There have been plenty of major themes to occupy the minds of investors in the last few years, with obviously the shape of Brexit as one. Now the shape of economic recovery from the virus Covid-19 presents another one. In contrast to Brexit, Covid-19 is a global phenomenon and while commentators may want to compare and contrast differing national reactions and solutions, it is the economic consequences, which most concern investors.
While companies seek help from their respective governments, it is noticeable that it is indebted companies which are at the front of the queue and in the UK that is certainly the case. Perhaps we will all learn the true value of equity as economic recovery gathers pace. Perhaps too the UK government will rescind the favourable tax treatment of interest and promote equity as the most appropriate source of capital.
That is for the future and the review of the lessons to learn from the last few months, although small companies already know that truth. AIM has reached its 25th birthday this June and in the five months to the end of May 2020 has raised more equity capital than in the equivalent period in 2019.
Shareholders and other investors have been supporting the positive cases made by management teams to grow their businesses. AIM will continue to play a vital part in the life of small companies and their growth ambitions and it will continue to support them in different economic circumstances.
AIM, in the last 25 years, has itself grown to be an essential part of the economic fabric and wellbeing of the UK and remains the example of a smallcap market, which others seek to emulate. There is every reason to believe that its provision of equity capital will generate good returns for the next 25 years. The future is something to look forward to.

GUEST SPEAKER - CLAIRE NOYCE
Peter Dickson is the UK’s most prolific voiceover artist. He has enjoyed a stellar career spanning almost 40 years. His unique and powerful vocal delivery is the choice of global TV entertainment mogul Simon Cowell. His voice has featured on “Britain’s Got Talent” and “The X Factor” in the UK. In a national poll, he was voted as one of the top three iconic UK voices of the decade. From vocal work on radio and TV commercials, commentary for big international stadium events, blue chip corporates, multimedia games, animation and prime-time TV shows – Peter Dickson a.k.a “Voiceover Man” is at the top of everyone’s list.
Claire, Hybridan’s founding partner and CEO, was previously at Nomura in the UK Small Cap Life Sciences and Technology Sales and Trading team, and prior to joining Nomura, Claire was a mid-cap equity analyst at Lazard, with a significant involvement in IPOs and capital market transactions. Claire started her career as an analyst and consultant at Datamonitor covering large cap companies. Claire is on the Board of the Quoted Companies Alliance as a non-executive Director and is also Deputy Chairman of the QCA Board. Claire also heads up the Small Cap Awards judging panel of investors and advisors as Chairman.
Claire has a Double Honours Degree from Manchester University, where she also undertook some postgraduate studies. She is fluent in French and German, and actively involved in a number of groups and government initiatives to empower women in the workforce and on Boards. Claire remains a mentor at Manchester University.
