Continued from page 1...Alex says it is a natural progression from Casanova restaurant

at The Three Swans Hotel from which modern kitchens provide fresh lasagne, pasta, sauces etc.

The delicatesen is mainly but not solely Italian. A delicious range of cheeses come from Italy, France and Britain. Local chutney and jams are supplied from Suzie Preserves. Olives and olive oil are in profusion.

A wide range of wines and spirits are to hand. There is much, much more including hams and Italian chocolate.

If you have not already done so, Casanova @ Home is defi nitely worth your time visiting in central Bridge Street.

My name is Lucinda and I am the owner at the new toy shop, Toys at No.10, that opened last year in Hungerford.

We stock many products made in England as well as made in Germany, however we also stock a company called Lanka Kade.

Lanka Kade, translated means the Sri Lankan Shop. The company produce beautiful, colourful and unique hand made wooden toys. All their products are made by the communities and therefore are fair trade which is very important to us and we love to support the communities.

Tomorrow, Saturday February 4 it is Sri Lanka’s Independence day. We will be offering 10% off all fair trade products that day only and will be fl ying the Sri Lankan fl ag in our shop window.

This will not only raise the awareness of such a fantastic company but it will also promote the importance of fair trade products.

Hungerford had to battle all the way in this tough local derby before getting the three points which kept them in second place in the league, but there is a hard programme

ahead, starting with a trip to 3rd. place Sholing next Saturday. The fi rst half was fairly even, and Didcot had a goal disallowed

for a foul on Diak John, whilst Hungerford hit the bar.Didcot took the lead after 49 minutes with a good header from

Paul Robinson, but Hungerford were soon level when Mark Draycott converted a penalty after 52 minutes and took the lead after 63 minutes when Luke Hopper scored following a corner from John.

Both sides fought hard to the end and Scott Davis headed against the post for the home side, who, even so, were happy to hold on for all 3 points.

Hungerford earned a meeting with Wycombe Wanderers in the Semi-fi nal of the Berks. & Bucks. Senior Cup with a 2-0 win over Burnham on Tuesday evening, Jamie Gosling and Raymond Spence scoring the goals.

How some individuals make great fortunes out of a bright idea has been a perpetual source of wonder and, having met many self-made millionaires, it is difficult to decide which one

I admire most. Certainly, the most astonishing, as well as the most rumbustious example I have encountered was Alan Bristow, founder of the highly successful Bristow Helicopters, who was a close friend and neighbour in Surrey for many years. I record the story of his first million as he told it to me.

Alan learned to fly helicopters while serving in the Fleet Air Arm during World War 2 and became so captivated by the possibilities of hovering flight that he decided to centre his life around them. In 1949, he was in French Indo-China (now Vietnam) hoping to sell helicopters to the French forces who were trying to stave off a determined attempt to end their colonial power. In one demonstration, he managed to rescue several French soldiers who were surrounded by the enemy, for which he was awarded the Croix de Guerre.

He then moved to the Antarctic where the extraordinary Greek shipping magnate, Aristotle Onassis, was operating a whaling fleet. During the four years he worked for Onassis, Alan demonstrated the power of the helicopter for finding whales and learned so much about them that he conceived the idea of a humane harpoon to be fired from a helicopter.

First, to his great surprise, he found that he could hover low over a whale without disturbing it. The whale simply ignored the machine. This gave him the idea of developing a harpoon which would instantly kill the whale with a powerful electric shock generated by equipment on the helicopter and passing through a wire attached to the harpoon. Having no barbs on it, the harpoon could then be withdrawn and wound back on to the helicopter.

Then he demonstrated not only that his idea would work but found that the shock made the tongue of the whale block the opening to its

lungs so that the carcase always floated and could be collected by the mother whaling-ship later. In all respects, his humane harpoon was far less cruel than the standard barbed harpoon fired into the body with all the consequent struggle.

