Who is going to win this year Ironman France? The question is asked and the answer will only come late on June 29. After the reign of Zamora, the era Van Lierde has seen a rain of records over the past editions. But this year, nor Van Lierde or Zamora will be of the par-ty. After several years of loyalty, the Belgian world cham-pion has chosen Frankfurt to bring a new IM experience under his belt. Wish him luck and as much success as in Nice on July 6 in Germany. But back to the IM France ... Who will be the new cham-pion? Bertrand Billard is certainly into everybody’s mind after the strength and consistency he has shown during the 70.3 Pays d’Aix not only on the bike but also on the run. We can tell that the ITU World Champion has now ente-red the big league through the front door and he surely wants his laurels to shine more than ever for another couple of months. After his first 70.3 victory, can the Triathl’Aix athlete double it with a first IM win in Nice?In any case, the success yielded in Aix was highly motiva-

ting to him and he is now heading towards the Promenade des Anglais…The French pros will be over represented at this event with a bike course as much attractive than scary.Among them, Jeremy Jurkiewicz has also made a strong impression in Aix under the colors of his new club, Poissy, is to be closely watched as is Hervé Faure who dreams of victories after having racked up the 1st edition. But, beware; a Belgian can hide another one... In the absence of Van Lierde, Bart Aernouts hopes to push further his superb performance from last year where he ma-naged to beat the former race record and yet had to accept a second place behind his compatriot. In the foreign triathlete camp, do not forget about the Bermudian Tyler Butterfield, who will also be hitting the IM season he has set so carefully (see our article in this issue) hoping to continue his success story after his Abu Dhabi win.

To make you wait, you’ll find numerous races report this month, tips to avoid being a victim of the first heat of the year and more great tests: a bike, a watch and a wetsuit ! And all at no charge!

ALPE D’HUEZ

The 21 curves of Alpe d’Huez have always been part of any “to do rider list”

in the cycling world, but since 2006, they also became a true challenge to

all triathletes coming from all over the world (and each year more than the

previous one) to face the legendary climb. Whether competing for the long

distance or the short one, everyone has now the right to enjoy the myth...

Let’s meet with one of the organizer, Cyrille Neveu

TrimaX-hebdo : How is born the Alpe-d’Huez Triathlon? Cyrille Neveu : It came to life in 2006 with a short distance competition only but the year after it was already showcasing long and short races, as well as one for kids.It was my way to start foreseeing my new way of life as I was close to stop competing. In fact, it did happen two years later, in 2008 TrimaX-hebdo : Is it not putting additional pres-sure on you when planning a triathlon in such a mythical cycling place? Cyrille Neveu : The stress was more to succeed on the first year. A lot of foreign athletes were at the rendezvous. It was necessary to organize, right from the start, an event matching the high image of the Alpe d’Huez climb.

TrimaX-hebdo : The event takes place over several townships, isn’t it creating more issues in terms of organization (two bike parks, etc.…)?Cyrille Neveu : It is indeed very difficult. We have to educate the athletes (especially in the early

years). It does involve in deed more equipment, more logistics, and more volunteers.... But this is also what makes this event so special !

TrimaX-hebdo : Over the last couple of years, what have been the main changes of the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon ?Cyrille Neveu : In 2009 I partnered with IMG, an international company acting in sports marketing, communication and TV rights. Naturally, this is around those areas that the evolution has been the most dramatic and also what brought this event to the top of the triathlon international scene.

TrimaX-hebdo : What is the profile of the long dis-tance race? And the short one? Cyrille Neveu : Both can be compared to real mountain stage races. This is even truer for the long one which features 3 alpine passes with one being “hors category” class.TrimaX-hebdo : : With its 21 curves and a run in high altitude, can we still say that the Alpe d’Huez Triathlon remains accessible? Cyrille Neveu : I do not believe this is an extraordi-

nary race as the running distance are not that long (21 km and 7 km for the LD and CD).Having said that, the LD requires for sure a good preparation especially for the cycling part that can easily wear you down with it 3 long alpine passes (14 km, 20 km and 14 km).On the CD, many unlicensed athletes are actually competing.Regardless, the two events stand for a great challenge.

TrimaX-hebdo : How many competitors were re-gistered last year? How many bibs are available at full capacity?Cyrille Neveu : Last year we had 1,000 athletes for the long distance and 1,200 for the short one. At

most we can manage 1100 people on the long dis-tance, 1200 on the short one, plus another extra 400 to practice duathlon and about 250 children for the kid races.

TrimaX-hebdo : Do you have pros racing it? Which distance ?Cyrille Neveu : On the long one we received a big number of Spanish pros, including Alberto More-no as the highest ranked one (he just finished 3rd at the 70.3 Pays d’ Aix). He is, I think, the future of Marcel Zamora on this type of race.Burton Matthew and Darren Jenkins from Austra-lia as well as Brandt Niels Jorgensen who is Danish will also be there. On the CD you’ll see Marcel Zamora representing his county. But like every year, I recommend all Elite athletes to start sending me their application for both CD and LD during the month of June. The Alpe d’Huez Triathlon races represent for most of the top athletes an ideal transition test between the first half of the season and the end of it.

