“Dr. Starkman shares a smile”Going to the dentist is something few people look forward to.Since most of us make an effort to go every six months, wouldn’tit be great if we actually liked going? Well, one local dentist ischanging peoples’ perceptions about visiting the dentist. Dr.David Starkman is proving he is more than just a dentist; he isa friend to the community through his dedication to providingdental services to children for free. The program is calledDentistry from the Heart, and it is spreading smiles across thearea!Over the past few weeks, there has been much excitementabout the 5th Annual Dentistry from the Heart event scheduledto take place on Saturday, April 20th, from 8-4 at Dr. Starkman’soffice, located just south of the Ichabod Crane High School onRoute 9 in Valatie. Dr. Starkman and his team have donatedover $25,000 in free dental care to more than 160 Columbiaand Rensselaer County residents over the past 4 years. “It allcomes down to wanting to provide something greater to my

community” said Dr. Starkman. “The services provided at ourDentistry from the Heart event help more than just a child’steeth, it gives them a renewed reason to smile.”In a time when families are stretching dollars for the necessities, routine cleanings and exams can get pushed to the back burner.Dr. Starkman realized this and found a way to help make dentalcare more affordable for families. WSL K-KIDS COLLECTED BOOKS TO SHARE

During the month of February, students from WSL K-Kidsinitiated a school-wide service project. The goal was to collect1,000 “gently loved” books. We wanted to share a love ofreading and books with others that might not have as manybooks. If we were able to accomplish this goal, then the studentswould be able to have a theme day at the end of the month. We’re happy to report that we far exceeded that goal with acollection of over 3,245 books!!! These books have beendonated to Joseph’s House in Troy, Seton Health Pediatricsoffice in Troy, and other agencies that could use some books. On March 1, WSL students were ready to celebrate theiraccomplishment. Our pajama day theme tied in perfectly withDr. Seuss’ birthday and READ Across America Day. Ourlibrarian, Mrs. Yost, dressed up as the Cat in the Hat and reada Dr. Seuss book to students, and we had DEAR time during theday. Take some time to share a great book with your child. Therewards are priceless! ~ Submitted by Laura Zalucky

If the old saying, “In like a lion, out like a lamb” is true, then let’shope that the rest of this month will finish up nicely! I would liketo thank Dave Van Wormer, DPW Commissioner, and his crewfor their efforts in keeping our streets clean and safe throughthis winter. With the luck of the Irish this month, we can hopethat we are heading into nice spring weather. This year has had a productive start with working on a numberof projects that will have positive, long-lasting impacts on theTown of East Greenbush. The Waste Water Treatment Plant project, so everyone isaware of the status, is one that is very important to myadministration. We are currently still in the early financial stagesof planning. We are working together with the Engineers to laythe groundwork necessary to keep the project moving forwardat a rate that will keep us on schedule. On February 27th, Joe Cherubino, Hank LaBarba and MattMastin made a presentation during a Public Information Sessionregarding the Water Quality Project and Hampton Manor WaterQuality Improvement Project. The purpose of this InformationalSession was to provide the public with the necessary informationto keep the natural resource within our Town Beautiful. Onbehalf of the Town Board, I would like to thank Joe, Hank andMatt for their hard work. This was a very informativepresentation, and we look forward to seeing the results! The Roundabout on Route 4 and Mannix Road Project iscurrently on track. On March 15th, the Advanced Detail Planswere submitted and are currently pending approval from theDepartment of Transportation. Once we receive approval, thenext step is approval for Federal funding. Upon approval andcompletion of each step successfully, we hope to see the projectbeginning in July!On behalf of the Town of East Greenbush, I would like towelcome East Greenbush Police Officer Mark Mann home fromhis fourth tour in Afghanistan. It is an honor to have such aman on our Police Force. We hope that he is enjoying beingstateside with his family, and we look forward to his return towork! Thank you, Mark, for your hard work and dedication toour Country. From my office and the Town of East Greenbush I wish everyonea Happy Spring! Be Well!

