'No Problem' Is a Problem for Your Business

By Jim Blasingame, The Small Business Advocate

It has happened to all of us: You are being waited on at a res-

taurant, buying a product or returning something to a mer-

chant, and as an employee is delivering some kind of service

you say, "Thank you."

Good for you; your mother would be so proud. But she

wouldn't be impressed by what has become an unfortunate

response to "thank you."

After you say "thank you" for having your water refilled or

your order completed, there is an excellent chance the em-

ployee will say, incredibly, "No problem."

So, from this response, are you now to think that simply allow-

ing service to be delivered is some sort of a problem you've

created, from which you should pray forgiveness will be

granted? Should you feel relief that you've been redeemed by

this person with "no problem" absolution?

Clearly, American English has deviated to a level that makes

many feel nostalgic for casual. And it's difficult to pinpoint

where things ran off of the rails, but somehow the sublime "it's

my pleasure" has devolved into the sub par "no problem."

Well, my friends, let's get one thing straight: No problem is a

problem. When small business employees say "no problem" to

a customer instead of "you're welcome," it's a serious problem

that, over time, could be the equivalent of a business death

wish.

Think I'm overreacting? How much money do you spend get-

ting a customer to do business with you? How much energy

and resources do you invest into making sure your products,

pricing, display, etc., are just right? How many sleepless nights

do you spend worrying about how to compete with the Big

Boxes?

Now that we've established the enormity of these answers,

have you checked to make sure that no employee of yours

ever causes one of your customers to think--even subliminally-

-that the mere fact that they are doing business with you could

be some kind of a problem?

The only thing that is unique about the contact your business

has with a customer is the experience they have with you –

how they FEEL about doing business with you. Everything else

is a commodity. Everything! So in what universe does "no

problem" help your business maximize the positive emotions of

a wonderful customer experience? Stop saying it, and train

your employees to stop saying it.

There must be 39 different ways in English to express your

delight in serving a customer without saying "no problem." Use

one of them.

Big Trouble

Sent by; Janet from The Copy Shoppe

Two little boys, ages 8 and 10, were excessively mischievous. They

were always getting into trouble and their parents knew all about it.

If any mischief occurred in their town, the two boys were probably

involved.

The boys' mother heard that a preacher in town had been success-

ful in disciplining children, so she asked if he would speak with her

boys. The preacher agreed, but he asked to see them individually.

So the mother sent the 8 year old first, in the morning, with the

older boy to see the preacher in the afternoon.

The preacher, a huge man with a booming voice, sat the younger

boy down and asked him sternly, "Do you know where God is,

son ?"

The boy's mouth dropped open, but he made no response, sitting

there wide-eyed with his mouth hanging open.

So the preacher repeated the question in an even sterner tone,

"Where is God?"

Again, the boy made no attempt to answer.

The preacher raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the

boy's face and bellowed, "Where is God?"

The boy screamed and bolted from the room, ran directly home

and dove into his closet, slamming the door behind him. When his

older brother found him in the closet, he asked, "What happened?"

The younger brother, gasping for breath, replied, "We are in BIG

trouble this time,"

"GOD is missing, and they think we did it!"

Did You Know Technology 160 billion emails are sent daily, 97% of them are spam. Spam generates 33bn KWt-hours of energy every year, enough to

power 2.4 million homes, producing 17 million tons of CO2.

9 out of every 1,000 computers are invected with spam. Spammer get 1 response to every 12 million emails they send (yet

it still makes them a small profit).

There are some 1 billion computers in use.

There are some 2 billion TV sets in use.

There are some 3 billion cell phones in use. About 3 million cell

phones are sold every day. The first known cell phone virus, Cabir.A, appeared in 2004. Since 2008, video games have outsold movie DVDs.

About 1.6 billion people connect to the internet, 450 million of

them speak English. See list of internet languages. Google indexed it's 1 trillionth unique URL on July 25, 2008. That is

thought to be about 20% of all the pages on the Internet but a high

percentage of the World Wide Web (the public Internet).

One google search produces about 0.2g of CO2. But since you

hardly get an answer from one search, a typical search sension pro-

duces about the same amount of CO2 as does boiling a kettle.

Google handles about 1 billion search queries per day, releasing

some 200 tons of CO2 per day.

The average US household uses 10.6 megawatt-hours (MWh) elec-

tricity per year. Source: www.didyouknow.org