TrimaX-hebdo : What would you say to a triathlete a little reluctant to sign ?Cyrille Neveu : Do not miss an opportunity for a great, warm and human adventure.

SERIES CHALLENGE

Rimini

5 TRIhebdo 11

With a nice start-list for this Challenge Rimini, the winner is Italian. Domenico Passuello who was

running under the colors of the Forhans Team, has been masterful, making the difference on the run

despite a very strong bike.

Pasuello at home

Page 7: The team · 5 . Clavel Maurice Ger- Ast Suben 04:09:46.30 Women results 1 . Mullan Eimear Irlande 04:33:09.00 2 . Deckers Tine Belgique 04:35:54.60 3 . Sammler Daniela Allemagne 04:38:33.30

The former cyclist from Tuscany was able to have a good swim even if he was not among the best, which obliged him to have a very strong bike...

His specialty! Not only did Passuello come back on the lead but he also broke out! Only Johann Acker-man was able to struggle against the Italian. But he had to give up on the 21km of run, paying his efforts of the bike. Nothing seemed to prevent Pas-suello from taking the victory on the Italian soil.

From then on, his rivals had to compete for the two other places of the podium. The Autrian Adreas Gilgmayr was impressive on the run and took the second place. The British Ritchie Nicholls com-pletes the podium.

From the favorite side, the race didn’t take place as it was supposed to be... Massimo Cigana fails and finishes 4th, Daniel Fontana, 2nd last year, had to abandon around kilometers 25 on the bike. Ales-sandro Degasperi, 3rd in 2013, didn’t finish either, stopping the race from the first kilometers of run after physical problems.

The female field was also very strong and the girls were battling it out, from the swim start. The Iri-

sh Eimear Mullan did a strategical race, managing her effort during all the swim, and after the bike she was first. Very at ease on the run, she held her rank with a comfortable lead on the second, the Belgian Tine Deckers (3’ behind) and on the third Daniela Sammler (5’ behind).

REPORT

Crossed looks on the 70.3 Pays d’Aix...

By Nicolas Mazetier avec Jacvan, pictures jacvan-events@copyrights

Pays d’Aix, Cézanne territory has become a triathlon territory on Sunday, May 18th... The big first rendez-vous of the IRON-MAN planet on the French territory.

1700 people registered on this race now famous, very well organized, a nice weather, a wonderful bike race, and a motivation with a big desire to bat-tle for everyone. All the conditions were united so that this event became a big triathlon party.

From the organization side, no surprise, every-thing was perfect with a huge logistic allowing to manage two different sites. Peyrolles and its lake : a wonderful bike park, a lake allowing to realize a simple swimming course... Aix-en-Provence : a finish area in the city center, and a running course allowing to «stroll» in the small streets. Between these two places, the triathletes can en-joy the landscapes dear to Cézanne but not wit-

hout effort, they deserve «la Sainte-Victoire»...

All the competitors can take their bib number when they want, and deposit their bike, their bags when they want, and for most of you, the family who came along can also ensure the logistic side in order to make it easier for you and be in the best conditions possible from the next morning.

The bike park gets full rapidly and some of the amateurs cannot ignore the Pros. We must say that the start-list is quite impressive with a situation unheard of : two world champions! From one side, the ITU world champion, the French Bertrand Billard who now runs under the colors of the local club, Triathl’Aix. From the other side, the Ironman world champion Frederik Van Lierde. The Belgian reveals to us his new personalized P5, nobody wants to miss that! Everyone can enjoy the pre-sence of these two champions on their side in the bike park...

Between professionnalsand age groups

You were a lot to follow the LIVE of the race via our special page created for the event and visible

on our website and on our application. Rather than offering you a telling of the race, our report

related the race of the amateurs, those 1700 triathletes who came to Aix to test themselves, to

perform, to go over their limits but with a common point: a pleasure they can share.

Page 12: The team · 5 . Clavel Maurice Ger- Ast Suben 04:09:46.30 Women results 1 . Mullan Eimear Irlande 04:33:09.00 2 . Deckers Tine Belgique 04:35:54.60 3 . Sammler Daniela Allemagne 04:38:33.30

On Sunday, at 6.30 am, everybody is already there, the bike park closes at 7.20 am, there’s no time to lose! The bike is ready, the wetsuit is on, they just have to wait and see the starts of the different «AGE GROUP» waves. The swim is fluid, the water temperature is 18°C and it’s a real pleasure to swim in such conditions. After a long transition, you go for 90km on a rela-tively rolling course, with no wind, the conditions are ideal! There is a battle between Jérémy Jurkiewicz, ap-parently very fit, who manages to take the lead and hold it during most of the bike course. But the tenors are not far, among them is Bertrand Billard who seems to patiently wait for the right moment and measure the guys present with him in the group... namely Frederik Van Lierde and Anthony Pannier...

