Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Victoria Park for this NWCFL encounter with our friends from Daisy Hill. The visitors started the season like a house on fire, being in the top 5 for the first month with our very own Sakeel Abdullah pulling up trees before his move to the Admirals in October. The loss of Sakeel plus Craig Farnworth going to 1874 seemed to start the downturn of form and they currently prop up the form table having lost their last 7 in a row. Tuesday night stopped our own am azing run of 7 straight wins when we fell at the quarter final stage to AFC Fylde. A plucky performance against a strong side three tiers better off was not enough to drag us through. So now we are left in two competitions, the league and the league cup. There has been several fixture changes of late, these are represented in the fixture/results section in the centre pages of the programme. As always hot and cold food is available from the bar along with a selection of alcoholic and soft drinks. Can I take this opportunity to remind people that alcohol can only be consumed in the bar.

Good Afternoon….. I’d forgotten the hollow feeling a defeat brings until Tuesday night, it doesn't matter who we’re playing, we’ve set our standards high and I was really disappointed with our application in the 2nd half. We proba-bly gave Fylde a real scare, but the long and short of it is we’re not in the draw for the semi-final…. But we move on, hopefully we learn and we right some of the wrong in our performance from Tuesday night today, it still left me with a sleepless night. What Fylde did allow us to do was see how a football club can progress quickly, have infrastructure can be developed. I know Fayyaz was keen to look at how they had developed their stadium as we look at the medium and long term future of the club. We know that success on the pitch will mean that we have to secure investment in Victoria Park, I think the site has great potential and we are looking at projects to cover at least one additional side to the ground with terracing for supporters. The Chairman will be resurrecting his column next weekend to give his view on progress. We have three important games left in 2013, today we have to ensure we do a professional job, both Chadderton and Northwich Flixton Villa are recent reminders that if we are not on our game today we could drop points. That leaves us with Formby here next weekend and a tough Boxing Day visit to Rakesmoor Lane to face Holker.

The Gaffer...

Formby are the best team in this league bar us in my opinion, they have significant games in hand and will be in the mix come April, but if we ap-ply ourselves as we did last weekend against 1874 it would be a huge step towards promotion. Holker on Boxing Day will also be very hard, they are much improved this season and although its like a home game for me as I’m a Barrow lad, for our boys it’s a long trip that we need to prepare for correctly, Christmas is therefore only a half day event for the lads this year, they’re lucky I’ve not got them in for training on the 25th. Player wise we’re pretty settled at the moment, Matty O’Neill has brought experience and quality with him from Nantwich and he will help bring on some of the younger players who are doing a good job at giving us different options from the bench. I’m getting a lot of enquiries from players about getting onboard, that’s a by-product of success, people are taking note of our progress and many want to be involved. As I’ve often said, bringing players in now is fine, but they have to be of the standard to take us up not this division, but the one above. The lads are heading out on their Christmas party tonight, so anyone planning on going to Leeds tonight is warned otherwise. I’m sure you will all join them in the bar after the game for a drink. Enjoy the game

CLUB HISTORY Situated one and a half miles south of Westhoughton town centre and around four miles from Bolton, the village of Daisy Hill first saw football in season 1894-95 although it is possible that football was being played in the area for some years prior to that date. The first known honours for the club came in 1896-97 when the Wigan and District League Championship and the Westhoughton Cup were won without losing a match. The location of the clubs ground in those days is unknown but the present ground was used during the 1st World War period when the club played in the Leigh and District Senior Sunday School League. The club then joined the Westhoughton League and during the 1920’s and 1930’s won many honours in what was one of the strongest local leagues at the time. Notable play-ers included Dick Pollard and Billy Farrimond, both of whom also went on to play cricket for Lancashire. Alf Watkinson, grandfather of the former Lancashire Cricket Club captain Mike Watkinson went on to sign for Blackpool and Tommy Woodward (Bolton Wanderers and Middlesbrough) also had a number of games for the club.

