Brother Knights,

Summer has almost wound down; our schools are in full session and our seasonal brothers will soon be returning. We are planning on a busy upcoming year. At our August meeting, the Council voted to assist the Columbian Club in repairing and updating the council hall. As of this writing the a/c units have been repaired, the main hall has been painted, and new vinyl flooring has been added. Look for a further description of the repairs and updates from the Columbian Club.

September is the beginning of our active time and we start the preparation for the new year. Normally we begin with a youth Soccer Challenge, but we are still without a Youth Chairperson to handle this activity. Also, this month our new Caterer, Stacey Johnson, began full time activities at the Council Hall.

Our Council goals always comes down to our charitable donations and increasing our membership to help us in obtaining that goal. Goals cannot be achieved without the support from all our brothers. How can you be of assistance? We need callers, cooks, and card sale brothers for bingo. We need volunteers for our slam breakfasts that start in October, our Cove Road clean up, St Joseph’s annual Fall Festival, Thanksgiving Meal preparation for the needy, Breakfast with Santa, and many other events. Come to our meetings, get involved, and see all that we do. You will be surprised at the great feelings you will get from participating in the programs. See you at our next meeting or event.

Soccer Challenge A Higher Purpose Provide an athletic outlet for youth ages 9 to 14 in your community. Designed for players to demonstrate their skills in the penalty kick. Councils can sponsor a competition by ordering a Soccer Challenge Kit, or volunteer to host and/or support the district, regional and state/province championships. Overview The Soccer Challenge is a fun way for Knights of Columbus councils to engage youth in their communities with an athletic event that encourages the values of sportsmanship and healthy competition. Children demonstrate the most important skill in soccer – shooting accuracy on the penalty kick – and compete to reach the international level of competition. The program also offers an opportunity to introduce the Knights of Columbus to the community and recruit faithful family men of service. Action Steps

1. Order the Soccer Challenge Kit (#SC-KIT) through Supplies Online, the supply ordering portal available on Officers Online.

2. Set a date, location and time for the Soccer Challenge. If required by venue, acquire insurance. 3. Contact schools and youth centers to explain and promote the program. Suggest that the schools or youth centers

consider using this activity as part of their physical education classes. 4. Prior to the Soccer Challenge, use the sample press release as a model to create and distribute a tailored release to

local media. 5. Build public interest for the event! Promote the Soccer Challenge in your parish and larger community through a

variety of efforts: a. Prominently display promotional posters (found in the Soccer Challenge Kit (#SC-KIT)) b. Bulletin announcements c. Pulpit announcements d. Posting on your council and parish website / social media pages

6. Coordinate with the district and state/province leadership regarding date, time, and location of the next level of competition. On the day of the event, provide this information to the council-level winners.

7. Preregistration is recommended, but sometimes difficult to execute. 8. Hold the Soccer Challenge! Review the Soccer Challenge Playbook (#4576) for guidelines, volunteer requirements, and

other information. 9. On the day of the event, wear Knights of Columbus-branded apparel and have the council membership director set up

a table with brochures and membership documents (including Prospect Cards #921A). Do not forget that this event is a recruiting opportunity!

10. Enlist a fellow Knight or community member to photograph the event. 11. Following the Soccer Challenge, update the community on the success of your program by amending the Soccer

Challenge sample announcement and distributing it to local media, along with energizing photographs from the event.

12. Send winning Soccer Challenge Score Sheets (#4578) to the next level of competition. 13. To gain credit for your program, complete the associated reporting forms and submit them to the Supreme Council

Department of Fraternal Mission. Remember to retain copies for your council records. 14. Immediately after your event is finished, complete the Soccer Challenge Participation Report Form (#4567) and

Community Report Form (Forthcoming) 15. At the end of the fraternal year, complete your Columbian Award Application (#SP-7)

DAILY PRAYER TO END ABORTION

Vets Night Dinner Dance

Alert Alert Alert

Knights of Columbus Dinner Dance Saturday November 10, 2018.

This one night we will be honoring The United States Marine Corps birthday (Nov 10, 1775) and Veterans Day Nov. 11th.

This is a very important celebration.

Let’s make this night very special and honor all Knights who are veterans.

