St. Gregory the Great

Mission Statement

St. Gregory the Great is a Catholic Church made up of people of many different ages, talents, and cultural backgrounds. We are an urban faith community with a small town feel of welcome and hospitality. Motivated by our baptismal calling, we accept our duty to embody the presence of Jesus Christ in the world and to take up the mission he entrusted to us by our word and example.

We glorify God through support and service of our time, talent, and treasure to our church and to the larger community in which we live.

KNOW THE MASS, ONE WORD AT A TIME

See

When we celebrate Sunday Mass, we engage all our senses. We hear the Mass. We speak and sing the Mass.

We touch the Body of Christ. And, in a special way, we see the Mass. We see the movements of the ritual. At

certain moments, the priest highlights the visual part of the Mass. At the consecration, he holds up the host

and chalice so that we can see it. Just before Holy Communion, he again holds up the host and says, “Behold

the Lamb of God,” “See the Lamb of God whom you will receive.”

As significant as our seeing at Mass is, it is only a glimpse and a hint of the great destiny that awaits us. In

the First Letter of John, we read: “Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been

revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is” (1

John 3:2). Here on earth at Mass begins our deepest hope and our promised destiny—to see God face to face.

Jesus speaks in the Gospel about losing our lives to save them.

What enables me to give myself up to God? How does Jesus’ surrender (“This is my body given up for you”) help me to learn the path of surrender that I must take?

A WALK THROUGH THE MASS—THE LORD’S PRAYER

This is the prayer that unites ALL Christians, the prayer that Christ gave us. Before we share in the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation, we recognize that our daily bread comes from God.

To continue this city's great choral tradition Locally Grown will feature THREE world premieres by emerging composers Elizabeth Lim (Clark Street Bridge- WPCS Call for Scores contest winner), Edward F. Davis (Sanctus), and Eric Malmquist (On the Breakwater).