The mountain Sainte Victoire is getting closer, and the difficulty of the bike course also... Two kilome-ters of climbing which reminds us that we must

absolutely keep energy prior to that in order to be able to keep going on!

And the col du Cengle is decisive and not only for the Pros! This is where Billard breaks out to catch up Jurkiewicz, which makes them arrive together in the transition area, leaving Pannier and Van Lierde 1 minute behind. For the amateurs, it’s the moment to know if they’ve managed their effort correctly or not... Otherwise they could end up fro-zen like a Cézanne painting!

Once this last difficulty is done, road to Aix...

We enter downtown, the road is sinuous and we already have in mind the running course... Ano-ther time, the transition is long, we take our «Run bag», the public is cheering for us, the atmosphere is motivating... Let’s go for the «act number 3» of the Ironman 70.3 Pays d’Aix.

The run... It is far from flat, made of four laps of 5km each where the restarts are numerous, the

small hills and false flats, and from the first lap we know what to expect. We will have to be cautious and manage our effort if we want to correctly run in the complicated part of the park! It’s not obvious to hold the pace on the whole course, we must refuel and wait patiently for the fountain, meaning that we’ve just finished another lap. Little by little, the wristbands collec-tion is getting bigger.

Many people can, by the game of the laps, see the Pros. Billard is holding his first place, while in the women’s field, Jeanne Collonge seems to fly like the dragonfly tattooed on her shoulder! She «swallows» each second and com-petitors, her fluid stride is masterful. She also runs right to victory... For some of us, we will need more patience to complete the wristband collection, which stands for finish line...

The finish line is here, the music, the speaker, the public... As in every long distance triathlons, we enjoy this mo-ment of delivery and satisfaction of the accomplished work. We cross the line by collecting the FINISHER me-dal and tee-shirt, now we can enjoy the

best moment of the race, the after-finish area with food and massage, and the reunion with the family.

We tell the race, we compare our performances, the ranking, and we begin to dream of a qualifi-cation for Mont-Tremblant. The verdict will come off in the evening during the Awards Ceremony for the «slots» attribution. Some people will be sa-tisfied, some will be disappointed but it’s the hard law of sports!

Despite a change of date, the 2014 edition of this IRONMAN 70.3 Pays d’Aix will remain in the me-mories, as much by the organization as by the win-ners, because in the Pros’ field, the «frenchies» have shown they were strong winning each men and women races! Some have met the challenge, some have reached their goal, some have qualified, but for most of you, the ticket is already taken for 2015.

Bertrand Billard : Ever since I’ve signed in the Triathl’Aix, people speak about this race! By the

power of hearing from this, I was eager to be here. Last year, I did a good bike but i struggled in the run. This year, I managed to keep the lead I had taken at the

end of the bike and beginning of the run to win here... It’s my first victory on an Ironman 70.3.

I couldn’t expect something better in front of a public who has supported me.

The crowd was very enthusiastic and cheered for me all day long. This support has allowed me to have a

little more inside of me to stay ahead of a very strong Jé-rémy Jurkiewicz, with whom the battle was

very tough until the end.

Jeanne Collonge : Raising the arms, above all on

this day and at this place, has had a special taste. This 70.3 Pays d’Aix, that I had won in 2011 for the first edition, was particularly important to me. It was hard for me to push at the be-ginning on the bike and I couldn’t follow the pace at the start... My sensations have slowly become bet-ter at the end of the bike.

After the transition, I was told that I was 1’ behind Gina Crawford and 4’30

behind Tine Deckers. At that moment, I didn’t think I was going to catch up on the

lead and I just thought that I would give everything I had left... with no regret at the

end. Quite rapidly, I passed Tamsin, and Gina at the 8 or 9th km. Then, I felt moved

by the energy and cheering of the public and the other competitors... It was extraordinary

for me to be able to run with no pain (after my injury in the calf ) and with such sensations.

I thought about what my coach told me before the start «Until the end... The race is not over be-

fore you cross the finish line.» I continued my ef-fort and passed Tine at km 15. Then the finish line

was particularly savory and emotional...

TYLER BUTTERFIELD

For financiers, it’s unimaginable: a four hundred percent return on investment, after only three month’s time.

These numbers have no business being uttered in the same sentence by investment bankers, let alone written into

a shareholder’s prospectus. If a broker dared even to whisper such an irresponsibly audacious forecast, he’d wind

up in a pale cinderblock room battling for bunk space with Bernie Madoff.

But in the world of triathlon, Tyler Butterfield scored this outlandish return once already, and he’s confident that

the full dividends are yet to come.

