Like a broken record, perhaps one per-formed by the Drunken Sailors with gui-tars, I am obliged to re-iterate that the numbers: financials, membership, sail camp enrollment and related Junior pro-grams, progress on the construction of the new clubhouse, etc. etc. etc; are all pointing to a golden era on the horizon for the Pontchartrain Yacht Club.

At the last board meeting we had to con-sider 10 new applications! It seems that the increase in the initiation fee to $500 has not deterred new interest in membership and our new clubhouse isn't even up yet.

Some areas of concern need to be addressed how-ever. We need more volun-teer hours to make the club rise out of

Social I hope everyone is enjoying their summer so far. We are hoping to put on some events for you so we can all gather ‘round our double-wide!!

Our big event for June, back by popular demand (drum roll, please) will be our Lobster Boil, on Saturday June 24. Res-ervations for this event are a must. Stay tuned to your e-mail for updates. The price will be determined as the lobsters arrive, but I can tell you Dick Jones (our famed boiler) told me they’re not cheap this year – so start saving your pennies!

On Wednesday, June 7 and 21, we’ll have $1 nights and then on Friday, June 16 and 30, we’ll have Cheap Food Friday Night. As of right now, we have no concrete plan

    for

these so …. If you’d like to volunteer to cook or help with getting something ca-tered in, please let me know. We know that you awesome cooks are out there.

In July, we’d like to put on a Wine/Cheese tasting with the help of Paul, our bartender. Those plans, along with the traditional Caribe Party (which will be held in Au-gust), are in the works.

As always, our ears and minds are open to any new suggestions. And, as always, I’d like to thank those people on my committee, who help make all of our events successful!

    From the Vice-Commodore-

The Semi-Annual meeting was held on Sunday, May 21, at which time the members of the Nominating committee were elected. Serving this year will be Celeste Thorson, Tom Quin-lan, Terri Hamilton, and Phyllis Danielson (as alternate). Vaughan Sollberger and Orhan Ergun will round out the group as the two representatives from the board. The committee will be commissioned on or before June 21 (thirty days from the

semi-annual meeting) pending ac-ceptance by those elected, a chair being appointed, an orientation attended, and any other require-ments being met. After all of that, the Nominating Committee will be released into the general member-ship to search for candidates, so consider yourselves forewarned! If you have been a regular member in good standing for at least one year and would like to be consid-ered as a candidate for the board of directors, please contact a

member of the committee, or me.

GYA Commodore Janet Miller-Schmidt mentioned at the semi-annual meeting that the GYA Foundation is planning to dis-tribute funds to storm-ravaged clubs of at least $1,000 cash or equipment per club. Since PYC has been fortunate enough to have received a large infusion of cash from our member-ship, we chose equipment.

On Opening Day in May, we took deliv-ery of an Opti trailer that was donated by a club in Palm Beach, Florida. The GYA Founda-tion is still accepting cash contri-butions re-

lated to Katrina/Rita recovery efforts. If you would like to con-tribute, please call me for in-formation.

Finally, a huge thank you to eve-ryone who participated in putting on our joint GYA/PYC

Opening Day. A good time was had by all, according to reports from the GYA. It takes a tremendous amount of effort to put on such an event, and it couldn’t have been done with-out our dedicated members and staff.

  • We have experienced a small surge of applications for member-ship resulting in the 8 new mem-bers listed below and 7 more can-didates completing their proposals.

Brock Schmidt, now a resident in Georgia, has joined to sail for PYC in Capdeville Regattas.

Photographer “Radar” and Michelle Harcher, Kevin (9), Johnathan (10), and Andrea (6), all ready for sail camp.

Wildlife Biologist, Gregg Purdy, has joined to observe and partici-

pate in the PYC Zoo, along with his black lab Riley.

Michael and Peggy Brumfield, Joshua (20). Michael was one of our winners at the PYC Fishing Tournament last month.

We also welcome back members Bill Evans and Dee Stinson, owners of a 26’ Shamrock and a 24’ Stonehouse vessel.

Amidst the re-construction of his home, Myron Sheen has joined, and we look for-ward to having his son, Mason (12), at sail camp this summer. His home on Lakeshore Drive was re-corded as the home of the Pontchartrain Yacht Club in the

    early 1900’s.

We also welcome Patrick and Katherine Park from San Diego with Justin, Sean, Bryan, Heather and Holly. Patrick has shared some insightful ideas for nautical events from their experiences at the SDYC.

