Loch Mess Monster Upcycle Challenge 2019

The Loch Mess Monster Upcycle Challenge 2019 is a City of Armadale schools recycled sculpture competition associated with the annual Armadale Highland Gathering. The Armadale Highland Gathering event will take place in Minnawarra Park, Armadale on Sunday, 6 October 2019. Nearly 40 Year 5/6 students from Grovelands Primary School are participating in this challenge. Last Monday, Julie Fearns-Pheasant, an artist from City of Armadale visited us to hold a workshop on joining techniques and getting the frame ready for our monster. We were given a goody bag to design and build using the materials in the bag. Students enjoyed this session. Here are some of their creations. Mrs Shorey.

Last Friday we thanked our NAPLAN Technical Support team with a pizza lunch supplied by Mrs Kapuscik. These students, along with Mr Brown, volunteered their time by arriving early to school to set up the iPads each day for NAPLAN. Their assistance helped us to have a very smooth experience as we transitioned to NAPLAN Online.

Welcome to the Week 6 Edition of the Grovelander. I trust that all our families and friends enjoyed the extended long weekend. Rest assured that all staff were working hard on the School Development Day as they engaged in training for our new Whole School Writing strategy – Talk for Writing. This valuable program will develop our students’ skills in Writing and Oral Language.

I have two important dates that I need all community members to put in their calendars: Friday June 21 – Grovelands Big Breakfast – come and join us for a morning of festivities (and a cooked

breakfast) from 7.45 am. Wednesday September 25 – Open Night & 40th Anniversary Celebration. Our annual Open Night will

be a bigger then ever event as we turn it into a celebration of our 40 years of service in the Camillo Community.

There are still places available for our Fathering Project Lego Creation Event. This will be held between 5.30 pm and 6.30 pm on Tuesday, June 11 in the Science Room. Registration forms are available from Leah at the front desk.

Last Friday, the P & C held “Superboss Day” to fundraise for

the Heart Kids Foundation to assist in the fight against

children’s heart defects. $177.00 was raised, Thank you.

During Terms 2 and 3, Grovelands Primary School is running operation Christmas Child. This is an initiative run by the not for profit organisation, Samaritan’s Purse. Samaritan’s Purse assists in disaster relief both domestically and internationally. They also help support third world countries to improve living, health and education conditions. Finally, they provide shoeboxes filled with gifts at Christmas time.

Christmas boxes full of love are donated to the organisation by people from all walks of life. The children receiving them may never have owned a teddy bear or had access to a pencil or notebook. The boxes are filled with a variety of items and presented to children during Christmas. Families of Grovelands PS are invited to participate in any way possible to complete or donate these gifts. Shoeboxes need be provided by the end of Term 3 for shipment preparation in Term 4. Please get on board for this worthwhile cause. Any queries see Mrs Randall or Mrs Scaddan.

Shoeboxes

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books.

Now in its 19th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant and fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Pre-primary to Year 6.

NSS is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association.

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. This year’s book is Alpacas with Maracas written and illustrated by Matt Cosgrove. Mrs Kapuscik reading to the Year 5/6

ROBOTICS CLUB - 2019 Our Robotics Club runs every Monday from 3.00 pm to 4.00 pm for Years 3 - 6 students. Robotics Club is working towards the exploration, making and programming of Lego robots. Students will develop skills in programming their robots to meet specific design challenges in preparation for our first annual First Lego League Challenge that will be held later in the year. The major objectives for the Robotics Club are to engage the children in computer programming and problem solving activities to encourage creativity and initiative and also to encourage participation in STEM activities at Grovelands Primary School. Message from School Board Chair. On behalf of the School Board, I would like to express our gratitude to have the opportunity to contribute to The Grovelander. As Board members, we are obliged to act in the best interest of the school and its students. Our responsibilities consist of two major roles, an approval role and an advisory role. The Board contributes to decision making. The Principal consults the Board on issues and takes on its advice prior to making decisions. All decisions and discussions are documented in the Board meeting minutes. The Board meets on average six times during the school year. Two critical aspects of the work of the school Board are transparency and accountability. I am happy to announce that during last week's Board meeting, the Board approved the publishing of the meeting minutes on the school website with immediate effect. Parking Did you know that the “Visitor” Parking Bay in the Staff Carpark is not for parent use. This bay is to be kept free at all times for visits from outside services and deliveries. Ample parking is available on Grovelands Drive, Dollis Way and at the Harold King Centre.

Tip 26 - What boys need

As part of The Fathering Project’s involvement with your school, I will be including helpful tips and ideas for all fathers and father figures. I hope these tips will help, inspire and encourage all fathers and father figures to be the best that they can be, as all fathers and father figures are critically important in every child’s life.

More involved fathers and father figures = better outcomes for children.

Boys need time with fathers and father figures.

Men are automatically role models for boys so be aware of that - you don’t choose to be, you are.

Teach them that revenge anger doesn’t really solve problems, unlike in the movies or on TV.

Speak and role model respect for women.

Encourage physical activity, confidence and a healthy view of competition.

Telling them to “be a man” or “man up” sends the wrong message.

Tell them it is ok to make mistakes, feel sad or cry - tell them when you felt that way as a child.

Don’t spoon feed the boys, help them come up with solutions themselves.

Encourage other mentors in his life.

Define the characteristics of a good man to your son, eg. responsibility, initiative, courage, values, service, integrity, caring and gentle strength.

The Fathering Project is not a counselling service; we are seeking to inspire and equip fathers and father

figures to engage with their children.