By Zack VESTAL, photo sJay Prasuhn@lava_magazine and jacvan@droits-réservés

After winning $40,000 at the Abu Dhabi International Triathlon in March, 400% in 3 months is a reasonable approxima-tion of the ROI Butterfield achieved fol-

lowing his upfront cash investment in a four hour testing session at the San Diego Low Speed Wind Tunnel in December of 2013. This conservative estimate of his profit margin, af-ter paying his own way to the wind tunnel, lends a striking numerical value as to how handsomely his initial speculation has paid off. And that’s before the real triathlon season is fully underway.

Even as he gambled on the prospect of future re-turns, Butterfield didn’t expect such a huge and immediate payback. He mostly just wanted to get faster, with an eye toward the long game of his career. With many competitive seasons ahead and some of his biggest goals still yet to achieve, But-terfield’s choices during the winter of 2013 could continue paying dividends for years to come.

A want for wind

“I’ve always wanted to go in a wind tunnel, and last year I hinted that to a few sponsors,” said Butterfield over lunch in his adopted home town of Boulder, Colorado. “But it’s a slow process when sponsors have to pay.”Especially with his background in cycling, Butter-field has known for a long time the benefits a pro-ductive wind tunnel session could confer. “I’d been in the San Diego tunnel once before, when I was riding for Slipstream,” he related. “Danny Pate was on the bike, but just going with someone to a wind tunnel, you pick up a lot. I learned a lot from seeing someone else,” he said.

Pate was testing helmets, and according to Butter-

field, just adding an integrated visor to his helmet shaved 20 seconds from a hypothetical 40km time. This experience from his road racing days back in 2007 helped guide Butterfield’s decision making when an unexpected windfall left him with a little extra cash at the end of last season.

Cozumel the cash cow

Late last year, Butterfield went to Ironman Cozu-mel with low expectations. He had only to finish the race to qualify for Kona in 2014, and he didn’t expect to finish well. “I went to Cozumel and honestly didn’t expect to get paid,” he said. “I was just ticking the Kona box for next year, for 2014.” But the race went surprisingly well. Butterfield finished second and earned about $7000 in prize money. On the Monday after the race was over, he emailed the wind tunnel to ask about pricing and scheduling. “When can you get me in, and what is the price,” in Butterfield’s words. He worked up a budget and also solicited the help of a friend who had experience with making position changes ac-cording to wind data. “I wanted someone who knows how wind tunnels are run,” he related. “So from Monday to Wednesday when they came back with a budget, and I said to myself, ‘look, within reason I can invest that much into my career.’ The choice was essentially made,” said Butterfield.

He explained further, “I don’t have a coach, so I don’t have to pay coaching fees out of my prize money. I ba-sically took the prize money from Cozumel, and the choice I had to make was, ‘It’s December - I can spend it on holiday or something in December for the family, or I can invest it into my career.’ I chose to invest it, and my wife and family supported that decision.”

The San Diego wind tunnel was booked on the spot for a time block on December 13, 2013. Plane tickets and a hotel were finalized, a travel plan jelled, and the enterprise was underway.

Data doesn’t lie

Four months after the wind tunnel session, and a month after securing the biggest win of his pro-fessional career, Butterfield reflected on the expe-rience in San Diego. Now firmly established as a contender for the biggest triathlons in the world, he gives enormous credit to the time spent in San Diego.“The wind tunnel was huge,” said Butterfield. “In the wind tunnel, the guy running it kept saying ‘sorry’ to me. He didn’t find huge chunks of time. But when you added it all up, the little bits added up and the confi-dence factor was massive.”

He recounted that three of the four hours spent

with the fans spinning were used to adjust his po-sition, which was the primary objective. A final hour was dedicated to equipment testing.

Butterfield started position testing by moving his saddle up, but it made no difference. “I viewed that as a good thing, because I was able to maintain my pe-daling position and my comfort, with no aero penalty,” he said. “That was actually a win, to eliminate that as-pect of my fit from the equation. In fact, that’s part of why I did well in Abu Dhabi, because I didn’t have to change my pedaling position – there was no trade off.”Next under the microscope was the front end. “We started by lowering the bars 1cm, and it was slower,” he said. He lowered his handlebars another 1cm, and again his aerodynamic drag increased.“At first when I got slower, I started to get nervous! I was thinking, ‘I’m just wasting money here!’” said But-terfield.But finally at 3cm below his original handlebar height, Butterfield’s aerodynamic drag dropped

AERODYNAMISM TEST

significantly. He and the tunnel test manager spe-culated that the first incremental lowering of his elbows simply increased his frontal arm surface without actually dropping his shoulders. Finally with a larger drop, his head and shoulders were pulled down out of the wind.

