THE CENTER FOR WOODEN BOATS | 3@ctr4woodenboats
Welcome to The Center for Wooden Boats’ 41st annual Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival. Here we celebrate wooden boats and maritime traditions. Try your hand with the specialized tools for building and repairing boats. Offer your children the chance to build their own toy boats to take home. Watch Quick & Daring, where the contestants build their own, self-designed boats and then launch them into Lake Union! Will they float or will they sink? And of course our skippers are at the ready to take you on a free boat ride.
Also gracing our docks are more than 35 visiting vessels ready for you to climb on board; ask for their best sea stories, while you imagine having your own wooden boat.
We welcome you to return to our docks after the Festival and enjoy access to the water for all!
WELCOME!
B R A N D T FA AT Z , E X E C U T I V E D I R E C T O R
There’s a big change in the 2017 Lake Union Wooden Boat Festival. For the first time in 41 Festivals we won’t see CWB Founder Dick Wagner striding the docks and uplands, clipboard and pen at the ready to note things that need to be fixed immediately and record ideas for making next year’s Festival better. There will be one fewer judge for the Quick & Daring Boatbuilding contest and one less smiling face at the ice cream social.
Following a brief illness, Dick Wagner passed away on April 20. We celebrated his life with an Open House and a Sailpast of The Old Boathouse on May 21. This year’s Festival – and many Festivals to come – is another celebration of his dedication to providing access to the water for all while preserving the artifacts and skills of maritime heritage.
We all are here because of what he and his wife, Colleen, began nearly half a century ago when they started renting small wooden boats from the decks of their 1901 floating home, where the coffeepot was always on. So, on Dick’s behalf, we invite you to enjoy our annual tribute to wooden boats, to the people who design and build them and the traditions that surround them. Fair winds, Dick.