As legislative representatives of District 2, including the towns ofEast Greenbush, North Greenbush and Poestenkill, we are happyto provide our constituents with a report on actions taken at theMarch 12, 2013 legislative meeting. The Legislature has worked hard to generate a savings for taxpayers, and the March meeting marked an important accomplishment inthat effort. During 2012, the Legislature generated a savings of$115,000, and that savings placed in a Taxpayer Protection Fund. The Taxpayer Protection Fund has been used in recent years toreduce the amount of tax increases and protect needed services. The savings from 2012 will be used in the next budget process tobalance the budget and legislators approved a transfer of the savingsto the fund at the March meeting. The savings came about throughreductions in personnel and purchases, less supply purchases andother cost saving measures. The March meeting also included the annual State of the Countyaddress by County Executive Kathleen Jimino. The County Executivediscussed economic development efforts and recognized the effortsof the County Legislature in extending sewer service to Regeneron.Regeneron, a bio-pharmaceutical company, is expanding its EastGreenbush facility and creating 300 new jobs. The County Executive also touched on shared service efforts andother cost-cutting moves that have helped the county maintain asolid bond rating and receive positive financial audits and reviews.County Clerk Frank Merola will be returning $1 million in revenueto the county thanks to efficient operation of his office. We were happy to welcome Cassandra Jane Werking of EastGreenbush to commend her for her service as Siena College StudentSenate President. The daughter of Jim and Geri Werking, CassandraJane is continuing her family’s record of public service and sheworked to expand transportation options, services for commutersand other services for students.Days after the meeting, we were pleased to participate in the Troop528 Eagle Court of Honor as troop members Joshua Glasser, AndrewGlanton and Justin Arsenault earned the rank of Eagle Scout, thehighest rank for Boy Scouts. Congratulations to the Scouts, theirfamilies and the troop. The next meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature is Tuesday,April 9, 2013. Residents are welcome to contact us at the legislativeoffices by writing to the Rensselaer County Legislature, 1600 7thAvenue, Troy, NY 12180 or by e-mailing us via the officiallegislative website at www.rensselaercounty.org.

Although you wouldn’t know it by looking outside, spring sportsare just around the corner. Many of the pre-season scrimmagesthis week were postponed, but there is still a light at the endof the tunnel! You can expect to hear about some APHS varsitysporting events next week! This week I will be addressing asport rarely mentioned by the column, due to its absence atAverill Park, but whose athletes deserve to be recognized. This week the AP Swimmers took central stage. Although APdoesn’t have a swimming team, there are a number of athletesthat take it upon themselves to compete through other schoolsor in the community. This week was the Gold Championships for the AdirondackLeague Swimming Competition. The meet involved athletesfrom Utica to the Canadian Border to Vermont. Averill Parkwas represented by three swimmers: Sarah Herbold an 8thgrader at Algonquin Middle School and Jessica McMillan andSean Zelenke of Averill Park High School. The youngest of the swimmers, Sarah Herbold, swims for theAlbany Starfish Swim Club. Sarah took first place for the 1650yard freestyle (one mile), first place for the 500 yard freestyle, first place for the 100 yard freestyle, and second place for the50 yard freestyle and 200 yard free-style. In addition, sheplaced in the finals for all of her events that included 100 yardbutterfly, 100 yard backstroke, 400 yard Individual Medley, and the 200 backstroke. She also received a Second PlaceHigh Point Award for her age group of 13-14. This excludedthe 1650 yard swim. Congratulations Sarah and just keepswimming! The two high school students, Jess and Sean, both swim forUncle Sam Swim Club. Both of them also represented boththeir own team and Averill Park very well. Jessica finished 8thplace in the 100 yard back, 16th in the 100 yard free and 12thin the 200 yard fly. Sean took 11th in the 500 yard free, won14th in the 200 m and finished 15th in the 100 yard back.Great job to both Sean Zelenke and Jessica McMillen for eachbeing named MVP on their individual swim teams and making itto the finals in 3 events.Congratulations to all the swimmers who competed in the GoldChampionship. Your skill and initiative to tackle a sport notplayed at your school, and at such a high level, is outstanding. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contactme at [email protected].

Spring sports at AverillPark High School havefinal ly begun, whichmeans all our baseballplayers are working hardevery day to make surethey are ready for thelong season to come. Ournext athlete of the weekis a scholar athlete whohas been playingbaseball since he couldpick up a bat and ball.Greg Hotaling, a senior atAPHS, is a four yearstarter for the varsityteam. His main positionsare center f ield andpitcher. Greg enjoysplaying the game that heloves and the added

