Content 1:Development of ozone monitoring capacity
The 7th Meeting of the Ozone Research Managers, Geneva,Switzerland, 19-21 May, 2008
FY-3 satellite, which is scheduled to launch in late of
May 2008, is China’s 2nd generation of polar orbit
satellite.
Ozone Instruments on FY-3 satellite:
TOU----- Total Ozone Unit
SBUS----Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet Sounder
Ozone instruments on FY-3 satellite
The 7th Meeting of the Ozone Research Managers, Geneva,Switzerland, 19-21 May, 2008
TOU/SBUS are the first ozone instruments that China make and They are also the first ones that are carried on Chinese satellite.
The SBUS is similar with SBUV/2 and TOU similar with TOMS in design and wavelengths.
Thanks to Dr.Lawrence E.Flynn from NOAA/ NESDIS for his help in developing algorithms of FY-3 Sat under the China-U.S cooperaiton project in the field of atmospheric science and Technology.

Who? In China, satellite ozone data users come fro
m Universities, Institutes and Space agencies.
What? Ozone variations, products validation…
Why? Change of Ozone and influence on climate ch
ange, developing satellite ozone monitoring…
Users and research Goal
The 7th Meeting of the Ozone Research Managers, Geneva,Switzerland, 19-21 May, 2008
The Tibetan Plateau is located in south-west of China. It is
the highest Plateau in the world, with average height
about 4,000 to 5,000meters above the sea level. It is
called the ‘roof of the world’ or the ‘third pole of the
earth’. The relatively strong radiation and the nature of
the ground surface make the Plateau a strong heating
source to the atmosphere.
The Tibetan Plateau
The 7th Meeting of the Ozone Research Managers, Geneva,Switzerland, 19-21 May, 2008
1.To understand the effects of large scale of topography on the
ozone distribution.
2.To determine if the ozone change can modify the surface-
atmosphere system in the Tibet region, and possibly influence
the climate system on the global scale.
3. To understand how the ozone reduction may affect the
biosphere in that region.
The aims of these research in TP
The 7th Meeting of the Ozone Research Managers, Geneva,Switzerland, 19-21 May, 2008
Ozone variations in the TP (From: Zou et al., 1996, GRL )
The 7th Meeting of the Ozone Research Managers, Geneva,Switzerland, 19-21 May, 2008
The ozone trend over the Tibetan Plateau,
deduced from TOMS 1978-1991 year-
round data is -0.79±0.82 DU/year, with the
monthly trends ranging from -0.17DU/year
to -1.79DU/year.

Low ozone over the TP (From: Bian, et al., 2006 Chinese Science Bulletin)
The 7th Meeting of the Ozone Research Managers, Geneva,Switzerland, 19-21 May, 2008
By analyzing the total ozone data from TOMS an
d ground-based observations, the author found
that a large area with extremely low ozone occu
rred over the Tibetan Plateau during December
14-17, 2003. The area with total ozone < 220D
U is over 2.5 Million km2.

low data from TOMS were found during 2002-03

Comparison of TOMS and GB(2)
The 7th Meeting of the Ozone Research Managers, Geneva,Switzerland, 19-21 May, 2008
By comparing the total ozone data from TOMS
(SAT) and ground-based (GB) observations,
the authors found significant higher annual
mean values of GB-SAT in 2003, and very
large jumps of monthly mean were shown in
September 2002.

The Figures show AIRS-GPS03 comparison in S
pring(MAM), Summer/Fall(JJASO) and Wint
er(NDJF). The comparison show that there exi
st difference of ozone profiles from AIRS with
ozone sonde to some extent. The scale of the dif
ference vary in different height.

Residual of TOR-influencing model
The 7th Meeting of the Ozone Research Managers, Geneva,Switzerland, 19-21 May, 2008
The tropospheric ozone is often recognized to be connect
ed with human activities. By considering the influence
of surface height and population density, the authors u
se the residual to show the possible influence of large s
cale of topography on dynamical processes and conseq
uence on the distribution of tropospheric ozone over C
hina .
Main results:

Share the experience in developing new ozone instruments and retrieval algorithms.
Cooperate to make consistent long-term dataset from different country’s satellites.
Pay more attention to the application research using data from satellites.
Content 3 Recommendations
The 7th Meeting of the Ozone Research Managers, Geneva,Switzerland, 19-21 May, 2008
China has come to realize the importance of ozone monitoring from satellite, and are making a great effort in developing the capacity.
FY-3 is the start that Chinese satellite carrying ozone instruments, and we will develope new instruments on following satellites.
FY-3, the China’s 2nd generation polar orbit satellite, will be launch in late May 2008. We hope it will be helpful for detecting the global ozone change trends.
Content 4 Summary
The 7th Meeting of the Ozone Research Managers, Geneva,Switzerland, 19-21 May, 2008
Ozone products from FY-3 satellite will be available to users of the whole world.
Chinese scientists have paid extensive attention to the application research according different aims in the past. More and better research projects will be carried out in the future.
