Phal. aphrodite subsp. formosana ‘A09001’ (4N)

(TETRAPLOID FORM of Species)

A dynamite sibbing of this favorite of all

Phal. species ! This population is a tetraploid form, producing more compact leaves and much larger beautifully round flowers with great substance, producing

a long-lasting display with a much smaller footprint than is typical for the species. Gracefully cascading spikes

make for a stunning display !

Note: We just won the IPA Best Phal in Show Trophy when we displayed this

plant with its long cascading & beautifully arranged inflorescence !

This particular clone is the result of select sibbings and selfings to achieve

fuller rounder waxy fragrant flowers carrying an intense flush/blush over all

its segments ! Although slower to reach flowering size than many other Phal.

species, it’s more than worth the wait for its fragrance alone in addition to giving us a beautiful presentation during the

hotter months of the year !

Phal. japonica

(Species - formerly known as Sedirea japonica)

A great and easy-growing miniature with delightfully fragrant long-lasting small waxy flowers ! These are fully mature plants that are ready to show off with

their cascading and wonderfully fragrant spikes, the flowers crisply marked with

rich rose-burgundy. From our first batch of this species we brought in a few years

ago, we discovered that after cutting back their spring flower spikes, almost

every plant was spiking again, so they’re capable of flowering more than once a year ! When fully mature, this species

can put on quite a fragrant show !

Phal. speciosa/tetraspis ‘MS#1’

(Red color form of Species)

The taxonomists still cannot necessarily agree on the differences between Phal.

speciosa & Phal. tetraspis so we’ve noted both for this particular clone ! Both this clone and that of fma. imperatrix ‘Red’

flower with solid red fragrant waxy flowers on gently arching to pendulous

inflorescences from spring to winter. Even when the initial flowers have faded,

the still green spike will continue to produce and add more buds while at the same time producing an additional spike or two. The red expressed in the flowers is light and temperature dependent with cooler brighter winter conditions giving the most vivid red color. This clone was

selected for its evenly balanced segments, making a perfect circle with all

its tips !

their red color, but that again can vary with the time of year at flowering. Makes

sense to simply have one of each !

MULTIFLORAL MINIATURES, COMPACT-GROWING BRIGHTLY COLORED NOVELTIES,

INTERGENERIC PHAL HYBRIDS & EVEN SOME LARGER-FLOWERING STUNNERS:

Again, most of these clones are the result of the excellent Taiwanese breeding programs.

Many of the plants were hand-picked from select nurseries over the last several years on our annual trips to Taiwan.

PLEASE NOTE: With many of the harlequins & the red or orange novelties, differences in light & temperature at various times

of the year will cause some variation to occur in the flower color and/or intensity of their markings. Under warmer temperatures & more shaded conditions in the summer, many red novelty-type hybrids with yellow or orange in their breeding background will flower showing more of those colors. Under cooler temperatures & brighter light in the fall to winter months,

the red pigment in the flowers is more strongly expressed resulting in solid to nearly solid red flowers. And those hybrids with a heavy harlequin influence will show their boldest and most vivid colors when bloomed under cooler temperatures &

brighter light during the fall & winter.

In addition, many of the Phal. bellina and/or violacea-influenced novelties improve in color intensity and size with fuller form on their 2

nd & 3

rd flowerings, as do the actual species parents.

Phal. Chia E Yenlin ’LHB08’

(Sogo Yenlin x Formosa Cranberry)

A stunning harlequin-influenced multi-floral miniature ! Its flowers are heavily suffused with harlequin spotting fusing to a dark rich burgundy (darker than our

photo shows) covering most of the flowers, leaving just a charming pink

picotee as a halo around its segments. This particular hybrid also has very attractive silvery-green foliage as

opposed to the traditional dark green leaves of many miniatures. And as first bloomers they’re already rewarding us

with 2-3 compact spikes, with those that were just cut back already spiking yet

again !