competition just drives him to work harder. During games, hegets into his “zone”, where he feels as if he has everythingunder control and he is unbeatable. Being a four year starteron a varsity team doesn’t come easy to anyone, it takes lots oftime and dedication. Hotaling believes that the season neverreally begins or ends for him, but rather, it lasts all year long.Greg practices on his own in the off-season as much as he canand then takes a month or two off. After that, he starts backup right where he left off so he can improve in any way possible.Greg has also been very academically successful over the years. He has always been the type of student to get his work doneand strive to earn the best grades possible. “Being a scholarathlete means that you can balance your school work alongwith playing a sport,” says Hotaling. This year he is takingPhysics, Pre-Calculus, Men’s Literature, Detective Fiction,Participation in Government, Economics, Engineering Designand Development and Computer Integrated Manufacturing(CIM). In the future, Hotaling would like to continue playingbaseball as long as possible and at the highest level he canachieve. He is currently looking at Central Connecticut StateUniversity where he would play baseball and major in MechanicalEngineering. In his spare time, Greg likes to spend most of histime outside by fishing, hunting and playing some casualbaseball. A lot of people have helped inspire Greg to be theperson he is today including his family, friends and coaches. Hewould like to thank his coaches and his dad for always pushinghim to do the best that he can at everything. We wish Greg andthe rest of the Varsity Baseball team the best of luck in theirseason!

SCHODACK TOWN BOARD OPPOSES

NY SAFE LAW

Letter of the Editor: On January 15, 2013, Governor Cuomosigned into law the NY SAFE Act (Secure Ammunition andFirearms Enforcement Act). As one of 10 motions consideredin their meeting on March 14, the Schodack Town Board (STB),without debate, unanimously approved resolution 2013-099opposing the NY SAFE ACT. Key provisions of NY SAFE include:1) a mental-health alert; 2) a tougher assault weapons ban; 3)stronger regulations on ammunition; 4) statewide recertificationof handguns and assault rifles; 5) universal background checks- closing the private-sales loophole; 6) the Webster Provision, making murder of a first responder engaged in duties an A-1felony; 7) an extension of Kendra’s Law; 8) protection of families(when under an order of protection); 9) safe gun storage 10)provisions to keep guns out of schools; and 11) tougher penaltiesfor illegal gun use.The Board members spent as little effort in drafting Resolution2013-099 as in debating it; the verbiage comprising 2013-099is identical to Resolution P/68/13 passed by the RensselaerCounty Legislature. Are the STB members encouraged to votea certain way by higher-ups in the Republican Party? Is theSTB expected to march lock-step with the NRA? The resolutionrefers to Second Amendment rights; however, we all know thatthere are common-sense limitations to the amendment. Onecan’t own a 50-caliber machine gun, a grenade launcher, or ahowitzer. Voters may like to know what specific provisions ofNY SAFE STB members found objectionable or an infringementon second-amendment rights. There are members on STB whonever say a word in meetings other than “aye” to vote with themajority. We would like to know their opinions on universalbackground checks and high-capacity magazines. Since theSTB has brought up the issue of guns, they should have aserious, open debate about the issue, and whether, for example, members are in favor of arming principals and teachers inSchodack schools. We question whether the STB, in passingthis second-hand resolution, has given the issue of guns anyserious thought. ~ David and Barbara SpinkEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for allintents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of itscontents.

As legislative representatives of District 4, including the townsof Schodack, Nassau and Sand Lake, we are happy to provideresidents with an update on actions taken at the March 12,2013 legislative meeting. In recent years, the Legislature has operated legislative officesunder budget. We are proud that for 2012, the Legislaturegenerated a savings of $115,000. This amount will be assignedto a Taxpayer Protection Fund that has been used during thepast two years to help the county stay under the state propertytax cap and protect needed services. The savings in the Legislature has meant the legislative budgetis at a level comparable to the early 1990s. A re-bid of thecounty insurance policy two years ago netted a $900,000savings and brought insurance costs below what the countypaid in the early 1990s.County Executive Kathleen Jimino delivered her 2013 State ofthe County address at the meeting. The County Executivediscussed county cost-cutting efforts along with job creationand economic development projects. She also discussed thework by the Legislature in supporting a project to expand theRegeneron facility in East Greenbush, which will help create300 new jobs, by extending county sewer service. The Legislature passed a resolution seeking an audit of thestate Medicaid program, following news reports of fraud in thetaxpayer-supported system. We were joined by the family of Kristopher Nichols, who passedaway after a brave fight with a serious illness. Chris was knownas a great family man and friend and he will be missed. The Legislature was also joined by the family of Donald Justusof Castleton, who was active in civic and community affairs forgenerations. Don recently passed away, and we thanked hisfamily for his dedication and contributions to our county. We also passed a resolution mourning the passing of ArchieSherman of Nassau. Archie passed away after decades ofservice to the community, leaving behind many friends.Legislators also passed a resolution in memory of HaroldLoveridge, a Sand Lake resident, veteran of World War II whowas active in Kiwanis and helping improve Butler Park. The next meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature isTuesday, April 9, 2013. Residents are welcome to contact usat the legislative offices by writing to the Rensselaer CountyLegislature, 1600 7th Avenue, Troy, NY 12180 or by e-mailingus via the off icial legislative website atwww.rensselaercounty.org.

