4PM~Ranch T-Top

Can you believe it? The year has flown by so fast and it is time for the 3rd annual Member Ap-

out on a great time and a great meal. Cloud 9 Ranch will be providing The Hog with baked

beans, fried potatoes, corn and ice tea. Members are asked to bring one of the following items:

side dish, sodas, dessert, dinner rolls. Ya’ll come out and enjoy!

The “Witches Brew” Family ATV Party will be held after the Hog Roast. This is a first time

T-Top each ATV will be given a list of places that they must visit. These visits can be made in

any order. At each location you will be given a clue list and a door prize ticket. After you have

collected each of your clue lists, you are ready to begin hunting for witches. If you find a

witch, pumpkin, black cat, etc. collect the item to bring back to the T-Top with you. But before

you return... Some of these items will give the location to where the Witches make their Brew.

So before you return to the T-Top, come by & see what the “Witches” have brewed up for you.

Now remember, you are suppose to collect the items that you find, they could prove to be very

valuable when you return to the T-Top. Participants need to be back at the T-Top at 10PM so

you can see just how good your Witch Hunt went for you. Happy Hunting!

The Rest of the story~

Campfires, Hoodies, Blue jeans, Boots, & Smore’s

IT IS OCTOBER!!!

I have waited the whole year for October to come again. I love

the cool nights and the ability to turn off that air conditioner in

your camper and open up the windows and hear the sounds of

nature around you. Ok you have the occasional ATV, but it is all

good.

I love the ability to serve soup. My favorite is twice bake potato

soup or Paula Dean’s Brisbom Stew!!! Pumpkins, squash, cook-

ies and pies!!! I am one of the lucky ones (except for my waist

line), as I still have a mother that loves to bake and this time of

the year there are always cookies and pies in our house. I came

home from the ranch last night with a batch of snicker doodles

sitting on the counter!! I love sitting around a campfire with

friends discussing the summer or the months to come. Love

watching the deer hunters get all excited for their day to come or

the day that they just had. Football games, FFA benefits, Colum-

bus Day, Festivals, and to end the month Halloween, it is all good

because it is October.

October this year has an even bigger meaning to me and the

Budget Committee, because October means the end of the budget

process. This year the budget preparation has had its ups and

downs, but we should be putting on the finishing touches this

week and getting it out to the members by the 15th at the latest. I

apologize that the budget is going to be put out 15 days late. But

the window of time given does not leave a lot of wiggle room.

As soon as the 2013 budget is put to bed, we will be appointing a

new budget committee to start on 2014. Not going to let grass

grow under our feet this next year!!! I hope that all of you take

time and read the budget and the accompanying attachments and

if you have any questions, I hope that you will contact one of the

budget committee members. We may not be perfect, but I do be-

lieve the processes that have been put in place for 2013 will only

benefit budgets and financials in the future.

Now back to October. I don’t want to wish my favorite month to

end, but I am so getting excited for the Frantic Fall Festival. I

will wake up and go on the Fall Foliage Horse Ride. I had a great

time this past spring; so I guess I will do it again. I can’t wait to

decorate the outside of my camper for the children to come trick

or treating. I love seeing their costumes and the smiling faces as

they ride on the hayride from campsite to campsite. Then the hog

roast, last year the food was so good. I may have to take my plate

to go this year, because I will be helping with Witches Brew ATV

Party. October 27th is a day that is a must to be at the ranch, I

know I will be busy, but I can’t wait to see all of you there!!! All

the campgrounds are still open and I am looking forward to a

crowd.

Well October doesn’t have to be the end of the camping season.

October brings in the best of all seasons. Long live October!!!

Campfire Nights!

There is nothing better than a nice campfire on these cool evenings at the Ranch. Many of the campsites have rock fire rings for your convince. If your site does not have a fire ring available, feel free to use one of common area fire rings that are located in each camp-ground. If you have questions about a spe-cific location, be sure to check with the ranger staff. Portable fire pits are permitted at each campsite. So you are more than welcome to set your portable, raised pit up at your campsite. For your convince, there is firewood for sale at the gatehouse if you prefer this method to gather wood for your fire!

