PRAYER AND REVIVAL

Lessons from the life of Martyn Lloyd-

Jones

From the beginning to the end the life of

Martyn Lloyd-Jones was a cry

for depth in two areas—depth in

Biblical doctrine and depth in vital

spiritual experience.

Light and heat.Logic and fire.

Word and Spirit.

Again and again he would be fighting on

two fronts: on the one hand against

dead, formal, insti-tutional intellectu-alism, and on the

other hand against superficial, glib, en-tertainment-orient-

ed, man-centered emotionalism.

He saw the world in a desperate condi-tion without Christ and without hope; and a church with

no power tochange it.

One wing of the church was straining

out intellectual gnats and the other

was swallowingthe camels of evan-gelical compromise or careless charis-

matic teaching.

For Lloyd-Jones the only hope was his-

toric, God-centeredrevival, which he

described as:“A revival is a mir-acle ... something

that can only beexplained as the

direct ... intervention of God ... Men can

produce evangelisticcampaigns, but they

cannot and never have produced

a revival.”

--------

May we pray today, on our

church anniversa-ry, that God would

send spiritual awakening and

revival to us... for our city and world.

MORNING WELCOMEAND ANNIVERSARY ANNOUNCEMENT’

THE ECBC COVENANTAS RESPONSIVE READING

LEADER: As we trust we have been brought by Divine grace to embrace the Lord Jesus Christ, and by the power of the Holy Spirit to give ourselves in repentance and faith,

CONGREGATION: So we do now solemnly covenant with each other that, God enabling us, we will walk together in brotherly love.

LEADER: That we will exercise a Christian care and watchfulness over each other, that we will not forsake the assembling of ourselves together, nor omit the great duty of prayer both for ourselves and for others.

CONGREGATION: We affirm that the Bible is the verbally inspired Word of God, without error in the original writings, and the supreme and final authority for the Believer.

LEADER: We will endeavor with a holy resolve to make our teaching and total church ministry centered around the great themes of Holy Scripture, our essential message being Jesus Christ the crucified and resurrected Lord.

CONGREGATION: We will participate in each other’s joys and strive with tenderness and sympathy to bear each other’s burdens and sorrows;

LEADER: We will endeavor to bring up those under our care in the nurture and admonition of the Lord;

CONGREGATION: We will seek to walk daily in holiness and purity before the watching world, denying ungodliness and every worldly lust as we eagerly await the blessed hope - the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior;

LEADER: Since faith comes from hearing the message and the message is heard by preaching the Word of God, we pledge to faithfully support the Gospel ministry among ourselves and spread the Good News of God’s redeeming love to the ends of the earth.

CONGREGATION: Furthermore, we pledge that we will seek to wholeheart-edly live to the glory of Him who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light.

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness;

come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God.

It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise;give thanks to him and praise his name.

For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Our worship is fueled by the joy of the Gospel this morningas we celebrate the firm foundation

upon which the Lord has built our church - the foundation of His Word, His Grace, and The Gospel.

Let us give thanks today for 45 years of God’s blessings upon our church family... for this city... for our world.

The flowers in the sanctuary are placed to the glory of Godin honor of our church’s 45th Anniversary.

REFLECTION THOUGHTS FOR WORSHIP PREPARATION

You’re the God of this city You’re the King of these people You’re the Lord of this nation... You are You’re the light in this darkness You’re the hope to the hopeless You’re the peace to the restless... You are

For there is no one like our God There is no one like You God

For greater things have yet to come And greater things are still to be done In this city Greater things have yet to come And greater things are still to be done here

You’re the Lord of Creation The Creator of all things You’re the King above all kings... You Are You’re the strength in our weakness You’re the love to the broken You’re the joy in the sadness... You Are -- Chris Tomlin

People struggling with life in a fallen world often want explanations when what they really need is imagination. They want strategies, techniques, and principles because they simply want things to be better.

ButGodoffersmuchmore.

People need to look at their families, neighbors, friends, cities, jobs, history, and churches, and see the kingdom. They need imagination the ability to see what is real but unseen...they need to look at a city and see the glorious company of the redeemed being gathered, amidst a brutal spiritual battle, to live in union with God… All of this is possible because the King has placed his love and grace onthem...wemustnotofferasystemofredemption,aset of insights and principles.

ECBC 45thANNIVERSARY

HISTORY EXCERPTS

East Cooper BaptistChurch began on

August 1, 1974, when a group of earnest people,

desiring to organize a mission east of the

Cooper River,began meeting in

the homes of individuals.

The group organized as East Cooper

Baptist Fellowship and held its first

worship service at Wando High School on Sunday, August

18, 1974.

On February 16, 1975, the East Coo-per Baptist Church

Fellowship became a mission, sponsored

by First Baptist of Charleston. The newly adopted mission had a

membership of 79 people, and met

in Woodland Hall Academy.

On Sunday, May 23, 1982, with 74 in Bible study and 128 in morning worship,

Rev. Conrad “Buster” Brown began his

pastorate at ECBC. The church’s mem-

bership was 216.

AS ECBC looks at 45 years of God’s bless-

ings, and looks to the future, our ECBC

Mission statement poises us for contin-

ued ministry as the Lord blesses... to the

glory of His name:

“Equipping Peopleto pursue Jesus

Christ passionately as they impact

the culture.”

THE CHURCH: PROCLAIMING

THE GLORIES OF CHRIST

God created the world to communi-

cate his wonders.

Everything around us can be traced

back to this funda-mental resolve.

God has shown himself through

his mighty acts in history, through his

prophets who spoke and the Scripture

he inspired, and then preeminently

through his Son, Jesus the Messiah,

who said, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father”

(John 14:9).

The glory of God is the glory of

Jesus, and that glory, when it glares

the brightest, is redeeming grace

that dies for a sinful people, conquers

our greatest enemy, and secures a new humanity through the auspices of an eternal Spirit who

calls and conforms once-rebels to be

like Jesus where they live.

In a word, the glory of Jesus is the reality of his church — “the

real circumcision, who worship by the

Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus

and put no confi-dence in the flesh”

(Philippians 3:3).

The mission of God is a mission

through his people, the church, who

communicate his wonders by advanc-

ing his gospel.

This community of “little Christs” who

advance his gospel, as we’ve seen, do so as the on-the-

ground expression of Jesus’s

supremacy.

The heaven’s ring, The saints all sing:

“Great Is Your Faithfulness!”