I am making a special request to all my brother Knights who served in the military and are veterans. Attend this Dinner

Dance. Wear your military uniform or an item that fits, a hat, jacket, shirt, tie and probably socks. Wear your military

ribbons and badges. Show your pride in your military service. We can take a little trip down memory lane, swap military

stories and continue the debate, which is the best service.

To make this even more special I’m asking all members with military service to search their archives for a picture of

themselves in their military uniform. Scan it and email it to me [email protected]. In addition to that picture I want

a picture of how you look now. You have to get them to me as soon as possible and I will put together a collage of

photos – How we looked then and how we look now.

With a little effort on your part we can make this a memorable celebration of our participation in the military services as

Knights.

Remember…

Attend the dance

Email me your photo in uniform and how you look now

Wear your uniform, ribbons and badges

Have fun

God Bless

Brother Frank Polis

Feast Day: September 18 Patron of: Pilots and those suffering mental handicaps Birth: 1603 Death: 1663 Canonized By: Pope Clement XIII in 1767

St. Joseph was born at Cupertino, in the diocese of Nardo in the Kingdom of Naples, in 1603. After spending his childhood and adolescence in simplicity and innocence, he finally joined the Franciscan Friars Minor Conventual. After his ordination to the holy priesthood, he gave himself up entirely to a life of humiliation, mortification, and obedience. He was most devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary and promoted devotion to her among all classes of people. His mother considered him a nuisance and treated him harshly. Joseph soon became very slow and absent-minded. He would wander around, going nowhere, his mouth gaping open. But he had a bad temper, too, and so, he was not at all popular. He tried to learn the trade of shoemaking, but failed. He asked to become a Franciscan, but they would not accept him. Next, he joined the Capuchins, but eight months later, they sent him away because he could not seem to do anything right. He dropped piles of dishes and kept forgetting to do what he was told. His mother was not at all pleased to have the eighteen-year-old Joseph back home again, so she finally got him accepted as a servant at the Franciscan monastery. He was given the monks habit and put to hard work taking care of the horses. About this time, Joseph began to change. He grew more humble and gentle, more careful and successful at his work. He also began to do more penance. Now, it was decided that he could become a real member of the Order and start studying for the priesthood. Although he was very good, he still had a hard time with studies. The examiner happened to ask him to explain the only thing he knew well, and so he was made a deacon, and later a priest. After this, God began to work many amazing miracles through St. Joseph. Over seventy times, people saw him rise from the ground while saying mass or praying. Often he went into ecstasy and would be completely rapt up in talking with God. He became so holy that everything he saw made him think of God, and he said that all the troubles of this world were nothing but the "play" battles children have with popguns. St. Joseph became so famous for the miracles that he was kept hidden, but he was happy for the chance to be alone with his beloved Lord. On His part, Jesus never left him alone and one day came to bring him to Heaven. Pope Clement XIII canonized him in 1767. He is the patron saint of air travelers, pilots and the mentally handicapped. It is said that the life of this saint was marked by ecstasies and levitations. The mere mention of God or a spiritual matter was enough to take him out of his senses; at Mass he frequently floated in the air in rapture. Once as Christmas carols were being sung, he soared to the high altar and knelt in the air, rapted in prayer. On another occasion, he ferried a cross thirty-six feet high through the air to the top of a Calvary group as easily as one might carry a straw. The people flocked to him in droves seeking help and advice in the confessional, and he converted many to a truly Christian life. However, this humble man had to endure many severe trials and terrible temptations throughout his life. He died on September 18, 1663. Prayer of St. Joseph of Cupertino O Great St. Joseph of Cupertino who while on earth did obtain from God the grace to be asked at your examination only the questions you knew, obtain for me a like favour in the examinations for which I am now preparing. In return I promise to make you known and cause you to be invoked. Through Christ our Lord. St. Joseph of Cupertino, Pray for us. Amen.

Sign of the Cross In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen

Our Father Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen

Hail Mary Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now, and at the hour of our death. Amen

Glory Be Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

Fatima Prayer O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of Thy mercy. Note: The Fatima Prayer is optional and should not be said after the initial 3 Hail Mary’s

Hail, Holy Queen Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary
