THE ADMINISTRATIVE PALACE OF SATU MARE

A SHORT HISTORY

The history of the building starts in the 1960s, when Satu Mare experienced a period of infrastructure development under the communist regime.

The Romanian Communist Party wanted to build a new city center with a building that would be a new landmark for the city.

The construction of the building began in 1972, the main architect being Nicolae Porumbescu of Iaşi, assisted by Ludovic Gyüre of Satu Mare.

The building was completed in 1984; there were over 1,000 workers employed on the project

DESCRIPTION AND OTHER TECHNICAL

INFORMATION

• The Administrative Palace of Satu Mare is the fourth highest building in Romania, and the highest administrative building in the country. It's an example of brutalist style architecture;

• It's height is 97 meters;

• It has 18 floors;

Over the last floor there is an amphitheater that offers a panoramic view of the entire city.

From tere you can see how the Somes divides the city into two, on the right is seated the old town and on the left districts Micro 14, 15, 16 and 17.

The building has three smaller towers and one big main tower. The three small towers represent the three ethnic groups present in Satu Mare County: Romanians, Germans and Hungarians, while the main tower represents the bond between these three ethnic groups.

BRUTALIST STYLE ARCHITECTURE

• Brutalist architecture is a style of architecture that flourished from the 1950s to the mid-1970s, spawned from the modernist architectural movement.

• Examples are typically very linear, fortress-like and blockish, often with a predominance of concrete construction.

Initially the style came about for government buildings, low-rent housing and shopping centers to create functional structures at a low cost, but eventually designers adopted the look for other uses such as college buildings.
