Introduction
Sammy the Caterpillar came to visit our class
during our science unit. Each student got their very own
caterpillar. We watched with enthusiasm each caterpillar
grow, molt, grow and finally turn into a chrysalis. Then
one magical morning, butterflies began emerging from the
chrysalises. And that began the story of The
Adventures of Sammy the Caterpillar. This book is the
result of the efforts of 20 second grade students. They
all contributed, not only story ideas, but they actively
selected just the right adjectives, verbs and dialogue.
They worked hard to make all the illustrations. I think we
all learned making a book was hard work – but it was fun
too! Congratulations Room 27!

NCE upon a time there was a
little caterpillar named Sammy.
Sammy was ‘born’ one beautiful
spring day. Actually, he hatched
out of an, itty-bitty, tiny turquoise
egg. The itty-bitty, tiny turquoise
egg was resting on an enormous
green leaf.
OOOO
11
Then he got SUPER hungry and
started chewing on the leaf.
“Delicious” thought Sammy.
“Yummy!” shouted Sammy. He ate
and he ate.
12
While he was busy eating a dark
scary shadow loomed over the leaf.
He looked up only to see a huge
black wing and a giant sharp beak
only inches away.
13
“Hide!” shouted a voice from
another leaf. Sammy frantically
scurried to the edge of the leaf and
dove under the leaf.
14
“Wow that was close! Don’t you
know to hide from crows?” scolded
Lily. Lily was another caterpillar,
just a little bigger that Sammy.
15
“Th—th—thanks” whispered Sammy.
He crawled over to Lily’s leaf. “My
name is Sammy,” he said and stuck
out all his legs to shake hands with
Lily. “I’m Lily,” she said. “It’s nice to
have a friend.”
