates documenting vocational training, internships, international experience, extra-curricular commitment at school or in charitable/non-profit associations support a successful applica-tion.

7. Proof of financing (for international applicants) In order to get a visa you must be able to prove that you can finance your living expenses while study-ing in Germany. At least the first year of your studies must be completely financed. The German authorities assume a certain minimum amount which you must have at your disposal each month. At the moment this lies at 853 Euros per month which comes to a total of 10,236 Euros for the first year of studies. However, it is possible that proof of a higher amount might be asked for. Proof of financing can be shown in different ways. It is imperative that you enquire at the German Em-bassy in your country in what form the proof should be shown!

AFS and Karlshochschule

The three letters “AFS” represent the long his-

tory of the American Field Service - an orga-

nization that originated during World War I

and operated as a voluntary medical service

during both World Wars. Within 70 years, AFS

has established itself as the world‘s largest

exchange program provider. The organiza-

tion‘s goal has remained consistent since its

founding in 1948: to give young people the

chance to get to know other cultures and thus

promote tolerance. AFS counts Karlshoch-

schule as a strong partner in this endeavour,

teaming up with the university to launch this

scholarship. More info at www.afs.de

What we expect from our scholars

The scholarship is not tied to maintaining a

speciic GPA throughout the career. More

than that, we want our students to show a

high level of commitment to the university

and be good ambassadors. Scholars show

their involvement by participating in student

initiatives or representing Karlshochschule at

education or marketing events.
