It is really hard to be at your best all the time, but the person you scream at unnecessarily doesn’t care about that, and probably won’t give you the benefit of the doubt. I vividly remember my Dad telling me when I was a freshman in high school that “it takes three good impressions to undo one bad one”. I found this frustrating at the time, why should I have to work so hard, but I have found his advice to be true. So what can we do? Are we doomed to be misunderstood and evaluated as the person we are on our worst days? Maybe not. It’s unfortunate that it can take tragedy to make us step back and evaluate how we are living our own lives, but I feel it is important to do this. So I am issuing a challenge to myself and I hope you will join me. For me it starts with being mindful. Do I just say “hi” to a 4-H member or do I stop to ask about their day. “Hi” is pretty easy and does little to form an impression either way with a youth. It is better than nothing, but I think I can reach for more. Then we have the inevitable instance of conflict. It can be really hard to pause before reacting to an infuriating situation, but the end result will be so much better if we train our minds in this way. I for one have never looked back on an argument and thought “wow, I’m really glad I lost my temper back there”. I have however looked back and regretted not taking a minute to think through my response first. Being mindful of how I speak to others is the first piece of building myself a better brand. The next piece of this challenge is paying attention to when I interact with others. Do I wait until there is a problem and then attempt to help, or do I reach out from the moment we meet and let them know that I am here for them whatever the situation. Striving for frequent, positive interactions can do a lot to build a trusting relationship and establish yourself as a person others can rely on in good and bad times. Each person’s brand will be different. I am sure each of us can think of a special person we have met who leaves each person they interact with a little better than they found them in one way or another. I challenge you to take a look at yourself and ask “What is my brand?”. Do you like the answer? Robin Mudd of Leeton and is a sophomore at Leeton High School. Jordan has been a member of 4-H for 8 years and currently serves as her club’s president. She describes the program as a youth group for young minds to explore and expand an interest. Jordan has a very specific passion in 4-H; showing livestock, and credits this

opportunity as the reason she joined the program. “My favorite project is beef. My beef project has helped find what is hopefully going to be my career path,” says Jordan. Other projects Jordan has tried include photography, game boarding, and shooting sports. The most important thing these projects have taught her is how to be a leader. Jordan has used these leadership skills in her role as president and as a camp counselor. As president of the Shawnee Indians she says when she has to miss a meeting the opportunity is created for other members to step up. “We help each other grow,” says Jordan. She says helping younger members as a camp counselor is the most exciting thing she has done in her 4-H career. As she continues with 4-H, Jordan plans to continue to lead the Shawnee Indians and help to mentor younger members. Beyond, her 4-H years, she believes the leadership skills she learned will still apply in her career. For those not yet in 4-H, Jordan says they should join to gain life skills such as leadership, public speaking and effectively communicating with others. Jordan’s Club Leaders say she was chosen as the outstanding member because of the leadership she has shown as president and a camp counselor. They say she is also a great mentor for the younger members and never hesitates to help them achieve their goals; all with a smile on her face.

Presentation Day Presentation Day will be June 25 at the United Methodist Church in Clinton. Mark your calendars and start planning now!

Public Speaking Success Congratulations to our County-Wide 4-H Public Speaking group!!!! They started working on their speeches at the end of January and have met once or twice per week since then. Madelynn Ritter, Jordan Crooks, Leia Love, Riley Lawrence and Brendon Engeman competed at the Optimist Oratorical Contest in Warrensburg on March 3rd, and Kennedy and Chezney Early competed at the Clinton contest on March 6th. In the Warrensburg Girls Contest, Madelynn placed 1st, Jordan placed 2nd and Leia placed 3rd. In the Boys Contest, Brendon placed 2nd and Riley placed 3rd. In the Clinton contest, Kennedy placed 1st in the Girls Contest. Madelynn and Kennedy will move on to the next level of competition. Caleb Hull has worked hard, too, but was unable to compete due to becoming a new uncle that week. Good job, everyone!!!! I'm sooo proud of all of you!!!! Youth and Community asked to help “Kids Pulling for Kids” 4-Her Zach Jones has coordinated the “Kids Pulling for Kids” program as his 4-H service project for his first time. He has taken over the service project from his older brother Alex Jones who coordinated the program for three years but is now a freshman in college. Zach will combine his efforts with The Month of the Child. The pull is now underway through April 30th. This is a collection program of aluminum pull-tabs that will be recycled to help support the Ronald McDonald House at Children’s Mercy Hospital. Collecting pull tabs is a great way for children to learn how they can make a positive difference in other children and families lives, along with helping the environment. “Pulling” for the House That Love Built expands public awareness and fosters the development of good citizenship. Hawthorn Bank has generously agreed to donate $.50 per pound collected and give a $500.00 bonus if the goal of 1 MILLION tabs is met. To help make this “pull” successful, we need EVERYONE to be pulling. Tabs off of beverage cans, pet food cans, soup, vegetable and fruit cans are for the most part all 100% aluminum and can be donated to the pull. Please leave donations in Ziploc bags, coffee cans or plastic lidded containers. The following locations have drop off containers: All Clinton Hawthorn Banks, the Clinton Community Center, Clinton Senior Citizen Center, Clinton United Methodist Church, VFW Post 1894 and the Henry County University of