Experimenting with equipment

Butterfield saved just enough time to run a few pairs of wheels through the wind tunnel test pro-tocol. First, he tested his own wheel setup and a couple of discs. Then, Butterfield ran some of the wheel combinations used by Kona competitors like Luke McKenzie who had clocked fast bike splits just a few months prior. To experiment with Andy Starykowicz’s setup, Kona’s fastest rider in 2013, he borrowed a pair of Mavic CXR 80s from an age group competitor in the area.

Already sponsored by Cervelo, a relationship he cemented by signing a lifetime contract in March, Butterfield’s data and his own analysis pointed to the reasoning behind adopting Mavic as one of his new sponsors for 2014.

“Everything that people said was faster, was faster,” said Butterfield. He was also able to point back to race results in Kona and correlate them to his wind tunnel findings. “We didn’t have much crosswind in Kona until the last 40k. In the last 40k there was more of a crosswind than at any other time in the race. And that’s when Starykowicz pulled away, that’s when Fred-dy (Van Lierde) pulled away and caught up time, and that’s when Tim O’Donnell who was a bit behind ac-tually made up time.”

After Butterfield correlated these Kona bike per-formances with his own wind tunnel findings, his equipment decision for 2014 was made.“It’s interesting in the last 40k, everyone on Mavic rode well, and on my bike (with no rider), the Mavic wheels were 1:30 faster for an hour at 10 degrees crosswind. That’s why I went with Mavic,” said Butterfield. “Kona is known for the crosswind, and they perform best there. And that’s when it’s going to count in Kona.”

All in for Ali’I Drive

Butterfield is frank in assessing his own ability. Despite compelling evidence to the contrary, he

genuinely feels that his athletic ability alone won’t net big victories going forward.

“I’m looking ahead at 2014, 2015 Kona,” said Butter-field. “I learned from some good guys that if you want to do well at something, you have to plan it out.”Equipment and position have come to play a cri-tically important role, given Butterfield’s menta-lity. He said candidly, “The thing is, I’m not the best. I don’t think I would win Kona on just my ability. There are guys that are better at swimming, biking, and run-ning. So it’s like, if they’re naturally better than me, then I don’t want to compete on talent alone. It’s not always the best rider that wins. I’m looking for ways to level the bar and stay ahead of the people that were behind me, but are better athletes. So going in the wind tunnel …”

He doesn’t finish the sentence, and doesn’t have to. The return on his investment became clear in Abu Dhabi, as did his prospects for the upcoming season.

Asked about other factors that might have launched his season with such a career defining victory, Butterfield was definitive. He said, “I would put it almost all on the bike. I didn’t train my run like most people do. My bike training was about the same as Kona. I did a bit of speed running but nothing major. Between looking at my position and equipment I really put it down to the bike.”In addition to the fit adjustment and new wheels, he’s made other equipment changes to improve the overall aerodynamic and mechanical efficien-cy of his bike. Even conservatively adding up the small gains by each little change, Butterfield feels that these “free watts” accumulate and total up to a substantial overall gain.

Clearly, Tyler Butterfield isn’t afraid to assess and plan for his future with a clinical, calcula-ting approach. In his mind, the prize money he re-invested after Cozumel wasn’t a gamble. With the knowledge he’s gained, the 400% payback he earned in Abu Dhabi is just the beginning.

DURANCEDURANCE

THE PRO’S ADVICE

By Marion Rouxel, Dietician Nutritionist at OVERSTIM.s®

TRIhebdo 37

of the triathleteThe hydration The first heats often mean the season is beginning with your first races. But it also means dehydration if you don’t

pay attention to stay hydrated before, during and after an effort.

A lack of water will obviously generate a decrease in your physical performance. Here are some advices to stay

hydrated and fit!

Water plays an important part in a lot of reactions in your body and intervenes in thermoregulation. It is also the main component of the body: 60% of an adult weight, 70% in muscular cells.

When you practice sports you lose a lot of water. During a physical effort, 75% of the produced en-ergy comes out as heat. In order to limit the in-creasing of body temperature, sweating gets rid of this heat, which generates water loss. Depending on individuals, weather..., these hydric losses can go up to more than 2 liters per hour of effort. If you don’t compensate them, it will generate a de-crease in your physical performances, and physi-cal failures... Here are some advices to learn how to better hydrate before, during and after the ef-fort.

Your daily hydration :Drink everyday 1,5 to 2 L of water. On training days, your hydric needs are higher, then you have to drink more.

Your hydration on training days :A chronic dehydration related to a lack of hydra-tion during your sessions can easily generate inju-ries and tiredness... Your fitness and the quality of

your sessions will be altered. It is important to pay attention to your hydric inputs during your bike, run and swim sessions (because you lose water even in the water). Thus, get used to be well hy-drated following some advice: - Never drink more than 10 cl at a time. The more important the quantity of absorbed li-quid at a time is, the longer the gastric emptying will be, and rehydration will be less efficient. For a good assimilation, drink one mouth full (two maximum) every time (5 to 10 cl).

