2010–2011 Season

O ur words, with age and experience, take on a very different meaning when uttered in a different context and time. So it is with the Kids in Spelling Bee.

Their stories happen in the midst of their chaotic lives—their individual and col-lective “pandemonium” better known as puberty. But in the context of the Spelling Bee, the mirrors from which they see themselves at age 11 or 12, may wind up being enlightening steps as they find their way from pubescent insecurity to adulthood. If a child is taught that Jesus is her personal friend, then it only makes sense that she “hears” Him speaking to her in her own words; the boy whose puberty gets in the way of his spelling concentration can only attempt to understand that confusion in the context of his own innocence. Spelling Bee is much more than a wonderful book by Rachel Sheinkin with bril-liant music and lyrics by William Finn. It is not just about the words the kids were able to spell, but what the characters learned about themselves on the journey to the Spelling Bee. It’s about adolescent demons like the pressure to be “number one”, parental indifference, imagined love, the need to belong, being heard, kids’ acts of kindness to each other, winning and losing, and, oh yes, and how the spellers all have found safety in the world of words—the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee! And it’s about having a wonderful time in the theatre! We have assembled an amazing cast and crew whose talent and powerful performances you will re-member for many seasons. We three Mullers , Al and Dominée (Codirectors), and Alison (Costume De-signer) and son-in-law, Paul Kimball (Vocal Director and “Panch”) have had a great time plotting with Wendy (Choreographer), Brian (Scene Designer), Terry (Light-ing Designer) and Daryn (Audio Designer) to guarantee that SCT’s production of Spelling Bee will be a joy for both audiences and the company of performers. All of this would not have happened without Jim Coleman’s splendid musical direction and keyboard genius plus generous amounts of encouragement and support.

Meet the CastJacob BronsonChip Tolentino

Jacob Bronson’s pre-miere performance at SCT was as Linus in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and since that time he has performed in The Full

Monty and Cinderella. His outstanding acting and singing have been recognized with a Willy Award for his role as Dave in The Full Monty. In addition to his work at Stockton Civic Theatre, he has per-formed with Fresno’s Good Company Players as Marcellus Washburn in The Music Man, and as the Witch in Hansel and Gretl. When not auditioning, in re-hearsal, or onstage, Jacob is employed in yet another role at Starbucks.

Shawn J. CarringtonMitch Mahoney

“Dedicated to Shanda D., who two years later is still cheering me on from her seat in heaven.”Shawn had lent his wonderful talent to a

wide variety of Stockton Civic Theatre productions, including The Piano Les-son, The Secret Affairs of Mildred Wild, The Full Monty, Annie Get Your Gun, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicol-or Dreamcoat. He has won two Willie Awards and been nominated an addi-tional four times. Outside SCT, Shawn has been active with Smiler’s Comedy Playhouse and Kiley’s Dinner Theatre.

He is a teacher at Kindercare Learn-ing Centers, and lives with his husband Dann in Stockton.

Eddie Hargreaves William Barfeé“I need to thank my family, friends and girlfriend, Jennifer, for their support. She reminded me to do that. Oh, and it’s pronounced Har-GRAVES.” Eddie, who consistently placed second in his real life school spelling bees, can claim a proud history of performances with Stockton Civic Theatre since 2005. He acted in Over the River and Through the Woods, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He has performed in Man of La Mancha, Urinetown and The Mu-sic Man at Delta College. Eddie holds a Communications Degree from Univer-sity of the Pacific, and serves as Webmas-ter for the Haggin Museum.

Paul KimballVice Principal Panch“Thanks to SCT for giving me the chance to act again. I love it!” Paul Kimball is well-known by audiences for the many times he has played the roles of Musical Director, and Conductor in the orchestra pit, but this show brings a great surprise to many as he unpacks his impressive skills as an actor for the first time at SCT since Crazy for You. A

graduate of Berkeley High School and University of the Pacific, Paul teaches music at Lincoln High School and con-ducts the St. John’s Chamber Orchestra. She and her partner Andrew Walls have a child, Destiny.

Amanda Jayne MelhuishLagainne SchwartzandGrubenniere

Your Gun and as Joanna in I Remember Mama, and in the tense drama The Children’s Hour. Credits outside SCT include Urinetown and The Sound of Music. Most recently, she won 1st Place in the Modesto High School Talent Show. She is a Senior at Modesto High, where she maintains a 4.25 Grade Point Average.

as a Theatre major, and worked as a cos-tumer at Disneyland. Her first perfor-mance at SCT was as a child in the 1987 production of Charlotte’s Webb. Since that time she has appeared in Crazy for You and Blithe Spirit, as well as in Delta College productions of Oklahoma and The Crucible. She creates wedding invi-tations in her spare time.

Al MullerCo-directorAl Muller’s 49 years of artistic contri-butions to SCT began as a costume designer in 1961 and continued as a scene designer, an actor, and a director of musicals and plays. Never one to shy away from difficult scripts, provocative

themes, or casting and staging challeng-es, the retired Delta College director’s work has garnered 11 “Willie Awards” for such productions as Kiss Me, Kate, Promis-es-Promises, Song For A Nisei Fisherman, Pi-ano Lesson, Follies, Big River, Crazy For You and more. Hon-ored in 2006 with the “Applause Award” for Exemplary Volunteer Service, Al has served SCT in many leadership capaci-ties, most recently as Board President for 4 years.

Formerly a high school theatre arts teacher, she earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Dramatic Art and earned her Doctorate in Educational Ad-ministration. She's ecstatic to be working again with her father, her sister Alison and her husband Paul in Spelling Bee. The Economics of Community TheatreOne might assume that with nearly all seats filled at every performance, a not-for-profit theatre would have plenty of money.

Unfortunately, the revenue from tickets covers only about 40% of the theatre’s total expenses. And, without the generosity of the many volunteers who donate their time and talent—from the actors and set builders to the ushers and stage crews—it would not even cover that.

For other needs, we must reach out to the community for funding of operating expenses such as insurance, building maintenance, office supplies and postage; as well as the many educational and cultural programs we offer beyond our main stage. If we are to continue to offer this expanded program of theatre arts, we must turn to you.
