CAN THINGS REALLY GET BETTER ?

This is us today –

It all started late in March and many of our members and users had to cancel their bookings. Our rooms became very

empty for most of the week, when only those groups that were exempt from the restrictions could continue in our

specially prepared Covid-19 safe building. Things improved in the Autumn and several groups returned when

restrictions were relaxed. We found a new enthusiasm and the Café was opened for 2 hours every weekday. Things

were looking up.

Now we are back in lockdown and elevated to Tier 4. What now ?

“Tomorrow will be a good day”

Stay upbeat everyone - the vaccines are here – we will come through this. Our Community Centre is ready for

us…it’s smarter than ever. But check availability with your organisers.

We will party when it’s all over and you are all invited.

Be sensible and Stay Safe.

Ian Lee - Chairman

Editorial

It’s a smaller edition than usual; and we’re back to digital only…for safety. I’ve been nagging and cajoling

contributors all year, through lockdown and relaxation and further lockdowns…and, although there’s so little

news to go around, they’ve responded brilliantly. Thank you all for your articles and photos. Please keep them

coming in 2021.

Captain Sir Tom Moore experienced many more

problems in his time; and, at the age of 100, he still has so

much enthusiasm for life.

It’s not been easy to stay upbeat and enthusiastic this past

few months but as Sir Tom says “Tomorrow will be a

good day”

KEEP FIT

It's now the 1st of December and we are finally emerging from our latest lockdown ready for life in Tier 2. No

Keep Fit classes were possible for the month of November which was so disappointing after just getting going

again. We will have no more classes until 2021 when we start back on Wednesday 6th January at 7.30pm (Covid

permitting). If you'd like to come along and 'move to the groove' then we'd love to see you. Remember 'motion is

lotion' for your joints. Please call Carol on 01932 566507 to book your place as space is limited (and to check

Centre is available…Editor). Wishing a very Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year to you all.

Gillian Ford

TANGENT BADMINTON

A Tangential Bird in a Pear Tree

Is that my bird atop the tree

with feathers flexed awaiting me

to coax it down to meet the crew

who likewise want to stroke it too?

I hate to think what bade it hence

when all around sat in a fence

so high we could not keep it's view

or coax it down from where it flew.

Despite attempts to tempt it here,

big birds said "no" and gave it fear.

And so the fear proved far too strong

for it to fly and join our throng.

With summer sun the call grew strong

And some brave birds came out to play.

Ours even flapped and beat its wings

And puffed its chest and sang it's song.

But Autumn storms brought in the cold

and stopped the play of those, so bold,

who played despite the growing gloom

of those who lived a life in Zoom.

With summer sun a distant past

the fear did rise again, at last,

and brought forth bubbles which, despite their name,

could not be chased or made a game.

Still, time will tell as times they must

to give all hope and instil trust

that all's not lost so we may try

to tease it down once more to fly.

And so we wait for festive cheer to raise spirits for the coming year.

When needles raise our joy from pain and our bird can fly to us again.

Merry Christmas and a Happy Avian New Year.

ADDLESTONE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Station Road, Addlestone, looking East. Circa 1900

Throughout the pandemic, our editor, Rosemary Hughesdon, has continued to produce richly diverse newsletters,

and a team of helpers has ensured delivery to our members. It means that we can indulge our interest in local

history even though we can't yet meet in person. Nevertheless, she is running out of subject matter, particularly as

there are no speaker's topics on which to report.

This is where I'm asking for HELP!

If, like me, the last few months have given you time to sort out cupboards and drawers perhaps you have come

across memories or photographs of Addlestone's past. If you would be happy to share them with us, Rosemary

would be delighted to hear from you, whether or not you are a member of our society. She can be contacted

(preferably by email to [email protected]) or on 01932 846428.

With news of a vaccine and the trumping of Trump, perhaps things are looking up for 2021!

THE ADDLESTONE SINGERS

Normally at this time of year, we would be putting the final touches to our Christmas Concert programme on

behalf of a local charity. As with so many groups and organisations, our plans have had to be cancelled, along

with our seasonal visits to various care homes in the area. As we all enjoy singing Christmas carols (some with

audience participation) and music to the residents, we feel sad that it has not been possible to make any visits.

Looking forward into next year, we are hoping to commence our Spring Term rehearsals in the Tulk Hall from

8.00-9.45pm on 4th January, 2021. As ever, these plans are by no means certain and will depend on current

restrictions at the time. However, if a new choral hobby appeals for the New Year, we would welcome enquiries

from any ladies who would like to join us. There is no audition or requirement to read music, just a love of

singing. We are a friendly bunch and in better times have enjoyed many social occasions.

For up-to-date information on our activities and plans, please visit our NEW website at

www.addlestonesingers.tumblr.com or give Lesley a call on 07899 066963.

Once again Woking Lions, in conjunction with Citizens Advice offices, are renewing their

winter appeal.

DO YOU NEED YOUR GOVERNMENT WINTER FUEL ALLOWANCE FOR 2020 ?

IF NOT WE CAN USE IT TO HELP THOSE IN FUEL POVERTY.

This year in particular many local people will not qualify to get help and struggle to keep warm and meet fuel bills.

appreciated. Please submit on line at virginmoneygiving.com/fund/Wenceslas2020.

Alternatively, cheques made payable to Woking Lions Club can be posted or hand delivered to Citizens Advice

Woking, Provincial House, 26 Commercial Way, Woking GU21 6EN or to Citizens Advice Runnymede, The Old