So, in 1951, having patented his equipment, he set up a company called Air Whaling with every intention of selling it. He managed to do so to a Dutch whaling company in extraordinary circumstances. The company, which had an office in London, insisted on paying him in cash and, after receiving it, Alan found himself on an Underground train carrying a suitcase containing £1 million in banknotes!

Not long afterwards, the International Whaling Commission banned hunting by helicopter because it was so efficient that it would rapidly deplete the whale population!

With his new capital Alan set up Bristow Helicopters which was quick to exploit the oil boom, servicing rigs at sea. The company was such a huge success that when Alan finally lost it in a take-over battle he received so much in recompense that he came to my house to tell me and my wife ‘I’m not just a millionaire, now! I’m a multi-multi-multi millionaire!’ Only Alan could have said it.

Our last meeting, shortly before he died in 2009 aged 85, was at The Vineyard at Stockcross where, sitting in a wheelchair, he and his wife, Heather, gave lunch to my wife and me. He was as irrepressible as ever.

Whatever Alan Bristow was he was the only one of it.

A TALE OF THREE BRIDGES

MEMORIES OF HUNGERFORD & THE KENNET VALLEY

Once again the town is disrupted by necessary infrastructure repairs, nothing to compare

with the Gas board situation last year but still annoying if you are a dedicated walker as I still strive to be.

I am amongst the first to fully appreciate the need for pedestrian relief

on the canal bridge; the danger has been realised for a very long time. I remember back in the 50s and 60s the town council was receiving reports of dangers for walkers on the bridge. The late Hugh Hassall was an advocate of providing a solution. The camber of the west footpath leads a pedestrian dangerously close to the edge and as I grow older and regularly worship at the Bridge Street Methodist Church I am very conscious of the proximity of passing traffic. I am told that the prefabricated bridge should be arriving on site at the end of February and I am sure will be welcomed by all pedestrians. Sorry to hear that the half round coping bricks will not be replaced but then nothing is absolutely perfect.

Next week: Bridge No. 2. The Croft.

27.1.12LOCAL POLICE NEWSI just thought I would update you with recent news for your information. Overnight on Tuesday 17th January 2012 a number of motor vehicles were broken into and items re-moved.The vehicles targeted were vans and tools were tak-en. This occurred within the Town Centre area of Hungerford. We are asking for residents of the local community to ensure that their vehicles are secure and for them to remain vigilant. We are asking for any witnesses to contact us on the 101 Thames Valley Police Number. If you have been a subject of similar crime over the last 10 days then please let us know if you haven’t done already. We have received a report from a concerned resi-dent of Inkpen after they received a posted letter about sending money to China as there is a substan-tial amount of money that can be claimed. This in-formation has been passed over to the police and no money exchanged, however we wanted to send out a message to other residents who may have received similar. DO NOT send money to businesses that you do not know. -Claire DREWITT Neighbourhood Specialist Offi cer.

The little piggies that won’t be going to marketOld age is no barrier to living life to the full accord-ing to 76 year old Dick Miles. Born in Burbage, but living most of his life in Marlborough, Dick served an apprenticeship with Peter Nicolls Antique shop, long since gone from the high street. Here he learned a bit about wood turning and a great deal about upholster-ing, skills which would serve him well. On returning from Cyprus having completed his Na-tional Service, he set up on his own in the upholstery and carpet laying business. Although he retired over 10 years ago, Dick remains as busy as ever, his wood turning skills providing a great hobby. He recently delighted the children of St Mary’s Infant School, by making every single child a little wooden piggy for Christmas. These were under the tree in the church at the end of term service in which children sang their way through over a dozen songs, much to the delight of all.His many activities, which include visiting the Jubilee Centre once a week, endless woodworking, attend-ing church and generally helping out where needed, keep him busy and in touch. He’s a great believer in the power of a good chat to keep happy and positive. However, his favourite two hours of the week are spent listening to children read at St Mary’s School. He stepped into the shoes of his great friend Buster Cox, who sadly died last year.Dick is wondering whether he should embark on a new project, making Jubilee Piggies complete with red, white and blue ribbons. Local crafts or souvenirs are often sought by tourists, but the town seems rather short on items aimed at the souvenir market. It may fall to Dick to lead the way, perhaps some younger crafty entrepreneurs might follow his lead. -Val. Compton