- Drink from the beginning of the effort. In an effort, in less than an hour, you can lose more than 1 L of water... And your physical skills will be reduced by more than 20%*! Thus, don’t wait and drink from the beginning of your exercise. *»Répercussion de la déshydratation sur la perfor-mance.» (Effects of dehydration on performance) Works of L. HERMANSEN and coll.

- Drink as regularly as possible. Learn to drink regularly and as close as possible if the temperature is high. Ideally, drink one mouth full every 5 minutes. Don’t exceed 10 minutes, even if the weather is cold, when the feeling of thirst is less present.

Page 20: The team · 5 . Clavel Maurice Ger- Ast Suben 04:09:46.30 Women results 1 . Mullan Eimear Irlande 04:33:09.00 2 . Deckers Tine Belgique 04:35:54.60 3 . Sammler Daniela Allemagne 04:38:33.30

TRIhebdo38

- Select the most adapted drink to your race es-pecially drinks adapted to the length of the effort such as HYDRIXIR® ANTIOXYDANT or HY-DRIXIR® LONG DISTANCE from OVERTSTIMS. Specific drinks are conceived to ensure the ne-cessary hydric input in the best conditions and to bring the adapted carbohydrate energy to the linking of disciplines. Isotonic drinks general-ly have an electrolyte and glucose concentration equal to that of blood. Then, they are easily assi-milated and they allow a good hydration and a fast energy input.

your hydration after training :

After your session, keep drinking until the end of the day. To adapt your hydration, weigh your-self before and after a session. The difference of weight corresponds to a water loss. For a good rehydration, multiply this weight difference by 1,5 and drink this quantity. For example, if you have lost 700gr, slowly drink 1 L (0,7 kg x 1,5 = 1,05) after your session. Urine must be clear at bedtime.

Your hydration on race day :

Start a race being well-hydrated by drinking enough on the day before and in the morning. Du-ring the race, practice the good habits you have during your training sessions. As it is not possible to drink during the swim, take advantage of the bike to follow the hydration ad-

vice explained above. On the run, take advantage of the food stations and/or run with your own drink. Be particularly cautious if the weather is warm and humid because the water loss is higher. Finally, be aware that a cold drink may cause in-testinal problems and a warm drink increases the time of gastric emptying. The ideal temperature seems to be around 10/15°C.

Your hydration after the race :

During a triathlon, it is hard to compensate all hy-dric losses. After your exercise, don’t wait before drinking. It is advised to take 50cl of an adapted drink such as recovery drink from OVERSTIMS and bicarbonate water. Thus, your body, being more hydrated, will eliminate more easily the wastes produced by efforts and your recovery will be accelerated.

MATERIAL TEST

Tested by Sébastien RODRIGUEZ, pictures SR and Cervélo©copyrights

Presentation : Do we really need to present the P2? This bike is part of the Cervélo legend, maybe even of triathlon! The P2 figures, among others, two victories in

Hawaii, but many other success in triathlon and in cycling. After seven years of service, the oncoming of the P3 and P5, Cervélo wants to give a new life to this model. The new P2 was born, in order to offer pre-mium technologies to the frame, but at an affor-dable price! For a more detailed presentation of the bike, we invite you to consult our magazine number 125 (magazine numéro 125), we were in San Diego for the official presentation of this new P2.

The frame

This new P2 is adorns itself of a white dress, with blue colors here and there. The frame finishing is shiny, which gets out the ac-tual tendency. The whole is elegant, and is better looking than in picture. The frame tubes are quite impressive, very wide and very profiled. Sideways, the bike is imposing, in front we can’t even see it,

it seems to break the air! The front of the frame, at the steering headset level, and the bottom bracket, remind us the P5 features. The back of the frame is also imposing, the saddle tube brushes your pneu-matic till the brake stirrup. It is very good-looking and inspires aerodynamics, it is even surprising for a frame which is ranked as «entry level». The frame is extended by a very pro-filed and smooth seat-post, and also by a perfectly integrated fork. The fork is a little bit surprising, it is particularly thin, which is contrasting with the thickness of some of the frame tubes.

Regarding the finishings, it is clean. The brake and derailleur sheathes are integrated at maximum, everything is planned for a mounting in mechani-cal or electrical group. For those who want to mount the frame with elec-trics, a battery support is planned under the bot-tom bracket. Cervélo has also thought about your nutrition on this new P2, you will find two screws on top of the frame to fix a wallet, and also a screw under the bottom bracket to fix an arrangement box. It’s convenient and perfectly in harmony with the

by Cervélo

In a former edition, we had tried an ultra-premium machine, reserved to elites, this time we have tried the brand

new Cervelo P2, which aims to be performant and above all very affordable.

The P2

Neat crossing of the back wheel, the frame inspires aerodynamics.