many, Phal. lobbii is one of the more difficult species to grow so we’re always

looking for primaries that produce flowers like the species but are much

Phal. Dragon Tree Eagle ’Red Apple’*

(Penang Girl x Black Eagle)

A sensational new color form of this very

famous hybrid ! Producing compact spikes of fragrant waxy flowers, we leave previously flowered spikes on the plant if they remain green since they’ll continue

to add buds in season in addition to producing a new spike or two. One of our friends in Taiwan stated that this clonal shift is actually from the clone

‘DT168’ of Phal. Dragon Tree Eagle. He commented that it might flower

differently depending on light and temperature, with less light and higher

temperatures producing flowers more red like the photo. He went on to explain that

lower temperatures and higher light in the cooler months would produce flowers more in keeping with the clone “DT168’. We have yet to flower them during both

seasons so we’re just sharing this information with everyone to explain

potential differences in its flowering from one time of year to another.

An adorable micro-miniature with a small leaf span & charming compact spikes of

small white flowers accented by an orange lobbii-influenced lip ! When Phal. Formosa Dream was originally registered, Phal. aphrodite and Phal. parishii had not been separately identified so this name

could have been registered by the hybridizer using amabilis or aphrodite, and lobbii or parishii. As a result, the

hybrid name applies to any combination of these parents. However, from the full flower form & the lip shape, we suspect the cross is actually Phal. aphrodite x

Phal. parishii. Whatever the parentage, it’s hybrid name remains the same. And it’s a great easy-to-grow micro-mini that

parishii (now Phal. hygrochila) with Sedirea japonica (now Phal. japonica). Reclassifications aside, these plants

produce beautifully spotted small waxy yellow flowers over very compact foliage.

As a hybrid population, there will be a slight variation from one plant to another

but all have flowered with the same wonderfully spotted flowers & lips.

FIRST BLOOM ONE-OF-A-KIND NOVELTY SEEDLINGS (new listing to come):

All of our novelty or select seedlings flowered for the first time for us this past summer ~ and with Phal. bellina in the background of many, as first bloomers they will initially produce only 1-3 flowers on their first spikes. This particular type of breeding is extremely slow to grow to flowering maturity, unlike many other Phalaenopsis, due to the heavy influence of waxy

Phal species in its background. For this line of breeding we leave any still-green spikes on the plants since they will most likely add more buds to these spikes in addition to producing new spikes at their next flowering. Some people choose to remove the initial spikes & give the energy back to the plant. However, we’ve never noticed (with this line of novelty-type

breeding) that it doesn’t make much, if any, difference in the overall vigor of the plant since their breeding background carries the tendency to retain older spikes. Also, with this kind of breeding, flower form, color and size improve enormously with

their 2nd

& 3rd

flowerings. But ~ the real bonus to owning a One-of-a-Kind plant is that you can give it your own clonal name !

As new seedlings flower up this spring & summer, we’ll post a photo of each with their prices.

conditions since they are miniature growing Chinese species, requiring much lower light, less space & will grow under warmer temperatures than their larger cousins ~ they also don’t require the extreme chill of standard Cymbidiums in order to make their flower spikes and all tend to flower more than once a year, having no definite flowering season. One of these clones is just 6” in height – perfect for windowsill & under-lights growing !

We are particularly fond of the green & yellow flowering varieties with either delightfully compact or elegantly tall flower spikes. We’ve found that the traditional pale pink-burgundy colored flowers are just too muddy to stand out and make a statement.

The clone ‘Tian Cao’ also has the added charm of VARIEGATED FOLIAGE, meaning it’s attractive, even when not in flower ! Variegated foliage comes at a higher price because it’s greatly prized in Japanese & Chinese cultures, meaning the stronger the variegation, the more expensive the clone.

