The IWWG Summer
Conference is our
signature event. This
summer we celebrate
our 39th year of coming together, with over
thirty workshops ranging from three to five
days in length and spanning fiction, poetry,
memoir/personal narrative, screenwriting,
playwriting, writing as performance, social
justice, and mind/body/spirit. Critique
sessions are offered in fiction, poetry, and
nonfiction, and five 90-minute salons will be
offered this year, with facilitated discussion
on such topics as how to start submission
parties and how to
build magical realism
into your work. The
week’s events will also
include two book
fairs and nightly open readings. To learn

The IWWG, founded in 1976, is a network for the personal and
professional empowerment of women through writing. No portfolio
is required. The IWWG has established a remarkable record of
achievement in the publishing world, as well as in circles where
lifelong learning and personal transformation are valued for their
own sake. The IWWG nurtures and supports holistic thinking by
recognizing the logic of the heart—the ability to perceive the subtle
interconnections between people, events and emotions— alongside
conventional logic. To learn more about us, visit our website at

Building a community of women who write.
I felt like I was accepted into
a community, respected for
who I am at the core. I went
in wondering who I was and
came out knowing I am a
poet and a writer.

Opening Night Keynote Address: Nancy Giles
NANCY GILES is an actor, comedian, and writer, with two Emmy Awards for her on-air
commentaries on the acclaimed "CBS News Sunday Morning." She toured with Chicago’s famed
Second City comedy troupe; was Jay Thomas’ sidekick on his “Morning Show” on Jammin’ 105 in
New York City; and was the announcer and co-host of the cult favorite "Fox After
Breakfast." Nancy's written four solo shows and is working on a collection of true stories called
"Notes of a Negro Neurotic."
Giles has offered her social and political perspectives on MSNBC's "Hardball with Chris Matthews,"
"Melissa Harris-Perry," "All In with Chris Hayes," "Politics Nation with Al Sharpton," and "Up
with Steve Kornacki." On topics from politics and race to pop culture and body image, Giles says, “I
want to make people laugh and I want to entertain them, but I also want to provoke thought and
discussion.” Giles is a funny, perceptive, and provocative observer of today’s world.

OPEN READINGS
One of the most beloved traditions of the IWWG Summer
Conference is our nightly Open Readings. Every night (except
Opening Night and Monday, which we take off for a much needed
rest!) conference attendees gather to hear their peers read.
Readings are three minutes in length (about 250-300 words),
rigorously timed and enthusiastically received. If you’ve never
read your work aloud before, this is the time to do it: in a relaxed,
inviting and supportive
atmosphere.
