The 4 Pillars of Mastery: How The Top 1% of Entrepreneurs Think Success Implementation Guide


Dear colleague, Socrates said that the quality of a person’s life will always be in direct proportion to the quality of question they are willing to ask of themselves. The quality of question we ask determines the quality of answer we receive. As Ralph Waldo Emerson noted: ‘when we have arrived at the question, the answer is already near.’ For the vast majority of entrepreneurs, the problem isn’t so much about asking poor quality questions, although for some that’s certainly the case, the biggest problem for most entrepreneurs is not asking the question at all. Your Success Implementation Guide contains a certain kind of question that brings about greater self-discovery and clarity for each of the strategies revealed in the 4 Pillars. This inquisitive, explorative type of enquiry will enable you to think far more effectively into your existing results and what is creating them, so that you can improve how you think into the results you intend to experience in your business and your personal life. It’s about improving the quality of your thinking and becoming increasingly self-aware to accelerate the accomplishment of your entrepreneurial goals. I have deliberately limited the number of questions relating to each pillar to 5 or 6. In reflecting upon them, you may find further questions spring to mind. Should that happen to you, I strongly suggest you immediately write the question down and reflect upon it before moving to the next in the document. Of course, the ideal situation would be to ask questions in real time, however, as we’re not collaborating in person, I can assure you that if you engage this guided process with an open mind and a spirit of genuine curiosity, the time you invest will be rewarded handsomely. In answering these questions, you’ll relate the power of the advanced thinking strategies found in the 4 Pillars of Mastery to your unique set of circumstances. By doing so, you are behaving in the manner of the most highly successful and wealthy entrepreneurs. And that brings me to share one of the most important truths of life. Pillar 1: Develop the Owner Not The Business

1. What do you really believe about your potential? Be brutally honest as you answer this question when I prompt you in the video.


2. Given the opportunity to grow your business is entirely dependant upon how much of your potential is expressed, what does your answer to question 1 reveal to you?


3. What was your biggest take-away from Pillar 1?


4. What specifically will change in your day-to-day activities as a consequence of your new understanding?


5. If you were to prioritise improvement over activity in your business tomorrow, what would you be doing differently?


6. What are the implications of these changes on your short, medium and long-term goals?


Pillar 2: Influencing At Cause Not Effect

1: Name the top 3 results in both your personal and business life that you’d like to improve. Write them down in a notebook. For each one, answer the following questions:

i) What is the primary cause of that outcome?


ii) What have you done that is different to what you normally do, in order to achieve these changes?


iii) What’s stopped you from improving this aspect of your life?


iv) What could you do differently to change the outcome? Have no limits in your thinking here: let your imagination run wild. Be open to possibilities and be willing to think the ‘ridiculous’ – no answer is irrelevant, there is no right or wrong, and no one is judging you.


v) What else could you do?

vi) What would you suggest to a friend if they were in your situation?


vii) Think of the wisest person you know, either someone

you know personally or someone you have never met who you admire for their wisdom: for each result, what would he or she suggest you do?


viii) What has been your greatest learn from Pillar 2 and this line of enquiry?


Pillar 3: Focus On Potential Not Performance

1. What aspects of your business and personal life reflect that you focus on potential rather than performance?


2. If you were spending more time focusing on your potential rather than your performance, what would you be doing differently in your typical working day?


3. What impact would the change you’ve highlighted have on your business and personal life?


4. What are the specific changes that you need to make so that you can prioritise time focusing on your potential rather than your existing performance?


5. Write out 3 activities that you are willing to commit to undertake in the next month, which focus exclusively on developing your potential.


Pillar 4: Decision Making: Know The Why Not The How

1. Reflect back on the most important decisions you’ve made in your business in the past 12 months. Given your new understanding, what would you have done differently?


2. What would have been the implication of doing things in this new way?


3. Now apply the same line of enquiry to your personal life.


4. In what area of your business are you resisting making a decision?

5. How is that serving you?


6. Now apply the same line of enquiry for your personal life.


7. List the most important decisions you need to make in the next 4 weeks: given your new understanding, what action will you take?

Congratulations! One of the world’s greatest entrepreneurs, Henry Ford, said ‘thinking is the hardest work there is, which is why so few people partake in it’. In a single sentence, Ford got straight to the heart of what separates highly successful entrepreneurs from those who work very hard and yet accomplish mediocrity at best, failure at worst. By completing this guided process, you’ve demonstrated that you’re willing to do what few entrepreneurs are willing to do, so that you can accomplish what few accomplish. Your return on investment is not just the clarity, insight and direction you’ve already benefited from because of how you’ve applied yourself to the process, but the ideas and solutions that are still to be revealed to you for following this line of enquiry. This is only the beginning. Return to these questions again and again, and create a time for thinking into your daily schedule. I recommend first thing in the morning, when the mind is recharged and empty of yesterday’s ‘noise’.