Habenaria rhodocheila*

(Species)

We have been amazed at how easy to grow this Habenaria species has been ! Even

when not in flower, their foliage is beautifully marked. We’ve found that if we keep them just slightly moist with a light

spritzing, not wet, when they go deciduous, they produce their spring growths readily. Allowing them to dry

totally will most likely cause their loss over the winter – we know, we used to follow the

culture sheets & did just that – and they never came back ! We’ve also discovered that trying to grow them in a bark mix is

more than challenging, so we’ve switched to growing them in moss. This population

has been extremely vigorous & is well worth adding to every collection. Plus, despite our initial doubts, they LOVE

growing in the New Zealand moss ! We’ve been amazed at how really easy

Habenarias are to grow & flower – just don’t follow any of the culture sheets &

you’ll do great !

Being seedlings, not mericlones, there will be a very slight color variation from one

seedling to the next.

Habenaria xanthocheila*

(Species)

Another great Habenaria species bearing glowing bright yellow flowers ! These are small growing terrestrials with coral-like

roots. In Malaysia they are found growing exposed on granite boulders. Produces

beautiful erect inflorescences earlier than many other Habenaria species. Also, unlike other Habenarias, this species appears to have little serrations on its

flower segments which add to its charm.

Onc. (Gomesa) Moon Shadow

’Tiger Tail’ AM/AOS

(Cytocidium Hornet x Big Bee)

We’ve always loved the brilliant yellow flowers of Onc. (Gomesa) varicosa,

especially with its boldly contrasting deep chocolate petals ! However, under our

growing conditions that particular species never did well at all. This little hybrid has

lots of Onc. varicosa in its breeding background, yet it is so much easier to grow & flower under our Phalaenopsis

conditions. Vigorously branching spikes over miniature growths make this clone a

sure winner !

Our awarded plant ~ the flower is so glossy that the flash is reflecting back ! Sepals & petals have a green base but are so heavily

overlaid with dark burgundy that they appear solid in color.

Propetalum La Jolla Delight ‘Hilo Orchid Farm’ AM/AOS

(Promenaea stapelioides x Zygo. Kiwi Dusk)

JUST AWARDED !

We just had our plant of this clone

awarded an AM/AOS at the MontrealExpo Show this March ! An enormous

improvement over prior makes of this hybrid, due in large part to the dark &

heavily suffused clones of its parents. A wonderfully compact grower, unlike it’s

Zygo. pollen parent, these plants will grow happily under medium to bright light, right

next to Phalaenopsis, and their waxy flowers can last for weeks. If their light

green leaves start showing a bit of yellow, that’s an indication that they’re getting

their maximum sunlight. They will grow equally well under intermediate

temperatures although we grow them just a bit warmer with our Phalaenopsis. Keep

moist to help maintain their plump pseudobulbs but do not allow the medium

to become soggy.

Note: We’ve been amazed at how vigorously these plants are growing in

their 2” rose pots ~ and our awarded plant has now been in flower for 3 months !

Psychopsis Mendenhall ’Hildos’ FCC/AOS

(Butterfly x papilio)

Producing stately inflorescences of “butterfly-like” 5” flowers, this hybrid will

continue to add buds to each spike it creates, sometimes for as long as seven years ! A well-grown plant can produce

over 20 inflorescences & create a spectacular display. These plants will easily spike for the first time in just 3”

pots. They resent being repotted so we always just shift the entire root ball, bark included, to the next larger size & fill in

around the perimeter with fresh bark mix. They also don’t mind getting a little dry

between waterings. An easy, forgiving & showy grower & bloomer, even under lower light Phalaenopsis conditions.

Tsubotaara Melinda Marie ‘Blue Fairy’

(Pabanisia Eva’s Blue Amazon x Zygonisia Cynosure)

A 10” miniature member of the

Zygopetalum family, with icy-blue flares & an icy-blue lip, the back of the flowers

being a solid icy-blue ! These plants like to be kept evenly moist & as a result, seem to prefer being grown in New Zealand moss.

Long-lasting flowers & capable of flowering up to three times a year on a fully mature plant, these are amazingly easy to

grow & flower.