Only visible difference with a premium frame, the non-integration of the stem and the brake captions.

TRIhebdo42

bike line, without jeopardizing aerodynamics. For an entry-level bike, this P2 is surprising. Tubes, sheath integration, details for nutrition... it’s diffi-cult to find a real lack of anything compared to a premium frame. The only visible difference would be the use of classical brake calipers, instead of integrated cali-pers like on the P5 for example. We could also note the same on the steering headset with a classical stem, instead of total integrations, very fashio-nable on premium models.

Equipment

At a given time, this new P2 has to justify its en-try-level ranking. It’s clearly on the equipment that we fall in this category. The bike is equipped with a Shimano 105 group 10 speeds, with brake calipers and an aluminum bracket BB30 FSA Gos-samer. The Profil Design headset is also in alumi-num. The stem is a Aris, the arch a T2 Wing and the handlebars are T4+. The Shimano wheels are coherent with the trans-mission 105, a pair of R500. Thus, nothing «glamo-rous», but Cervélo hasn’t chosen reliable compo-nents. The only out-of-the-ordinary-component is the ISM Adamo Prologue saddle, very fashionable right now in triathlon.

Surely, we would have liked to see a nobler-equip-ped-frame, but the goal of this bike is accessibility, and the proposed equipment permits to reduce the bill.

With the arrival of frames with a maximal integra-tion of all components, we had almost forgotten how simple it is to fix a bike. It’s less beautiful, but everything is accessible, everything is very simple and fast to fix. With integrated brakes, the fixing can become a nightmare using several pairs of wheels of different width, it’s more simple with classical calipers...

Some handlebars cannot be changed, here, it’s very simple to adjust it to the desired position : a simple addition or removal of brace under the stem to settle the hight, a simple twist of the key on the handlebars to settle the length. The P2 seat-post also allows numerous settings, to the millime-ter. It’s equipped with a track allowing to obtain a saddle tube angle going from 75 to 79 degrees, you have a complete freedom between those two measures. Everything is planned so that you can have a posi-tion according to your needs with thisnew P2. As a proof, the bike we received for the test was a little bit too small for us, it’s a 51 size and a 54 would

MATERIAL TEST

The numerous possibilities of settings allow us to have the position we’ve wanted on the bike, in spite of the frame being a little bit too small.

Page 23: The team · 5 . Clavel Maurice Ger- Ast Suben 04:09:46.30 Women results 1 . Mullan Eimear Irlande 04:33:09.00 2 . Deckers Tine Belgique 04:35:54.60 3 . Sammler Daniela Allemagne 04:38:33.30

TRIhebdo56

have been more adapted. The numerous possibi-lities of settings allowed us to reproduce the same settings as on our personal bike, despite a short stem and short cranks.

On the road

From the first pedaling, something is surprising on this bike. It is easy. Easy to ride and to handle. Usually, on this kind of machine, you need adapta-bility, some time to find your landmarks. This kind of bike is often «disagreeable» on slow pace. It’s not the case on this new P2, on slow pace, on restarts, standing on the pedals, it’s as agreeable as a classical road bike. These aspects make it a very polyvalent bike, very agreeable to climb, even on strong percentages, and very secure, even in the most sinuous descents. With this new P2, we think than even the less skilled cyclists will feel comfortable in every situations, from technical descents to Sunday rides in pack. Despite a heavy entry-level equipment, because of the wheels in particular, the overall bike is reac-ting well. Restarts and gear changes are pretty easy, even if the bike lacks a bit of «punch» on stronger accelerations.

Is it due to a lack of rigidity of the frame, the wheels, the arch?

To know that, we have put our personal wheels on this Cervélo for a ride, and it changes every-thing! The frame takes another dimension, and can fully express all its potential. Regarding the feeling, it’s closer to a road bike than a pure time-trial bike. This comfort is due to the frame itself, which seems to be absorbing perfectly the imper-fections of the road, but also to its geometry. The head-tube has been slightly raised, allowing a less aggressive position, more adapted to most of ama-teur triathletes.

This new P2 could be a very good bike for long distance races, whatever the level of the triathlete. For the most powerful of you, it will be limited to short distance races, more nervous.

MATERIAL TEST

The bike is a gamester, easy to pilot, easy to restart.

The bike is agreeable in every situations, in climbs and in descents, alone or in pack.

If you have an bigger budget, you will have to invest on the wheels.

Page 24: The team · 5 . Clavel Maurice Ger- Ast Suben 04:09:46.30 Women results 1 . Mullan Eimear Irlande 04:33:09.00 2 . Deckers Tine Belgique 04:35:54.60 3 . Sammler Daniela Allemagne 04:38:33.30

TRIhebdo46

PriceThis is the strength of this new P2 Cervélo. To less than 3000 euros ready to ride, it’s difficult to ask for more. For this price, the frame itself is really expensive, it could even be the base of a premium setting. The low price results from the compo-nents and the equipment, but with functional and reliable products. For those who have an additio-nal budget, the wheels can be changed because they could be bad for your performances in com-petition.