Little is known of the period leading up to the 2nd world war but the club re-formed in 1951 playing in the Westhoughton League on the St. James Street Recreation Ground/Cricket Ground until the landowner made an offer to the club to return to New Sirs in 1957. The acquisition of the lease was a major step forward and gave aspiration to move into the Bolton Combination and develop into one of the most formidable clubs in the area. Dressing rooms were erected at the ground for the start of the 1968/69 season while on the field the club won the Bolton Combination Premier Division on four occasions, the Bolton Combination Cup on four occasions and the Lancashire Amateur Shield twice during the 60’s and 70’s. In 1978 the Club was accepted into the Lancashire Football Combination, and with the advent of the Non-League football pyramid and the subsequent amalgamation of the Lancashire Football Combination and the Cheshire County League the Club became a founder member of the North West Counties League giving them the opportunity to play in and bring national competition to the village. With the new pyramid set up requiring clubs to meet new standards for facilities, new dressing rooms and a clubhouse for social activities were erected at New Sirs in 1982. Since then ement of the clubs facilities has been ongoing and for the 2005-2006 season a floodlighting system has been installed which has allowed the club to remain in the National League System and return to National and County competitions.

Nelson booked their place in the 2nd round of the Division 1 Challenge Cup with a comfortable 3-0 win away at Daisy Hill. The Blues gave a debut to Lydon Hodgkiss at left back and recalled Brandon Barski, Jake Lloyd and Michael Morrison to the starting 11. With heavy rain before the game, and on the horizon for during, the Daisy Hill ground staff had done an excellent job in providing an excellent playing surface and Nelson took full advantage with some excellent early attacking play. The Admirals took a deserved lead on 26 minutes, Brandon Barski latching onto a through ball from Ben Hoskin to slide his shot under the despairing dive of Steve Whittle in the Daisy Hill goal. 5 minutes later the lead was doubled, as the rain began to fall, Ben Hoskin picked the ball up 35 yards from goal, drove inside and let fly with a stunning effort that beat the keeper all ends up. Further chances fell from Robert Grimes who hit the post, Sakeel Abdullah who had an effort saved, and Richie Allen who rattled the crossbar. It was all one way traffic for the first period with Ben Woodhead generally a spectator throughout. The second period saw a slightly more even encounter, with Daisy Hill getting their fair share of possession, the real talking point however was the weather, a deluge for 20 minutes during the half left players unable to see due to the horizontal rain and one stage. Lightening regularly lit up the ground, and there was time for a spark in terms of the last goal of the game, Nelson’s captain Robert Grimes leaving 3 defenders in his wake before lifting the ball over Whittle and into the roof of the net, a wonderful goal to cap a solid and professional performance for the Blues.

In other league news, the local sides are suffering mixed fortunes in the NWCFL Premier Division. Colne are 8th after an away win at St Helens last weekend, Barnoldswick Town are 11th after a draw at basement club Wigan Robin Park and Bacup & Rossendale Borough sit precariously in 20th. Padiham remain 17th in the Evo-Stick Division 1, 6 points clear of the drop zone. The one remaining NWCFL team in the FA Vase, Congleton Town, have a 4th round draw away at Newcastle Benfield of the Northern League. Benfield overcame Nelson’s victors Jarrow in the previous round. Nelson Bow Out of LFA Cup

AFC Fylde 3 - 1 Nelson FC

Tuesday 10th December 2013

Admirals Drowned by the Coast

Nelson bowed out of the LFA Challenge Trophy after a 3-2 defeat at AFC Fylde in a pulsating cup tie. The Blues welcomed back Robert Grimes and Ritchie Allen to the starting line up, the latter returning to Kellamergh Park, his former stomping ground.

A fast start has been a feature of Nelson’s season so far, but on this occasion it was the Coasters who were quickest out of the blocks, a dubious freekick given against Daniel Finch within the first minute, and despite two failed attempts to clear the danger from the resulting cross, Fylde skipper Joe Booth popped up in the area and smashed a drive past Ben Woodhead to give Fylde an early lead.