Helpful Camping Tips

Take this simple test to see

if you qualify for solo camping.

Shine a flashlight into one ear.

If the beam shines out the other

ear, do not go into the woods

alone.

Get even with a bear who

raided your food bag by kicking

his favorite stump apart and

eating all the ants.

Lint from your navel makes

a handy fire starter. Warning:

Remove lint from navel before

applying the match.

When camping, always

wear a long-sleeved shirt. It

gives you something to wipe

your nose on.

A potato baked in the coals

for one hour makes an excel-

lent side dish. A potato baked

in the coals for three hours

makes an excellent hockey

puck.

The guitar of the noisy

teenager at the next campsite

makes excellent kindling.

Bear bells provide an ele-

ment of safety for hikers in bear

country. The tricky part is get-

ting them on the bears.

A great deal of hostility can

be released by using newspa-

per photos of politicians for toi-

let paper.

In an emergency, a draw-

string from a parka hood can be

used to strangle a snoring tent

mate.

Why would anybody want

to go camping in the woods?

Everything out there will either

eat you, bite you, or give you a

rash.

State parks—that’s where

there are more things that you

can’t do than you can do.

A two-man pup tent does

not include two men or a pup.

People, planning and participation

The best events on Cloud 9 Ranch are when people who work

well together plan events for other to participate in. These

types of events are almost always Ranch fundraisers for a good

cause. All involved, whether planning or participating, are

winners because the benefits received go right back into Cloud

9 Ranch. One of these events that have been proven on both

levels, people working together for people to participate in to-

gether, is Casino Night. Over the last two years, Casino Night

has been held during holiday weekends when it was the hope

that there would be a high participation, thereby bringing in

the highest amount of contributions that can be made to the

Ranch for specific projects.

Casino Night is a club event that is open to the entire

membership. The Cloud 9 Cruisers plan the event, and many

people not club members help with the event. It is held in the

Clubhouse where “casino” type games are played with Cruiser

Cash which you receive when you pay a $10 donation at sign-

up. BUT THAT’S NOT ALL. From donations and club

dues, each Casino Night has approximately $1,000 in prizes,

which are all given away at a Cruiser Cash Auction held after

3 hours of playing the games and building your Cruiser Cash.

Casino Night is not only a fundraiser; it is a way for the

members of Cloud 9 Ranch to meet each other, to have a night

of fun for a nominal donation, to enjoy a chance to be a part of

something that is upbeat and doesn’t require anything but a

night where you can experience a network of friends working

together for the good of all.

The Cloud 9 Cruisers decided to try Casino Night at a

different time than a large holiday weekend. OCTOBER 6th

(Columbus Day weekend) will be a trial weekend to see if par-

ticipation will be as beneficial as it was during large holidays.

Another change is that there will be a Pirate Theme, wth a lot

of new ways to build your CRUISER $$$$. There will be a

PLINKO board, horseracing is also a favorite – more races,

more mystery drawings, AND A LIVE BAND that is ready to

take your requests. There will be food available and the

TEXAS HOLD’EM TOURNAMENT WILL HAVE A SES-

SION that Cruiser Cash will be awarded to those players.

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU AT THE CLUBHOUSE AROUND

7:00 P.M. ON OCTOBER 6TH –

THAT’S WHEN THE FUN BEGINS

A Little Something You Should Know…. Yep it’s October…& for many of our members, camping fun is just be-ginning. There is not a better time than fall to enjoy warm, dust free days out on the trails. Columbus weekend has a lot of folks out and about that share those same sentiments when it comes to this time of the year. One thing ATV riders should be aware of is the riding rules that apply to the various areas of the Ranch. Remember that there is a 10mph speed limit throughout all of the campgrounds. This is not only safe for the campers but also a courteous way to keep control of campground dust. Another courtesy & rule that you should remember, quiet hours begins at 12 Midnight and ends at 6am. Be considerate of campers by keeping your music turned down & avoid joy riding in the camp-grounds during the quiet hours. This is an easy way to see lots of happy campers in the morning!

