Scripture Reflection

24th Sunday in Ordinary Time

"The Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, 'This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.'" Jesus knew these self-righteous religious leaders were complaining. And he knew they needed to learn a lesson. So, in addition to giving a lived example of welcoming the company of "tax collectors and sinners," Jesus also directly taught the skeptics about the importance of welcoming those who have been lost. Today's Gospel gives a powerhouse lineup of three parables that all teach a similar message: rejoice over the lost sheep, rejoice over the lost coin, and rejoice over the return of the lost son. The theme can be summarized in the simple directive: rejoice don't reject. When someone who isn't part of the "fold" appears in church, this is cause for rejoicing! It should not be cause for gossip, sideways glances, or nervous whispers about what to do or say. Rather a genuine smile and word of welcome would be in order at the very least, and a heartfelt invitation to join the community would be totally appropriate. Too often we become complacent about our Christian company. We get used to seeing the same people every Sunday and forget about the "lost" men and women who are outside the bounds of our comfort zone. Jesus gives us the image of an active shepherd who goes "after the lost one until he finds it," and a diligent widow who will "sweep the house, searching carefully" until she finds her coin. He tells us of a father who "ran to his son, embraced and kissed him," in spite of the separation they had faced. We too are called to take initiative in seeking out those who are lost, and to rejoice heartily when they finally do come back home. LPI, Inc.

Las lecturas del Evangelio de este domingo están enfocadas en la ternura y misericordia de Dios hacia su pueblo que tropieza cayendo en la infidelidad. En la primera lectura llama la atención la capacidad de diálogo e intercesión de Moisés hacia Dios abogando por el pueblo de Israel que había caído en el pecado de idolatría. A Dios no le gusta el mal, y aparentemente está enojado, pero siempre acaba manifestando su misericordia. San Pablo, por su parte, nos da ejemplo evidente de la fuerza que la gracia de Dios nos da y se ha manifestada en su Hijo Jesucristo. El Papa Francisco en la Bula de la Misericordia (No. 1), nos recuerda que "Jesucristo es el rostro de la misericordia del Padre. El misterio de la fe cristiana parece encontrar su síntesis en esta palabra. Ella se ha vuelto viva, visible y ha alcanzado su culmen en Jesús de Nazaret". ¿Ves el rostro de Dios en los que te rodean? ¿Crees que este rostro se encuentra en tu familia, tus compañeros de trabajo, tu comunidad? ¿De qué forma respondemos en las diferentes circunstancias de la vida? 911. For years, those numbers simply meant a call for help. Now they also remind us of September 11, 2001, the date of the worst terrorist attack on the United States of America and one of the deadliest days ever on American soil. In October 2001, the United States Congress passed a joint resolution designating that every September 11th be observed as "Patriot Day." The resolution requests that U.S. government entities and interested organizations and individuals display the flag of the United States at half staff on Patriot Day and that the people of the United States observe a moment of silence in honor of the individuals who lost their lives as a result of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Often people attend Mass at All Souls for several years, but never register. Registering here is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and to make a commitment to the life of All Souls Church.

Being a registered parishioner makes the process much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school or religious education registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals. A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings, too. Church law advises that territories or boundaries no longer limit parish registration. All Souls accepts anyone who wants to share in the life of the parish regardless of where they live. In order to register, you need to complete a registration card. A few weeks ago, widespread disastrous flooding in southern Louisiana left 13 people dead and damaged more than 100,000 homes. In the aftermath, the people of Louisiana

responded with hope and perseverance, as volunteers — including members of the Knights of Columbus — came to lend a hand in the recovery. Victims of the flooding are still in dire need of help, however. Severe mold is taking over the homes that are still standing, which could lead to severe allergic reactions and fatal respiratory seizures. The cost of the repairs to fight such damage is yet another blow to the already devastated communities. In addition, many of these homeowners do not have flood insurance to help cover these costs. These people desperately need your assistance. The Knights of Columbus, as a national Catholic fraternal organization, is taking a leadership role in helping those in the affected communities. What an honor for us to have lived in such a time as this beautiful, holy, humble, and simply amazing woman of God! So many of us want to make a difference. Some of us feel a call to do something more, and others wanting to leave their imprint on the world. All holy and very good desires. Mother Teresa tells us to “do little things with great love.” She modeled this for us. She taught this to all her daughters in the convent.
