Saturday 11/9Stephen KrashenFundamentals of language acquisition: What we have learned in the last 45 years.A review of the fundamental hypotheses that summarize the research, and the implications for practice. My view is that these hypotheses are not only well supported with evidence, but they also make teaching and acquiring languages more pleasant and consistently produce better results.
Hugh DellarSPACE IS THE PLACE: Making magic in the EFL classroomThe real joy of teaching lies in the unexpected turns that lessons suddenly take, the stories, jokes and banter that suddenly burst forth from our students. Learning how to create the space in which this kind of magic can occur takes time and requires a keen focus on language. In this talk, I’ll be unpicking the process.
John de JongEnglish Language Examinations Dupery and MythsParents in Greece are made to believe that in order to ensure the future of their kids they need an international certificate of their Eng-lish language skills and because the testing agencies claim their test is better than those provided by other agencies and also because it is easier to obtain a B2 or even a C1 level with some tests than with others, parents – if they have the money – tend to err on the safe side and require their kids to sit for at least two or three international certificates.
Unfortunately, the claims and promises provided by the test publishers are seldom true. In this
presentation will talk about false claims and misleading promises, even from the KPG exams run by the Hellenic Ministry of Education.
Sunday 12/9Tyna ConstantopoulouRemoving Barriers for Special Educa-tional Needs StudentsThis presentation explores the challenges special educational needs students face during learning foreign languages and discusses possible ways to eliminate barriers. Specific accommodations for both online and face-to-face lessons are examined through explicit examples, while guidance on how to implement differentiated instruction and how to adapt materials and lessons is emphasized.
Katherine ReillyWriting for Young LearnersTeaching young learners how to write is a meticulous task which requires our unwavering devotion to detail, as it is considered by many to be the culmination of a multitude of well-de-veloped language skills. Writing at a young age not only influences the learner to develop and express his critical thought, but will also inspire him to practice and embed the key elements of the target language.
Stephen KrashenSecrets of writingMore writing will not result in better writing form: Writing form is the result of reading. But writing can help us solve problems and can make us smarter. “Meaning is what you end up with, not what you start out with” (Peter Elbow). The key to making this happen is REVISION.

Panel Discussion
The ELT 2021 INFLUENCERS discuss the new school yearThe pandemic has overturned traditional assumptions in education. What becomes clear is that the frameworks that previously worked for education are no longer guaranteed to function.
• Can flipped learning be exactly the right model for where education is heading? E.g. Traditional frameworks assume that we operate in a scarcity model of information; flipped learning assumes that information is abundant and (mostly) freely available.
• We used to take meeting in person in a classroom for granted; will we ever be able to do that again, even once the pandemic is over?
• Will we continue to assess students through traditional timed testing any time we want? Has the pandemic dealt a death blow to the entire concept of timed testing?
• Are pedagogical assumptions of traditional frameworks now out of the window? Can we still assume that we can keep technology at arms’ length, that students have empty heads, or that students can’t teach themselves things?
• Once the pandemic continues to ease, and we begin to start making our way back to the physical classroom, we would try to get “back to normal”. How ‘normal’ will ‘back to normal’ be?
• Would it be a tragic mistake to exit this horrific time in history by wasting the opportunity to get rid of outdated models – and all their associated injustices, inequities, and inefficiencies – and put on something better for our students?

• What strategies and mindsets should we consider to make a hybrid learning environment as productive as possible?

• What role will physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being play for those students who will be obliged to attend classes from home in order for meaningful learning to occur? How can teachers support learner well-being in a hybrid model? • What types of activities should be best suited for online vs. in-person learning in a hybrid environment?

Escape Rooms for the English ClassroomEnglish language learning has changed focus to a more student-centred model, placing learners at the centre of teaching. The use of an escape room is one such innovative learner-focused activity, in which a team of players co-operatively discover clues in order to progress through the challenge. Escape rooms can be used in English language learning as a tool for introducing a new topic both in a f2f and an online setting.

Adaptive testing and LanguageCert Test of English (LTE) This talk describes LanguageCert’s non-linear Test of English (LTE) ‘adaptive’ test – how it looks and how it works. Whereas most tests are viewed by teachers and students as a linear set of items that a student grinds through from the first item to the last, an ‘adaptive’ test adapts – in real time – to a student’s responses and moves to a higher or lower level to adjust to the student’s real level of proficiency. Following a brief overview of comput-er adaptive testing (CAT), and of how CATs function and operate, the talk outlines the LanguageCert adaptive test. The talk closes with a comment on what taking a CAT means for a student, and how the LanguageCert LTE CAT compares with its pen-and-paper sister.