THANKS TO EAST GREENBUSH SCHOOL

DISTRICT EDUCATORS

Letter to the Editor: Unfortunately, so much of what we reador hear in the media regarding education these days is negative. As parents, we want to take this opportunity to recognize themany outstanding educators and staff working in the EastGreenbush Central School District. Our community is fortunate to be served by many dedicatedteachers, staff, aides and administrators who work hard eachday in the face of considerable challenges to educate ourchildren, from the elementary to middle to high school levels. As parents, we recognize the hard work and dedication ofthese educators serving the East Greenbush Central SchoolDistrict. We are seeing the results of that effort, as our daughterGianna recently made the Principal’s List and High Honor Rollat Goff Middle School. Our son Luciano has also transitionedsuccessfully to Columbia High School after completing middleschool. We are very proud of our daughter and our son, butrecognize that they did not get there alone. The efforts ofthose who work in the EGCSD are paying off for our children. We are particularly proud that Gianna has been on the Principal’slist numerous times, has been an Honors student during hertenure at Goff, works hard to maintain her grades and hasbeen chosen to participate in the National Young Leaders StateConference. Thanks in particular to Principal Matthew Sloane, HousePrincipal Daniel Garab and House Principal Cara Talmadge fortheir efforts, along with the many teachers, staff and aideswho have made a positive difference for our daughter, ourson and the lives of many other students. Your work is havinga positive impact today and in shaping a brighter future forour community. ~ Leon and Dena Fiacco, WynantskillEditors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinionor endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and forall intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity ofits contents.

The Man who never was.

Ronald can be reached at:[email protected]

This is one of the finest and most significant hoaxes in history. It had a very

limited audience - the German military intelligence and command structure up to

and including Hitler. As plans got under way for the Allied invasion of Sicily inJune 1943, British counter-intelligence agent Ewen Montagu masterminded a

scheme to mislead the Germans into thinking the next landing would occur inGreece. This extraordinary operation, the stuff of legend, called for a dead body,

dressed as a Royal Marine officer, Major William Martin, and carrying false information about apending Allied invasion of Greece, to wash up on a Spanish shore near the town of a known Nazi

agent. Major Martin was a completely fictiticious character - The Man Who Never Was. He neverexisted.

The challenge was to make the scenario so perfectly believable that the Germans would acceptthe documents as genuine. The plot was given the code name “Operation Mincemeat.”: The plan

was to have Major Martin’s body, still clutching the briefcase containing the letters he was carrying, washing up on the beach on the coast of Spain. An overturned life raft was to be found in the same

area, giving the illusion of a plane crash at sea on the way to Gibraltar. The letters Major Martin carried were carefully designed deceptive fakes intended to suggest thatthe Allied invasion would be aimed at Greece and Sardinia, NOT Sicily. The body was iced down

in a special container, and loaded aboard a British submarine. The onshore wind carried the bodytowards shore where the fisherman found it. After that the Spanish did exactly as Montagu had

predicted. The body was found by a Spanish fisherman and was turned over to Spanish authoritiesand then to the German Agent who had the documents copied.

To sum it up, the hoax worked beyond Montagu’s wildest dreams. It fooled everyone in theGerman command, including Hitler. The Germans to split and diluted their defenses in Sicily in a

catastrophic way. An important Panzer division was diverted to Greece. A useful naval unit wassent to the Aegean, taking it out of action in Sicily. Defensive efforts were diverted from Sicily to

Sardinia and Corsica. Significant parts of Sicily’s defenses were moved to the northern coast to beready for an attack from Sardinia.

The seriously weakened defenses of Sicily were unable to withstand the huge Allied assault andcollapsed fairly quickly. After a few days the Germans began to suspect something, as the invasion

of Sicily continued and nothing was happening at Sardinia and Greece, but it was too late to recover.“Mincemeat” had been swallowed whole.