Nelson needed a response, and skipper Robert Grimes duly applied as he exploded onto a miss hit Hinchcliffe clearance, burst into space 30 yards from goal and with options either side he strode on with the ball before unleashing a rocket past the despairing dive of the Fylde keeper to level the scores with 7 minutes on the clock. And now the Blues looked the more likely, exploiting large spaces in the midfield and O’Neill, Allen, and Wright becoming more prominent, indeed it was an Allen cross on 13 minutes that nearly saw Wright latch onto, but it was cleared by Russell for a corner which came to nothing. Two minutes later Allen was at it again, a surging run teed up O’Neill who’s cross was onto the head of Wright, but the Nelson strikers effort was wide of the post.

On 25 minutes came the first of two penalty appeals for the Admirals,

both turned down by the official, on this occasion it appeared to be a

handball from Russell inside the box but nothing doing from the ref.

Page 17: THE ADMIRAL - Pitcherofiles.pitchero.com/clubs/21899/NelsonvDaisyHillProgramme.pdf · 2013. 12. 15. · The Admiral—Editor. Keep up to date with all things Nelson FC by visiting

And Nelson would be made to pay for not taking their chances on 34 minutes, another case of not dealing with the loose ball from the Blues and Accrington Stanley loanee Marcus Carver was on hand to poke the ball home. With the momentum now swinging in Fylde’s favour, the Blues were indebted to Ben Woodhead who made a world class reaction save from Carver on 38 minutes. Then Nelson turned to their talismanic front man Allen to bring them level, just before half time he picked up the ball 25 yards from goal and curled a low fizzing shot that took a slight deflection and nestled in the corner of the net, queue no celebration from Allen who seemed almost embarrassed to score against his former club.

HT AFC Fylde 2 – 2 Nelson FC

The second period saw the Blues immediately on the attack with initially O’Neill, then Allen going close, but the sucker punch came at the other end. A well worked Fylde corner caused mayhem in the penalty area and as Nelson failed to clear it was that man Carver again who poked the ball home from 4 yards to put Fylde back in front.

The Blues could have been further behind if it wasn’t for Woodhead who produced another fine save on 61 minutes, this time from Dorney’s effort, and on 69 minutes the ex-Burnley stopper prevented Carver from getting his hat-trick, the rebound fell to Blinkhorn who shot over.

At the other end Nelson continued to cause problems on the break, Russell doing well to marshal Allen on 71 minutes, and the Fylde wall standing first to block a free kick on 75. Another penalty should was turned down on 81 minutes when Wright was felled in the area and late chances were squandered by Adnan Ahmed and Ben Hoskin as Nelson looked to snatch an equaliser, but in the end Fylde had done enough in an entertaining game.

Nelson: Woodhead, Hoskin, Finch, Melling, Hodgkiss, Ahmed (Lloyd, 81), Grimes, Barski (Abdullah, 60), O’Neill, Allen, Wright.

The Best of Nelson

On the 14th December 1946, my dad took me to watch Nelson play Leyland Motors in the Lancashire Combination. He had just returned home after serving in the Royal Engineers in the Far East and it was my first football match. I remember it well, I don’t remember much about what happened a month ago but I remember my first ever football match even though it was 67 years ago!

Nelson’s team that day was :- Bentley, Eastwood, Rotherham, Pickering, Watson, Crossland, Wood, Waddington, Walton, Wild , and it was a 3-3 draw. From that day forward, Nelson began to build a team of players deemed ‘past their best’ by their football league clubs. Ted Wigglesworth arrived from Burnley and Jimmy Ward from Manchester United. Then came Cyril Coyne from Leeds United and Tommy McManus from Blackburn Rovers. They were magnificent players whose careers had been thwarted by the war. Walter Marvin came from somewhere – I don’t remember where – but ‘bullet head’, as he became better known, was a terrific header of the ball and scored regularly with headers from corners.

Nelson really became a force to be reckoned with when the board engaged Bob Johnson, formerly of Burnley, as player-manager. His first signing was Jack Webber, who had been discarded by Blackburn Rovers, and Nelson’s regular eleven for that 1949/50 season was :- Tattersall, Wigglesworth, Thompson, Coates, Johnson, Coyne, Woodhead, Ward, Webber, Burns, McManus. Nelson won the Combination Championship by 6 points from Wigan Athletic, scoring 125 goals in 42 matches. In-cluding cup ties, Webber played in 53 games scoring 43 goals. Ward and McManus scored 26 each whilst Burns netted 20, Coyne even got 15 from centre half.

