Christina Hall & Shannon Quigley

we Need it??

I know the Chapter Achievement form, which lists 30+different items that qualify as chapter achievement points,is very overwhelming. Well...let's break it down...first...thename Chapter Achievement. As you know, SCCoLPA isa member aka Chapter of LSI and in order to getmembers involved in their local Associations and LSI, theChapter Achievement program was created.

Second ...the Chapter Achievement form. Just think ofthe form as the "Chores Chart" you had when you were young that was posted on the fridge. There were lots of different things you needed to accomplish on a daily, weekly or even monthlybasis. Each one of those tasks needed your attention or physical appearance or muscle toaccomplish. This is the same sort of concept that applies to the Chapter Achievement form.Write an article for the Legal Secretary magazine, attend a Conference, become a member of aLSS (Legal Specialization Section) section/sections, purchase one of the legal referencepublications and the list goes on!!!! Some of the items only need your attention once, othersneed your attention or physical appearance monthly. Don't be overwhelmed with the form/list,just take a moment to look it over and let me know if you have any questions or need anyclarification.

Last, Chapter (or Association) Achievement...Why?? It is a way for members to get involvedwith LSI and SCCoLPA. The more Chapter Achievement points our Association gathers, themore we are participating, gathering knowledge, and networking with LSI, SCCoLPA and ourneighboring Associations. At the Annual Conference in May there is a contest where all of theAssociations fill out a form listing all of the points which have been gathered throughout theyear. The contest is always fun, but is just the icing on the cake. All the important activities youparticipate in during the fiscal year are the important aspects of Chapter Achievement. So give that Chapter Achievement form a look see with different eyes. I hope now you have abetter understanding of the "Why" and "What for" of Chapter Achievement and will think ofparticipating in SCCoLPA and LSI on a different level.

Until next time...... Linda Neuman, the proud Governor of SCCoLPA.

Member in the Spotlight August 2016 ~ by Shannon Quigley, SCCoLPA VP ofMembership

Who knew our August spotlight member would behonoring one of our newest members? That's right, wehave elected to honor our Advertising Chair, ChristinaHall! Christina joined SCCoLPA in 2015 and quicklybecame involved by immersing herself into all thatSCCoLPA and LSI has to offer and we all think she isdoing it quite well.

Christina has been to an LSI conference and attended almost every workshop offered, whilenetworking and having some fun all in a short weekend getaway. She has hit the groundrunning when she put her "Advertising Chair" hat on and she hasn't looked back. Christina isalways smiling and full of energy, has great ideas and is just plain enjoyable to be around.

With that in mind, let me tell you a little more about her. Christina had a desire to become alibrarian since her love of research and writing kept her intrigued while she was still in highschool. One day, she decided to assist some of her friends with some research regardinglandlord/tenant issues and from that day forward, she figured out that she loved the legal field. She went on to receive her AS in Paralegal Studies, but to this day, she has always worked as

a legal assistant. She began her career in 2007, supporting criminal defense attorneys. Sheenjoys the variety of her daytoday job duties at her current firm, and loves being able to helppeople get a second chance. Christina is a firm believer that just because someone makes amistake, does not mean that they should necessarily spend the rest of their life paying for it.

The best part is yet to come as we wish Christina good luck as she prepares for and takes theCalifornia Certified Legal Secretary exam this October. This exam is basically the equivalent totaking the bar exam to become an attorney. There are many reasons one would undertakesuch a huge commitment and daunting task, but for Christina, it's about keeping her skills fresh, learn about other areas of the law and looking to become an even better asset to the law firm.

SCCoLPA is very proud to congratulate Christina as our August Spotlight Member. Please besure to congratulate her the next time you attend a meeting or an event!

~ by Elena Schneider, CCLS, SCCoLPA Parliamentarian What is a class action?

When a group of people is affected by a matter of possible legal consequence, on or more ofthe group's members may file suit or be sued as the representatives of the "class." In mostcases, if the court permits the lawsuit, all members of the original "class" must be given theopportunity to exclude themselves, in case they've had second thoughts or reconsidered aseparate legal strategy. If they choose not to exclude themselves from the "class," they arebound by the final judgment in the case, whether it goes for or against them. A class actionlawsuit can be brought in all federal courts and some state courts, and has proven an effectiveweapon in civil rights, public health, and environmental cases. It has also been used, with lesssuccess, by stockholders against failing or bankrupt enterprises that either misled them oroffered false information to entice them to invest.

I'M A CCLS! WHAT HAS IT DONE FOR ME? ~ by April Ignaitis, CCLS, SCCoLPA Treasurer Since becoming a CCLS in March 2015, it has impacted by personal life and professionalcareer in many ways. I became the first CCLS in my office. At first, I didn't know what a CCLSwas until I became more involved in SCCoLPA and attended my first annual conference. At theannual conference, I attended a CCLS luncheon honoring and recognizing those that recentlypassed the 8 hour, allday exam. I heard the stories and struggles of each of them, and it wasat that moment that a light turned on. I made a goal that the following year at this time, this iswhere I wanted to be. I took the plunge and signed up to take (and pass) the March exam. Iconvinced my office manager to purchase the LOPM for our office, and explained/ educated herand others on what a CCLS was. I support three heavy civil litigators and they were all verysupportive of my endeavor. I studied hard, and at times, had my doubts and fear of failure andasked myself what I got myself into. I was then reminded that no one said it would be easy, because if it was, then everyone would be doing it.

But through prayer, faith and support from family and friends at SCCoLPA, I made it through. The journey was tough, but it taught me that no goal, no dream is out of reach, no matter howfar out there it may seem. It also taught me to have faith in the One that always has my back. The trials and storms of this journey we call life makes us stronger and gives us confidence todream even bigger. Since becoming a CCLS, I have received recognition at my job, andconfidence in my abilities. It has also impacted my personal life by giving me confidence toexplore and try new things. I have since become more involved with SCCoLPA by becomingyour Treasurer and Ways & Means Chair. I recently became a new member of the CCLSCertifying Board at the state level as well, and who knows, maybe.....

So, if you are on the fence, I urge you to take the plunge and try. Life is short, but the journey isexciting.