Who is jim Crosby?

Jim Crosby, Gas Station Supervisor, is a senior em-

ployee with a lot of life to talk about. I’ll do my best in this

short article to tell his story and how he came to be an em-

ployee of Cloud 9 Ranch. Jim is an only child, born in

Chula Vista, CA on May 30, 1938, to T.A. & Patsy Hensley

Crosby. T.A. was in the Navy and served during WWII.

He was aboard the aircraft carrier Lexington when it sank

during the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942. Surviving the

battle, he returned to San Francisco. Jim can remember his

Daddy’s homecoming as his first real road trip in their 1941

Ford. Jim stood up by his mother driving the entire trip.

Jim’s parents were both from Arkansas and in 1950

they moved back. Jim loved Mountainburg, Arkansas,

where this city boy was quickly introduced to country life.

Jim said he was in “hog heaven.” Having a .22 and his own

horse, Jim hunted everything that moved in the woods.

That lasted three years, then a move to Kansas City had Jim enrolled in Wentworth Military

Academy at Lexington, MO. One of his best memories was in the summer of 1956. He got to

know former President Harry S. Truman while working a summer job as a parking attendant at

the Club Garage in Kansas City. President Truman parked in the garage almost daily and Jim

was his attendant. He remembers President Truman as a man with integrity who treated every-

one with respect. Several of these stories are worth hearing, so ask Jim to tell you more about

President Truman.

In 1956 Jim enrolled at the UofA-Fayetteville, but college life was short-lived. Jim de-

cided to join the Navy and told his friends. Six college buddies convinced him to go with them

the next day to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corps together. He did and then married a Marine

while serving 4 ½ “uneventful” years during peacetime from 1957 to 1961. When discharged,

Jim landed back in Kansas City. He has three children from that marriage, worked 30 years at

Western Electric, retiring in 1991. But he didn’t stop working. After being hired by a salvage

company who bought and disassembled the General Motors Leeds Plant, he then managed the

Leeds Industrial Park near Kansas City for seven years, which is still at that site today. At age

50, after a divorce, Jim began a fitness regime with running, tennis and cycling. At his chil-

dren’s insistence, Jim also kicked his smoking habit. Then Jim one day went on a blind date

with Danita, his wife now over 20 years. They founded the Rubber Duckies International Tour-

ing Team and participated in numerous MS-150 cycling tours that took them from Wichita, TX

to Grand Rapids, MI. During a biking tour, Jim and Danita were married in 1991, in Sedalia at

a log cabin at the Missouri State Fair. The reception was attended by 4,000 State Fairgo’ers.

The Rubber Duckies had a party they will never forget.

In 2004, Jim and Danita first learned of Cloud 9

Ranch as guests of family members and visited several

times, renting every size camper the Ranch had to of-

fer. Becoming members in 2005, Jim was offered a

Ranger position; the couple purchased a ‘79 Royals

International (which they still own), and became full-

time residents at Cloud 9. His first job as a Ranger

was running the gas station. Jim has seen several

managers come and go and his job titles changed over

the years. Many strange turn of events happen at

Cloud 9 when it comes to employees. Jim, Head

Ranger at one time hired Luke Long, who is now

Head Ranger and Jim’s supervisor. Jim’s job is a

small part of their life at Cloud 9, compared to his vol-

unteerism. He is a First Responder, Firefighter, Con-

servation Committee member, and a member of Cloud

9 Cruisers Club, which Jim says keeps him busy dur-

ing his spare time.

Ranch Rider News

Jim and Danita are members of The Promised Land

Church in West Plains and enjoy their church family and the

Cloud 9 life. With 8 children, 19 grandchildren and 2 great-

grandkids, their lives are very full. Well, and, of course, let’s not

forget the Pekingese, Minnie, who has her own swimming hole

named after her at Sheriff’s Hollow. Minnie “expects” daily rides

and sometimes goes to work with Jim.