Nelson lost the championship the next year on goal average. If goal difference had been the rule, then Nelson would have retained the title. Wigan’s record was 90 for and 43 against whereas Nelson was 120 for and 64 against. Webber’s tally this term was 47 goals. An outstanding F.A Cup run saw Nelson reach the 2nd round before narrowly losing 3-2 to Port Vale (Who went on to be 3rd division champions). Bob Johnson retired and Joe Fagan was appointed to take over for the 51/52 season, a move that brought further success to the club. The league title was retained by a clear 8 points and 139 goals were scored. Webber hit 42, Ward 38 with 25 coming from Arthur Cowell, another discard from Blackburn Rovers.

It’s a great pity there was no Conference in those days as Nelson would probably have won their way back into the football league. As it was, they had to rely on persuading other clubs to vote them in but they had to contend with Burnley who were opposed to another Lancashire club joining the ranks. They say you shouldn’t hold a grudge but I’m afraid I do! Burnley will never have my support! By Derek Metcalfe

Jack Brooks

A former Accrington Stanley youngster, Jack came to the club in pre-season and instantly caught the eye of the first team management. The tough tackling 16 year old showed maturity beyond his years and after impressing in pre-season made his Nelson debut of the opening day of the season against Leek CSOB at right back. Since

then Jack’s development has been further supported by 6 starts in the 1st team and 5 appearances from the bench. A player with a

great future and certainly one to keep an eye on.

A win and a loss for Development Squad The Development Squad travelled to Thackley as the 1st team were beating 1874 Northwich at Vicotria Park. In dismal conditions at The Dennyfield, Sam Heap’s men were caught cold by a late Thackley goal that settled the tie. On Thursday night the second string went to Garforth, unfortunate-ly losing the game 4-1 with a series of bookings and a sending off to boot. Defeat leaves the Development squad 7th in the Lancashire League East table. Their next game is at Victoria Park on Thurs-day 2nd January—19:45 KO. Youth Staff Changes The youth team have undergone some change in the last week, Phil Cain has left the club as Youth Head Coach with club Chair-man Fayyaz Ahmed taking over the reigns for the game at Burnley Belvedere tomorrow. The game kicks off at 13:00 at Holden Road if any supporters wish to have a look at the next generation of Nel-son players. We have also started recruitment for our 2014/15 youth scholarship programme. We have 18 available places for the new season with trials starting in February. The History Boys

Season 2005/06

The 2005/06 season was the last time Nelson were promoted

from the second tier of the North West Counties League.

Former Blackburn Rovers coach David Hall took over the manager's role at the start of the 2004/05 season, and set about rebuilding a fresh young team. But Hall was to leave

after a poor start to the following season, and his assistant Graham Howarth (pictured below) took over and oversaw an incredible late run which propelled the Blues to a third place finish,

bringing with it a first promotion for the Club for 83 years.

The re-structuring of non-league at the end of that season meant that 3 teams went from the NWCFL Premier Division into the Unibond League, leaving three free spaces in that league. The gap meant there was three promoted from the First Division, giving the Admirals

step 5 football in 2006/07.

In the FA Vase Nelson got through the 2nd qualifying round with a 2-1 home win over promotion rivals Flixton, then beat Daisy Hill away from home by single goal to progress into the 2nd round proper. But that was to be as far as the Admirals went, losing 1-0 at home

to Ashville, who now play in the Cheshire League.

The Nelson squad at the time included a young Billy Carrington and current Barnoldswick Town boss Kevin Richardson. Michael Holt (pictured) was not only the Admirals top scorer, but also the leagues leading marksman, the former Bamber Bridge, Accrington Stanley and Padiham man scored 33 goals

in all competitions.

The Admirals went on to play four season’s in the Premier Division with a highest finish of 17th place before the club resigned from the league is 2010. The club returned in its current

structure to the NWCFL in August 2011.
