SUMMER LEADS OLH INTO SEASON

This was no easy summer for Prep 7 James Conigliaro who dedicated himself to training for the up-coming sports scene at OLH. Traveling to multiple venues, James’ basketball clinics included one in the Bronx by Kyrie Irving and Rod Strickland who were both NBA players. They are inspiring the next generation of athletes.

James also participated with the Suffolk County Rising Stars program, traveling to the Bronx every Sunday to play some of the best competition on Long Island. One game was against the championship team from Char-lotte NC. Seeing LeBron James and his son

was a highlight. Summer basketball ended with St. Anthony’s basket-ball camp where James learned the value of teamwork and sportsmanship in preparation for nationals. James was the CMSAA Cross-Country champion last season and worked on his skills at a Vermont Nike camp where he met Olympic gold medal runner Andrew Wheating, a 1500m runner for USA. Workouts included running ten miles each day, proper run offs and studies of courses and tracks. Breakout sessions helped participants learn how to be a proper runner off and on the course/track. James athletics goals for the coming year include bringing another banner...or two...back to OLH! From the pen of Prep 8 Scott Kamm: This summer I have been playing my

last year of Little League for Riverhead. My team and I went undefeated for the season, winning eighteen games, including the playoffs and cham-pionship. A great tradition in Little League is the All-Star Game. This year I was one of six from my team elected to play this game. Our team won the game by a few runs. My last baseball team this summer was the Little League World Series team for Riverhead. This team was made of the best players of our league, which also in-cluded another OLH stu-dent, Connor Sayville. I was mainly used as a pinch runner because of my speed around the bases. This team went undefeated winning six games until we arrived at the division championship.

This was the best summer of baseball I have ever had. This is not because my team and I won so many games. It was because I had good teammates and great coaches. One goal set for this spring of 2018 is a divisional win in the CMSAA basketball league….for OLH!

From the ‘Journal of Daniel Hale” (Prep 7): We were fishing all day for sharks but we didn't get any big ones so we decided to real in the lines and go to shore. As I was reeling in one of the rods, the mate saw a shark following the bait so I

dropped it back and hooked into the mako. It made two jumps and then, on the third one, jumped onto the bow of the boat and got stuck in the side railing. The mate then ran up the other side of the boat to secure it with two tail ropes. After tail-roping it and decision making, we decided to release it. We undid one of the ropes and then cut the other one off. The fish slid down the side of the boat and into the water and swam away with a splash. The mako was estimated at about 190 lbs.

For some Prep students, summer means lacrosse. Harrison Hanley of prep 8 participated in tournaments in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Connecticut. The tournaments were mid-day, render-ing the days very hot. The last few weeks of August were filled with tryouts for travel teams. After working out with and trying out for three separate teams, Harrison elected to play the coming season for Team 91. He is looking forward to meeting his new teammates. (Recent OLH grad, Andrew McAdorey, now a freshman at St. Anthony’s plays for Team 91 2020 this fall. ) Go Warriors!

Prep 8 will have its very own “security” man in place as James Robert Fry shares his

experiences leading toward his graduation form the Suffolk Country

Police Department Young Explorers program. This is a five day inten-

sive program for disciplined young

adults considering a future career in law

enforcement.

James was admitted into the program

based his academic achievement, recom-

mendations and a private interview. His

routines included classes in law, self—defense, aviation SWAT and canine op-

erations.

The Shinnecock Nation Pow Wow and the Hampton Classic Horse Show highlight the end of the summer season and give students a last chance to enjoy the sunny days before school begins.

Second grader Olivia Robertson (left) had the honor of a Newsday featured photograph as she partici-pated in the Hampton Classic lead line.

Alejandra Morales (right), a fourth grader, mounted her pony at the Classic. Both girls recognized sever-

al other OLH stu-dents among the young riders at the Classic.

While many hold memories of exciting events and camps, others are recalling the opportunities they had in serving others.

Prep 8’s Marlena

Bellucci and Kyla Culver ‘17 were among a group of seven OLH students who staffed the vacation Bible School at the Basilica Par-ish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Many of the campers were younger students from OLH.

The tradition of school summer service by Prep students was continued as three groups of older stu-dents came to school during August to help in un-packing supplies, delivering books, helping with class-room setups.

This summer I fractured my arm falling off my pony during a horse show. Since I couldn’t go to pony camp, my family and I took a trip to Tennessee to see the eclipse. It was a long ride Niota, one of the sites designated for the best viewing. It was amazing. With our solar glasses on, we watched the sun get covered by the moon. The shadows on the grass looked just like what was happening in the sky. Tree frogs and cicadas started to sing and the street lamps went on right before totali-ty. The white ring around the sun was so bright, and the sky was very dim. After the eclipse, we went back to Chattanooga. We had lots of fun there as we visited the Tennessee Aquarium, the Hunter Museum, and even on a horse ride one night. It was a great trip. -Evelyn Hanley