[email protected] - Suzana Williams I know that some of you have been frustrated by the lack of an active junior sailing program at PYC. We have a terrific Summer sailing camp, but it should not be considered a junior sailing program. A junior sail-ing program should be active year round and typically creates the at-mosphere that “feeds” an active adult sailing program. Both have been ab-sent for awhile. The current Board of Directors, along with other members, recognizes this situation and we are trying to make a change.

I know that some of you did not fully agree with the purchase of the new boats based upon what has hap-pened in the past but we have them and we need to make the best effort we can to get sailing back in place at PYC.

Bob Hodges held a meeting with in-terested juniors and adults who would like to start sailing and racing the 420’s. I think we had 6 adults and around 10 juniors. That’s encourag-ing. Bob is working hard to get all four boats on the water and make the best effort we can to start a club sailing program for both adults and juniors using these assets.

The club now also owns ten brand new Optimist dinghies and I hope we can find someone with the same mo-tivation as Bob to get our juniors in these boats every weekend.

I am happy that PYC has new boats and equipment. I just want to see it utilized as you and many others do. I hope that past lessons learned as to maintenance of these assets and motivation to use them for the benefit and success of the club is not short lived. The repairs Bob is doing now are primarily due to four years of abuse and neglect and we need to “change the culture” to prevent that from occurring again. As we all know, parent involvement in the program and with their children in the program is the best way to

make it fun and make it work. It is no different than the parents getting in-volved in the PTA at their kid's schools. The more parent involvement, the bet-ter the school and the quality of educa-tion for their children. And, it is a lot more fun to take your kids to a regatta than go to a PTA meeting!

We need members like Bob Hodges to help us. Some of our past and present juniors are in a position to help us coach newer sailors coming in to our club and I hope we can encourage them in that direction in their spare time. I hope to see all of you help us kick off the 420 program.

Let me know how YOU can help.

    Suzana Williams

Thanks to Bob Hodges & Shan Kirk for their input in this months Chart article.

Opti Kids - Update Congratulations Ross Kirk!!

Ross will be participating on the United States Optimist Dinghy Asso-ciation (USODA), U.S. National De-velopment Team (USNDT). This is a result of his placement at Opti Team Trials in Bellport Bay, NY, in early May.

“Tough and Fun - Double-handed boats like the Club 420 give youth sailors the chance to master valuable spinnaker, tra-peze and teamwork skills that simply can't be learned in sin-gle-handed boats. Progressive sailing associations are devel-oping team racing and fleet rac-ing events around their double-handed trainers. These new sail-ing challenges are keeping young sailors excited and build-ing participation in junior pro-grams. “ http://www.melges.com/club420.html

  • Hope everyone had fun at Opening Day- it was quite a party! The activity at the club will definitely be picking up now that is “officially” summer. Sail Camp is beginning as well as summer bar hours. I look forward to seeing more of everyone! Just a few house keeping items:

    1. If you have a child using the Junior’s room, please pick up after them at the end of the evening. At the very least please throw any food or drink away that wasn’t consumed.

    2. Please check the lost & found box under the “Boatique” if you are missing items. It is filling up!

    3. Reminder, the dues rate increase approved at the General Membership meeting in April will be reflected in the May statement being sent out with the chart. If you have any questions, please call me at the office.

Hope to see you around! Stacie

    THE CHART JUNE 2006

    Dear Friends,

For one design May started literally with a bang.

I am happy to report that during the races that followed the pomp and cir-cumstance of opening day, our Capde-vielle team came in close second fol-lowing a tie breaker for first place with Pass Christian.

I would like to take this opportunity to also congratulate our Master’s team, Tom Quinlan, Janet Miller-Schmitd and Gene Wanless coming in second and our very own Travis Tucker (Green

Fleet) for also coming in second overall, out of eight opti-mists.

Last but not least, David Bolyard Jr., Jeff Lind-heim, Susan Danielson, Brock Schmitd and Colin Ross who repre-sented our club at Buc-caneer Yacht Club’s Spring Regatta (May 20th &

    21st), for coming in third.

Next on our Capdevielle calendar (June 3rd & 4th) is Chandler, held at St. Andrew Bay Yacht Club in Panama City, Fl. Our club will be represented by team captain Billy Ross, Larry Ruthven, Brock Schmitd and Colin Ross. Please join me in wish-ing them success.

During the same week end (June 3rd and 4th) we will play host to our annual School’s out Regatta. I am sure you will be out there in force, whether competing or just having a good time.

During the SOR, I look forward to work-ing with many of you – once again, my heartfelt thanks to all our volunteers who make such events look and feel “easy”.

    With thanks,