Jim chuckled when asked how members can help him in

his job. “Show up earlier than 5 minutes before closing time

would help.” “Seriously,” Jim says, “the gas station is not like

where people come in and are obnoxious because their grass isn’t

cut. They get their gas and go. There’s always a few that want us

to make phone calls when something bothers them. That hasn’t

changed over the years.”

Jim’s big goal at Cloud 9 is a simple one. He said with a

laugh, “One day I want to see the fireworks display instead of be-

ing down there lighting them. I’ve never seen it.” He wants to

continue being useful as long as he is able and it doesn’t look like

he’s got plans to slow down. I do believe next year we should

arrange for Jim Crosby to enjoy the fireworks. We owe him that,

don’t ‘ya think?

Member Donation~

Being put to good Use

If you have had a chance to drive down Spring Hill Road in the

last few days, you may have noticed that we have a new addition

to the evening activities list. With Bow Season now open, a very

kind and generous member of Cloud 9 Ranch has donated new

archery targets. The yardage has been marked off at various dis-

tances from the targets. Members are welcome to come by and

do some practice shooting. Every evening this week, there has

been a few people using the new bow target bags. This donation

is greatly appreciated and there are many members who are truly

thankful for such a kind donation. The pictures on the left are of

Fall Just got Better!

Are you just not ready to end your season? Do you want the ability to come down to the ranch a few more

times or all through the winter, but don’t want the hassle of pull-

ing your camper to Cloud 9 or even pulling it out of the com-

pound?

Well at September’s Board Meeting the board passed a measure

where you can do just that.

Starting on October 1st and ending on April 15, 2013 you now

have the ability to leave your camper out sitting on a pad and in

an open campground (Melody and Lonesome will be open all

year) for just $2.00 a day without it being assessed towards your

30 days of camping (usage) while it just sits there.

This is all you have to do:

Place your camper on a pad in a campground that is open

Unplug your camper from the utility box

Inform the gate that you are leaving your camper on a

pad, but unplugged

t is that easy. Now you can come down to the ranch anytime and

not have to drag it out in the cold. All you will need to do is plug

It is Your responsibility to know!

Cloud 9 Ranch is a very beautiful place to ride ATV’s, camp, and

fish. With nearly 6500 acres, there is something for everyone to

do at Cloud 9 Ranch. Ranch members are encouraged to ride the

trails & explore the natural beauty that our Ranch encompasses.

With that task also comes the responsibility of the member to

know where you are on the property. The RRC has spent a great

amount if time & effort in producing C9R Trail maps. The maps

are a tool that every member should have readily available as they

explore the Ranch property. For your convenience the maps are

for sale in the Trading Post. As you enjoy your time at Cloud 9

Ranch, be aware that private landowners share fence lines with

the Ranch. Both Ranch Management and these Private Owners

want you, as members, to be aware that cutting fences and the

destruction of private property is against the law. Ranch Mem-

bers who trespass onto privately owned land can be prosecuted.

Surrounding property owners have reported to Ranch Officials

that fire rings have been built, trash (beer cans) have been left and

fences have been cut by Cloud 9 Members. One landowner has

also reported that since the spring of this year, nearly 2 miles of

ATV trails have been blazed on their privately held property. As

members, know where you are on the Ranch property, look for

purple marking paint to identify property lines and avoid all areas

that are marked with “NO TRESSPASSING” signs. The Ranch

has been blessed with neighbors that respect our private area, let’s

return the favor by respecting the rights of the surrounding prop-

erty owners as well.

Protecting Your investment

The new lake is finally coming together. The recent rain falls that the Ranch has been blessed

with are doing their part to contribute to the filling of the new lake.

With this rain fall comes the temptation of playing in the mud. If you are an ATV rider, then

you are in good company of those who love playing in the mud from time to time.

The new lake area is not the appropriate area for “Mudding”. Over the course of the last few

weeks, there have been several riders who have been joy riding around the pond bank and

newly constructed dam. Be aware, that this type of activity can and will cause damage to the

dam. If this happens, more time and money will have to be invested to repair the damage.

The Rangers have been instructed to patrol the area to help protect the dam and new lake.