26th October 2011: Dr Hugh Pihlens – “From Latvia to Hungerford”Over a hundred members of the Hungerford Histori-cal Association were treated to an excellent talk by Dr Hugh Pihlens last Wednesday night. Dr Pihlens was a very popular and highly respected GP in Hungerford for all his professional life but his talk focused on his family links with Latvia. His grandfather had been a Latvian nationalist revo-lutionary in the early 20th century and had to escape in the hold of a German cargo ship from the Russian police and their bayonets. Eventually as a non-English speaking Protestant refugee he arrived in England and was befriended by a Church of England vicar and given employment and sanctuary by the vicar’s family. He met and married an English girl and they settled down in the West Country where Dr Pihlens was born. A wonderful story much appreciated by the audience, a lot of whom resolved to research their own family his-tory.The next talk will be given by The Countess of Car-narvon “Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey” on Wednesday, November 23rd at 7.30pm in the Corn Exchange, Hungerford. -Shelagh Parry

Zumba into 2012If you think Zumba classes are the province of the young and very fi t – think again. Lau Vergara who runs Zumba classes from Monday to Friday, realised the need to run a “cool” class for those who are not quite so fi t or even quite so young. Class times and venues vary throughout the week so there is likely to be a class near you at a time you can attend.Says Lau, “No special gear is needed – just comfort-able clothes, trainers will do for footwear but most important, a willingness to have fun for an hour”. Details of Zumba classes (along with the cool classes or toning sessions) are available from Lau on 07747 61 71 99 or on http://ZwithLau.blogspot.com

Claire Perry MP and Parliamentary Anglers urge swift action to help the struggling River Kennet On 14th January 2012, Claire Perry, MP for the Devizes Constituency, took the current and former Chairmen of the Parliamentary All Party Angling group to see the unprecedentedly low water levels on the River Kennet. The group met representatives from Action for the River Kennet (ARK) and local residents at Manton near Marlborough to inspect the dry river bed and discuss solutions. Commenting, Claire Perry said:“Rainfall has been low for the last 18 months but it is the abstraction of water from the Kennet by Thames(Photograph courtesy of Marlborough News Online) Water that is the real concern. I welcome the Government’s commitment to reforming abstraction tariffs in their recent White Paper and we know that Thames Water are working hard to educate people on the need for water conservation with their “Care for the Kennet” campaign. Ultimately, though, we need to get the relief pipeline built for Swindon as this is the only thing that will protect the Kennet long term. By working with my Parliamentary colleagues including those here today we can keep the pressure up on Thames Water, Ofwat and on Ministers to get this urgent project underway”. Charles Walker MP, current chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Angling Group said:“As much as I enjoyed visiting Claire’s constituency, I was horrifi ed at the tragic state of the River Kennet. As a passionate fi sherman and in my capacity as the Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Angling, I will fully support Claire and the ARK’s Campaign to restore fl ows to this beautiful river. The Angling group will be lobbying the Government.” Claire was joined on her visit by; Charles Walker MP for Broxbourne, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Angling Group; Martin Salter, formerly MP for Reading, who is now the Campaigns Director for the Angling Trust; Dr Geoffrey Findlay, Martin Gibson, John Lawson and Charlotte Hitchmough from ARK and local resi-dents.· Figures from Thames Water show that rainfall in the local catchment area (Upper Thames) for 2011 was on average 20.42mm less than the 90 year long term average. Thames Water has said it would need around 80% of its long-term average winter rainfall to rule out the likelihood of drought-related water-use restrictions next year.· The proposed pipeline by Thames Water would link the water supplies for South and North Swindon to enable more water for the town to be taken from the Thames. Discussions between Thames Water and the Water Services Regulation Authority (Ofwat) are ongoing.
