The Adviser, Friday, September 23 to 30, 2011

At Christmas 1990, when the Soviet Union was collapsing, I received a card from Michael J. Butt, of whom I had never heard, urging me to contact him. I met and talked with him over twelve years when

he proved to be honest, accurate and wanted no money. Born in a working-class family, he had left school at 14 and later joined the Communist Party. He had contacted me because, after the demolition of the Berlin Wall, he was so disillusioned at having been duped into supporting an evil system and recruiting others to it that he wanted to ‘make some amends to society’.

In 1959, he had he rented the front room in a house in London belonging to a pre-war German-Jewish refugee who had become Secretary of one of the Hampstead branches of the Communist Party, being widely known as ‘Comrade Bridget’. In return for a low rent, Butt agreed to be doorman on the evenings when many leading Communists called for meetings at the house. He enjoyed the chore, feeling that he was rubbing shoulders with the great.

My inquiries confi rmed that Bridget was none other than the former Brigitte Kuczynski, a proven Soviet agent and recruiter listed as such in MI5 and CIA accounts of Russian espionage. Butt told me that in the early 1960s Brigitte paid regular visits to the London branch of Moscow’s Narodny Bank, which was regularly used for espionage purposes. So she was perfectly placed for receiving and delivering copies of stolen secret documents.

Who was delivering them to her? Butt described to me a tallish, slim, clean-shaven and very hunched man who wore dark clothes and a large black hat on his rare visits. Butt recalled that, whenever this man was due, Bridget would warn him ‘Someone will be calling tonight’, which required him to stay in and admit the un-named visitor, who walked through to her rooms at the back. The few words uttered by the mystery man revealed that he was a cultured Englishman who was already well-used to visiting the house.

I hoped that Butt could arrange for me to interview Brigitte, who, in 1991, was well and active, but, though he approached her on my behalf, she declined to talk.

On my last visit to Butt’s house in Gloucester he went to his loft and returned with a compact case containing a Russian-made device. He told me that, early

in 1961, Bridget had given it to him in some degree of panic to get it out of the house and dispose of it at some refuse tip. It was precisely the time when newspapers were reporting the arrest of two Soviet agents, calling themselves Peter and Helen Kroger, who had been posing as antiquarian booksellers while running several important spies. Their guilt had been proved by the discovery of a Russian-made transmitter cleverly hidden in their home in Ruislip.

Butt had been so intrigued by the gadget, packed in its grey, 17”x14”x 4”, white-handled case, that he had kept it. He could not show it to me again because, he became gravely ill and could not face any interviews or possible publicity during the tough treatment and brief remission. He died in 2002, aged 65. When I published a book called Treachery in the US in 2009 I sent his widow a signed copy. In return she has given me the gadget, which had remained undisturbed in the loft as she had been unaware of its existence until I told her about it.

Stamped ‘Made in the Soviet Union’ in Russian, it is a ‘portable enlarger-dark room’ - adapted to enlarge the tiny photographs taken by a Minox espionage camera used by spies for quickly copying secret documents without having to remove them. The Minox is so small - three and a half inches long, just over an inch wide and less than an inch thick – that it can disappear into a clenched fi st. The substantial enlarger is so cleverly designed that its many parts fi t neatly into the small case which can be quickly stowed away.

As the gadget stands, assembled, in my study in Kintbury, it gives me a frisson of excitement mixed with wonder whenever I look at it. Is it a long-missing link in what is, perhaps, the most important spy case of all time? If only it could speak!

NOAH’S ARK IN HUNGERFORD

MEMORIES OF HUNGERFORD & THE KENNET VALLEY

The attached story for which I offer my grateful thanks, was written for me by an old friend who wishes to remain

anonymous. In 1916 two Russian pilots fl ying over the Ararat

mountains of Turkey saw a “ship” partially submerged in a glacial lake; it was announced in the world’s press that Noah’s Ark had been found.

Forty years later aerial reconnaissance showed the outline of a large boat on the mountain embedded in a lava fl ow. The volcanic Turkish mountains lie close to the eastern edges of the Caspian and Black seas, where Noah was living. Global warming has raised sea levels in the Mediterranean causing a surge of water to breach the land bridge at the Strait of Bosporus and to sweep over the lower lakes to carry the ark up into the mountains.

The old biblical story says there were to be two animals of every kind put into the ark with full board and lodging for 369 nights. The ark had three internal decks but only one window and door, to which The Lord had the key.

Overcoming the logistics was a nightmare to say nothing of the public health problems. There would be waste disposal to consider, exercise areas, air-conditioning systems, veterinary and other medical facilities, power and lighting units, family and crew quarters etc etc.

Noah had been incarcerated in the ark for his own protection for the cause of the fl ood was the result of an earth catastrophe and the rain that fell was laden with sulphuric ash. In reality then Noah’s Ark was much more than the toy we played with in our childhood; it was the size of an ocean going liner and technically advanced. Imagine driving down the High Street in Hungerford one day and being stopped by a policeman who advised turning back as the road ahead was blocked. Noah’s Ark had come to rest with its stern end hard against the railway bridge and its bow in the middle of the canal. It was so wide one side was only yards from the chemist’s prescription counter, the other was well into the co-op; its height was colossal. Of course such thoughts of Noah’s Ark being in Hungerford are only seen in the imagination and today the old story of Noah as nothing more than an amusing childish tale....

