A Note from the Board On behalf of the Board of Directors, Musicians and Staff, I bring you the Tennessee Philharmonic Orchestra’s 38th Season! We are launching the 38th season by reclaiming our original name, the “Tennessee Philharmonic Orchestra.” This year’s theme “Timeless Treasures” focuses on this symphony remaining rooted in our history while branching into the future with new vision.  The decision to return to our original name expresses our desire to reach music lovers in the entire Middle Tennessee region and beyond. And given feedback we have received from cities surrounding Murfreesboro, without question, there is an audience for quality live orchestral music. The 2019-2020 season is robust, with five exciting Mainstage Concerts featuring familiar music you didn’t know you knew, a Veterans celebration of music through the generations, the Holidays marked with traditional favorites, Having the Time of Your Life Jazz and finally having fun with Showtime on Broadway. We will also celebrate with our two fundraisers, Swinging at the View with “Music City Swing Orchestra” and our Green Tie Affair and Casino Night.   But it gets even better and more exciting in this new season. With great delight and anticipation we also welcome our new conductor, Maestro Dan Allcott. For the past quarter century, Maestro Allcott has built a reputation for conducting daring collaborations and orchestrating outstanding symphonic concerts. He has worked with internationally known stars in many opera and ballet productions. He has expressed with great enthusiasm his desire to journey with us toward our new vision and to help us build on our longstanding legacy.  It has been our mission for the past 37 years to foster and encourage the appreciation of music through live performances and educational programs that are diverse, enriching and of the highest quality. However, reaching this goal would not be possible without the work of our Board and administrative colleagues, The Symphony Guild, our corporate sponsors, individual donors . . . and most importantly you, the patron. Your enthusiasm and generosity are the reasons we are able to continue our fine tradition of classical, pops and educational performances for present and future generations. So as we like to say, please sit back, relax and enjoy the season of wonderful music by your Tennessee Philharmonic Orchestra.

Jane E. McNulty, President, Board of Directors

The First LibrarianEllen Buckner is all about music, all the way. Her life has revolved around it since she was growing up in Atlantic, Iowa, a small town of around 7,000 people in be-tween Omaha and Des Moines. She came from a family that loved music. Her mom, a registered nurse, sang in high school operettas and her dad, a butcher, had a beautiful bass voice, but he couldn’t read music. Her younger brother played trumpet. And so began a musical journey that ended up in Murfreesboro, where she now lives, and where she, decades ago, helped start the orchestra Guild and became the orchestra librarian. “There was always music in our home,” she recalls. Nowadays she can always be found on one of the front rows when the Tennessee Philharmonic Orchestra per-forms, and she soaks it up with her fel-low concert goers and friends. Her journey out of Atlantic started with a voice scholarship to Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. There, a friend who got a music scholarship at Eastern New Mexico University was able to convince her professor to also give her friend – Ellen Buckner – a scholarship. She got one in French horn and voice, and soon her brother followed to the desert of New Mexico on his own trumpet schol-arship. The year was 1950. “I received a master’s degree in voice, the first one there apparently, so they had to figure out a curriculum for me. I had a semester each in viola, cello, obo, bassoon, percussion choral conducting, and band directing. By the time I was singing with symphonies and orchestras some years later, I was well acquainted with the instruments,” she says. Ellen Buckner is modest about her ac-complishments, and not sure she wants to be called “multi-talented,” but she once was proficient in all these instru-ments and sang opera in the US, Ger-many and England. She got married,

