There is an excitement and readiness for our spring break. I hope that all of you are excited to have a time with family and friends as we take the next week off. Here are a few things that are happening in April around Index school. We will be out of school all of next week (April 1-5).

We will also be involving our students in three arts activities this coming month:

April 12 th we will have R. English come to our school and share her skills in pottery with our students. She is a skilled potter and is willing to share this art form with us.

April 18 th our students will be sharing their poetry skills with people in the town of Index. We call this day “Poem in Your Pocket”. Students will be sharing their poetry as they walk through the town.

April 25 th the older students (grades 4-8) will be attending a play at 5th Avenue Theatre. The title of this play is “The Lightning Thief”.

We will also be conducting our State Testing during this month (April 18-May 3).

This window of time is an important component for assessing our students and their progress in Math, English Language Arts and Science. We also recognize that our students’ value is not measured by how they perform on a specific test. This gives us important comparisons to know how to best support them in their learning.

I wanted to thank each of you for taking the time to come to your child’(s) conference(s) in March. We count it a privilege to work alongside your students as they work to become problem-solvers. It is also exciting to see how far they progress over the year. If you have other questions or things

you are wondering about-, please contact your child’s teacher(s) or myself. We are here to be an encouragement in your child’s life and hopefully inspire them to continue as life-long learners.

All the best,

Brad Jernberg

Superintendent for Index

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Back Pack Program

It’s a simple fact: A child’s chance for a bright tomorrow starts with getting enough food to eat today. But in America, 1 in 6 children may not know where they will get their next meal. For the more than 12 million kids in the U.S. facing hunger, getting the energy they need to learn and grow can be a daily challenge.Watch for the next Bear News on the first Friday of next month!

If you would like to sign up for our Back Pack Food Program, please return the completed form, that went home with your child, to the school office.

Almost anyone in good health (no colds or flu) who weighs more than 110 pounds, is 18 years or older may donate.

First time 16 or 17 year old male donors who weigh at least 114 pounds and First time 16 or 17 year old female donors who weigh at least 125 pounds may donate with a Bloodworks Northwest permission slip signed by a parent or guardian at a mobile blood drive; this is to improve our young first time donors experience and minimize chances of vasovagal reaction.  (16 or 17 year old male and female donors who weigh at least 114 pounds may donate with a Bloodworks Northwest permission slip signed by a parent or guardian at a BloodworksNW donor center.)

We encourage all donors to eat and drink plenty of fluids before donating.

The Index School is joining up with the Chief Walters in hosting a blood drive on Thursday, April 11th. We are looking for 40 volunteers. Please call Linda at 360-793-1330 to set up a time. Thank you.

Did you know that each time you donate you are helping to save three people’s lives?

The Tooth Fairy Writes:

Greetings, Parents! Now that we have survived the worst of flu season, we are going to be reviewing some aspects of hygiene with our students. The school nurse Lynne Kelly will be teaching toothbrushing classes on May 8th to pre-K through 4th grades.

Do your children have an opportunity to see you practice oral hygiene? Let them know how important it is, not just for a happy smile but general health.

Special thanks to Kathy Corson for reaching out to Colgate's Bright Smiles, Bright Futures, and Dr. Rabbit and the Tooth Defenders.  Your child will come home with a new toothbrush and a new appreciation for flossing.

If you have any questions or concerns about class content, please do not hesitate to reach out to Lynne at [email protected]

THE GIST

Leaving your reusable water bottle unwashed for days or refilling it before it dries completely can lead to bacterial growth.

EXPERT INSIGHT

If you don’t wash your bottle frequently enough, you could get sick more often, says Tony Kim, Ph.D., assistant professor at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. In a study he co-authored last year, he looked at the germs in 90 reusable bottles and found that coliform bacteria like E. coli, which can cause stomach bugs, was among the most common.

Coliform and other strains are more likely to breed if there’s saliva (from backwash) present or if you keep your

bottle at room temperature, like on your desk, throughout the day. It’s even worse if you drink out of an opaque container since the inside is dark and moist, prime conditions for bacterial growth.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Rinsing, even if you use soap, doesn’t do much. To really get rid of bacteria, you need to scrub the bottle’s inside as well as its mouthpiece, straw, and top, Kim says. Ideally you’d wash yours using a brush or sponge with a bleach-based cleaning product every time you drink a bottle-full and let it air dry pre-refill—even if that means multiple times per day.

At the very least, always dump out leftover H2O to remove some of the germs left behind by your saliva. Better yet, invest in a self-cleaning bottle like LARQ that will do the work for you.

Ms. Rachel’s Students Write:

Leprechauns are tricky. When people try to catch them out of a trap they will run away before you can catch them. They live by a rainbow in the USA. They live in other places too. I wonder if they come out to play tricks at night, I don’t think they do. If I caught one I would put him in a cage and keep him. I would try to make him laugh so that he has to give me his pot of gold.Walter, KLeprechauns like rainbows. They slide down them to get to their pot of gold. They live at the end of the rainbow where they keep their gold. I think that Leprechauns eat salad because it is like a rainbow. It has all the colors of a rainbow like red, green, and yellow. They run around and play tag. I wonder if Leprechauns can swim? How do Leprechauns always trick the trap and trick their way out of it?Aubree, KLeprechauns like gold. They keep it at the end of the rainbow. They pinch you if you don’t wear green on St Patrick’s Day. I can see them coming because I always keep my eyes open, even when I’m sleeping. They live at the end of rainbow with their pot of gold at the end of the world. I think for fun they just play with their gold. I

wonder big their house is. I think it seems giant to them, but to us it would be really small.Emily, KLeprechauns wear green clothes and a green top hat. They love gold and want all of it for themselves. They do tricks on people. If you have a box and powder they might step in it and spread it all over. If I ever catch one I ask them where they put their gold so I can be rich.Colton, 1st