Conclusion

We have been surprised by the quality of this P2 Cervélo frame.

If we remind us that is’s an entry-level bike, we are far from thinking that it is such a carbon piece. The adjective that could better qualify this bike is «affordable». First because of its price, then because of its de-sign which makes it a very polyvalent bike and adapted to most triathletes. The only limit, which is not objective, concerns the pleasure to ride with a premium material, on a «noble» mounting. This P2 Cervélo could be the choice of reason for many of us. Very few of us will reach its limits... But sometimes, «the heart has its reasons that rea-son knows nothing of»...

MATERIAL TEST

For this range price, this new P2 Cervélo is an agreeable surprise!

But it’s changing, some of their wetsuits have had a very remarkable beginning of season. It was the case on the Cannes triathlon («M» distance), with Asa Shaw leading alone in his Huub Archimèdes. This model is the top of the brand, according to Huub, the best wetsuit ever created... The name is launched, but how is it really ?

First contact

Even before unwrapping the wetsuit, the lightness of the product is impressive. Then, we’re impressed by the flexibility of the neoprene, especially at the shoulders and arms. The huub is incredibly thin, which makes us think that we will have an incre-dible freedom of movement.

Visually, the Huub Archimèdes is different from the others, its design is aggressive, which inspires performance. Some bright red panels at the biceps and calfs make us think of muscles in full effort, some grey bands cut the wetsuit, sculpting even more the athlete’s body!

From a purely visual point of view, this wetsuit looks good, it’s sober and elegant, it inspires some kind of strength... Huub offers numerous sizes, everyone should find a wetsuit adapted to his/her morphology ( see the link : http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0233/5881/files/Huub_Sizes_Arch_Aer_Acara_Aura.pdf?204).

A wetsuit adapted to swimmers

Strangely, with this Archimèdes, Huub is the first manufacturer to offer several declinations of its premium model, in order to offer a model adapted to swimmers. Huub has noted that 80% of triathletes are not ori-ginally swimmers, then most of them need a wet-suit, which corrects the position of their body in the water. But why should we deprive them of the flexibility of a premium wetsuit ? For these swimmers, Huub designed the model Archimèdes 3:5, which means 3mm on the upper body and 5mm on the lower, allowing to have your legs raised. For very good swimmers who want to take advan-tage of their kicking, with a perfect body align-ment, Huub designed the model Archimèdes 4:4,

In the water

First, it’s quite simple to put on the Huub Archimède. Once your legs placed in the wetsuit, the upper body is very flexible. When you have adjusted and closed your wetsuit, the feeling of cladding is excellent. But the Huub becomes bluffing at the shoulders, armpits and arms le-vel. This model is like a second skin, the freedom of move-ment is incredible. The whole is so flexible, so light that we have a hard time believing we’ve actually put on the neoprene wetsuit. We just want one thing : jump in the water!

What can we say?

It’s incredible, we have the feeling that we’ve been swim-ming our whole life. The body is perfectly aligned, very stable! All our parasitic movements seem to be erased, the X-O Skeleton technology is really efficient in addi-tion to an excellent level of flotation! With this 3:5, the legs are really well supported, they can rest completely, the long distance addicts will like that. But the most sur-prising is this freedom of movement, this comfort that the Archimède gives. Your arms rotate with an incredible fluidity without any pressure on your muscles.

If we put aside the stability and flotation of the Huub, its extreme lightness and flexibility give us the feeling to swim with no wetsuit. This freedom of movement allow a powerful and long-lasting propulsion. It’s really agreable on long distance races, and the 3:5 mo-del seems to be cut for this kind of efforts. We would have been curious to try the 4:4 declination to confirm that, but everything let us think that even very good swimmers would rather prefer the 3:5 when distances get longer ; for its flexibility on the upper body (3mm vs. 4mm) and for the economy on your legs.

But what is better than a race to confirm our impressions? We took part into several short distances at the beginning of the season and the result is considered final. We realized, from far, our best swimming performances.

What is due to the wetsuit? To our training? It’s hard to tell... You will have to judge!

Price

With no doubt, this point might repel some triath-letes. Around 600 euros, that’s an important amount... The premium level has a cost but it re-mains in the average compared to its competitors.

Conclusion

We have been clearly seduced by this wetsuit.

Decidedly, it gives major innovations to this kind of products, with a comfortable and, in the mean-time, an efficient wetsuit. Moreover, Huub have had the brilliant idea to create two models of this Archimèdes, to suit better your technique and your practice.

Huub doesn’t hesitate to say that this Archimèdes is best wetsuit ever created. As we couldn’t try all of the existing wetsuit, we would have more fi-nely-shaded opinions, even though we are totally seduced!