and along with her husband they taught school in Carlsbad, New Mexico. But not for long. Her husband went into the Army and they started travelling; Fort Benning, Fort Bragg and Germany. “I did a lot of singing in Germany, di-rected a choir and started a woman’s group to stay involved in music. I sang with Bad Tolz orchestra in Bavaria, and I ended up singing several places in Eng-land before we returned to the US. “While in Washington DC I took more voice lessons, this time from Todd Dun-can who was the first Porgy in Porgy and Bess. He was a wonderful teacher and man. And I started a group of singers, while there,” she recalls. “We went around to elementary schools and did opera excerpts for them, wear-ing costumes, and one of the most emo-tional experiences we had was when Martin Luther King Jr. was assassi-nated. That weekend was horrible in DC, fires were started downtown, and we were scheduled to visit an elemen-tary school in the area that was hardest hit by the unrest. “We called the principal to see if we per-haps shouldn’t come. But he said please come, “the children need something to di-vert their attention,” she recalls. It was a wonderful experience to see the children enjoy the visit during a very tense time. From there it was back to Germany, where her husband served in the Special Forces, and Buckner was under contract with the Heidelberg Opera. They later moved to West Berlin, where she per-formed three concerts in the West Berlin Philharmonic with the Hohenfelds Or-chestra, and an audience of 4,500. “I’d rather sing for 4,500 people than 12,” she says, recalling how she and her brother were “made” to sing at family events back in Iowa as kids.

When her husband retired, they moved stateside, ended up in Chattanooga in 1986, and she got involved in the Sym-phony Guild. A few years later, she moved to Murfreesboro, and immediately got involved with The Guild that she had helped start almost two decades earlier while teaching at MTSU. In Murfrees-boro they visited schools with packets of coloring books and cassettes to introduce the students to Peter and the Wolf that they later performed for the students. “It was highly successful, and we did this for years,” she recalls. In 2005 she became the first librarian for Murfreesboro Symphony Orchestra. “Back then all the music was in file draw-ers. We decided to computerize every-thing, and with some Guild members we put the music on computers. Later we had to scan the scores so we could email-parts to the musicians. At the time we didn’t have any money to mail the mate-rial out, so email was the only solution. “Most musicians were fine with the scores via email, but a few insisted on hardcopies,” she recalls. A few years later she retired from the ac-tive duties of the orchestra. But she never misses a concert and listens to music all the time. “Music is soothing. Right after 9-11, times were tense, just like when Martin Luther King was assassinated, and we were debating cancelling the upcoming concert. But the decision was made not to, and people truly needed and appreci-ated the concert to divert from the col-lapse of the Twin Towers and the horrible things that week. “We started with The Star-Spangled Banner, and the whistles and shouts USA, USA, almost tore the roof off Tucker Hall. That was a great and moving event,” she says.

The Guild

Behind every successful organization is a support group. The Tennessee Philharmonic Orchestra is no exception. Since the orchestra’s beginning 38 seasons ago a group of music lovers have provided much-needed support for the organization. The Murfreesboro Symphony Orchestra Guild (MSOG) works quietly and not so quietly behind the scene to ensure the or-chestra has the support it needs, while at the same time paving a path for young musicians who wants to develop their skills. “We are a group of volunteers dedicated to fine music in our area,” said Ruth Taylor, guild president, who has been in-

volved for many years. Every January they put on a jazz concert in Murfreesboro to raise funds for the work they do. This year’s “January Jazz” featured the Ethos Jazz Ensemble along with Stones River Jazz. Two hours of live music, with food and festivities, all in a very successful effort to raise money for their mission, drew over 90 patrons. On April 4th, the guild is having their annual “Music in the Morning” which is the largest public event, and it usually

draws over 100 patrons who come to hear professional music. These two events typify the not so quiet work they do. The guild has a “Stay at Home Tea” fundraiser later in the year, where they mail tea bags to hundreds of people, asking them to have a cup of tea at home, and send a donation to the guild. It’s an easy way to take part in a fundraiser without leaving the home. That’s the quieter part of their work. “This has become a great source for us, both in raising funds and creating awareness of our work,” Taylor said.

In the end, all this work help support the Tennessee Philhar-monic Orchestra along with the Ethos Youth Ensembles and individual students through educational scholarships, while also creating awareness about the music offerings in Middle Tennessee. “We welcome anybody who loves fine music to join us,” said Taylor. The MSOG meets quarterly. For more information they can be reached at [email protected]