Hungerford started lethargically and the visitors had the better of the early play, and although Hungerford had already had a goal disallowed

when Torr Spicer headed past Michael Watkins after only 9 minutes, it was the visitors who were on top, Jack Warren almost making it 2-0 when his shot hit the post.

There had been drama before the game when Ben Ashby, Hungerford’s assistant manager had been taken ill and after treatment by paramedics an air ambulance was called to take him to hospital and the kickoff was delayed by 15 minutes. Perhaps Hungerford were unsettled by this interruption and it took them some time to fi nd their form but they eventually found it and Mark Draycott headed the equalizer after an hour.

Hungerford were now well on top but it was not until 81 minutes that Jamie Gosling set up Dean Stow to give them the lead, and a brilliant solo effort by Gosling made it 3-1 after 86 minutes to give Hungerford a place in the draw for the next round, but it had not been easy.

Tools worth thousands of pounds have been stolen from at least 13 vehicles in Marlborough. One tradesman replaced tools after an earlier raid and then lost the replacements to thieves. Police have warned people to keep their vehicles locked .

A Hungerford June Flower Festival has been suggested to celebrate The Queen’s diamond jubilee next year.

The suggestion was made at the last Hungerford Town Council meeting at which the mayor, Cr Martin Crane appealed to townspeople for celebratory suggestions.

Walks and a general sprucing up of the town have already been suggested.

The council is also discussing a more pro-active role in marketing Hungerford.

Hungerford Town Council is retaining the services of former councillor Rod Desmeules in relation to the town’s Chistmas lights. Rod has been the backbone behind the town’s lights for many years during which the lights have been pronounced by far the best in the area. The last Hungerford Town Council meeting was told “Rod really is Mr Hungerford Christmas Lights”.

SHOW AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS

The Royal County of Berkshire Show at Newbury Showgrounds was again an outstanding success at the weekend with thousands of people attending and rain failing to dampen enthusiasm.

St John’s in Marlborough is getting ready for what it expects to be its biggest ever school reunion on Sat 8 October, involving ex-students from St John’s as

well as its two predecessors, Marlborough Grammar School and Marlborough Secondary Modern.

The day has been put together following requests from many ex-students to repeat the 2009 event and invite ex-students to the new building.

Kate Hunter, St John’s Development Offi cer says the day is going to be one to remember. “So many people attended our last reunion and met up with old friends who they had lost touch with that we are sure October 8th will be another great day. If people have questions about the day they should email [email protected] .

We are aiming to raise money from the event to help our fundraising campaign for our tennis courts and all-weather pitch - the two areas that we haven’t yet been able to complete at the new school. So not only will visitors have a great time, but they will also be doing their bit to support the young people of Marlborough!

The school will be open during the day from 11:00am to 4:00pm for ex-students of St John’s, Marlborough Grammar School and Marlborough Secondary Modern to meet up. The restaurant will be open for lunch and refreshments and a licensed bar will be available all day. Tours of the new school building, which opened in December 2009, will be available, giving ex-students a chance to look around and compare the facilities at the new building to their own school days.

Boards will be available for students to leave messages and get in touch with old friends, and everyone is being asked to bring a copy of a photo of themselves from their schooldays to add to the display.

In the evening ex-St John’s student Mark Jones will be guest DJ at a School Reunion disco featuring music from the 70s, 80s and 90s. Tickets are on sale for the School Disco at £10 per person from St John’s. A licensed bar will be available throughout the evening. Anyone wanting to reserve a classroom for a class reunion or buy School Disco tickets should send a cheque (Disco £10 per person, Daytime room bookings £10 per hour) and a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Reunion Disco, St John’s, Marlborough SN8 4AX.

The reunion day is on the same day as Marlborough Mop Fair and some ex-students are planning to meet up for a full day, starting with a tour of the school and lunch, then spending a few hours in town at the Mop Fair, before returning to the school disco in the evening.

Information about the day has been posted on the School Facebook and Friends Reunited sites and more information is available from Kate Hunter at St John’s on 01672 519575 or [email protected].

EX-STUDENTS PLAN REUNION DAY TO

REMEMBER

The Salvage Trashion Show held at St John’s Theatre on the Hill last November raised almost £7,000 for two good causes, Charlie’s Charity, and the fundraising campaign

for the St John’s School sports facilities, each receiving a cheque for £3,475.

Two of the organisers, Jane Lamb and Angela Hobbs, visited St John’s recently to present a cheque to Headteacher Dr Patrick Hazlewood. Jane’s son Charlie was a St John’s student and Charlie’s Charity was set up in his memory following his death on 26 September 2009 at age 18.

The competition was called Salvage and it was all about designing a wearable item or outfi t made from old bits and pieces that were past their wear-by date into something individual and long lasting. The judges wanted to see what young people could do with their old clothes to turn them into tomorrow’s wearable fashion trends, encouraging creativity and awareness of the planet and their future. Encouraging young sustainable entrepreneurs to show off their talent. The results were outstanding.

Out of over 350 entries from several schools in Wiltshire, including seventeen entries from St John’s. Thanks to everyone who was involved.
